    A masterpiece! The first movement establishes the rugged, intensely serious character of this quartet; the rhythmical, almost angry second movement has a strikingly original trio, as a pizzicato background embellishes a folk-like melody imitating the sound of a hardanger fiddle; the third movement's plaintive melody coveys the deepest emotion; then in the finale, a remarkable fugue is employed to seemingly expend all the energy the composer had left to compose this great work. Melartin, I believe, poured out his soul in this work as much as he did in his 3rd Symphony, to share with us.

    To say that this quartet is superlative is almost an understatement. The composer has music in his blood. Remarkable.

    Wow. Loved the entire piece but 20:54 and onwards...captivating! This quartet did an incredible job with this piece.

    I have just listened all four quartets. Wonderful experience. Hot comment: I sense those works have been influenced by Dvorak, although #3 / 4 have a stronger personality. Particularly impressive the slow movement of #4 whose language is so advanced to let me think Peteris Vasks (whose works I love) was on turn influenced by this masterpiece.

      First three Quartets are no problem, but yes No.4 does seem difficult. Several leads point to it being published by Edition Tilli Ltd., but there's no sign of it in their online catalogue. I suspect they may well have it in a dusty store-room, down in the basement somewhere. Contact them here;

      I'm an exchange student at SibA in Helsinki and the score/parts seem to be available in the library, I'll try to scan them soon - let me know if you'd still like it!
