I needed a way to protect my data from theft, fire, or hardware failure. In order to do that I worked with my brother David (The 8-Bit Guy), to place a replicated Synology at his house. This keeps a complete copy of all of my data at a remote location!

I needed a way to replicate my data offsite for backups. So my brother and I came up with a solution to replicate my Synology over our VPN. It works great!

I went a different route for my off-site personal storage... took a decommissioned Windows PC using the on-board raid to create 4TB of space. I used Filezilla server with FTP over TLS to get data to/from it... then I used SyncBack to do the heavy lifting of making sure my data is mirrored between the two sites. Crude? Maybe. Effective? Definitely... and cost me nothing but time.

Neat- looking forward to watching your other videos. But I wouldn’t have chosen RAID 5- with gigantic 14TB drives, in the event of a drive failure there will be very very long rebuild times and a non-trivial likelihood of unrecoverable read errors during that rebuild, which would toast your array. Better to use RAID 10 for your four drives. Yes you only get 50% usable capacity rather than 75%, but your data will be much safer, even considering you have a remote backup.

I don't think your reasoning about running at 3am for ransomware protection is accurate. The whole point of having snapshots (other than easy incremental backups) is retention of point-in-time versions of your files. If you get ransomware, it may backup all the encrypted files, but you still have your previous "7 daily, 2 weekly, 1 monthly, 1 yearly" backups to revert to.

That's sort of like asking "Should I use a blender or a food processor?" or "Should I use a pickup or box truck?" or "Should I use a riding mower or a push mower?" or "Should I used a jigsaw or a tablesaw?" Answer: Use the tool that best fits the job you are doing.

Near the end you talk about replicating corrupt or infected data. If you had chosen a ZFS based solution, this would never be an issue. You would send a snapshot, and those snapshots are immutable.

ZFS and snapshots are independent things. And I do actually send snapshots.

I have something similar on a couple of Synology but not using the replication.
Does the replication 100% mirror the source on the destination or does it keep a backup?
For example, if you delete a file and days later realise you don’t have it on the source Synology, would the destination still keep a copy of it?
Or if for some really unlikely reason a file became corrupt on the source and it replicated to the destination, would the destination still have a previous copy of it?
I am aware that the Synology has a feature to keep up to 30 (?) revisions of a file btw (wonder if it replicates that data too) :)

It's Snapshot replication. It stays 100% in sync, but retains previous snapshots. If you delete a file, it will be available on previous snapshot for whatever period of time (or number of snapshots) you define.

You could always say yes sure, then secretly swap them in the middle of the night. What bro I don't know what you're talking about I didn't do anything.

I just subscribed. Great video. I am trying to do the same thing. Did you have to port forward any ports or add specific firewall rules?

@thegeekpub Will the Synology device let you perform snapshots on the replicated copy (your brothers house)? This way I can perform Realtime replication with snapshots for corruption replication protection.

Yes. I am actually doing just that.

Did he limit the inbound network connection so it doesn't saturate his WAN?

No need to encrypt replication as you already have encryption in the vpn. Doble encrypted data can actually slow down transmission or make files bigger.
No need to fret ransomware. Simply need to configure the sync/replication to move the deleted files to a directory and then use a purging script to delete old files from there.
I also have a PC syncing several times a day with all deleted files getting moved to a date-time stamped folder on the local encrypted NTFS drives (have your data in more than one FS format!).

The VPN only encrypts over the WAN. It doesn't encrypt on the LAN.

I'm not sure I'm worried more about my data than I am about my house.
Second, a _good_ brother would spring for a second internet account to not only not bog down Netflix, but also allow link aggregation for more speed.

I never said I was worried more about my data than my house. But you should consider that as someone running a business that data is invaluable to me. It would take me close to a decade to re-create, if ever.
Second, a second internet connection would cost $1428 a year plus tax. All so I could use it 10-20 minutes a day in the middle of the night, when the other internet connection is idle and "free".
