Closethegame Sugar, co-owned by trainer Adam Rice and Met's reliever Edwin "Sugar" Diaz, ran his record to 5 for 8 by mastering a deep field in Churchill Downs' $250,000 Kelly's Landing at 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track under Irad Ortiz. Closethegame Sugar also has two seconds and a fourth while racing on dirt, grass and synthetic. We speak with Rice afterward the well-populated winner's circle was sort of a Rice-Ortiz family reunion. Taylor Ortiz is Adam's sister and married to Jose Ortiz, Irad's brother.
