Hopefully, the coming days will have more sunshine and less wind and cold. Mama Bear, so glad you're OK after your fall. Will have to admit that your position afterward kinda reminded me of a turtle who's gotten flipped over, lying on its shell and can't get flpped back to its feet. If I accidentally roll over on to my back in my sleep, it happens to me so I know how you felt. Of course I don't have the added weight of a pack and you did. Bless you. Ya'll really did well today. Weather, long hard climbs, miles, mud. Wow, and you conquered it all. You both are tough cookies. Hope you got good rest and are ready for tomorrow. My favorite morning routine these days. Wildflowers and coffee. There’s a whole bunch of us living vicariously through you two. My wife had both her knees replaced over the winter, so no hiking for us this summer. We will just have to virtually walk the AT with a couple vibrant wild sunflowers.

Yeah, it was a bummer the weather didn’t cooperate that day. So glad we didn’t chance it though. It turned pretty crazy not too long after we passed it.

What a great first day in the Smokeys. She's a bit like when my mum was first going through menopause. Freezing cold and volatile one minute, and sunny and warm the next 😂 Good times 👍
Glad you guys are back on trail. I can tell that you’re both excited to be back at it. Glad you didn’t hurt yourself in the fall. I hiked the whole Shenandoah National Park without falling until the last 1/4 mile and I fell bruising my arm really bad and sprang my wrest. But it was all good, just being in the woods makes up for all the aches and pains. Be blessed guys and thank you for blessing us with your videos. Stay safe and warm!!

Mama bear is taking good care of little bear (rain jacket). Shuckstake is amazing if there is decent views. Your weather did not cooperate for that. Crazy sleeting one day then hot another Glad the fall was slow and easy. Looking strong!

The weather in the mountains is like our crazy spring weather here in Wisconsin. We have a saying here, If you don't like the weather, wait 15 min. We've gone through all 4 seasons in a day many times. Lol, I'd imagine it's not very fun while hiking a mountain and shelter could be miles away. You'll have to get yourself a kickstand for your pack so you don't roll over, 😂 I think they should allow donkeys on the trail so they can carry your packs,🫏 lol, but then whats the fun of that? You two are starting to get your "trail legs". It is very evident in your videos. You are not tiring or struggling and are smiling and talking while climbing. You guys are doing great! The trail will begin to become much prettier with wildflowers and more scenic with views from this point. Seems as though everything is coming together for you two at the same time. Enjoy the Smokies and keep smiling! BTW, your tent will always be warmer than the shelters. We are definitely getting stronger everyday. The evolution is amazing to watch and feel. Imagine in another 30 days! The flowers out here are so amazing! Pops of color everywhere. And yes, we strategically arrive late at camp in the Smokies. 😁
I see Momma Bear has an Outdoor Vitals puffy. I have one also. You are the first hiker I’ve seen with Outdoor Vitals equipment since I purchased mine. I hope yours is working as good as mine! Slow and steady ladies gets the job done.
My first good belly laugh in a while. Mama Bear turtled on the trail. Ha. I’m not anti social, but I would not want to be packed into a shelter overnight with everyone. I’m not quite that social. That is the only downside to the Smokies. I’d deliberately arrive late to the shelters to avoid that issue. Otherwise I’d love to pick that section for a hike.
Hahaha! I’m so glad! We laughed so hard, too. That was partly why it was so hard to get up. Good times! And yes, shelters aren’t our thing. We haven’t stayed in one yet, and only plan to if the weather is severe.

I believe you were experiencing sleet. That’s when the snow comes down in small chunks. I don’t think it was hail.. but hail is similar. Glad you made it safely to the shelter. Great job 👏🏻
Skipping Shuckstack firetower was probably a good choice considering your fear of heights (if I remember correctly). On parts of the stairs there is only a railing on one side and it’s steel.
Eh, if the weather had been good, we would’ve gone up. My fear of heights hasn’t ever stopped me. 😂 But, on this day, we were racing against the incoming weather.
With that weather I would think you were in Minnesota 😂 if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes! Prayers for sunny days and some sisu for the not so sunny 😊 … and when it’s a little too toasty.

Congrats for making it to the Smokies. One of my places in the heart. We are packing up to move in a few weeks and we will be a LOT closer to them than we are now. Can't wait. But you skipped Shuckstack! I understand your logic but that is an awesome fire tower with an even more amazing view. How long has it been since you two Florida gals saw this much snow/sleet in a week! Mama B, that was the greatest documentary of a fall that I have ever seen. Hey Preacher! That’s an exciting move. Yeah, sometimes we have to make decisions based on safety, and we could feel the winds picking up and the weather moving in. We had a ways to go to get to camp. Unfortunate to skip it, but safety first. 😊 And this is the most we’ve seen that kind of weather. So fun! That slow mo fall was so funny. Absolutely, safety first. I love the views from the towers but most likely would have made the same decision you made. And especially when you have someone else to look out for. She is so much fun to watch and she has the perfect combination of a little girl growing into a young lady and still a playful kid, all rolled up into one. Y'all make a great team. You guys are doing great. Keep on keeping on. Haven't seen you stretching in the morning's or at the end of day. As you get stronger don't forget to work on upper body. Your legs are getting a good workout but not upper body. I think you will find it makes your hike better.
Very good advice! We usually stretch in our tent, but remembering upper body strength is important. We have gotten very good at slinging our packs though. 😂
We have a front row seat to watching you grow stronger each week. We can already see it. Mentally and physically. Imagine 90 days in. Crazy how strong you will be. Mentally and physically. Very impressive. Go Little Bear!!!
With 4 days of food and 1L of water, my pack is usually around 26lbs. Little Bear’s is about 15lbs. On this day 1 of the Smokies, I carried 8 days of food, so I estimated it to be about 32lbs.
I just laugh at how confused by all the changing weather you had. I live in Michigan and some day in early spring we get all Four season in one day snow fall( chilly) sun and rain. Glad you got up from your fall after thinking about it.
The entrance to the Smokies was easier for sure. And I even had 8 days of food vs 4 coming out of the NOC. I think that probably had a lot to do with the weather (it was so hot coming out of the NOC), plus, we were feeling down because family had just left. Sadness can drain your energy so easily.
Great video! I “listed” and fell on a backpacking trip too! There’s no saving it when you’re going over, so fall safely and just enjoy it!! I finally figured out that quilt meant sleeping bag. ❤

I hiked the whole Shenandoah National Park without falling until the last 1/4 mile and I fell bruising my arm really bad and sprang my wrest. But it was all good, just being in the woods makes up for all the aches and pains. Be blessed guys and thank you for blessing us with your videos. Stay safe and warm!!

Mama bear is taking good care of little bear (rain jacket). Shuckstake is amazing if there is decent views. Your weather did not cooperate for that. Crazy sleeting one day then hot another

The Smokies doesn’t require a bear canister; only that you properly store your food. Shelters all have bear cables.

The weather in the mountains is like our crazy spring weather here in Wisconsin. We have a saying here, If you don't like the weather, wait 15 min. We've gone through all 4 seasons in a day many times. Lol, I'd imagine it's not very fun while hiking a mountain and shelter could be miles away.
You'll have to get yourself a kickstand for your pack so you don't roll over, 😂 I think they should allow donkeys on the trail so they can carry your packs,🫏 lol, but then whats the fun of that? Thanks for taking us along on your memorable journey. 🥾

You two are starting to get your "trail legs". It is very evident in your videos. You are not tiring or struggling and are smiling and talking while climbing. You guys are doing great! The trail will begin to become much prettier with wildflowers and more scenic with views from this point. Seems as though everything is coming together for you two at the same time. Enjoy the Smokies and keep smiling! BTW, your tent will always be warmer than the shelters. In the Smokies, it pays to arrive to camp late so that the shelters are full. 😁

My first good belly laugh in a while. Mama Bear turtled on the trail. Ha. I’m not anti social, but I would not want to be packed into a shelter overnight with everyone. I’m not quite that social. That is the only downside to the Smokies. I’d deliberately arrive late to the shelters to avoid that issue. Otherwise I’d love to pick that section for a hike.
Me too. I couldn't ever use a shelter. Mice. Snorers. No privacy.
Hahaha! I’m so glad! We laughed so hard, too. That was partly why it was so hard to get up. Good times!
And yes, shelters aren’t our thing. We haven’t stayed in one yet, and only plan to if the weather is severe.

Skipping Shuckstack firetower was probably a good choice considering your fear of heights (if I remember correctly). On parts of the stairs there is only a railing on one side and it’s steel.
Eh, if the weather had been good, we would’ve gone up. My fear of heights hasn’t ever stopped me. 😂 But, on this day, we were racing against the incoming weather.
With that weather I would think you were in Minnesota 😂 if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes! Prayers for sunny days and some sisu for the not so sunny 😊 … and when it’s a little too toasty.

Congrats for making it to the Smokies. One of my places in the heart. We are packing up to move in a few weeks and we will be a LOT closer to them than we are now. Can't wait. But you skipped Shuckstack! I understand your logic but that is an awesome fire tower with an even more amazing view. How long has it been since you two Florida gals saw this much snow/sleet in a week! Mama B, that was the greatest documentary of a fall that I have ever seen. Yeah, sometimes we have to make decisions based on safety, and we could feel the winds picking up and the weather moving in. We had a ways to go to get to camp. Unfortunate to skip it, but safety first. 😊

Absolutely, safety first. I love the views from the towers but most likely would have made the same decision you made. And especially when you have someone else to look out for. She is so much fun to watch and she has the perfect combination of a little girl growing into a young lady and still a playful kid, all rolled up into one. Y'all make a great team. You guys are doing great. Keep on keeping on. Haven't seen you stretching in the morning's or at the end of day. As you get stronger don't forget to work on upper body. Your legs are getting a good workout but not upper body. I think you will find it makes your hike better.
Very good advice! We usually stretch in our tent, but remembering upper body strength is important. We have gotten very good at slinging our packs though. 😂

Another great video, just curious, what do y’all’s packs usually weigh when you start out each morning?
With 4 days of food and 1L of water, my pack is usually around 26lbs. Little Bear’s is about 15lbs. On this day 1 of the Smokies, I carried 8 days of food, so I estimated it to be about 32lbs.

I just laugh at how confused by all the changing weather you had. I live in Michigan and some day in early spring we get all Four season in one day snow fall( chilly) sun and rain. Glad you got up from your fall after thinking about it.
What was easier, the uphill out of the NOC or the entrance of the Smokies?
The entrance to the Smokies was easier for sure. And I even had 8 days of food vs 4 coming out of the NOC. I think that probably had a lot to do with the weather (it was so hot coming out of the NOC), plus, we were feeling down because family had just left. Sadness can drain your energy so easily.
