I had a pair of the original Lightspeed ANR headsets and recently upgraded to the Zulu 3. They are solidly built, with excellent noise reduction and are amazingly comfortable, without any head pressure. A pleasure to use!
I'm a PPL and the only instrument flying I've done was executing some 180's and maintaining some headings. Watching you attempt to intercept a glidepath in real IMC was terrifying. As you said near the end: "this is not fun flying, this is work". I'll do my instrument rating one day, but I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable...
Beyond excellent video with a lot more learning points than you take credit for. Hand flying a light aircraft in full IMC following IFR in controlled airspace AND live narration. Biggest takeaways for me; Pre-flight actions to reduce task loading in the air. Clear crew management and communication in-flight. Great example of how quickly spatial disorientation kicks in when manoeuvring through IMC. How hearing and short term memory are the first casualties as you approach task saturation. Well done guys.
I have both the Zulu 3's and the Bose A20s and I'd agree, they are very comparable. I like that you pointed out the cords at the beginning because that is one thing I definitely like about the lightspeed over the Bose. Comfort wise I don't really notice any difference between the two. I did notice that the side tone volume on the Bose is a little quieter than the lightspeed. But overall I don't think you can go wrong with either set.
Fantastic video, I’m just starting my instrument training and seeing you go through the paces and explain things so thoroughly is a tremendous help. Thank you!
Love videos like this. I passed my instrument exam and my first instrument flight was yesterday, I felt very behind the airplane. Videos like this help very much
Enjoying the videos, a lot.! Good metal exercise for me also. I’ve used Zulu headsets for years and am a real fan of the sound and quality they produce.
I just finished an IPC yesterday. With the light turbulence, holding altitude was a struggle. I went 7.5 degrees nose down and still was a climbing 400 fpm. Went 10 degrees nose up, full power and had a 600 fpm decent. All in all I should have filed block altitude, lol! Kept the needles centered and rode the Glideslope damn near perfect. Arms are now tired and sore.
Hey brother! I heard you over the radio today in Tallahassee and said hello. Back story is I was about to do my first solo when that happened. It was a friendly voice to hear on stressful day. Big fan of your work. I’d love to connect. Also, great headset 😂 it’s what I use
I’ve flown with both. Literally the only difference I’ve noticed is the material of the cord and the price. In-flight performance to me was nearly identical. For the money, I’m a Lightspeed Zulu3 guy all the way.
Lewis, another great video. I have the same setup on an iPad with foreflight and sentry. I never really use my Ipen other than copying clearances, but your technique to put your climb out on the plate and to copy the full ATIS on scratchpad is what I’ll be using in the future. Working on instrument rating and still learning tips and techniques on foreflight. Nice instrument flying from the right seat.
Just a suggestion...try keeping an eye on your turn coordinator as much as the attitude indicator... it really helps me keep things smoother! Let us know what you think... Steve
Good fun and good CRM; you love to see it. Just finished my first (B)FR and your content really helped me prepare for that and re-familiarize myself with all the regs and some of the skills. Cheers!
I have AKG AV100's and no one has ever heard of them. Besides ANR and bluetooth, they have built in map lights. Chew on that Lightspeed and Bose. However, I would love to try out the Lightspeeds. Great video! I am just getting started with my IFR so this and your other video are very beneficial.
I am enjoying the Lightspeed DZ and really appreciate it's extra functionality/safety. That said, this video only confirms what I have been experiencing - the mic quality overall seems lesser than DCs or Bose. Ottos voice here is so clear, whereas in contrast yours seems quite muffled, which has been my experience as well. That is my only gripe however - great headset overall.
I have a Lightspeed Zulu 3 headset and I like it a lot. I've never tried the Bose headset so I don't have a basis for comparison. My primary reasons for picking the LS over the Bose was the price, the fact that it contains more metal in its construction, and the design of the cables. I will likely pick up a Delta Zulu headset before long to have the built-in CO detector and rechargeable battery pack that I can plug into my plane's USB port to charge/power it while flying. It also has the ability to tune the audio eq for your particular hearing capability using the app which I've heard works rather well.
I have used two sets of Lightspeed headsets. The Zulu 2 and the Zulu 3 that I currently own. I love them! I do wish I had held off getting the Zulu 3 last fall because Delta Zulu had been released right after that. But I am very happy with Lightspeed.
I’m not surprised you like the Lightspeed. They fit comfortably on large heads with inflated egos. Perfect for someone like yourself 😉 We love you here Nick!
Only complaint is my Lightspeeds are not as sensitive as my A20 and the clamping is a little stronger, I prefer the Bose but there is not a wrong choice, just preference.
I've been a Lightspeed Zulu guy since the 1st model. I've thought about switching to Bose until I actually had a pair in my hands and got to really look them over. No thanks, I'll stick with the Zulus. The quality of the lightspeed is so much better. IMO
II have had the Delta Zulu's for a little over 2 months. So far I really like them, but this is my first headset that has noise cancelling. Having said that I have nothing to compare it to. Overall I really like them. I don't use the carbon monoxide app. I tried it out the very first time and that was about it.
I've got a good bit of time in N670MA.....when it was elsewhere...and not that one that crashed in Alaska either.🤣 Love my lightspeeds, good for big heads..🤣🤣
I still rock my D.C. H10-30s with the two place intercom. With their adaptor, my Walkman plugs directly into it not to mention it has a 9v battery back-up in case I lose all power on the trusty 152. Word of advice, go with Duracell. They only leak out over 5 years or so
i love my lightspeed, but i hate that i cannot hear my cell phone on a call during the call through my headset, while in a plane. another great video.. almost had a phone number to write down!.. good save otto.
the headset seems so much bulkier than the bose edit... and doing that on small steam gauges, with no AP, and from the right seat is f-ing challenging!
I am using the light speed sierra set for my private training, really pleased with their quality to pricing ratio. I am curious of the deltas over the a20, I’ll be in the market for a new set once I get my PPL, thanks for the review!
I was hoping for a Lou Bega reference (MAMBO). 2:47 "the moron in the left seat" (here I thought you were going to fly left seat) 20:10 aw, I really wanted to see the sexting. 25:00 I never mess up a radio call. Never ever. I can't imagine. 33:10 "um, some help here?"
Great video! One wish though. Is it possible to get a more direct view of the instruments? Rather than at an angle. Probably not unless your camera is on your forehead. :-) Keep up the good work, Lewis! Enjoy your style of mixing fun with business.
I hear it too but it goes away when I switch to Lightspeed App audio. We had trouble with the audio panel on this flight which I believe is causing the problem.
Can you explain me a little how did you file this flight plan, I’m curious just because ATC already knew how many approaches yow wanted to do and because at the beginning he was asking you what you wanted to do when you requested the hold….. thanks nice content
Thanks! It’s simple. When I file a flight plan for practice purposes, in the remarks section of the flight plan I write what approaches I want to do. In Orlando they actually request that you do that for efficiency.
You missed an important note when I put up the plate for reference. On screen I put text that says “not accurate” & “only using it to show proximity to MAMBO”. It’s a VOR hold that I was doing which requires 1 minute legs.
It’s a VOR radial hood so 1 min legs. The pictured chart in the video was from an approach chart where it’s the MAP hold fix. I was just doing the VOR hold.
People don’t realize it can be difficult to keep your currency down here in Florida especially in the summer. Unless you want to be shooting approaches in thunderstorms lol
It’s actually in the correct position. From the POH in the securing aircraft section: “Fuel selector valve - LEFT OR RIGHT to prevent cross feeding”. Whoever flew this plane last did the right thing and followed their checklist. Nice try but study up 😉
The new headset clicks every time you talk. It's not very loud but still quite annoying since it happens every single time, I'm hoping you switch back to the bose for future videos
I believe that’s the audio panel, not the headset. We were having trouble with the panel on this day. I have another video where it doesn’t make the same sound so you shouldn’t be inconvenienced while watching.
@@LewDixAviation Ah cool, since I couldn't hear it on Otto's side I assumed it was the different headset but this makes more sense, I didn't think about the fact that the panel is responsible for cutting the mic in and out. Looking forward to the next video, this one was a banger and a change from the usual clear skies
You can’t hear / feel / see carbon monoxide 🤣😂 nope it’s a Gas Lewis lol no different to every other Gas. Your chemistry teacher just went full forest Whittaker eye at that comment ;) I assume you were meant to say You can’t smell /taste / sense
Lewis, please do more IFR videos like this. I learned more from this 35 minute video than almost any other IFR video out there.
That’s amazing to hear! I’ll certainly try to get up in as much IMC as I can!
@@LewDixAviationI second this Even just showing your view of flying in the system helps a lot
Agreed I am currently in instrument training so it helps greatly to see it in real stuff
This is my favorite video also,
Agreed!

When you do the ILS back in always request a circle to land other runway or at least a circuit in the patter. Makes a good logbook entry.

Hopefully not just me, but definitely hearing a tone/feedback that I’ve not heard before this video - 0MA / Headset / Cable or a combination 🤔
I hear it too but it goes away when I switch to Lightspeed App audio. We had trouble with the audio panel on this flight which I believe is causing the problem.
Makes sense, the app definitely cleared the issue - nothing on Otto's audio throughout.
Class work as ever though 😀 smashing it

I’m the market for a new headset, how is the battery life? Always like the laughing between you and Otto…. Another great video!
Battery life has been really good. I’ve used it for about 5 hours total and the app still shows 100% charge.
Might be a purist but I just cant entertain owt but the a20s. Gold standard for me!

Why starting the timer when the hold is depicted to be done by 4nm each leg?
You missed an important note when I put up the plate for reference. On screen I put text that says “not accurate” & “only using it to show proximity to MAMBO”. It’s a VOR hold that I was doing which requires 1 minute legs.
As an airline pilot are you allowed to use these in your regional since they are not TSO approved?
I am curious about your procedure for flying the holding pattern at MAMBA. It is published as 4NM legs instead of 1min legs.
It’s a VOR radial hood so 1 min legs. The pictured chart in the video was from an approach chart where it’s the MAP hold fix. I was just doing the VOR hold.

Are these conditions more disorienting in the Cessna than the ATR?
100%. I’ve never felt spatial disorientation in the ATR.
This is legit.
