Kudan, If you love souls games, high difficulty, good stories, and feeling that sense of achievement when you finally defeat a difficult enemy, look elsewhere. I am far from a good gamer when it comes to difficult games and even I thought the bosses were really easy. The game has cool builds and music, but that is pretty much it. Character creation is overrated, the characters themselves, the stories, the bosses, the main plot and the maps are all bland. The graphics are bad, the A.I is stupid, the frame drops are horrible. Enemies literally look like they are part of a claymation video from a certain distance. If you love anime then go ahead and get it, but if you prefer a good game with great content save your money and wait for a better souls like game. I finished the game already and even though it's not so bad of a game, I don't feel like this game is worth anything over 15 dollars.

Those are my tastes tho. Bosses we're very impressive to me too. Try solo or solo ng+ and it's a noticeable difference. The best boss battles I've ever had were in Shadow of the Colossus and maybe God of War. Because of all the full interaction and epicness. And it is a apocalyptic game so I'd expected alot of ruins. as far as 7's go, i think just because of the type of game this is, it sits pretty high up in the stack of 7's, i mean the dark souls formula is great. and altho there are a few more dark souls clones as of late, it's still not an overly populated genre, and it's still better than most other generic anime action rpgs.
That's about what I would have given it as well, maybe up to an 8.0. Brad is totally right that it starts off quite slow and the environments are boring, but it really picks up and the classes and endgame are really fun.
This game has been way more impressive than expected. Not perfect but character creation, build diversity, story and setting are all excellent. Unfortunately i'm addicted to shadowkeep now but i'll get back to it :).

The "Souls" genre is becoming the next Battle Royale genre...except for melee combat instead of shooters. It's going to be overdone. Right now it's still early enough for it to be respectable, but I'm hearing "Souls-like" for so many damn games that are coming out now it's going to get old real soon. And soon people will be criticizing Souls-like genres just like they do with Battle Royales.
@@-Stinky_Pinky this is true i feel this way to. Hoping elden ring brings new stuff to differentiate it. Sekiro thankfully didnt deep dive into souls territory too much but it still had those moments. Also can they stop making teleporting a feature. Why put that in a game where you created worlds and level to explore?
@@-Stinky_Pinky I don't know. Platformers didn't become battle royales, FPSs didn't either, nor RPGs or JRPGs or CRPGs or Tactical RPGs. Soccer games didn't, either. Nor racing games. Nor battle racing games. Nor fighting games. They simply become genres, and many, many games, many different games, have appeared, but it takes years. The first fighting games after Street Fighter, were much like Street Fighter, then minor additions, like two planes in Fatal Fury or zoom in/out camera on Art of Fighting or Teams in King of Fighters or 3D tactics in Tekken or 3D action in Toh Shin Den or whatever you would call the digitalized graphics, simple set of moves and ultra violence of Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. The first FPSs were all Doom-like and then Quake-like, but the new Dooms and many of the FPSs from the last 15 years, are nothing like Doom or Quake! Platformers, the same: Super Mario 2, Donkey Kong Country and Hollow Knight are entirely different games, but all are platformers born from the original Mario Bros and the original Donkey Kong. I'm sure the 3D action games inspired by Dark Souls will also offer, someday, in a few years, enough innovations to be deserving of their own genre, but for the moment, they are 3D action games, and 3D action games come in a wide variety that don't follow the same pattern.
7.5 - 8.0 is what I would give it. Love the game, but I can see where they could improve. I am addicted though. In my top 5 games this year, and my favorite souls like game that's not from Fromsoftware.
Alexander 7s and 8s which is kind of what I expected anyways. Hopefully, this will be help remove the stigma that anime-style games have gotten, and we can see some more of this kind of aesthetic.
@jonny s I know. I have no problem with that, only with reviewers who think anime boobs are a disadvantage. I'm not thirsty enough to purchase games just based on its fanservice, but I don't think fanservice is bad either. It's just aesthetics, and the gameplay is still fun.
I mean, people put too much weight on the number itself and 7 isn't a bad score. From what I've played, it seems like a swimming in 7's kind of game. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it or that some aspects aren't great compared to the lesser ones.
Way late I know but. 7 is good for this game. I'd bump it up to 8 personally but 7 makes sense. A lot of the areas are just corridors that look slightly different, and the enemies never made me go 'wow'. Except for like, the virgin born. I personally say 7.5-8/10. It's a good game. It's not AMAZING but I enjoyed it enough to buy a sequel, I'd say.
I didnt want to get this game because the metacritic score was a 7 but I did anyways and wow I'm glad I did! This is actually one of my favorite games of the year and I dont understand why it's getting low reviews. I see the criticisms it gets but its about gameplay and to me it's one of the best.
As usual, I agree with Brad. I would've mentioned that they copy pasted more than the formula from Souls. There is The poison depth from 3, Anor Londo from 1, The pit you have to drop into from 2. And I don't mean inspired by, they are plagiarized.
What's messed up is those are the worst maps in the game. They did better on their own ideas...though not much better. Im hoping they have a much better lead in map design if there's a sequel. The game could have been a 9 if the maps weren't terrible.
Sucks to see plagiarism in games like this. I feel like this game is cool because of the things that it's doing on it's own. Just take the souls combat and give me whatever new stuff you want to make. I love the anime/tokyo ghoul aspects of this combined with Dark Souls combat. But I def don't want a bunch of things all copied from dark souls.
Haha, yes, I was also going to say this. It's ridiculous. The game seems cool, but I cant take seriously shit like this. Seeing a girl in a party dress with huge tits in a situation like this is just too much for me

I have to say, Jones did a bad job editing this at 4:53 . When Brad wrote "The environments and enemy designs leave much to be desired", Jones decided to display a kickass seraphim on a gorgeous webbed stage.
Great Review! very honest and not biast of or against anime. I would personally give the game a 8, since while not perfect, its a blast to play and has alot of replayablity with New game plus and the multible endings.
@@S.A.O.D.A probably a anti-IGN conspiracy theory. Although IGN is not the best, it is hilarious how they get shit for saying literally the exact same thing as other sites that people agree with.
@@scorpiusjones5436 Eh, yes and no. Tbh, there aren't a lot of review sites that people universally agree with. The mainstream "gaming press" fuck up a lot, as does everyone, but when they do, it's really really public and sticks in people's minds. And honestly, I can believe it in this case. They've done worse, many times.
@@scorpiusjones5436 They actually claimed the game had "no online matchmaking or the ability to sync-up with friends", which happened with the first version of the demo. The updated version of the demo had online and a new (and harder) depth map to play. That was a blatant lie. As we all know that, in the full game, you can request help from other players and and help them too (you can bring only one human guest with you at any time). Also you can put a password to connect with your friends, of course. Check the IGN video review, it's only 4 minutes long. Obviously, people realized they basically used the demo (or the section of the game that appeared in it) to do a review of the full game. It goes without saying, but players got angry because of that poor excuse of a review. And I don't know what they played, but the AI partner is a great asset and can save your life and help you a lot in a boss fight as they move really well in combat (not as good as the human players, but they are able to fight very, very well. And the same happened in the demo). The AI can be disabled and you can play solo if you want, and you'll see a big difficulty increase. Also you can play with a human guest and no AI, if you want. They didn't explain that is way more important to buy and mastering skills than leveling up, and how leveling up works. When explaining the system, what they say is pretty generic, like if they didn't check everything you can do and cannot do with it. Things like the focus bar, the different drain attacks based on armor types, and other interesting things added to the Soulsborne-like combat formula are completely ignored, not mentioned at all. Didn't talk either about the story (except of what you can actually see in the demo). They even said: "the story feels very separate from what you actually do". That's not true. You might like or dislike the story, that's fine. I think it is a pretty generic action anime story. (I didn't expect something better, and like it enough, so I'm happy enough with what I've got.) But it's the story that drives your character from place to place. You cannot visit areas blocked by the story progression. IGN's reviewer didn't talk about character creation, music, sound efects, voice acting quality in English and Japanese, nor talked about the different environments, enemies, bosses or level designs either. And probably also ignored other important points. There is no footage of anything outside the demo except for just a little bit of the next area, the area of the second boss. When they uploaded the video, some RUclipsrs already had access to the full game for almost a week, and they where only allowed to show videos up to that second boss. But IGN are reviewers, they should had been allowed to show other places, enemies, scenes, and bosses from the full game. And more importantly, they should be able to tell you what the game has to offer. They did not deliver.
It's still pretty limited, but they give you the excellent Soul Calibur style of creation where you can put items almost anywhere, any size, any position. It's anime style though so there's NO BEARDS WTF
Honestly I'm tempted to buy. But I hate when games reuse the same setting pieces over and over again. So far every review has mentioned. I'll just wait untill it goes on a deal.
🗣Any1 grading this game low cause they claim its easy, need to drop your partner and play how souls games is suppost 2 b played, solo, shit will drive u insane😤😤😤
I'm much more interested by the psychology behind the development team; the only female character in the review had boobs bigger than her head (with boob window for good measure), and all the male heroes are running around with swords bigger than they are.
Great review as always, but I do find it kind of strange that there was no mention of the outlandish sexualisation of everything female in the game, especially as you were describing 'surprisingly fleshed-out characters' while a girl in nothing more but a torn white shirt was shown. Seems very unnecessary to me.
It seems to me that the whole focus was on the character creator than the game itself, why cant they put some realistic movement to the characters, that one of the things makes dark souls/bloodborne interesting, the same kind of mistake with one piece world seeker.
@@wallacesousuke1433 yes i did, unlike this anime game that doesn't have any weight in the character movement, dark souls does use "realistic movement" like the way the character run or even dodge role, hell even the way you use the weapons like a giant sword/axe is more realistic than this anime game where you swing a giant sword like its nothing xD
@@hassanghanim3966 well, now it makes sense! Yes, compared to Code Vein Souls games do have a more weighted feeling to their animations, despite not being 100% realistic themselves. Thats one of the gripes I have with Code Vein, roll and attack animations indeed feel weightless and way faster than they should be :( they need more windup and recovery frames to give that noice Souls feeling
TLDR this game has the best combatsystem of soulslike games. The characters are all likeable. Soundtrack is good. Leveldesign is the weakest of all soulslike games. And graphically is more like an early ps4 late ps3 game. So 7,5 sounds about right depending on how you weigh these factors.
@@christianeddins I feel its average fights are better, but the bosses are not at all memorable. Sekiro pissed me off a lot but some of the bosses were sooooo intense. The "bad" ending ones especially.
@@christianeddins Yes I do. The good thing about Code Vein is that you can mix and match your skills from different classes. So you can play a 2 handed swordsmann who can also use offensive magic. Also the magic system with icor is way better than what any souls game presented.
You are a little too forgiving with this one. It should not have the same score as The Surge 2. They are the same genre and i have to say Code Vein is trash compared to The Surge 2. 8.5 to 7.0 for me. Love you guys and your work either way 😘
What I've gathered from various reviews of the two games is that Surge 2 is the "better" game, but Code Vein is more fun. That's more or less what Brad recently shared on Frame Trap.
@@stevelafser9619 This seems to have been his take and it puzzles me a little bit. I do think The Surge 2 is an honest effort improving their pretty unique take on the Souls formula. While Code Vein is a very generic, uninspired remodeling of the hunting game formula in the mere image of the Soulslike genre.

Anime Dark Souls? Hell yeah, I'll get this one!
Whoa.😮
This looks interesting.🤔
The narrator sounds like the guy from the old Game Trailers reviews narrator
That's us. We started Easy Allies shortly after GT was shut down. Welcome back! -Bloodworth
Doesn't look like it's worth anywhere near it's full price, maybe half, guess I'll see how good this game is in like 6 months
Good review Brandon

@@Caidezes It's Brad's review, Brandon just does all of the narration.

It's a meme, don'tcha know
Supposedly has one of the best character creators
It has, i spent a good hour on it and it has a ton of freedom.
Normally I spend a hour on character creation in games. This took me nearly two.
Great review very fair. Jeez i wish you guys get all of igns subs. There review was horrible almost like all of there crap.
Better than the new Ghost Recon
🗣Any1 grading this game low cause they claim its easy, need to drop your partner and play how souls games is suppost 2 b played, solo, shit will drive u insane😤😤😤
Swimming in Sevens!
Brandon jones is the goat
I'm much more interested by the psychology behind the development team; the only female character in the review had boobs bigger than her head (with boob window for good measure), and all the male heroes are running around with swords bigger than they are.
I need this Game
The environmental art direction and level design looks horrid. Only thing holding me back from purchasing it. Probably wait for a deep, deep sale.
fuck reviewers, game is a solid 8-8.5....play it and see for yourself....story is fucking great, some teary eyed moments in there too.
Why not score it with 7.3 or 7.49 just like IGN!?😂
Good review tho!👍
we are the champions
"Gamepass game" just about sums up Code Vein. It's leaving GP on Feb 15 and I'm just trying it out until it's gone from the service.
Was hoping this would be like Nier: Automata. Idk how I feel about this game. I think I’ll just stick with the copy of Astral Chain I just ordered
I played both and enjoyed them but if you like Nier you made the right choice
I wished Astral Chain was like NieR: Automata.
At least it has actual characters and a story to keep you interested, unlike the dark souls games.
Yeah. I don't wanna buy a game and then watch hours of lore vids to understand it :p
Seems kinda neat, but also pretty darn standard.
But does it make you FEEL like anime dark souls?
the anime dark souls were the friends we made along the way
Best anime game of 2019. A treasured game out of a huge pile of trash anime games.
2 trophies away from the platinum, i enjoy it but is not soulsbornekiro or nioh or even surge.
Great review as always, but I do find it kind of strange that there was no mention of the outlandish sexualisation of everything female in the game, especially as you were describing 'surprisingly fleshed-out characters' while a girl in nothing more but a torn white shirt was shown. Seems very unnecessary to me.
thats animu for ya
Its pure fan service they know their target audience. They never marketed it towards the average player.
Swimmin in sevens
Edgy anime souls
Nothing edgy about it
breaking bad reaction
Looks more like a 6 to me after playing the demo
Its on game pass now
Kinda disappointing. Thought it'd be like anime souls, but most of the level designs seem to be straight hallways.
I was worried about level design at the beginning, but there's lots of experimentation the further you go
Wait till you get to see the Cathedral of The Sacred Blood
You're wrong.
@@ohamatchhams Yeah, beautiful area. Although due to the intricate maze design, it's going to be hit or miss depending on who you are.
Really? You must not play enough
This looks super edgy. I know for a fact the character designer saw Tokyo Ghoul.
code OPPAI
Ha, Jones mispronounced icore
First Video to not call this a soul's like game gets subcribed!!!
i like it
It seems to me that the whole focus was on the character creator than the game itself, why cant they put some realistic movement to the characters, that one of the things makes dark souls/bloodborne interesting, the same kind of mistake with one piece world seeker.
Did you just say characters in Froms games move realistically? 😂😂
So 7,5 sounds about right depending on how you weigh these factors.
el alcazar do you count Sekiro as a soulslike?
I haven’t played Code Vein so I could certainly be wrong but it’s hard for me to imagine it having more satisfying combat than Sekiro
@@christianeddins Sekiro is far from satisfying though
Thanks for not mentioning any relation to the souls games. Oops.
All the faces in the character creator look the same..
Welcome to anime.

I think the anime-artstyle is holding this game back..
You are a little too forgiving with this one. It should not have the same score as The Surge 2. They are the same genre and i have to say Code Vein is trash compared to The Surge 2. 8.5 to 7.0 for me. Love you guys and your work either way 😘
Helena Tang weren’t they reviewed by two different people?
@@TheTrailerCREAT0R No.
What I've gathered from various reviews of the two games is that Surge 2 is the "better" game, but Code Vein is more fun. That's more or less what Brad recently shared on Frame Trap.
There's these things called opinions.
A soul's like with bad level design.
NO FUCKING THANKS.
Amazingly bad review. Don't be fucking soft when a game fails so hard...
Man this game looks like dated, weeaboo shit. Dark Souls this is not.
