  • I love dungeons and dragons as well as role playing games not only because they immerse you in a very rich thematic world but I love the idea of world building, character building and exploring a narrative through the eyes of a character that I have created, refined and developed over time. Seeing their journey and witnessing their story arc is such a fun and engaging gaming experience to have not to mention you get to make lots of friends along the way! In this video we look at storey based board games and how different games tell a story! There are so many different creative ways to do so.

    These types of games are right up my alley!! In fact, I have Mice &Mystics but I don't have anyone to play it with.
    And I LOVE Betrayal House on the Hill except I'm terrified the whole time that I'm going to be the bad guy! Which, I guess adds to the fear factor...

    I have played through the entirety of Gloomhaven with my wife. We really enjoy the combat, character building, and making decisions based on what kind of fantasy world we want to inhabit.

    I love narrative or story based games. Out of the ones I have played, Folklore the Affliction is probably my favorite. I really enjoyed Oltréé and Spire's End too. I'm also a fan of emergent narrative games, like Nemesis, Shadows of Brimstone, and Robinson Crusoe, where the real story is how things shake out over the course of the game.
    One of these days I'll get Sleeping Gods to the table... as well as Etherfields and ISS Vanguard. The pandemic really damaged my game group, we just haven't been able to meet up regularly since.

      Oh I have always wondered what Oltree was like. Would you recommend it? How deep is the story?
      I love Robinson Crusoe, whilst its more Euroey, I love how previous events can come back to haunt you. Yes getting a regular keen group together can be tricky when a lot of these story games thrive on larger player sizes.

      @@BoardGameSanctuary The whole thing is full of little story bits, as you're essentially playing as knights trying to patrol and protect an area. It's scenario based, not really a long connective narrative. I appreciate how you can change the difficulty based on the mission goals you choose and the asymmetric player powers. It's also just a gorgeous production. I'd recommend taking a look at one of the playthroughs online of the first scenario to see if it's something you'd be willing to pick up or if it's just something you want to try when you get a chance. My friends and I really enjoy it as it scratches that narrative hero questing itch without making us invest in a 20 plus hour adventure. There's currently two small expansions available, and it sounds like they're actually making a significant expansion with more scenarios in the next year or so. I think it plays best at 2 to 3 players , and if you solo the game I recommend running two characters.

    Great video! One of my favorite story driven games is Fallen Land. It's actually interesting that this huge story game is not a campaign game. Another favorite is Dungeon Degenerates.

    Back in the day, I too was a fan of the Choose your own Adventure stories. I found a game with character-building RPG turn-based narrative-driven awesomeness slightly reminiscent of these; which can be found for a relatively decent price. If you are like me, you may want to look at Legacy of Dragonholt. I believe that this game suits this topic well. Best wishes to all. Game on!

      Yes Legacy of Dragonholt was a big story rich game when it was released. I will have to go and revisit it!

    That's a very good list. My favourite adventure game is Tales of Arabian Nights, I wish i had bought it when i could. Let's hope for a reprint in the future.

      Yes Arabian Nights was one of those story based games that people used to talk about heaps. Im so sad people don't talk about it any more. Yes a reprint would be cool!

    Probably you didn't mention it because most people already know it by know, but Pandemic Legacy is one of the best examples of getting players invested on a story and the development of fate of their characters.
    Fog of Love is another great game formateo players where the mechanics support the story and theme, and where you can make the decisions to see where the story takes you.

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  8 месяцев назад

      Yes I love Pandemic Legacy. Its more like the challenges helps you to feel immersed in the story itself. Fog of Love was fun especially describing each other's traits and seeing what choices you both make! Great suggestions!

      Yes I was always anxious in being the betrayer in house on the hill. I think Ive been the betrayer possibly 4-5 times now. I got used to it and it is actually quite fun!
