Surfing means everything to teenage penguin Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf). Followed by a documentary film crew, he leaves his home in Antarctica for Pen Gu Island, site of the the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Cody wants to be respected and admired, and he believes that winning the competition will bring him what he craves. However, an encounter with washed-up surfer Geek (Jeff Bridges) teaches Cody about what is truly important.

as amusing as anthopromorthic characters are . . . I do prefer my characters being more animalistic
so something like you would see in xenofiction . . or . . having it more abstract like from some forms of science fiction
FINALLY! SOMEONE IS REACTING TO THIS GEM! This movie was absolutely slept on. The animation of Cody and Z surfing in the lagoon was so fantastic when it was released and still holds up today.

Watched this when I was in Florida for vacation, and this movie just was that sweet treat for a already great trip. Now this movie holds alot of my nostalgia from then, It's a masterpiece
For anyone who doesn't know, the scene where Z is telling Cody about being in the tube, the voices during the penguins surfing are testimonials from actual surfers

I watched the movie for the first time in english yesterday and I immidiatly called it.
The mockumentary genre really makes this movie funny. Especially the scene with the urchin.

Urchin scene is one of my all time favorites actoss any movie "stepped on me? Stepped on me?!?! He was dancing on me" kills me EVERY SINGLE TIME

I love how this movie teaches u to not see life as thi big competition, Big Z wanted Cody to have fun and enjoy surfing instead of focusing so much on winning it, thats why joe was so good in the competition, he was just having fun and not caring about it

It’s really about happiness the key to life and the meaning to it is simply just being happy
It’s like all of Cody’s character development went from acting like Tank to acting like Joe.

Nowadays this movie just looks like your standard Pixar or Dreamworks animation, but you have no idea how mind-blowing the animation was in 2007. I watched Surf's Up on theathers, and as soon as the Bluray was available I went out to purchase it, because it was just such an unbelievable thing to look at
Not even today you see such a faithful representation of the appearance and physics of water.

Lol idk what you mean by standard. Pixar, 3D Disney, Sony animation, Dreamworks, blue sky…they always did pretty good with their 3D animation. You’re acting like this movie is somehow better than the typical animation from that time
@@ma.2089 Other major 2007 animated releases were Bee Movie, Shrek the Third, Meet the Robinsons, TMNT, and Ratatouille (probably being the best out of all of them), but what I mean is that Sony Animation didn't even need to flex this hard, and they flexed big time
@@nielcosme Have you ever watched Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga'Hoole? If not, it's a very beautifully animated film from 2010 that has scenes with realistic water and fire that you might appreciate.
This film is the typical "Winning is not everything" mixed with a "Don't meet your heroes" story. We've seen that a lot. Hell, we had Cars a year before this came out. It's the mockumentary style that elevates it from cliché to unique underrated gem. To my knowledge, never has a film been animated like this before or since. Even the godawful sequel (avoid it at all cost) completely ditched the mockumentary style. They stripped away what made the film charming and special.
I don’t really remember it for it’s story tho. It’s the humor and characters that stick out. Cars, to me, sticks out for its theme and climax mostly. Can’t say the characters are super special to me. But it’s the complete opposite here.

Shia Lebouf did a movie marathon where he reacted to every movie he’s been in. He really loved watching this one whereas he snoozed through transformers lol

The mockumentery format and shaky cam really makes this one of the most unique and greatest animated films of all time. Especially compared to Sony's other early work.
And unlike Frozen, it doesn't constantly shove the unique stuff down your throat. Frozen isn't even that unique anyway; it just claims again and again that it is!
Chicken Joe is voiced by none other than John Heder, aka Napoleon Dynamite. Guys known for playing mellow characters.

Love this movie as a kid, my first exposure to mockumentary movies. A lot of fun memories with this movie, awesome reaction, dude!
I remember my great uncle once show this movie to me and my little brother because of how we both love Pingu and i impress of how you can make animation out of any theme, even a mock documentary....

It is indeed very underrated. It's not even in the top-grossing-films list!
This film is a staple for my family. Seeing the ending tag for the trailer "a true story" I knew I was going to like the humor in this story. It is funny, but the original score is also very effective, and there are some genuinely great dramatic moments. The part where Cody catches the first wave in the competition and comes out of the foam is still a stand out!
I wish there would be another animated movie in this documentary/interview (mockumentary) style because there are a lot of opportunity to dive into it like how Surf's Up did it.
I need more like this. Also, Chicken Joe is best dude!
I wish there were more animated documentary style film. To be fair, even they do made it, it always end up in history channal for documentary have to be realisic but actually it not sepose to... cartoon documentary can be amazing as this movie. You just need to know what story that the character want to tell and share about what been happening, explore the infomation, who need to interview and why this story deserve to be share to all people to see...your character can be anyone or anything. Just show to people what your cartoon movie what to tell and share
The Brazilian dub of this movie is a MASTERPIECE I'm from Brazil and this movie in brazilian was incridble

I completely forgot about this movie! Those kid penguins are so cute. I think I was in the third grade when this came out, so of course my friends and I loved the part where one of them calls Tank a "Dirty trashcan full of poop"

One of my favorite memories associated with this movie was the time I and my childhood best friend went to a swimming event with either our church or our school. It went till late at night and when it got dark enough they projected this movie on a screen next to the pool so we could swim and watch at the same time. Definitely an awesome memory!

This movie deserves more credit than it gets, to me it's a hidden gem of my childhood and is a good movie in general
I think this movie was the second one I ever saw in theaters--fucking loved it. It's still hilarious to this damn day, especially now that I get the adult jokes.

Chicken joe does that well because he was just having fun and that’s just what bigz was training Cody to do
This movie is like the message it's just about having fun, Shia and Jeff were perfectly casted the water may not have been the most photo realistic but stylistically it's so inviting and just pretty something about anime/animation that's the most appealing is how bright and clean the skies are here at least where I live it's so faded and polluted
The early 2000s rock songs are so nostalgic they're timelessly of their time ^-x I kinda liked the dig at happy feet "any other talents? what like singing or dancing? nah man not me" it's tastefully done and not too edgy lol
I went to see this movie in theaters for a friends birthday and we went to a place called "Islands" for lunch after lmao, Chicken Joe was my favorite character and even though he's a penguin I always appreciated Big Z's character development :) Also the best soundtrack any 10 year old could ask for lol
I think the reason chicken joe did so good is because he was always so chill and relaxed
In Brazil this movie turned out a meme because of the dubbed version. The voice actors were really great at changing some jokes or names to make it comfortable and funny to Brazilians.

Surf's up was a laugh. I remember it was the ok version of Happy Feet, which is my all time favourite animated movie. If you haven't seen Happy Feet I highly recommend it! Although it could be tricky for RUclips since it is a musical 😅

A duo I never thought I needed until now
I used to love this movie so much every night for like a year I watched it as my nighttime movie because the water scenes made me fall asleep xD such a underrated classic
I also watched this in 2007 and completely forgot about it. I remember liking the documentary style. Its been done in other animated shows and shorts, but I don't think so in an animated movie. I have a theory that after the release of March of the Penguins, which is an actual documentary about penguins in Antarctica, the world went penguin crazy! There's this, Happy Feet and the Penguins from Madagascar. I mean I can't complain because I love penguins, but overall this movie is alright.

Such a good movie with such a good soundtrack
One thing that makes this movie amazing is that it didn't have a script. The directors told the voice actors what points they needed to hit during a given scene and let the actors improvise all of their dialogue.
this movie can be way funnier in the brazilian portuguese version, right from the start when glenn throws the snowball on him, Cody's say "Throw your mom to see if bounces", that movie has the best lines here xD
Definitely in my Top 5 movies, and I'm 41! There were some behind-the-scenes documentarys on the DVD, and that kind of wave animation, where you feel like you're "in" the wave, had never been done before

There is a part 2 of this movie and is a Wrestling surfing version like John Cena is in it from peacemaker
Of course Napoleon Dynamite is Chicken Joe, but Deidrich Bader (a.k.a. Batman, Rex Kwan Do) is also in this movie as Tank! If you're into superhero shows, do Batman: The Brave and the Bold or Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy where he plays Hoss Delgado!

I forgot Zooey Deschanel voiced the love interest in this movie. Honestly I was terrified of Surf's Up as a kid because of the one scene implying Cody crashing and dying from the rocks. For some reason it just SHOOK ME.
