I agree. I've been listening to them since identity crisis, and while it took some time to get used to, they are fantastic and an inspiration to so many bands and genres. Dustin Kensrue is also one of the best lyricists of the last 25 years, at least.
Their newest stuff is the bestest too. Beyond the Pines might be the best thing they've ever wrote and it is so simple. The best songwriters of our time for sure.
I HATE how much more recognition you guys deserve outside of this song. You guys legitimately changed my life. I'm a two tour veteran. One Iraq and one Afghanistan and I cant possibly express the effect you've had on me in my life. You're older albums. all of it. I'm 33. I was back there with you guys, I've seen you through your shit, seen and traveled to see you live 8 times in my life. You're my favorite band in existence.I hope you fall back into your fans that truly love you.

Going on 15 years..I can't stop. Nobody and I mean NOBODY understands. I can't play Thrice for anyone without being told to move on. That man, his band, by far the best thing that's ever happened to me

Beyond the Pines is my favorite. it is incredibly deep and powerful. Reminding us we're all connected and to see past the illusion of separation, hate and greed. It's beautiful.
Standing knee deep in cold water, swiftly moving, somehow I knew I'd lost something Wading waist deep I saw a book there in the river, waiting for me to find it there I tried to read it, neck deep, treading water, but the tide, it pulled me out to sea Then, with water in my eyes, the words began to rise from their place They were beautiful and dread; I reached for them and fed on each phrase They were honey on my lips, but then a bitter twist in my side I knew they'd lay me in my grave; "Is there no one who can save me?" I cried Sinking, down deep through cold water and heavy silence, shadows stirring in the gloom What things lay sleeping down deep in the darkness woke then, to find me in that tomb? Then, with water in my eyes, the words began to rise from their place They were beautiful and dread; I reached for them and fed on each phrase They were honey on my lips, but then a bitter twist in my side I knew they'd lay me in my grave; "Is there no one who can save me?" I cried And when I lost all hope to look, someone took that heavy book from my hands All its weight they set aside, after they had satisfied its demands I felt white and black reverse, and the lifting a curse from my heart Then like one receiving sight, I beheld a brilliant light in the dark Beautiful. Just beautiful.
The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in-a river that no one could cross. He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?” Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. yeah- Thrice hasn't come within a thousand miles of selling out. I talked to Dustin after their show in Charlotte a few weeks ago and he couldn't have been a nicer and more down to earth guy. They put on a ridiculous show, he walks offstage, grabs his acoustic, walks across the street, plays 30 minutes for a couple hundred drunk people and sticks around to shoot it with a bunch of complete strangers. No matter what type of mood I'm in, listening to the words of Dustin and the music of Thrice always put me in a state of mind that makes me feel like I can do anything.
Thrice sold out? No, they did what THEY wanted to do, not what the masses wanted them to do and that's the reason they aren't as popular as they can be. They went to a smaller record company because they would rather make less money and spend time with people they like than make more money and be apart of the system making them less happy. That's quite the opposite of selling out. Thrice worked just as hard with their records as U2, and Dustin has one of the best voices in the business.
I am 30 years old, I've heard in my opinion the best genre of all music, 70's, 80's,90's rap, soul, county, rock what have you and this is the best song ive ever heard in my life! God bless Thrice!
Hey y'all. Been seeing a lot of comment referred to the religious lyrics. Take a second...and read my take. Thrice is fantastic and their primary focus is to be as authentic and real as possible. Although, there lyrics could be religious, it shouldn't matter or sway you from trying to listen to the ACTUAL message there trying to tell. There music is an interpretation of their life journey. We are all on our own paths, and it may be foolish to be prideful to figure it out on our own/shut something down quickly...they probably have gone through some serious life challenges...and their music shares lessons from that. You might think they are trying to preach to you...but if you look the other way...they might be able to share with you some of the deepest emotions that we all do look for - without direct religious intentions. We all got our freedom to choose what to believe, but remember...that our life experiences were meant to be relatetable and shareable so we can be truly understand ourselves better. To be stronger together. To feel loved rather than be lonely . Please, greetings and love from Toronto, Canada.
I think that's the beauty of Thrice, while Dustin clearly uses Christian symbols in his songs, they leave it completely open to interpretation. If you are religious, you can take it that way. But it doesn't make the metaphor any less applicable to non believers. I'm somewhere between an Atheist and Agnostic, but I find Thrice's songs elegant and beautiful.
Exactly. What was a book to him, could be a person, or experience, etc. to someone who sees it with an open perspective. To bounce off the empowerment of Dustin's lyrics, from my perspective and personal interpretation: He makes reference to being "underwater" or, bogged down and held back by something. "Down" there he finds a book. This book brings light to him in a dark place, (honey on his lips) but also makes him see the unavoidable existential flaws in himself (they were beautiful in dread)/ (then a bitter twist in my side). He is influenced by the book to find something that will pull him out. (Is there no one who can save me, I cried). At the end, after giving up, someone takes the burden of the book out of his hands which allows him to revel in the beauty and light of his own unique individualism. The lyrics are completely objective to the listener, and written to be interpreted by the individual listener's experiences. SUCH AN AMAZING SONGWRITER.
They really took it up a notch with this record. Though I know there was more they could have given, they left in a beautiful way, adored by their fans and leaving a truly great collection of songs in their wake.
I saw them at the house of blues Dallas right before covid lockdown. They wrapped up the show with this song and im absolutely 1000% glad i went. I hadn't ever heard this song and put out the APB on twitter to see what it was called. Dustin Kensrue, the national treasure himself responded on twitter to let me know the title despite the fact that his macbook was trashed days before. I can't wait till this covid bullshit is over. The first thing I want to plan event wise is to see this band again live.
If it weren't for Beltsville Crucible and So Strange I Remember You, I'd still be listening to Hip Hop music exclusively. Thrice turned me on to Rock music and I think Dustin has one of the best voices in this genre of music. This song is a great for retrospecting back on all the great songs this great band has given us. :)
This song was the soundtrack to my first year going back to college to finally finish after a long layoff. I listened to it almost every day for 3 years straight. I don't know how, but it helped me get through all the doubts I had about myself and my abilities. For that, I'll be eternally grateful. One of my all-time favorites.
Idk if you’ll see this response since it’s been 5 years when you commented but literally same. I’ve been listening to this song everyday and I’m a student pilot. I have my doubts every now and then about flying but for some reason, this song keeps me going and soon enough, I’ll be living the dream I’ve always wanted.
I'm an atheist, but I think it's hard to deny that this is a song about finding Christ--discovering 'the Truth', repentance, and rebirth (hence the extended metaphor for baptism). Reading the words/learning about Christianity was a turning point ("they were honey on my lips"), but because he has lived in sin for so long, he realizes that they condemn him ("I knew they'd lay me in my grave"), but then "someone took that heavy book from my hands"--and showed him how to live according to the Bible.
Psalm 119:103 How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 1 peter 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 1 corinthians 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food 😭 This is beautiful.
And the song... the song is my favorite song of the year. They killed it with this album. Best album of the last 5 years. Thrice and Mastodon are the bands of the decade. Huge bands, huge albums. They get better with age.
god DAMN I love this song... only mad that it took me sooo long to find it after being stuck on Black Honey... when it's only two songs away from that on the album
There was a sound out of c n c drum kits at this era and maybe a bit before that just made it a thing. Coheed and thrice and some others. Just great sounding kits.
This song is a moment in history. God laid his grace to us mere mortals. I know there are other atheists feeling what I feel here. Thank you for awaking my soul.
I'm an atheist, but I'll listen to every album by Dustin from beginning to end. You don't need to believe in God to understand and appreciate the message from his music.
This was my reply to another comment in this thread about what may have influenced his lyrics. I think it deserves it's own post: What was a book to him, could be a person, or experience, etc. to someone who sees it with an open perspective. Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.

this chorus hits me like a tonne of bricks every time. absolutely sublime

3.10.2020 and still !!!
March 3, 2021 .. This song is needed now more than ever.
This is so fucking spot on. Jesus christ these guys are good.
Hell yes
Beautiful song.
Thrice continues to get better. This song is timeless.
No matter what type of mood I'm in, listening to the words of Dustin and the music of Thrice always put me in a state of mind that makes me feel like I can do anything.
5/8 😮
The quality is amazing, way better than the other tube videos.
Is such a shame this band is so underrated, probably they are among the best musicians of the last decade...really really sad
the band that only the ones who knew and still are sure these 4 men are legends
damn Riley, leave some talent for the rest of us.
What a song!!!
its amazing how this sounds exactly like the cd recording
The Best part is the song will live on forever
Dustin hitting the note on "dark" at the end...chills, man.
Tears... Man. Dustin Kensrue is such a writer, both lyrically and melodically.
Watching this years later and all I can say is.... Thank you for coming back... I missed you Thrice, I've really needed you. 💗
We all have a path to explore.
Hopefully we can be as honest as this band is to our end days.
The songs all have a true end.
I still get chills every time I hear this song.
^This
Perfect Brian, I couldn't have said it better myself
Exactly. What was a book to him, could be a person, or experience, etc. to someone who sees it with an open perspective.
To bounce off the empowerment of Dustin's lyrics, from my perspective and personal interpretation:
He makes reference to being "underwater" or, bogged down and held back by something.
I like devil's cake and angel food....🤷🏻♂️🤯
They really took it up a notch with this record. Though I know there was more they could have given, they left in a beautiful way, adored by their fans and leaving a truly great collection of songs in their wake.
This is one of the most poetic songs I've ever heard. Stop bickering about who is selling out and enjoy it.
watching Thrice live is life changing. I saw them on their farewell tour and it was hands down the best concert i've ever been to.
I'm actually glad to listen to their songs and to know that not every kid who doesn't really understand their energy, their passion hypes Thrice!
I love this band!
Always gets me right in the feels!
These guys are absolutely incredible live. I've checked out quite a bit of their live stuff and am continuously blown away
They're amazing
What an underrated band. This song is brilliant and beautiful.
Thrice is my favorite band and this is my favorite song. Love you guys so much❤
Absolute perfection...I tear up every time
Good. Beautiful. True.
11 years ago you sounded less like an Atheist and more like an Agnostic. How's that journey going for you now, friend?
this band..... no words... fav song by them
so glad Thrice has kept its original crew. forever Thrice!
The most underrated rock band ever!
Masterpiece of a song.
Could watch these vids all day...
Psalm 119:103
How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
1 peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
1 corinthians 10:3
and all ate the same spiritual food
😭
This is beautiful.
I'm addicted to this song. Can't stop listening...
I totally agree. What makes this incredible is that there were no effects used. Production to me appears just plainly acoustic. So raw and so awesome.
And the song... the song is my favorite song of the year. They killed it with this album. Best album of the last 5 years. Thrice and Mastodon are the bands of the decade. Huge bands, huge albums. They get better with age.
Gives you some hope in mankind.
Well yea these are great lyrics regardless of what you believe in. The imagery is so powerful and the really suits the lyrics.
I'm 90% positive that half of these views are from me alone. What a spectacular performance!!
Musical Perfection.
This video is what made me buy the POD HD500x back in the day after hearing what Dustin squeezed out of it. Riley's drumming is flawless.
god DAMN I love this song... only mad that it took me sooo long to find it after being stuck on Black Honey... when it's only two songs away from that on the album
different albums fam
Can't wait till June.
There was a sound out of c n c drum kits at this era and maybe a bit before that just made it a thing. Coheed and thrice and some others. Just great sounding kits.
Goose bumps evertime, so good!
i hope this explodes soon, hearing this at release , and coming back to it now, WOW, these guys are unreal
This band is 4 guys shredding the WHOLE time
those drums sound amazing!
I'd watch the sun with this playing in the background.
Man these guys are so fucking good these days. God dam.
I am not a religious person, but I respect the fact that Dustin is
I am going to miss this band so much.
Such a great performance love this band!
Vem pro Brasiil!
As always, they sound freaking amazing. Love this band so much!
The greatest band!!!!!
Seeing Thrice in live sessions always make me cry the hell out. Thank you.
This was my reply to another comment in this thread about what may have influenced his lyrics. I think it deserves it's own post:

I saw them many years ago with Norma Jean. By far the most solid and epic show i have ever seen; from transitions to effects it was just all around amazing.
Studio sessions like this are generally mastered, that's why ; ) . Still Thrice is filled with amazing talent.
I only saw Thrice live one time, over 16 years ago. They were awesome!
Got goosebumps listening to this again.
It's just perfect!
These guys definitely don't get enough respect!!!!
