- Absence of You was shot at The Rechabite in Perth Western Australia, a hall which holds so many incredible memories for me.
It was filmed in one shot, which required - as well as the crew and all the artists you see listed below - a couple of dozen brilliant, tireless students from the Stage Management school at the WA Academy of Performing Arts.
Thank you also to Marcus Canning and the Rechabite crew. Legends all.

*Absence of You* (Lyrics)
I take a walk on the Seine
Cross Pont Neuf on my way to St Germain
Love-hearts on padlocks on wire in the mist
Where young lovers kiss
And swear to be true
Echoes of ten thousand sighs of love
And yet I
Feel only the absence of you
Out of a window on the thirtieth floor
Central Park shines with the coming of dawn
Through eyes rendered weary by jetlag and wine
I turn round to find
There’s a girl in my room
For a moment we kiss
But her vodka-soaked lips
Taste only of the absence of you
I don’t know
What all of this means
If you are not here with me
And I am lost
When we are apart
There’s a hole in my heart
That light passes through
And the pattern it creates
Is the shape of
The absence of you
Spring has been found hanging round Soho Square
So I take my coffee and newspaper there
To bask in the not-warm-enough April sun
With the workers who come
To eat Pret with no shoes
But the grass to the side
Of the patch where I’m lying
Is flat with the absence of you
I don’t know
What all this is for
If you are not near to me
And I can’t sleep
Sleep is no fun when the unruly sun
Will reveal the truth
A space in my bed as cold as the dead
Exactly the size and the shape of
The absence of you
And all of this beauty
Runs over and through me
And pools round my shoes
And the puddle it forms
Conforms to the shape of
The absence of you

Tim has really developed his brooding potential.
Yeah I saw that too. deep
If pain's what you want in an act, pain he can do. He can have a dark side too.
@@adrianchye3245 deep as, bro
Yeah, he’s deep!
It's very 2020.
My wife died last year and we love to hear Tim’s songs, today I hear this song and I couldn’t hold my tears, everyday till the end of my life I’m gonna miss her ... and this song reflects what I feel everyday...
Stay strong sir for the love u have for your wife will remain for her eternally
@@aguinimelissa4049 thank you Aguini 🙏🏻

@@typsy74 thank you Typsy 🙏🏻
He's come a long way in expressing his love for his wife since "If I Didn't Have You"
well, that one was fun, though, wasn't it? :D
@@reallollabunny it was indeed. But seeing this side of Tim is nice.
If I Didn’t Have You is an homage to his wife’s sense of humor, according to a Tim interview on ITV. A tongue-in-cheek love 💕 song.
@@maryfitzpatrick5357 his wife is awesome but we all knew that, didn't we? why else would they be together since they were 17?
Ahh, but If I Didn't Have You isn't a love song; it's a song about maths.
Saw Tim Minchin in Birmingham last year because my wife is a huge fan. I can't even remember what I expected because the show obliterated all my expectations. I've seen loads of bands. I've seen lots of musicals. I've seen many comedians. Of every show I've seen I enjoyed Tim's the most. Just mind blowing. The man and his team are amazing. I was instantly converted. I am a huge fan now.
I was in Birmingham too! (All the way from Rome!)
Definitely, he's rising above some of my 60's and 70's faves!
@Scout Dee second row! me too! the first night... the second noght I was in the balcony
Smart wife 😁
I converted my husband by taking him to see Tim at the Apollo in London.
"Inflatable You" was the first Minchin song I heard. I laughed my way through his material until I heard "White Wine in the Sun" and that stopped me dead in my laughing tracks.
This song feels like so much fulfilled potential I just needed to put this out there. Thanks, Rock and Roll Nerd.
a tear fell on the first verse, and i had to dry my eyes before i could read the last.except for the part where he's with another woman this song is my life since my wife died. i thought i had a problem listening to "carry you" without bawling like a baby this one ought to be interesting. as much as it hurts to feel her absence every minute of every day to have someone say in musical format what we can't actually find the words for (in my case at least) helps to let go of the pain and focus more on the fact that as long as she's in my heart she'll never really be gone, if that makes any sense. thank you tim from both of us cause i know she'll love this song as she did everything else you've done. she was a tremendous fan/potential stalker.
I’ll take lonely tonight absolutely WRECKED me. I kinda shoved my parents divorce deep down and it brought it back up and threw it in my face.
Sending love and understanding...Carry You is my lament and promise to my husband, likewise lost. Hugs. Xx
@@suzanneh2679 thank you, for your kindness. my children and i literally carry her, we all have necklaces with some of her ashes inside the remainder will be spread out in kuaii as soon as we don't have to spend 2 weeks in quarantine. one thing that helps me is i spend time talking to her every day. i mean full on out loud conversations (one sided though they are) about shows we watched together music everything and anything, and sometimes i can almost feel her and for me she's not here but not gone either if that makes sense. i hope the good times you spent together hold you the times you need them most as mine do.
@@lottecollin5268 anybody can write a sad song or a love song or a comedy song. but to write something that reaches inside of you and grabs you by the soul is a level of talent and empathy not a lot of artists can achieve. tim is one of those people and it shows.
Bless you mate. Stay strong and feel the love - we’ll all meet up again at the end 💞
is it me, or is Tim not only becoming a better musician but also becoming better-looking with age? I mean, he definitely looks like he's paying more attention to his body these days. I like it! and not only because it's attractive :D
I still remember that line from Rock'n'Roll Nerd: "He doesn't look good with his t-shirt off"
well, these days I don't think it's true anymore.
p.s. I know I am being superficial right now. I came here for the lyrics but I couldn't fail noticing the rest too ;-)
In the words of one of his peers: I'm a straight white male... but if Tim comes knocking looking like he did at the BAFTA's I don't think I'll choose lonely.
@@deltav864 hell to the yeah ^^
@@deltav864 that cracked me up so much omg
truly I swear I'm only 19 and even I'm confused about how I suddenly find a man over double my age so attractive hahahah
@@ellieattfield5784 Even worse when you're old enough to be his mother.
Goose bumps again and again!
Minchkins Assemble!! (Am I in the right place?!) Xx
Yes !
Is that what I am? LOL
Big fan of Tim…..would love to see him in person someday 🥰🎶💕and know my Jim would love it too.
Damn the film making for this is incredible... I mean, the song is brilliant too, but the fact it’s all one continuous shot just takes it to the next level...
Beautiful. I watch numerous times a day
Tim your wife is a lucky woman. These have been some of the greatest love songs of all time honestly. I am usually not into mushy stuff but these songs have been objectively amazing.
Wow, this guy's really deep, deep as bro!
Mr. Minchin, my wife has died in November 4th, 2020 and then I find this song... And now I am trying to avoid that my tears fall on my keyboard as I realize I am not strong as I thought I was...
She was a HUGE fan of your work. And this song, she would love it if she was here to listen to it right now.
She told me many times that she talked to you on Twitter, mr. Minchin. Her name's Renata. I believe you remember her. And now I realize this video was uploaded in the same month she died. Why?
Maybe she was telling me the truth when she said you owed her your piano, one of your legs and your wife. And I know you've got the reference.
Thank you for creating this - My heart thanks you, you sweet unconsciable you
It's rare you get to witness the evolution of a musical and lyrical genuis. I'm so glad I am fortunate enough to have witnessed this one.
Tim Minchin is a genius!
I first heard this song when @gabbiboltmusic posted her version during lockdown at Easter time. Gabbi pleaded for Tim to release it and he finally has. The song brings spears and smiles to my heart as it revisits more than 30 years of memories with my wife that we lost more than two years ago. Thank you for the skill of reopening images and feelings Tim.
(Up to now) my all-time favorite Tim Minchin song. Can't wait to see if he can change my mind with something new down the road. I prefer this version to the version on Back. There is power behind the chorus here. It's calmer on Back, and this really needs a good belt behind it. A power ballad, if you will.
Wow. I fell in love with your voice watching JCS. Seeing and hearing this is so emotional I can’t imagine anyone not being touched by this.
Thank you for showing the world that you are so much more than a silly piano man.
A wonderful --- another master --- it's --- --- --- just beyond awesomesauce!
I love this so much, but I would kill to hear an acoustic version of this with just Tim and the piano
the lyrics astound me I want to be loved like this
There’s that Rock n Roll nerd 😍 Superb! Thanks for sharing your art with us all Tim x
So truly beautiful - just like the man.xx
Such a beautiful song! I still remember performing a small cameo role in Mother Courage at The Rechabite and recall clearly being blown away by Tim’s creativity and skill. I was in awe of him back then. And we are talking over 20 years ago. Well done Tim. Gorgeous gorgeous song! ❤️❤️
This song hits home coming from a cult Christian school survivor. Here in Canada we have orange shirt day for the native residential school kids who have survived or have family who haven't and that's a wonderful thought to remember but what about us kids in Christian cult schools. Nobody speaks about it except for Tim who wrote a song.Thank you from the bottom of my heart.❤❤
I heard Tim perform this song in San Diego before he left to go home, and it brought me to tears. I am SO PSYCHED that he's finally releasing it! The beautiful special edition vinyl is going to look great in my collection too. Can't wait!
There's a Vinyl!?
I was also at that show! its was truly amazing! I love that he preformed most of the songs on his new album at that concert!
@@Yui714 Follow the link in the description. I ordered mine - can't wait!
@@Yui714 I even bought a signed one 😍
If he makes love the way he handles that piano, Sarah is one lucky wife.
Tim, you are incredibly beautiful.
I love how Tim keeps evolving. Tim if you happen to read this keep just being you.
So much shiver making. Thank you, Tim!
The lyrics are so beautiful, and I haven’t heard it played yet... I’ll need tissues...
Same over here mate, same over here...
So birth control is not an issue?
Thank you, Mr. Minchin, for exposing so much of us. You always allow me to feel remarkably human.
That stage and film crew are amazing to do that in a single shot.
Good on him for using the students too.
Tears and goosebumps.
Oh my goodness my heart just hurts with the agony of this song. You always have the gift of making people feel every emotion through music and this song is no exception. Bravo Tim, you are pure genius xx
I just love this
Love this... As someone who travels too much this hits hard
I have always loved Tim, since Jesus Christ Superstar. All his satire and silliness was a joy but this is so transcendent. How lucky are we that he is still with us being too loud and staying too long. For the record, it will never be too long, Thank you Tim.
The best storyteller in music. Magnificent, Tim❣️
Thanks, Bud. I've been a fan of yours from the start. I just went through a devastating breakup. You've given a voice to my heart. Respect and much love.
Also as a psychologist i appriciate the verbage. Does "you" really have a shape? The Rorschach would dictate no, but we all understand the form. Just saying.
The fact that it's a serious song is something I expect, he's an amazing musician. However, I am still not used to seeing him in shoes.
Specifically for this song, but for basically his entire portfolio as well, Tim's lyrics always say SO much. Great depth can be found in a perfectly worded line which, at first glance (listen), might not seem so profound. But listening again brings out more and more meaning. They say a picture is worth a thousand words; but just one stanza of Tim Minchin's lyrics (juxtaposed with heart rending chord changes) can elicit INFINITE emotions, all felt at once. Just amazing.
I’ve had apart together and airport piano on repeat for weeks and I literally could not be more ready for more
Tim is my new hero, comedian, musician, philosopher.
So beautiful!!!!! Love the strings and the 3/4 time....perfect waltz!!! 💜💜💜💜💜
Why hasn't this gone to number
One shot?! Holy hell dude, that’s impressive
Came here after reading Tim's facey post about the comments - cannot understand the 22 negs on the vid, it was gorgeous, cant wait for the album release. Keep making this sort of stuff, with a few more George Pells if you please
This is phenomenal, there is a certain Whitlamsyness to the beginning, the smoulderingly intense chorus that is unmistakably Minchin, and the brilliant texture and dynamic of everything in between is, to me, proof of Minchin's immense musical ability. I can only imagine the mountains of work that went into this, and for that we all thank you.
Absence as a presence. The lyrics are beautiful.
Aaaww that was lovely.
Always love how you uniquely use lyrics, like "the not warm enough April sun".
What a gem!
This is one of those songs where a Cover would never do it justice and just result in being much less than the original masterpiece.
love your works. thank you mr minchin
*Violist:* Alix Hamilton ... Guess he did throw away his shot. (Niche joke for the orchestra musicians & theater fan combination ;))
Goosebumps when the string and brass section kicked in, can't wait for the album!
Hehe - I'm glad that I'm not the only one who loved all of that (fellow musician here 😉)
When people say that time munchkin is dead. (Trend wise) I will always love the beautiful music and comedy this bloody legend gives. Even when he dies his soul and heart will carry on. Great song Tim.
I haven’t heard this song at all save for the two thirty second clips, so I am as excited as anything!
Might be premiering at 3am here, but you bet I’ll be awake to see this as soon as it drops.
It has been a little over 3 weeks since my mom died. I miss her so much that my mind threatens to break. This song is bringing tears to my eyes. I see others have shared their grief here. My heart is with all of you. I love you, Tim.
Listened to the premiere with my phone speaker on the pickup of my electric guitar, through a small 15W amp, it rocked balls and melted my heart! 💔💘
Yep another beauty!
So much for "beauty just doesn't suit me", ay Tim?
right? I was thinking more along the lines of "doesn't look good with his t-shirt off" but yeah, big difference there. a good example that age is just a number and we can make progress at any age ^_^
Oh my God ! This is such a memory of how I felt as an airhostess..... Paris, New York, Tokoy.... who cares if the one you love is not with you ! Thank you for this one Tim !
Tim, Tim, Tim, it's very, Very Beautiful - in the broad sense of the word - Beauty as a concept. Incredibly sensual (with many shades and textures) poetic, musical and cinematic drawing. Many thanks to EVERYONE who worked on this piece - it's very high!
Hey Tim!! Love your new album! Can’t wait to hear the rest 😘😘😘
Even the first few silent seconds of the video made me feel the absence of Tim.
Beautiful lyrics
Pure, beautiful poetry.
Another Awesome choon. Gifted artist! Love your stuff
Here is a NOT(maybe) recomendation: listen to this song on repeat; the most you will get is a tendency to fall in love with the love you aready had fallen for some many times with aready
Damn... I'm speechless...
Amazing, both the video and the song. Love it!
Even in the darkest time your songs bring light, hope and inspiration. Thank you, Tim! Hope to see your show live in Europe!
This is truly beautiful. Thank you.
so pumped for this, saw him play it in his tour in Cardiff in October last year and have been wanting to hear it again since!
In a word: Wow!
I really hope there's a behind the scenes video of the making of this clip, because some of those transitions are baffling for how they pulled off swapping out stuff as quick as they did.
The most amazing song I have ever heard. THE ABSENCE OF YOU….. blows me away!!!
It’s my anniversary tomorrow yet my partner is on the other side of the world and I deal with the absence of him. So I understand this completely ❤️
This song could not be more beautiful
someday this man will play piano as good as Elton John!
Already does
**avuncular wink**
Lovely Ballad from a Rock'n'Roll nerd.
as for anybody who worked in theatre like me for the last 25 yaers... missing xmas with your kids Because Dads doing panto... not putting your kids to bed because dads at theatre...great song love it x
Simply magnificent
Extraordinary. He reaches right in there where it matters, twists and turns you and leaves you all the better for it. Incredible artist.
So beautiful.
Tim is a genius
This definitely needs a "making of" if you've got bts footage
I love this song... Tim is honestly a true Aussie talent, from his music, the Foxtel Mini series "Upright" and the Broadway adaptation of Matilda.... One Awesome Australian
Thank you tim
when tim proves what most of his fans already knew; he can write real, meaningful, beautiful songs if he wants to
Absolutely love!!!! ❤️❤️
This song is beautiful
Just lovely Tim!
This was all one continuos shot! THIS WAS ALL ONE CONTINUOS SHOT!
Not easy to do.
Just 100% brilliant. Love u for ur comedy and songs and love these songs too. So different but so SO AMAZING xxx
Thank you for this Tim it was beautiful
I am a newcomer to Tim’s music. This song touched my heart. My best friend passed away in April 2020 and my life has changed forever. Tim’s lyrics are spot on when you’re without a person that means so much. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Sound like a no1 hit get it in the charts!!!
Bad idea listening to this on my commute...now im the weirdo crying on the train...
That song touched me to my core
