For me at least, the most bitter nostalgia is the vague sense that you are actually unable to create new experiences and memories like the old ones, ever again. In becoming old, wisened, and scarred, you realize that naivete was a blessing you can't replace, like losing a loved one... your own innocent self. It's not so much that I miss those times, it's that I miss being that me. But he's dead.
The reason people want to go back is simple. The modern adult life sucks. No one wants to spend their entire lives working and being stressed or exhausted all the time. Squidward said it perfectly, "We work for 49 years and then we die." We simply don't get the free time to do what we want anymore. You can't stay up until 3 am on a school night playing games anymore. You gotta get up at 6 am to get ready for your 9-5. Modern life is a dystopia and the people are way too complacent just wasting their one shot at life making the rich just that much richer.
Whatever happened to your Madoka video with the Thug Necessities gag? 😭 Solid video. I love the 2000s. I know the era probably wasn't special in some objective capacity, but I am perfectly content fondly recalling the gems of those times.
In Wales we have a word, 'hiraeth', which has no direct english translation and mostly relates specifically to Welsh culture... but it's a kind of longing, yearning, desire to return to a bygone time, even one that you have no direct experience of. It's a wistfulness nostalgia for something you can't remember. I think the internet enables a sort of 'digital hireath', by archiving so many things. You can go back and see, really see, what people where doing a decade ago. There's no need to remember it's all still there. And if you never experienced it yourself but you look back and it looks like it was a lot of fun. That's hireath, imho.
That's an interesting way to put it. I believe there's a convergence of reasons, ranging from public mental health spiraling to the digital retreat so many have, including to videos of an almost tangible world of old. With people wanting hope and perhaps even desperately needing it, the closest some get is a slightly older time that feels better. The world's, all things considered, moving positively. I really like Steven Pinker's The Better Angels of Our Nature's commentary on increasing quality of life. It isn't a positive trend like that for everyone, though we should relish in an immediate future treating us better. Strength and appreciation for today and tomorrow will pay dividends for almost anybody.
This is one of those fascinating topics to think about, along with "nostalgia for time before I was born" which has been frequently seen in "city pop" fans and general 80s nostalgia from generations born after the 80s. Although one has to be careful not to fall into the trap of going through nostalgia trips all the time.
ever thought about that even this video can trigger the same event ? i first watched this while i was farming for some meaningless item in elden ring which now floods me with some kind of momentary bliss because this video made me think quite a bit about life.

As someone who probably had the worst life in this comment section, so i don't really see my past as nostalgic, the only one of these memes i like is the 1994 one. It's an actual better time, even if i didn't live it, not even close. The 2000s and the 10s were actually a pretty braindead time to be a kid and teenager in. It's literally all mediocre to bad videogames and horrible music. Make the now your golden era, the past is worse than what you wanna make it. Life is not worth living if you are going to spend it in the past.
I believe people should always try to find treasure in their life, past, future, and now. Very awesome you came out the other side of a difficult journey. And I wish you a great path forward.
at first i liked griffith and it changed to guts but now it's slowly falling towards griffith again, funny how many times i think about it how indepth berserk actually is. and and for me the year 2000 was the golden year born in 90s but everything was secondhanded towards us from 80s cus we were financially not rich or poor. all i can say is, we fought the wrong war, they were preventing this from happening ages ago, burning the books that teach kids now about degenerate acts.. it's just saddening even trying to make others realize without being seen as a crazy person. anyway thanks for uploading sudo, sorry for the schizo posting i've been trying to change as a person by posting cat memes as the world falls apart Rawr x3
I hope you're doing well. It seems like you're trying RUclips again, that makes me happy to see. Do what you love, love what you do. Your content is great, always has been.
I will say, it's easier to enjoy things when you've solved for X (finances). There's more letters in the alphabet, of course, but solving X solves a lot of problems, including stress. So, I think most people just don't want to do the rat race, especially with inflation basically doubling to cost of living every couple years. I go to the grocery store, and it just feels like a constant reminder that one day, those shelves will all be empty. Something is coming. Cherish what little peace time we have left. One day, you might be fighting for real, not with a controller, and not for ranks. You'll be fighting to survive.
I really never experienced a "golden age". Just kinda went through life overcoming shit like everyone else. This is why these videos feel so foreign to me. What did the people that enjoy these videos have that I didn't? There's no single era I'd go back to really. I was happier in some years than in others but there's suffering I'd really wouldn't like to live through again, even if I was given the oportunity to go back to enjoy, i dunno, fucking High School Musical back in 2006. The hardships I went through back then are something I'd really wouldn't like to revisit. These types of videos make me feel very kinda miserable then. Like I missed something. It's not all bad tho. I should focus on trying to make the present my golden age. Even tho it's hard. sorry for weird comment lmao
The good feeling that at least i have personally from these vids is a sense of escapism. I dont think you missed anything because for me 2006-2010 also had a lot of downs yet i still enjoy these videos.
The fact that ten years from now, people might be looking back and saying, "Man I wish it was still 2023! All we had to worry about was plagues, global war, and a collapsing financial system!"... fills me with existential dread
Hey SudoSteff I love your videos and content! I did have a quick question if it wasn't a trouble or to much of your time, were did you learn your video editing skills? And what software do you use ?
Bro wake up, sudo made a video.

Aren't many 40yos adults nostalgic for their 30s, though?
Content like this is why I love this channel. It's everything
I missed when CSGO was able to run on a Macbook in 2014-2016,
I could listen to this man talk about anything, I have such a crush :,)

concise well articulated and it directly attacks the point. 10/10
One of my favorite words is "anemoia" meaning nostalgia for a time you never experienced.

This wasn't a youtube video we deserved, but one we needed.

I really respect your comment, although there were really good things in the past but going back wouldn't be as great everyone imagined

I did have a quick question if it wasn't a trouble or to much of your time, were did you learn your video editing skills? And what software do you use ?
