One of the things I love most about this channel is Stephen leaving his own errors in. It would be so easy to edit everything to make him look better than he is at this time in his life. But by showing that even arguably the greatest ever player makes mistakes, it keeps it real. It's fascinating watching the breaks where something of his old fluency returns (not being funny, but his play was great against Mark Williams' son) as they seem more special that way. I'm so impressed with his attitude in being honest about himself. Top man.
Your comment was so spot on........ until you mentioned stephen being 'arguably' the best player ever! Even stephen would objectively agree that Stephen Lee is the grFatest to ever hold a cue! 😂

I haven’t played in YEARS (moved the u.s. in 92 and started a laying pool a couple of years ago). Had a recent work trip to Ireland and found a snooker club just around the corner from the office. Watched this practice for a couple of hours over a couple of days and then played with a bloke from work. I had a 38 and a 20 break in the same frame! The 38 should have kept going but played a terrible shot on a red to get out of position. My previous highest break way back when was 32 lol Long story short, probably going to quit my job and turn pro now lol😂😅😊😂 Cheers Mr H!
I managed a 52 break on my lunch break years ago with a colleague; easily my highest ever. I'm currently on step 3 but haven't managed to do it in fifty attempts so far. Annoyed cos want to get to stage 4, which I suspect I'll actually find easier. That 52 seems doable, though my best was done in an actual match (mostly blues and pinks to middle pockets).
I love how don't just edit out a miss, it shows it happens and you keep going, Unlike some peoples videos where they just edit it all perfect. Watching these videos just feels so down to earth and makes it enjoyable.
This is my favorite video on your channel so far! I love you or other good player talking through routines shot by shot and explaining the thought process. And also the routine with the 4 reds and blacks is pretty important to learn the basic shots around the black spot. Ty so much and I recommend you make this a series: Hendry explains Practice routines or something similar. Have a nice day everyone!

Thanks a lot, Stephen. You have no idea what this video meant to me watching it. I had a super old ash cue that was robbed (including the case) a few years ago. Spent the whole of my teenage years playing snooker during school years (lunch time) at a local club and on weekends and sort of fell out of love with playing, but I still always watched it. Out of interest I said I'd check if there was a local club in my area and found a Home Rule club - 5 mins away - and sourced a cue on eBay. Tomorrow I am signing up for membership at the club and will start off with that blue/red break. Pfft... thank you so much!!!

Great video as usual Stephen, especially loved when you talked about what should be going on inside your head to distract from any negative thoughts, would love to see more videos similar to that. Also quick question how come you were using triangle chalk again?
I've practiced these a few sessions now as a complete beginner. In the very beginning even the first one was hard but now I can easily do it 3-4 times in a row. I have cleared the 2nd one once. The jump in difficulty from 1 to 2 is quite big but I feel I'm getting better. You really have to plan ahead for each shot and control the cue ball which is super hard as a beginner. Hoping to clear the 2nd one 3 times in a row before 2025.
Amazing video, I've shared this with my team mates who are between the 30 and 50 break standard. They like to use power 10 for everything! I hope they use your advice to improve 😅 Personally I've been lucky enough to make centuries in practice but difficult to translate that in matches. Loving the videos! Would love to see a video on how to cope with the yips on different shots as I’m struggling with them recently would this be possible.
Lets remember the standard he had to play back when he won so many titles the only real competitors he had was Davis and White. Ronnie won most of his titles with a much stronger field with so many top players that can win it any day just to name a few Trump, Wilson, Higgins, Selby, Williams, Robertson, Allen, Murphy the list goes on and on. So in conclusion he was a great player for the opponents he had to face, did he have any of the type of opponents I mentioned he would definitely not have won much or any. Cracking vid, i made a 57 in practice the other day which is my highest but i did exactly what you said, was on the blue and thought i can make a 60+ here, then missed a simple blue, but my game has come on so much since watching these vids
That point you mentioned about getting excited when you're nearing a milestone break - so can relate to that! I was on a 68 in a league match, and had a diag blue into green pocket, with nothing to do with the cueball as the red was near. I was in the zone till everyone stopped and my opponent changed his tone in announcing the break. After realising what break i was on, and what i could have ended up with, i (of course) bottled the blue. 68 still remains my highest match break 😔
Just as an indication on how much quality has improved over the years in snooker 1977 Masters, won by Doug Mountjoy. The highest break of the whole tournament was 81.

I was just saying to myself what if you miss as you went for the red using the rest and you said it's no problem as I'm using the rest! And then you miss it! Brilliant Stephen I'm glad you left that in and had a laugh yourself. I'm going to a snooker club with my best mate soon but haven't tried snooker for years and I have only potted two balls in a row! However I've been watching a lot of your cue tips so I've learnt a lot in theory! Just need to practice now. Wish me luck! I'll need it! 😂
Looking at the cue ball strike marker thing, I was surprised how little he used side, almost not all. Even when he did, it was very slight. It's amazing how much you can do with a cute ball with screw, stun and follow through.
I wish we had these vids when I was playing. In snooker, I didn't progress much beyond the intermediate level - 30s & 40s consistently - the occasional 50 or 60 - rarely made 70s & 80s - & I made centuries once in a blue moon (maybe 5 of them in all) These days, there's no reason why a player can't reach a decent level if he's prepared to put the time & work into it. These coaches & former players tell you everything you need to progress up the rankings.
As someone who has made several 20+ breaks but never got 30 or more, I'm glad to see something to try here. Very helpful video Stephen, and it's funny to see that even you can be guilty of the unforgivable sin of missing blacks off the spot.

Love this ! Thank you
I was just saying to myself what if you miss as you went for the red using the rest and you said it's no problem as I'm using the rest!
Love the warts 'n all approach.
Excellent video! 🔥
“It’s all simple stuff”.. proceeds to miss an easy red 😅😅 love your stuff Stephen.
Love you big brother for your delight personality towards other fellow players😊
The only reason this video is out is because of the suspicions from the last video that Stephen can't make a 100 anymore. 😂
I think with these videos, putting himself in a beginner's shoes, Stephen's finding a bit of joy in the game again.
I wish we had these vids when I was playing.
In snooker, I didn't progress much beyond the intermediate level - 30s & 40s consistently - the occasional 50 or 60 - rarely made 70s & 80s - & I made centuries once in a blue moon (maybe 5 of them in all)
These days, there's no reason why a player can't reach a decent level if he's prepared to put the time & work into it. These coaches & former players tell you everything you need to progress up the rankings.
so good, I play pool mostly but this is still helpful, thanks!
As someone who has made several 20+ breaks but never got 30 or more, I'm glad to see something to try here. Very helpful video Stephen, and it's funny to see that even you can be guilty of the unforgivable sin of missing blacks off the spot.
