  • The XL models have an annoying habit of the Clutch Ramp Bearing, or Clutch Throwout Bearing, disintegrating inside of the primary! Here is how you preempt the issue by replacing the OEM bearing from HD. Not the only way to skin this cat, and there are probably steps I missed but it works.

    Well done. Just had my 3rd replacement done on my 2000 883. Had no idea where it was or anything. Thanks! FYI for all the fellow Sportster riders: When you engage the clutch and you start hearing some high pitched "whoop whoop" sounds, that's your clue it's going out! Get it fixed before you get stuck like I did.

      I am very glad it helped you out! The first time mine went out I searched high and low for info on it and found squat! Figured it out by taking my whole clutch apart. Hopefully it never happens again on your ride, but it is designed kinda portly and wears down no matter how gentle you are with the clutch. So I just ride my clutch hard and inspect whenever I do the adjustment and swap it out if there is ever too much play for my liking since it’s an inexpensive bearing.

I figured there had to be a way to do it I just don't know my way around inside the cases that well. If you keep having to replace the 8885 bearing try a 7200B bearing like he links to in the description. It's an angular contact bearing meaning it's designed to handle side loads unlike the stock one HD calls for.

      Imad - I know your post was a while ago, but did changing the bearing fix the noise you were hearing? What kind of noise was it, and did you hear it in all gears or just when pulling in and releasing clutch in 1st? I have a 05 1200 Roadster and about a month ago I replaced the primary/transmission fluid and put a new Barnett clutch cable in. Ever since then I’ve been getting this loud clanking noise when I’m first gear and feathering the clutch… like when slow speed maneuvering and moving in and out the friction zone in 1st gear. I think I actually mostly hear it as I’m releasing the clutch lever, just as it gets out of the friction zone and engages the clutch there is a very loud clank. Is that what you are talking about, or something different? I can sometimes pull the shift lever back into the friction zone and then release it multiple times in a row and hear the noise each time I release the lever. I have read on forums people describing the same loud clunking noise, and responses say that is completely normal, but I never noticed it until changing the clutch cable. I’ve tried re-checked my clutch adjustment like 5 times to make sure I didn’t screw up an get way off the 1/4 turn spec. Just wondering if you were seeing the same thing with your bike!

    I fought with the snap ring on mine today for about 20 minutes before I just gave up. Was hoping to replace the OEM bearing with a (unfortunately named) F.A.G. 7200-B. I'll try to get a different set of spring clip pliers at some point and try again. But I suppose it's better that I didn't do that alone with the clutch pack replacement (Barnett Extra Plate, carbon fiber since the place I bought from ran out of the kevlar), as this way it will be easier to diagnose any problems with fewer changes.

    Happy New Year and thank you for posting this useful video!!! I have a 2020 Sportster Roadster 1200 that has developed the exact symptoms that you describe. This bike has only 12,000 miles on it at the moment but it has been mostly ridden in city traffic over its life, so the clutch has been heavily used. I have the factory service manual and tried adjusting my clutch many times without success. I also changed my clutch cable. I drained the primary oil to look for any broken rivets from the so-called grenade plate and any other objects but the oil was very clean. I removed the ball and ramp assembly and opened it up to inspect it closely. All looked well in there. I also inspected the throwout bearing while the ramp was off. It has a small amount of play in it as you show in the video (but definitely less than yours) and it looked structurally intact. I can rotate the adjustment screw freely without it binding. Finally, I have also noticed that my clutch lever freeplay varies a lot as I ride the bike. I am pretty sure I am setting the lever slack to the factory spec when the clutch adjustment is done cold. But the lever slack appears to increase significantly and then decrease again all on its own as I ride the bike. Have you noticed this large variation in your lever freeplay when you were experiencing your issues? I am thinking about replacing the throwout bearing next anyway, as I do not have any other ideas. Do you have any other suggestions about things for me to check? Thank you.

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  9 месяцев назад

      I cant say that I ever have a variation in my clutch play once i have it adjusted. I don't beleive that should change at all no matter the temp of the bike. I would recommend checking multiple sources on how to adjust the clutch adjustment screw, because you might be leaving it a bit too loose for your bike. Mind you this is from memory, seat the screw, then one quarter turn out. But I also think that you may not find any excess metal or shavings in your primary if your rivited clutch plate is failing, but the symptoms will get worse as the bike gets hotter. So the slipping and not feeling like your disengaging the clutch will be worse when the bike is hot compared to when it is first started and you take off. Mine grenaded at 15K but I was feeling the symptoms for about 500 miles before that.

    • @aliuzun1129
      @aliuzun1129 9 месяцев назад

      @@LoneWolferGarage I appreciate this information! I am starting to think my spring plate has started grenading since the symptoms get worse as the bike heats up. I think my next step is to take the clutch apart and inspect it. Thanks again!

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  9 месяцев назад

      @@aliuzun1129 Dang that sucks, but it is expected. I recommend the Barnett Extra plate kevlar kit. The job is not that hard if you can track down the spring plate decompression tool. They have them on amazon, but I haven't had to search for something like that for a long time. But if the dealer is the direction you prefer to go, just make sure not to go with OEM as its not worth it.

    • @aliuzun1129
      @aliuzun1129 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, there is no way I will go with the original factory clutch again. I decided to have the dealer complete the rest of the repair as that is the most convenient option for me at this time, and I also told them to put in the Screaming Eagle Performance Clutch Kit (Part no. 38002-04) in there. People on the forums seem generally happy with this kit since it does not have that riveted spring plate in it.

    Great video man…I just replaced the bearing and clutch plates in my son’s ‘99 Sportster 1200. The bearing was completely destroyed and came out in several pieces, is there any concern that bearing particles get into the clutch basket? In other words…is it necessary to replace the clutch if that bearing gets completely destroyed? Thanks again.

      @LoneWolferGarage  21 день назад

      Glad you found it and hope you and your son are getting some quality riding in. As for if it can damage the clutch plates or clutch baskit, your guess is as good as mine. I have been lucky and never had any damage to the plates or basket and I've been able to fish all the pieces out easily, just make sure you know how many ball bearings are in the bearing so you have the same count after removal. Small particles though probably don't matter as it gets mixed in with the fluid, and hopefully picked up but the magnet on the drain plug.

    Thanks Lone Wolf Have you ever done the compensator /primary getting alot of noise having your symptoms definitely going after that bearing, can I go just sprocket teeth #

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  3 года назад

      Sportsters don't have a compensator like the twincams/bigtwins, its really just a front primary sprocket. I've nver dealth with that making noise as it again isn't a compensator. What make snoise is the chain. You may think you have your chain adjusted correctly, but that is more often than not the cause of a noisy primary. Or you just have a noisy bike, I've heard Sporty's that made a god awful lot of noise and were adjusted perfectly and ripped on the road. If The Clutch Ramp Bearing is going, it can cause the primary chain to get a bit of slack as the sprocket and the clutch hub spin, causing that chain to wack against the inside of the case, usually right above the inspection cover. But that isn't a symptom I encountered. That symptom happens when I am lazy in adjusting the primary chain and only check 1 or two spots rather than a dozen.

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  4 года назад +2

      Rob Gifford That is a good concern. If the bearing has completely failed you will need to count the bearing to make sure you have gotten them all out. Hopefully you get to it before complete failure and just have a bearing that won’t hold a load. If the bearing has failed completely and can’t find all the bearings you will need to take the primary cover off and hunt down any lose pieces of the bearing. I have been lucky and only had the bearing fail completely the first time. And the pieces all stayed in the middle of the clutch pack and a solid magnet was all I needed to get the right count of ball bearings. I then did a flush of the primary to get any little bits of metal to accumulate in the bottom the primary on the magnet on the drain plug. Hopefully it’s doesn’t come down to that for you and the symptoms are caught before failure of the throw out bearing.

      Having a dealer look into it will be pricey, even just to diagnose the issue. I can’t say for certain if it’s the clutch ramp bearing, it would need to be inspected which requires it to come out. I personally think this is a job anyone can do as long as they go slow, step by step and don’t lose the snap ring. As for an unbearable screaming sound, if it’s from the primary it can be a few things. It can be the clutch ramp bearing, it can be the clutch adjustment screw seated too heavily, it can be the chain, it can be the riveted plate in the clutch pack (aka the grenade plate), could be the compensator or it could be a transmission issue. It’s difficult to diagnose off of just a description. I know that sucks as an answer but if you keep ticking items off the list, the answer will present itself.

If you are willing to try it out, take pictures or record how you do it and share so that there are more videos out there with bigger ranges in years to help people out with this problem. Good luck!

      Brian Vieyra I did not experience a noise really at all when this happened that I can remember. It was more the physical issues of not being able to get the clutch to disengage, creeping when the clutch lever was pulled all the way in, unable to adjust clutch at all. But it is a simple thing to check off the list by inspecting it. You only need to take off the derby cover, and collapse the clutch cable like you would for a clutch adjustment.

    hey man hope you reply, but how long can you ride on bad bearing and does it do damage if i ride it till the end?

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  4 года назад

      Slim Jim I can’t give you an amount of time that you can ride with a bad one in there. It could be bad but not failing and you could get miles out of it but if you are having problems adjusting the clutch, getting into first, tons of creeping forward it might just be a good idea to swap it out. It’s not an expensive part and it doesn’t take much time to just avoid the problem as I did with this video. I was at the point where I thought it might be on its way out and just swapped it. As for damage, if a bearing somehow gets lost in the primary it can get through to the transmission which has a bunch more moving parts that it can cause havoc on. But I have been lucky even when it fails all the pieces got trapped in the center cavity of the clutch basket.

      i can get into first easily it just makes a really hard clunk. if anything its hard to find neutral along with when i pull in the clutch it makes a squeel then makes like a loose chain noise but i checked the chain and if anything it might be a little tight but im going into harley to get a lookover on friday. but from you're experience does this sound like a throwout or a basket problem? thanks for the reply boss youre awesome

    • @LoneWolferGarage
      @LoneWolferGarage  4 года назад

      The clunk is pretty normal for a Harley. And the squeal and chain noise makes me think that the chain needs to be adjusted. The chain needs to be advanced multiple times to adjust it properly. That is something I haven’t made a tutorial on as there are hundreds of those. As far as there being an issue with your clutch basket, the most frequent one I see and have experienced is the clutch plates them selves being an issue. Sportsters have a center clutch plate that is riveted together and the rivets fail. Mine failed at about 15,000 miles. When at operating speeds the clutch would slip and slip and slip. Have you done a clutch adjustment recently?

      @@LoneWolferGarage i have not man i just bought this as a project bike, getting a new bearing and will be doing a clutch adjustment to see how it goes. the guy at the dealership said it could be like a clutch shift plate or something like that? not to sure but he said its a somewhat easy fix, so sometimes i can't find neutral is really the problem i found with a loud gear shifting noise but thats somewhat normal aswell. keep in mind this bike has most likely been dropped since the forks were replaced and clutch lever snapped. most likely fell on chaincase side

      I have not dealt with that on my Sporty. First thing I would look at would be adjusting the clutch. That doesn't cost anything except some of your time. Try a few different tweaks to the adjustment. That was not a symptom I encountered with the Clutch Ramp Bearing failing, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be a symptom. I would inspect the bearing just for peace of mind. There could also be something going on with your Shifter Assembly. I have never had an issue with my Shifter Assembly, so I don't have much first hand knowledge of what might go wrong with it. But that would be the next part I would look at if I were having shifter issues as it is the next easiest thing to look at since you can remove the primary cover and inspect it. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

If you are still having issues after replacing that, then there could be more going on inside the clutch pack, specifically the Clutch Spring Plate or “grenade plate” could have given up the ghost.
