Toward the end he talks about Radiolab, haha! The spaces, and sitting in those spaces, love that, but that's the part of the song my wife always skips.
They did an extensive "commentary" in the Vheissu booklet in 2005 and it was amazing. It was printed paper, you know, 1439 AD. Technology! **shakes fist at clouds**
I don't think it's that at all. They've never been very comfortable talking about their own music I've found. And what Alex said is true. No matter now much you loved the material when you first wrote it the recording process can be exhausting and quite honestly turn you off temporarily to it though I don't think that's the case with them at all. I spent 2 months tracking an album once and by the end I literally told people I hated it haha.
They are horrible interviewers lol! Everyone knows that from the years past. That's what makes them the best rockers out there. No drama or big headedness.
I expected more of a commentary on the lyrics than the songs alone... this was like 95% commenting on the song creation and ~5% lyric explanation. There are a lot of seemingly contradictory lyrics between songs on this album without explanation... and that doesn't even count bringing in the past albums' lyrics. Also, why are you yelling in the Branch in the River verses? I like the tempo change but it makes no sense to be yelling like that in that song.
The lyrics seem pretty well laid out in the album with no contradiction. Be the best human possible without degrading others for being human too. Racism, religion, political views all of it are seemiy black and white to peopel and should be seen from "the grey." Easy peasy dude, let's all be humans together and enjoy the pleasant company as it comes with all differences.
@@twally125 yeah but there's black and white promoted in Hold Up a light, Grey promoted in the Grey, and denial of black/white promoted in Beyond the Pines. Each in their context can make sense...together they are contradictory in message. More context is needed... The lyrics are vague. For example I found after talking with Dustin that The Grey is more directly about the Bible and homosexuality.
@@MejoraMx i dont know man. Before tbeitbn, he use to be passionate about his inspiration. It seems like this album is written just for the sake of coming out with a new album.
@@thebear9474 nah... based on their latest release... while it is listenable, it sounded flat in comparison to their previous releases... as if lack of inspiration... so watching this interview... it confirms my assumption. But hey man im not angry, just disapointed. Im still going to listen to their new album though.
Dustin and Teppei, I love you both. I love this whole video. BUT NEED MORE OF THE BRECKEN-BROS!
It would've been really cool if the background songs matched the ones they were talking about...
“Everybody huuuuuuurts” - My wife during Everything Belongs
😂😂😂
Is the floor lava?
This is like the lazy-dad version of the Vheissu booklet.
Very much appreciated.
Cheers.
Thank you for this!
I love the National shirt. One of my favorite bands
Thanks for making this video. I love hearing more about the writing process for them! :)
1:47 beautiful words ❤
View #5? Myself 4 others Dustin & Teppei? Sharing thrice knowledge with a few others and thrice. Just found the second meaning of "only us"
They don't even really know where it came from! 😂 its divinely inspired.
Bob Dylan would often do the same thing. I remember a 60 Minutes episode where he’s admitting he doesn’t know where his lyrics come from
Wasn’t that the interview where he basically says he sold his soul to the devil?
I love that Dustin loves the National
Lol Teppei doesn't sound thrilled with Hold Up a Light
Who would blame him?
Thanks
man these guys need to chill out.
Toward the end he talks about Radiolab, haha! The spaces, and sitting in those spaces, love that, but that's the part of the song my wife always skips.
The dark is the best song imo.
Dustin kinda looks like bradley cooper lol
Dustin also has another lookalike in hollywood, i just cant remember who..
anyone?
Alex i always thought he looked like hopper from strangers things
How is the band that Dustin says @7:07 written? Now I'm curious.
same here
I think the band is No Knife, not 100% sure but they do not sound bad at all: ruclips.net/video/GZ1OdzQLSvY/видео.html
Man I wish they had explained what each song was about lyrically. They skipped a couple of tunes in regard to the lyrics
Name of intro song? 0:10? Thanxs
What's the song in the intro and outro?
That would be "Elusive Reasons" by Time, The Valuator :)
I want to marry Teppei! 😍😂
Wait, what the hell is going on??? Theres commentary on an album? Goddamnit. I hate technology.

Technology! **shakes fist at clouds**
Why is that a bad thing?
Thrice is my all time favorite band but this interview turned me off to the album. They seemed bored with their own music.
I think it's more that they are a little awkward with interviews. I don't think they're bored with it!
Spend months making something, go on tour, get dead tired then get asked to talk about your own work in the morning.
youll see ahah

What is wrong with teppei? He cant even explain his inspiration for the song... so dissapointing...
I believe that the problem is that they don't include Ed and Ry on the intervew.

They both look like tired-dads-on-tour to me.
Dont mistake their inability to talk about new music for their ability to make good new music.
So are you basing your opinion on their music based on how much you enjoy their interview or how well they explain things for you?

"We gave up trying and sold out shamelessly"
Shut the fuck up
You couldn't use an even more unoriginal and outdated argument if you tried. It's 2018 my dude.
Here's how I read that:
*swoops hair*
You: "They're first album was better, all their later stuff sucks."
Ya tool.
I'm already throwing money at them. Well deserved.
