    Mama Bear - it really touched me when you thanked those plane occupants for their service. As a veteran during the Vietnam Era who was ridiculed and denigrated upon my return from Okinawa, it makes my heart sing when others remember our service and the sacrifices that we all made. Ya'll continue to amaze me with your endurance and stamina. You are really doing well. Good, as always, to see Ellie. Laughed to see Little Bear hanging on the monkey bars. The kid comes out. Ya'll take care of yourselves and each other. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

    I'm here to apologize. At the beginning of your hike I made a couple of comments that I regret. Basically just casting doubt, skeptical of the decision to hike with a child, ect.
    I've come to the conclusion that things are not the way they were in the 90's when I was hiking, no cell phones, no FB or RUclips. A collect call home in a town maybe.. So, all things considered, I suppose you guys are doing it exactly like everyone else and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with you both.
    I still don't know if you will make it all the way with the time and pace, but you know what? It doesn't matter. You've won me over whether you do or not, and I'm a grumpy old hardcore, crippled, retired, wish -I-still -could hiker. Good for you guys. I won't be snippy anymore..

    • @wildflowersadventures
      @wildflowersadventures  6 месяцев назад +10

      Thank you. 🙏🏼 No apology was necessary, but I’m grateful for it and accept it with my whole heart. I appreciate you and the time it took to write this message to us. It means a lot.
      Every day we’re out here, I balance what is best for my daughter and make decisions based on those conclusions. Some days we hike further, some days, we don’t. But however this ends, I will be proud of her and of the choices I made in her best interest.
      This journey is helping to shape who she is to become as an adult and I never lose sight of that. I’m a mama first, then an aspiring thru hiker second.
      After all, life is truly about the journey, and rarely about the final destination. 💙

    Since hikers have started using trail runners for backpacking, foot injuries have increased. They simply don't have enough cushion in the sole and heal to prevent the rocks from causing bruises, strains and at times fractures. If you feel that you need more cushioning and or protection, try using a pair of light hikers. They usually don't require break-in and are just a touch heavier than the trail runners. They look very similar to trail runners but the sole and heel is more padded with a thicker sole.
    Thank you for another great video, ladies. You are getting faster and going a little further every day. You two are doing fine.

      Thanks! I absolutely love my Hokas, but those rocks wore them down much faster than I had anticipated. The padding is normally perfect. I think I’m due for a new pair…the tread was worn down a lot by the rocks, too.
      I’ll be getting a new pair soon, and if need be, I’m thinking of adding Superfeet insoles to extend the life a bit if the tread still looks good.

    • @dougw63
      @dougw63 6 месяцев назад +1

      Super feet have a great!!! Reputation on the trail. Topo, Altra, and Hokas also have great reputations. You will learn more on trail than us couch potatoes can give you. Sometimes models change or the company changes or whatever…but your trail networking is probably better info than those of us who have been off trail for awhile. BUT…the “arrow head” pattern on the bottom is a must. Topo…Altra…those are the best for sticking to rounded, wet granite. Don’t go with a stiff sole!!! Meaning oboz and Merrill’s. They are western modeled shoes. Basically, pay attention to the tread. It matters more than most vloggers convey. Happy trails and congrats on your mother daughter journey.

    It's a good idea to plan for shoes along the way on my thru hike, I used 4 pairs, they get worn and can cause foot problems its just safer to plan a pair every 45 days depending on how often they get wet which can cause inner break down and terrain. Wanted to share this with you
    Hiking - "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, 'A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."
    - John Muir

      According to the dictionaries this isn't true.
      The etymology is unclear, but best bet is it comes from Middle English "santren" which means to muse. First example with present day meaning 17C.
      People in the medieval period wouldn't have been speaking modern French, especially in UK villages. French was the language of the nobility.

    Yay, your last day in the Smokies!! You're cruising and adding miles little by little.
    The plane crash was interesting. But I found it unusual that they didn't collect all the wreakage like normally happends so they can investigate. Maybe they didn't do that in 84.
    Thats roughing it forsure when you hadn't had a shower in 6 days. Maybe you need to pick up a tube of Lume body deodorant. It comes as a cream or stick but the cream is easiest to use on feet. You can use it anywhere on the body according to their commerical. I like the tangerine fragrance. I use it on my feet before going on a hike or camping in the summer. It works very well.
    Im sure that'll be the first thing you do when you get to your room.
    Thanks for taking us along. I really enjoy the little lunch breaks too.
    Be safe, have fun

    Great job! Enjoying the vids. Glad that little bear has an equal voice in everything. Those clothes will never be clean again…lol. How many times do you rinse your socks with no change in dirty right??? Haha. Keep up the good work…and maybe…just selfishly for me….show more of the social aspects of the trail. I know…some are camera shy…but if you ask in advance…people are usually open to it. Again…that’s just me…but i think others would appreciate it too.???

      Yes, she absolutely does have an equal voice. Truth be told, it’s more like 70/30. I make our choices based on what I think (and what she expresses) is in her best interest. That’s my job as her mama.
      After all, she’s a tough cookie and tougher than most adults I know, but she is still only 11.
      We show what we want to remember most of the times…and a lot of the time, it’s the people. But we will always balance our desire with respecting others and not invading the moment. Some moments are best lived and tucked away in your heart’s memories.

    • @dougw63
      @dougw63 6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes! Agree! The hike is the hike. The vlogging is a side issue. You are creating life moments that you will remember for decades. It gets even sweeter as time goes on. Meaning…today…hike…next year…glad we did it….the year after that….romantic…then after a few years…the time of your life. Happy trails.

    The "monkey bars" actually look like horse hitching posts. Do they do trail rides in the Smokies????

    • @ChristopherMarshburn
      @ChristopherMarshburn 6 месяцев назад +2

      They are hitching posts. People can ride horses up to the shelters, and a lot of them have hitching posts. There are almost 900 miles of trails in the park and more than half are horse accessible.

    • @wildflowersadventures
      @wildflowersadventures  6 месяцев назад +2

      My watch tells me I’m burning about 3,500- 3,800 calories per day. I’m not sure about Little Bear, but I’d guess a lot, too. We eat as much as we can per day, but it’s hard to maintain the calories in. When we get to town, we eat as much as we possibly can.
      She hasn’t lost much weight at all (maybe 1/2 pound). I’ve lost about 5lbs, but seem to be leveling out there…at least for now.
      The water tastes amazing. Fresh and clean!

    When the ground gets saturated, then big winds.. that’s what happens with trees here. That’s why you really don’t want to be in the woods during those times,’if you can avoid it.

    I have been to the site myself and did some amateur research. Based on my photos and other evidence, I am fairly certain that the the crash you describe is not the one you saw today. I believe it was from the crash of a C-141 cargo jet with nine crew aboard, on August 31, 1982. "The aircraft impacted 4908 foor John's Knob, in the Tellico Wildlife Area, 118 feet short of the peak." They say that is sounded like a bomb going off down in Gatlinburg.

    • @wildflowersadventures
      @wildflowersadventures  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hmmm, interesting. My quick research showed the other crash, but who knows. I had limited cell service so I only spent a short time. It’s also listed in FarOut as this crash, so it seems others have also done research as well.
      Thanks for sharing, though. Something to look into at a later date. Very interesting.
