When I'm scared, or I'm unsure, I listen to this song and I don't feel so alone. There's no one who makes me feel the way Tim does when he sings. It's not even about religion, or suffering, it's about sharing all the things we feel like we go through alone.
Tim sings with such wonderful soul and he adds meaning to every word he sings. He has the ability to move people with these raw and heartfelt performances. In my opinion, he does a fantastic version of this song, and it has the potential to really touch people :) Not everyone has to agree, because we are all different, unique and individual, but for me, he does it brilliantly :)
Lucky Flynn's theme song (Upright reference). Hauntingly beautiful. Sometimes I wish that I didn't love everything Tim does. At least perhaps not to the obsessive level that I'm currently at. But, oh god, what a gorgeous obsession it is.
Just beautiful. I am glad to see Tim get the recognition he deserves for being a truly talented musician, not just a comedian. He's a brilliant comedian too. But he is first and foremost a brilliant musician.
I think he is a wonderfully gifted and talented individual. I wish I had half his talent. I love all his songs and the way he plays the piano. I hope he never stops entertaining. Extremely wonderful gift to the world.
Fantastic I've not heard this man sing n play before wow I've missed so much it seems that was a brilliant performance of a truly wonderful song 👏👏👏👏👏👏✌🏻✌🏻
Tim is absolutely AWESOME!!! Just saw him in Atlanta this week and he even ended the night with 2 encores with one being Hallelujah. Amazing voice and he's funny as hell!
Tim how can you say your not spiritual, you have a true spirit of self. You've brought me joy and tears an a knowledge of what's good and important. Thank you.
This cat blows my mind...seriously, what a brilliant person. I strongly recommend that if you like this song, check out White Wine in the Sun too...its also beautiful. From hilarious to downright touching, Tim Minchin really is something else.
I think I'm pointing out the obvious, and I realize it's a rhetorical question, but it's because he's so amazingly talented. Crazy crazy talent in that man's voice and hands. Truly amazing stuff!
Charlie Rich is the one that wrote it and sung it but it never was produced yes he was a country dude he was an icon in American country music a legend
Tim Minchin does it again. Technical playing perfection? I could care less. He makes up for any flaws with this intellect and presentation. You go Tim ;)
WOWZA :0-) Like this guys style of comedy, also plays some really great songs but never thought he was a GREAT singer.Kudos man, absolutely loved this to pieces.
It's beauty song all around. A piano song, really. Composer/Vegas "American" entertainer was the late Charlie Rich. "Charlie Rich/He sure can sing, that sonofbitch." -Tom Waits Nice version, but give the credit due, pard.
"...some American dude". Well Tim gave Charlie Rich his due today on BBC radio when he selected the track as one of the 8 he would take to a desert island. It is a beaut, pity it was eclipsed by the A-side of Charlie's smash hit single in 1973.
I absolutely adore that he chose such a religious song without being remotely religious himself. I see how there might be a disconnect for theists watching this, but as an atheist I can listen and identify wholly with the singer---and listening to gospel (which I love regardless) I never get that chance. Someone like Tim singing a spiritual, and so beautifully...rare thing. Perfect for me.
inperfection is often what makes music great. The little fuck ups and the odd broken note... You can get technical perfection over time with enough practise but you can't learn that kind of depth or passion and you can't buy tone like that. Having said that this was my idea of perfect. Yet agian my mind was blown and my love of this man and his talent has grown even further :) x
@CattailsandRoses Sometimes home is where we need to be - particularly when no 'loving God' sees fit to intervene in our suffering. Home is a place of familiarity, of rest. To call this a 'suicidal anthem' is to tragically misunderstand it.
There is one dodgy note at 4:11 which you can almost see him trying not to smile. Don't take this the wrong way.....I am a huge fan of his and love the song. Just it makes me laugh every time :P
@imaginaryboy238 I've seen him do it live - he got it off his brother, who got it off the Notting Hillbillies, who got it off Charlie Rich. Giving all those guys credit was probably not the wordy introduction the Sun wanted, but I agree.
@ladyjanegray5 I admire his ability to continue to play/sing at such a high standard in such a pressured situation. As a "wannabe" musician I can hear that the note 4:11 is slightly off and as a "wannabe" musician I understand the cheeky smile that comes across his face as him laughing at himself.
No, I am not better than anyone else. And there are volumes of people who understand music, each in their own way , as I do with my understanding. Pretentious is the view that on any given day, at any given moment a performer , in possession of great talent; could possibly execute a performance that was not as it might have been. Nothing more, nothing less. And, as I have stated numerous times- the probability that the sound is 'off' in Tim's rendition is due to the replicating equipment.
If you want to hear a version that is saturated with passion and emotion and angst-listen to Brendan Croker, done with the Notting Hillbillies. The song is very emotion evoking, that's for certain, as it was when I heard Charlie Rich perform it. Tom Jones, and many others, as well as Minchin have covered the song. I am indeed moved by renditions of this song. Just less so by this cover.
Just heard Tim on ''Desert Island Disc'' - nice bloke! Thanks Tim - love the eye-liner - it suits you mate. You said you only wash your hair once a fortnight - does your scalp itch?
"Some American Dude,"? Charlie Rich had one of the best voices in pop history. Even if some of those #1 country hits were pretty annoying, he did a lot of great stuff, including some interesting Northern Soul and Rock and Roll early in his career.
No one should be offended, and it certainly appears he was giving full attention to the performance. There is nothing shameful in the performance, other that being off pitch- THAT is the detraction from what could have been a very competent cover of a classic tune.
It might not be on pitch, I couldn't say, I don't have a very good ear for that sort of thing, but if you cant feel the passion and the soul coming through and be moved by this I feel sorry for you
Alright kids calm down. 'Some American guy' is pretty obviously used because it's just so obvious it's Charlie Rich being referred to. Therefore we make a joke based on the idea of a famous person being unknown. It's been done countless times elsewhere.
No, I'm not deaf. The piano is off , as is his voice. Perhaps it's auto-tune , or the equipment that was used to do the recording. In any case, a less than stellar rendition of a classic song.
@musicanwannabe It sounds as though, rather than being out of tune, he's just played a different chord (progression) that doesn't fit the note. That note would fit the 6th, but not necessarily the 4th - which, I *think*, is what he's playing. Don't quote me though, cos I'm half asleep at the mo. Either way, it's a cute little flaw.
There is nothing condescending about observations made about a particular rendition of a song. Sometimes, as difficult as it may be to grasp, some technical issues detract from a performance. That was my point about Minchin's rendition being off pitch- and it's more than likely , as I mentioned before- due to an auto tune or other technical issue- which makes what might have been a great rendition less than.
@roseofthebrook I don't know if your trying to argue with me or agree with me there. In the context of my conversation I was making exactly the same point as you; some said to
Have listened to this many times, still just as lovely as the first time.
When I'm scared, or I'm unsure, I listen to this song and I don't feel so alone. There's no one who makes me feel the way Tim does when he sings. It's not even about religion, or suffering, it's about sharing all the things we feel like we go through alone.

Totally agree. I love Tim's brilliant comedy but i cant help wishing he would spend more time on music of this nature.
Amazingly talented artist.
Lucky Flynn's theme song (Upright reference). Hauntingly beautiful. Sometimes I wish that I didn't love everything Tim does. At least perhaps not to the obsessive level that I'm currently at. But, oh god, what a gorgeous obsession it is.
Love the "Upright" reference.
haha! I just discovered Tim a few months ago and I am also at the obsessive level now.
I'm currently watching this sat in an airport waiting for my flight home after several months of being away. Feels appropriate :) Very beautiful song.
Tim is a next-level talent. Lately I have been spending more time with him than I have with my wife 😀
Just beautiful. I am glad to see Tim get the recognition he deserves for being a truly talented musician, not just a comedian. He's a brilliant comedian too. But he is first and foremost a brilliant musician.
Dont have the words to descibe how much i LOVE Tims version of this. Amazing.
sang with so much passion, beautiful
I think he is a wonderfully gifted and talented individual. I wish I had half his talent. I love all his songs and the way he plays the piano. I hope he never stops entertaining. Extremely wonderful gift to the world.
Fantastic I've not heard this man sing n play before wow I've missed so much it seems that was a brilliant performance of a truly wonderful song 👏👏👏👏👏👏✌🏻✌🏻
Un-Freakin-Believable!! There seems to be no limit to Tim's talent. An absolute legend.
Tim is absolutely AWESOME!!! Just saw him in Atlanta this week and he even ended the night with 2 encores with one being Hallelujah. Amazing voice and he's funny as hell!
love love love Tim's voice and sounds really beautiful and heart felt
this is absolutley beautiful.
Tim how can you say your not spiritual, you have a true spirit of self. You've brought me joy and tears an a knowledge of what's good and important. Thank you.
I just can't stop listening to it ... :)
this sent shivers up my spine, I love his voice.
Just an absolutely unbelievable talent.....
Such a beautiful song, I've seen Tim do some sentimental stuff before, but this one really gets me.
Listen to this after a couple of wines... * sigh* Bring on the tears ...
Tim is absolutely awesome and what a beautiful song
I don't even know if I believe in souls but I'll be damned. I feel like my soul needs this right now.
This cat blows my mind...seriously, what a brilliant person. I strongly recommend that if you like this song, check out White Wine in the Sun too...its also beautiful. From hilarious to downright touching, Tim Minchin really is something else.

This song sends shivers down my spine, in a nice way.
Charlie Rich is the one that wrote it and sung it but it never was produced yes he was a country dude he was an icon in American country music a legend
great song, great voice, great… thank you

My god I can't stop listening to this song.
Everyday I wish this was released on iTunes.
That would be fantastic

This makes me cry every time.. :)
Vilken fantastisk låt, och framförd med en känsla som får mig att gråta hela tiden.
ÄLSKAR den..
great version, soulful.
Tim Minchin does it again. Technical playing perfection? I could care less. He makes up for any flaws with this intellect and presentation. You go Tim ;)
New respect for this fella after this.
Wow. I want that played at my funeral.
It's weird, isn't it. I thought the same thing first time I heard it, and I'm an a-theist.
i love tim so much x
gorgeous, honest, raw cover
You can find Charlie Rich version also on the youtube
WOWZA :0-) Like this guys style of comedy, also plays some really great songs but never thought he was a GREAT singer.Kudos man, absolutely loved this to pieces.

It's beautiful and a bit heartbreaking.
I love how Tim feels the need to comfort everyone he's going to do it straight. It's not a god bashing trick.
Beautiful :)
awh. Minchin touches me. Well.. you know, i wish.
Why does every song Tim sings that's not openly hilarious make me cry???
Because he has the magical ability of being able to connect with your soul with his voice his expression and his playing
I absolutely adore that he chose such a religious song without being remotely religious himself. I see how there might be a disconnect for theists watching this, but as an atheist I can listen and identify wholly with the singer---and listening to gospel (which I love regardless) I never get that chance. This is raw

@CattailsandRoses Sometimes home is where we need to be - particularly when no 'loving God' sees fit to intervene in our suffering. Home is a place of familiarity, of rest. To call this a 'suicidal anthem' is to tragically misunderstand it.
Cool, agree, and agree.
There is one dodgy note at 4:11 which you can almost see him trying not to smile. Don't take this the wrong way.....I am a huge fan of his and love the song. Just it makes me laugh every time :P
@soppehuet He's where i spend the vast majority of my time lol
Great song :)
@imaginaryboy238 I've seen him do it live - he got it off his brother, who got it off the Notting Hillbillies, who got it off Charlie Rich. Giving all those guys credit was probably not the wordy introduction the Sun wanted, but I agree.
good job on the song ..I also like the version by the walk abouts
Stunning, perfect vocals are not really what Tim is about. Don't watch him if you don't like it. :)
I love this bastard.
It's the quality of the recording..
Wow.
Mesmer I zing.
You must be deaf. As an ex piano tuner I can tell you the piano is spot on. His voice is fine too.
No, I am not better than anyone else. And there are volumes of people who understand music, each in their own way , as I do with my understanding. Some American guy happens to be The late Great Charlie Rich to you who.
That's the song I want to hear when I die
If you want to hear a version that is saturated with passion and emotion and angst-listen to Brendan Croker, done with the Notting Hillbillies. He's a comedian so his dialogue needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. But he gives Charlie's song full respect..... beautiful version
Wow. You're the most tolerant Christian on the whole fucking internet and I love you. *brohug*
Wow
ITA with Equihan. If you don't like it Sherri KcKee, don't listen. I quite love it.
Just heard Tim on ''Desert Island Disc'' - nice bloke! Thanks Tim - love the eye-liner - it suits you mate. You said you only wash your hair once a fortnight - does your scalp itch?
@Equihan You find capital letters offensive? doyson is not shouting, he/she has been typing, or if you prefer, have typed a reply.
Written by Charlie Rich
@Equihan yeah, but it doesn't keep him from respecting religious songs. They actually show off his voice very well.
nice
Truly touching song even for this atheist.
"Some American Dude,"? Charlie Rich had one of the best voices in pop history. Even if some of those #1 country hits were pretty annoying, he did a lot of great stuff, including some interesting Northern Soul and Rock and Roll early in his career.
@doyson Hold CTRL and scroll the mouse wheel. That should zoom the page. :)
I'm a militant atheist and I almost cried. =(
So what it's a bit off key? Still a great performance and a great song. It's about delivery and soul, not about being pitch perfect.
I love this
No one should be offended, and it certainly appears he was giving full attention to the performance. There is nothing shameful in the performance, other that being off pitch- THAT is the detraction from what could have been a very competent cover of a classic tune.

@Equihan its cool on autodrive

@08gilliesa yep, and two sisters. :)
awesome. would like to se a hookup with knofler on guitar here
