    Having played 2 campaigns and the heck of this game, I 💯% subscribe to your review. There are real hurdles to overcome first (sorting out the cards was horrendous). BUT I eventually had a blast. I felt like wandering at will. The absence of a timer (I do not consider threat tokens to be a sort of timer even if you're surely more objective about the mechanism than I am) gives you this opportunity to stroll and cut trolls at your own pace.

I've watched many videos in the past about the game and always came away still not knowing if it would be for me or not but you nailed the game's pros and cons. Really well done! Thank you.

    Great review. I agree totally. Once you get past the initial pain of learning the game, the game becomes very easy to play and flows very well. And as far as the price point goes, with the amount of hours that I have put into playing the game - about 150 to 200 hours - the overall entertainment value for me is very high.

I'm not at a point where I can say I "regret" my purchase but time will tell, of course. That said, I agree re: price(s) of things for the game. A little outrageous to be honest. Also, I noticed there is a lot of variant content on BGG which is good (cards, adventures you can print). Thanks for the video presentation. (P.S. I do agree re: Combat).

They all said it's a great game and not one said anything about the number of issues it has. I feel you give it a very honest review. You don't just focus on the good or bad but rather a fair assesment of all the game has to offer. At the end of the day I will pass on this game and it's a shame because there are some great mechanics to it but like you I don't mind spending good money for a premium game but they seem to have fallen short on all the corners they cut. I have come around on games before but for this one my problem is that I can't see myself ever playing this game "right" with the current rules so it will always bother me. I just think the rulebook is so incomplete and I don't feel like filling in the gaps, and online documentation seems insufficient atm, but I could be wrong. Hoping for a rulebook 2.0 but won't hold my breath. Glad you enjoyed it in the end though.
    Btw, if you want to reinforce how insulting the value proposition of this game for $150 USD is, compare it side by side with the Oathsworn standee edition. Just realized this the other day and it's WILD what the same price can get you in contrast lol.

    When Modiphius launched Fallout Wasteland Warfare, I was all over it. I bought every product they released for the game during the 3 first waves of the line. Then, they stopped including physical stat cards for the units inside the box of minis. Instead, you had to pay to get the digital cards for the army builder app. The price of minis keep rising and rising. They keep adding a ton of fiddly parts and new rules to the game that made it barely playable. I stopped buying products for the game and nowadays I don't play anymore. So when they released Skyrim, I stayed strong and resisted the urge to buy it because I got burned once.

    And yes, I can confirm the rulebook is terrible and needs to be redone . And from the ashes expansion did not come with any kind of instructions I can definitely confirm that.
    I do like the game a lot, though, even though the rulebook is terrible. I’ve completed both campaigns as solo. And campaign one I’ve completed also as a two player and a three player.
    I have a four person two separate ones going on where we’re both in campaign one still. I have yet to try the from the ashes expansion with it.

    So glad you're covering this Daniel! I know you usually don't cover big box AAA stuff, but just by its nature, this quickly became a "niche indie game" just due its apparent lack of mainstream success. Gonna watch all your thoughts and maybe comment more, but for me, so much seemed come down to that they likely paid a ridiculous amount for the IP, which contributed to the costs, expected it to have sky high returns, but actually put some pretty creative designers on it. But as the KS delivered, it seemed pretty clear to Modiphius they weren't going to make their money back, and they just dropped it hard. There was ZERO after launch support, errata, anything, barely even answering questions on BGG, I was one of the people on there kinda struggling with others trying to figure it out together when it released. They just moved on to their next game almost immediately. Huge shame, but seems like they set the goalposts for success too far out, made a sort of niche open world exploration game, but set the goals for a huge mainstream success and considered it a failure. Compare that with the Witcher: Old World, which I think hewed much more to a mainstream approach and made a huge amount of money, but to me is a much more "toned down" experience.

    • @Darthus
      @Darthus 5 месяцев назад +1

      A follow up thought. Listening to you talk about your pros and cons, and reflecting on my experience, this feels like the designer aimed for a really rich, ambitious, open world game, and pretty much landed it. But so many of the other parts of the game (likely handled by others at Modiphius) from art, to pricing, to manual editing, visual layout, all got short changed. And it distinctly feels like at a certain point (probably after they didn't have a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign) Modiphius already had made the decision to kinda take it as a loss, just release the thing and move on, which also might have contributed to so many polishing parts feeling unfinished. I remember actually looking up the designer, because I wanted to play more of their games and felt somewhat sad that what was obvious was a huge amount of design effort, got released in this way. Haven't fully finished your video yet, so not sure if you go there, but there's a HUGE amount of modding support on Modiphius' website, basically all the assets that you can edit on your own, and in the BGG variants forum there's whole new modes and adventures. They obviously had their sights set long on this one and cut it short, sadly.

    Grateful for your review. It looks like an interesting play--like a neat, unique set of plays systems--but falls far short of what we should get for the price. So much of this game screams 'cheap', from the art, to the components, to putting the rulebooks together. However, I'm not sure what challenges Modiphius faced. It's a truism that IP games tend to be less than great because the developers are paying a substantial 'tax' to the IP owner. Costs they have to cut from the quality of the game itself... However, even with the recent Modiphius sale it didn't seem worth it.

    Great review! I think you nailed the challenges in design strategy for IP, particularly video games. It’s going to be business decision around audience: are you creating a cardboard emulation of the game and focus on existing fan base that is looking for new ways to experience the world they enjoy. Or do you lean into more abstract mechanics chasing the broader board game market at the risk of alienating the existing fan base and potentially not get the traction because it is an IP based product. My impression listening to your criticism (yes, was driving) is the publisher may have been under pressure to deliver against a deadline of an expiring license. I have to believe licensing was not cheap. The graphics issues sounds like not enough time in the proofing of the pre-runs. Also the last thing that usually gets done is polishing the rulebook because it doesn’t require a lot of manufacturing prep like laying out cardboard punch, molds, etc. Just sounds like it was rushed at the end.

      Microsoft acquired Bethesda parent company in March 2021. Gamefound campaign closed 11/2/2021. It takes several months to put together a crowdfunding campaign, fulfillment, etc. I am *speculating* that the acquisition might have driven the timing resulting in an unpolished final product. Your observation that publisher seems to have washed their hands probably is the case because they no longer hold the license. Totally guessing here.

    I think you made a mistake at 41:24 where you apply 2x Heavy Damage to the Enemy... As its 2Heavy / Light I think the rules state that if there is a damage type that matches the armour type of the enemy (ie Light) then you apply that . in which case you are applying 2 Light Damage to the Bear which has 4 Light Defense therefore only doing 1xLight Damage (always at least one damage)
    Thats how I read the rules anyway..... Nice review though and I agree - its got its -ves but to me the +ves outweigh those ....

    I think you hit the nail on the head with the gripes about this game. I got it (didn't pay that much for it though!), played it, and then sold it. Ultimately, I think the game's main failure is in its campaign centered gameplay. It wants you to play and explore but not deviate too far from the campaign. In fact, it punishes if you do so. Is this not anathema to Elder Scrolls as a game to get lost in the vastness of the world? Total misuse of the IP in my opinion.
    Also, my thoughts on the enemy tokens: they were purposefully made bad to drive buyers towards buying the plastic minis. Which are completely unnecessary - this is not a tactics game.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive 5 месяцев назад

      That's interesting, because I think the game encourages the players to deviate by allowing the players to make choices about the threat. It's one of the positives I mention, and one of my favorite things about the game. I think it handles the campaign system and the open world questing just as good as the video game, and better than most board games that claim to do the same. Because, as I said, the more quests the players pick up, the more time they have to do them. It actively pushes the players to engage with the game, where as most games with timers and threat push the players to not engage. As a matter of fact, the only board game I know of that does it better is Lands of Galzyr.

    • @AIDS_sandwich
      @AIDS_sandwich 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheDungeonDive Hm... I have to admit I disagree. The threat system acted like an aggressive timer, like a Pandemic-style mechanic of: do this or else. I played it coop with my wife and we had fun. But we often spent most of the game trying to triage the event deck as it came up and forced us to coordinate how we would respond rather than do our own thing. The campaign was also quite lackluster too, which was another negative for me. Granted, I never played the "free roam" variant because it seemed like just that, a rules "variant". Something tacked on to appease the player base. Where as it should have been the main style of play to begin with. In my opinion the game should have been - a free roam game where the campaign sort of introduces itself overtime and the players, only reluctantly, engages with it. That is my experience with what Elder Scrolls is as a video game franchise.
      I agree with your assessment of skills and combat. I thought this was done well with the dice and making the RPG element of the game feel robust. I even liked the dungeon system using cards, though the rules are pretty shoddy explaining how they work. But then you would engage with the story/quest cards where you would have to test a skill you don't have any points in and lose out on experiencing large chunks of the game when you dead end on a skill roll failure, and frequently. What is the point of that? :(

    Don't you think you're coming across as a bit passive-aggressive in that intro? This may be blunt to say, but if bothers you that viewers aren't watching past the first five minutes of your videos, that's your fault. The onus is on you as the creator to make better content to encourage that. You often display a level of dissonance whenever you mention your analytics in your videos. On one hand, you recognize that your content exists as a niche subject within a niche hobby space. However, what's worrisome is that you also express disappointment more often than not that your content isn't more successful, and oftentimes it comes across as you passive-aggressively implying that the reason for the low views is because your viewers simply aren't appreciating your content enough. If you go back and listen to those segments in some of your recent videos, I think you'll understand where I'm coming from with this.

    Modiphius is a lost cause to me. I backed this kickstarter and trudged through the rules...very disappointing and very pricey for cheap tokens and only fair miniatures. Just like GW but without the good miniatures, even worse really based on rulesets and component quality. Now they have used the Cohors Cthulhu rpg to go woke as well. I was really looking forward to the skirmish game for this rpg, and I will still play Skyrim V when there aren't other things to do, but there are just better companies to give your money to than Modiphius.
