I'm a dental assistant and I've never had to do this. Where I work we have a machine, we just add powder and water and place it in and it beats it for us. It's very useful.
But then again if you want more money. Just learn how to use a scanner, like itero or cerec then you wouldn't even need to make an alginate impression, just take a scan.
I wish I had that much working time with the alginate we use at my office! We use a fast set. I work in a pediatric dentist office, had to take an impression on a 3 year old one time. But its rare for us to take impressions.
Sharing my humble thoughts that powder should be added to water instead of adding water to the powder as it helps to wet the lower lying powder particles.
I used to work at a dental lab. We hate receiving alginate impressions from dentists. One, they need to be kept under water otherwise they’ll shrink as they dry and be useless. Yet we need to dry them before pouring because that little water ruins the texture of the stone and two, we can only get one pour out of them because by the time the stone is dry the alginate is completely dry and brittle too. It just crumbles in your hand when you take the model out. So we have to make sure to be extra careful when pouring but also fast cuz it dries fast. I always gave those to my coworker. She’s great at pouring and her models come out with little to no bubbles.
I love your video! I just started going to school to become a DA last month & although I really like my instructor I feel like she isn't all that great at explaining the little details so these tips are gonna help me tremendously, hopefully I'll get a chance to try them in lab this week
Nice video. Tho next time it'd be very helpful to your fans that are interested in obtaining optimum results when using alginate materials for impressing edentulous or semi-edentulous patients for accurate construction of complete dentures or partial dentures in removable prosthetics Over my 30 years and thousands of successful restorations it'd be to their best interest to consider this concept.. When inserting tray and alginate into the oral cavity; deliver tray and material anteriorly to posterior thus forcing any and all air distal and away fro trapping in the vault of the palate, which occurs more often when starting from the distal or posterior ending up trapping air lingually of the patients anteriors or in the vault of the palate.. Hoper this may help those that may have struggled with such issues. Sincerely; Denture Geek In Colorado
make sure they use good alginate and fill the trays with dense or base material and line the tray aftet first fitting with light material so u get a good fit.
Underdosing the water about 20% is the only trick that makes a real difference. I've found it in Hayakawa's book about complete dentures. I personally also like to slightly wet the surface of the alginate after loading the tray. Sometimes I also apply some alginate with a finger onto occlusal surfaces of molars, lingual surfaces of upper incisors and around severely malposed teeth.
Howard farran Dentaltown says that in Japan they use alginate for final impression of crowns. I want to see their technique so they can do this. Also, I have used a mixing machine alginator. Always get a better mix with a machine rather than hand. ( even if it is a professor !)
Tip that helped me for top first get molars and bring tray up so you can get anteriors and press on teeth get the lip and massage lips over the tray for bottom same thing works press down on molars and then push down on anteriors make patient put their tongue up and massage lip
"Lots of pressure on the back"??????? Why pressure? Just sit it well at the posterior first and then anterior. You never put 'lots of pressure'. That is going to ruin the impression resulting into exposing the tray through the alginate which is not good.
There are ratios for a reason. If you eyeball it adding too much water, the composition of the alginate can become too thin and flimsy in areas causing distortion and inaccuracies when the model is poured. It also messes with the expansion properties, making impressions less accurate. These companies write directions for a reason, but I'm sure they pale in comparison to all your years taking impressions.
No fluffing it??! I’ve always learned with powders like this, even with flour when baking, you fluff the powder by simply rolling the container around at an angle. This helps to get the accurate amount in the scoop for the perfect 1:1 or 1:2 ratio.
Absolutely incorrect. In fact, we measure the powder by weight to get the most exact ratio every time. If the ratio is off, the expansion will be off and your impression will be less accurate.
I agree, that is the first thing I noticed....second, there should be stability when the tray is in the mouth...only supporting the tray with fingers on the bottom of the tray can allow for movement of the tray if the patient moves or the assistant moves. We stand behind the patient with feet squarely on the ground and slightly spread, rest on the chair to minimize assistant movement, when tray is in place our palms rest gently (bilaterally) near the zygoma; if the patient moves, we MOVE with the patient minimizing tray movement. Remember not to place pressure on the tray, the fingers merely support it so that the tray does not move.
It has to do with the wetting properties of the powder. You should “sprinkle” the powder (over 3-5 seconds) into the water. If you “dump” the water into a bowl of powder, little clumps will form at the spots where the water first contacts powder and you will not get as “pure” of a mix. If you read the sides of the container or the instruction insert it states the same. It is like mixing acid and water: only one way works correctly
U explained everything clear...but I guess...everytime we are explained...its the water added firstly...and then powder for mixing...and u did the opposite...why?
So what happens to impressions after mouth gear is complete? Do you dispose of them or are they used for CSI? I had impressions done when I was a kid. I had to have a bottom retainer because I had one crooked tooth. Also, what do you do with teeth when they are pulled? All four of my wisdom teeth were pulled, again as a teenager. What do you do with them?
Although it may differ in different regions Alginate is discarded and as for extracted teeth they may be discarded or may be used for practicing RCTs after having them cleaned and sterilised
That was fantastic thank you. Not sure if some folks understand this is the negative impression only. What were they wanting to see at the end -- bust you with a bubble hole hiding somewhere, looking down inside? Hehe, and I'm sorry... I'm all about safety especially after having costly cataract surgery to see well, but it just looks hilarious to me watching protective eyewear be required for this procedure elsewhere. How exactly did someone somewhere slop alginate in a patient's eye during this process, and exactly how severe was the injury? Other processes ok. But an alginate negative? Yeah, shooting range goggles XD
Best invisible impression i have ever seen

Lol real dental assistants know how to mix. You make more money as a temporary dental assistant. Like 30k more lol I suggest you learn how to mix.
But then again if you want more money. Just learn how to use a scanner, like itero or cerec then you wouldn't even need to make an alginate impression, just take a scan.
@@undeadaeon9992 "real DA" work smarter not harder. Good for them on having such an advanced office
As a student I wish every lecturer would explain as clearly as you they just let us at the mercy of assistants whom waiting like hungry wolves
One important thing is before taking the impression try the tray to check if it fits to the patients mouth or not.
Yeah that's what my dentist did before doing the impressions
Exactly 💯

Use cold water for the mixing to increase the setting time
ruclips.net/video/B4c7UR8cjwI/видео.html
it was really good but it would have been better if you showed us the impression that you took
Same thoughts
ruclips.net/video/B4c7UR8cjwI/видео.html
True I want to see it too
Right, I thought it would be tight 😊
It probably didn’t turn out 😅
This didn't set as fast as the ones we worked with in class. I felt like I had to rush lol 😂
AprilSheree hahah true
It depends on the water. If it is hot or cold
same here lol
Me too
I was thinking the same😁 water temperature does help but I would have to hurry anyway because the one we were using was setting up fast
Sharing my humble thoughts that powder should be added to water instead of adding water to the powder as it helps to wet the lower lying powder particles.
Also make a wax ring on the inside and outside of the tray. it will make your impression better.
Thank you for making theses videos. They are extremely helpful for students !

Can't thank you enough for all these great videos that help with my dental hygiene program!
So happy you're here with us! Good luck with your program!
nice, I'm having trouble with the texture of it. I will try your method now.nice and simple.thanx

I believe its powder to liquid not liquid to powder. This will ensure you have all the powder mixed.
So you are telling me how to take an impression but not showing me the results??? LoL
she didn't get the mucobuccal
That’s what I wanted to see I guess it wasn’t good that’s why she didn’t show
That's good work Sister. Thanks for posting. We found The Plaster Guys a decent source for materials.

First water is added in bowl to that alginate is poured in,,,, given in book of dental materials by Philips
I dropped out of dental assisting class because I failed at this 🤦🏻♀️
U can do this it is just gone take time to get used and u will be like the women in the video 🖤 are u in y3 or 4 of dental school
Nice method..but u should have also shown the final impression...

I need more RESTO vids!!! PLEASE Make vids of both amalgam and composite restorations.
Woww .... good demonstration 🎉❤
Only good thing about taking an alginate is that it smells like frosting
I wish it tasted like frosting as well lol
That girl is a freakin champ! I’m so scared I gag just thinking about it. 🙈
Jackie Joyce i know! i probably gaged about 3 times during this video
A super greeting my friend! You have a outstanding channel going here my friend! A big thumbs up + a new friend!

when i get braces, i dont have to take these. my orthodontist has a machine that does it.
I never measure my water. I can’t let the measuring tool to dictate 😂
NEVER guess the water! always measure it
Thanks good job although we didn't see the result but good job
Yes, I was waiting
I learned how to take a good impression after a tons of mutual impression😅
😂😂
Me too 😂😂😂
I do the mix and put it in the trays but the dentist puts it in the patient's mouth
Great technique!
I never measure the scoops or water and my impressions come out perfect every time lol.
Me too
Same

Nice informative video
Dentist in Thailand dislike this texture. It’s overflow into patient’s throat.

You're supposed to add the powder to the water
Yes this is correct
Can yo put vedio on impression by impression compound for edantulos arch
Good👍
Damn ! That looks stressful ! But the Cute Patient with the gorgeous eyes, seems to handle it well.
fucking creep
u didnt show the impression .
Should I use cold or hot water? Which water sets it quicker?
You never put your fingers to tray, that blocks the material sticking to tray through the holes. You only use the handdle!
Beautiful 😻 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You don’t really need exact measurement tools. With experience you will know what it looks like for it to be the right mix.
Exactly
Absolutely incorrect. In fact, we measure the powder by weight to get the most exact ratio every time. If the ratio is off, the expansion will be off and your impression will be less accurate.
Totaly wrong. Always stay with the instructions for more accurate impressions.
I had a dental impression and it has torn the inside corner of my mouth after 4 atemts why
Why u didnt show the result at last😏😏😏
waith? im not supose to use boiling water? that explains a lot
good
but why you don't move the cheek?
should add powder to water no viceversa
TheCaracasgirl9 no we should add water to powder gradually

@@smateja2 no, its better to hold the tray with your fingers both sides. Its for make pressure equally to all surfaces.
u should pour the water first in the bowl and then the powder.
I have seen several of these videos and only 1 did it correctly. ALWAYS pour the powder into the water, NEVER pour the water into the powder.
@@billcrielly5507 Why is that?

I think it would be more useful if you performed all the steps. Like cheek and labial movements
may I know the water powder ratio please . for how many scoops of powder how many scoops of water to be added ???
it’s a 1:1 ratio
where can I find this kind of scoop? help pls
It usually is found inside the appropriate tin when newly opened .
Thanks a lot .
Why didn't you show the outcome impression.... I dont think you captured everything lol
Nice thanks👍
Whats the equipment and powders called?
Such a great video! Thank you so much
The border molding though 😬
Thank you!
U explained everything clear...but I guess...everytime we are explained...its the water added firstly...and then powder for mixing...and u did the opposite...why?
Thank you
You didnt show the sulcus recorded.. Should hav completed showing impression also...
What to do if my dental impression mould broke? What to do? And I put braces on my upper teeth? Someone reply please
Perfect
how do you twist a cup of alginate?
You did it wrong u should always wear gloves at all times when doing dental things also its powder to water not water to powder
I disagree. it's water to powder!
ugh I have to get one of these today
was it bad
same

You didn't show your impression. Looks like you missed some vestibule around periphery.
How much water do we use you never told us that
Forbidden protein powder
what type of powder is she using ?
Why didn't you show the impression?
That spatula is curved tho so getting rid of the excess powder w that method seems like it takes off more from the scoop. Idk tho i'm like 10
