Wow thank Les, we will be doing more. At the moment it’s a balance between sailing and flying off for work projects (we still need to make a bit of money, not retired yet!) We started this a a bit of fun but lots of people seem to like it so we plan to concentrate much more on it next year and have regular episodes. Meanwhile we’ve nipped over to Ibiza for a quick explore, lovely clear waters here so watch out for that one in a week or so. Cheers Steve

I disagree. BBC documentaries are rubbish, a con that people are forced to pay for even if they don't wish to watch BBC channels. This is by far superior. Who needs TV when there's content like this instead?

It is so good to see some of the stops we also made in 2008/9 and again 2013/14. We have done the trip you are on now a couple of times and plan to head back there soon. Our boat is now in Greece where we have been exploring for a few years now. When you finally get away from your captive inland sea hold up. Kudos for doing that trip in a 32 footer. My youth was spent sailing small boats in the North sea. Don't think I would do it now! Would love to hear your recommendations.
Firstly, thank you for replying. I didn’t expect that. I forgot to mention we are from Eastbourne where you started and we have sailed much of your trip. As for recommendations: Well, I’ll try and send you a word document. It is has to be read/looked at from the bottom up. But I can’t get it to you make sure you go to Denia. They have best toilets and showers you will get from now on; so enjoy. You get a whole room to yourself, and as Piccolo has no real facilities like that it was gold to us.
We always have our ball our when anchoring and light at night. Not sure where you are but I reckon about 50% have in anchorages. Love to know what the insurance companies would say in the event of an accident.
Mike Morgan the US, Bahamas, Bermuda, Azores. No balls on private boats. The US is horrible because people won’t even burn a light at night in anchorages (we always have the light on). The Bahamas was the first place I saw balls, but only on crewed charter megayachts. Where do you suggest buying a ball? Or would a black A3 fender count?

Lucky you!! We had 3 goes trying to get east from Barbate but we got beaten back by gale force easterlies twice. The third attempt was successful but as we neared Gibraltar a submarine surfaced literally 10 metres from our starbard bow. That was a shock that will stay with us for ever.
Wow, does this bring back some fond memories. I was in Gibraltar during my Navy days in the early 70's. They didn't have a cable car back then, at least I didn't see one. My buddies and I walked the whole way up on the road that zig zags back and forth all the way up.
We walked up a couple of days ago luckily it was a cooler day than the first time we went up. I can only imagine how tough it must have been for the army chaps carting all that ordinance up there.

Hey, great videos. Rather enspiring. I wish my wife could see the true adventure of just letting go of the life we all lead and think it’s the norm. So many other ways to live a life. You, lady are very good at presenting. You have a professional almost tv documentary way of presenting. Professional sound.
The tunnels are on the other side of the rock, quite a walk but well worth it. There's actually more lower caves and an underground lake that you can climb down to with a guide. We couldn't book one while we were there as there's only a couple of guides that do it and they were away. Will try again on the way out!

Yes they're amazing. It's also possible to climb right in with a guide to get to an underground lake. Couldn't find a guide to take us this time, will on the way out though!
Just to say that hydraulics do need a power source of some description, in your case a pickup off the engine shaft I believe. It follows that if the engine’s running then you’ll also be generating electrical power from the engine alternator, which even with run down batteries should be enough to power an electrical windlass if you chose. With a 24 v supply, good quality marine electric windlasses, bow thrusters, furlers, and winches are as reliable as hydraulics these days. Sailing a Hallberg Rassy 49 and an even bigger custom pilot schooner over many years, only one ~30 year old motor finally gave up, and that was most likely due to water ingress via a perished o-ring.
Well maybe Hallberg Rassy have a superior setup to other yachts, they do fit top end gear. But from my experience there’s no question that hydraulic systems are many times more reliable than high draw electronics. Yes you can mitigate that with 24v & 48v systems as it’s the high current that’s the killer, & what makes 12v systems really suck. I’ve lost count of the people I’ve met who have had major problems with high power electric motors on a boat, the two do not make a happy marriage!
@@Crazy_Worlds Sounds like you’ve been unlucky, my 35 year old tractor took a lot of abuse and didn’t always start, but the hydraulics never missed a beat.
Sailing Fair Isle - certainly will do - obviously the production is top quality as you would expect given your backgrounds but the , ‘style’ (and your relaxed personas) are spot on too - find it hard to believe that you could not get this commissioned as a program given the plethora of garbage that passes for reality TV these days
Well close! both a schooner and a ketch have two masts, Fair Isle is a cutter, two foresails. I agree the Nordhaven is interesting, quite unlike any other yacht. Not what I would choose but I can see the attraction, it would certainly be comfortable. I imagine expensive though?
I agree BBC documentary ,nice couple ,plenty of variety,history,facts,music and a few different color tops :):).There might be a competition spot the difference/odd one out later in the year food for thought !!!!

Thanks for the feedback Gavin. You're right when I looked back at the edit, too many pans. Unusual for me as I never pan without a tripod as a rule and I'm not using a tripod for this work so not sure how that happened! Steve
At 5:43 it was not an armada coming to England. The strategy of the Royal Navy was to prevent the joint French and Spanish fleet from entering the Mediterranean. As on that day the wind was but a zephyr the joint fleet left Cadiz under full sail and plodded south aided by the Portugal current. Admiral Nelson divided his fleet into two columns and approached the joint fleet from the west, it is recorded at walking pace. At first the British fleet got a pasting as a result of enemy broadsides but on cutting them in three sections the joint fleet was divided. Bear in mind that the forward joint van could not turn back north, so Nelson had the day, but died of his wound, a musket ball that entered at the shoulder and penetrated to the lung. The poor hero died of asphyxia as the blood filled his lung as the surgeon was unable to save him.

You’ll love your HC. I think the 41’s are the prettiest of the lot. We looked at several, but they were older at not in very good condition. Plus Judy saw the double bed in the 48 at said she really wanted that. You’re right about the dingy of course it was deflated in the saillocker for trip over & goes upside down on deck quite nicely for shorter passages. For little coastal hops we tend to tow and have the outboard mounted on the stern rail of the boat which is what we did this morning just as well as a 50 knot catabatic gust off Gib flipped it as we left.
Yes, that bed is a real eye catcher. The whole aft cabin thing is great. Pretty useless in a seaway, as you know. Great work. Loving the videos. Not sure if you have looked into "Patreon" yet. It's a great way for people to send a few dollars to support the work. Thanks again.

Well, Fair Isle is a beauty, but, she is a "really" big beauty. Retirement might be a little further away than you thought. Just going down to 40 foot might save you 20k a year. But, I love the content. Even monetizing on youtube would bring in some money with the quality you are shooting and editing. I do laugh though, with Judy's 'received' BBC pronunciation, I find myself often waiting for her to burst into a report of the latest air strike in Syria of something! Really great work. I knew someone would pull me up on that calling it an Armada! Should have said fleet. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was considered vital though as the Spanish were planning an attack on England. So it says in the history book I read sailing down anyway. Steve
Peter shame on you! You're Soooo far behind with the episodes!!! we've been stuck at anchor in the Mar Menor since Ep12, now on Ep17. So you've missed being thrown off land by the police, running out of water / food / gas reduced to trapping and eating seagulls! Okay I made that last bit up... but really Peter keep up!
Yes the doghouse is something we really wouldn't be without. It was built in Holland when the boat was new. I think two mof the HC's had it as an extra.
Well it did get warm in my edit suite (forehead cabin) yesterday, but I walked 10 paces to the cockpit dived in the water then sat and had a G&T so all was well! Where's your place in Spain! We're sailing from Gib to Cartagena over the next couple of weeks.

Hi Judy. Thanks very much for the nice and interesting videos that you release. In the minute 09:56 of this video (Ep. 5) you are seated in a chair which looks to be on the cockpit. Is it a garden chair that you cut off the legs or is it a product that you can buy and install in your cockpit?. How do you anchor it to the cockpit to dont let it move? Hi José, that chair was something we got off Amazon, I think they called it a stadium chair. I would'r recommend it though. It lasted less than a year and became uncomfortable quite quickly as there are metal bars in it that stick in your back. The ones we have now are much better. We actually bought them from friends of ours in Cartagena who had bought too many so I dont know where they're from, but they say 'comfort seat' on them and they are from the Netherlands. You can see them in our later episodes.
It's just a big roll of rode. Impossible to keep long lengths of thick rope without having it tangle up when you need it any other way. Sea anchor, long length on a bight streamed off the stern as a drogue, line to shore, tow rope... always a need for rode on a cruising boat!
I'm trying to understand how you were managing over 8kts with just a headsail out, and that was not filled. It was flapping away. In fact if I hadn't known you were doing 8kts I'd have wondered why you didn't have a coloured sail out. Was the current that strong?
Yes! 4 knots of current. You can play the currents in the straight, there is sometimes massive differences within 50 meters. You can also get some contrary currents inshore if you find yourself fighting a current. W-E is much easier than E-W, we will see how we do on the way out

Thank you, yes Malta is definitely on the list, partly because I think Valletta harbour is one of the most spectacular places to sail into, but mostly because my mother was born there and my sister lives there now!

Wow though - did you say you drop down to about 60% house battery capacity each night at anchor? That sounds lower than ideal. What does your voltage drop to? By the way, continuing on the other thread about alternators and matched pairs of belts, mine are a matched pair of Gates green stripes. If you send me your email I can send you a picture of what a matched pair of boxes looks like?
NZL8970 yes I found some matched pairs on line after you said you had some. The Gates dealer we saw insists the tolerance is such that you don’t need them any more though. Mine seem fine, no dust. And yes 60% is normal in the morning on a day that the battery’s didn’t get a full charge the day before, we see a min of 12.4 volts, I think most people aim for a working range with lead acids of 50-80% with the occasional full charge on a marina day or a motoring day.

Yes that's a very good point. The pilot book says you can leave it at La Linea yacht club but doesn't seem you can now and if you go into the marina security will tell you to bu@*^r off! We just tied out dinghy to the break water by the beach, it's so delapadated no one would steal it!

I take it you guys did not have to contend with Orca attacks while you where there. I know that they have been attacking boats recently in the straights of Gibraltar and there is a ban on small vessels below 15 meteres.
No they seem to stay on the rock. They are quite territorial with each other, there's several family groups that stick together. They are fed up there so they probably dont feel the need to leave. They would have a job getting out of Gib. as they would have to cross the runway like everything else that comes in and out of here! I agree though it's surprising they don't seem to come down to the town in Gib.

Not at the moment for the cameras I use on board. I use gimbals and steadicam for broadcast work, but I don't use the larger cameras on the boat. Steve

Trafalgar was probably the most important naval battle in British history. We might all have french accents if not for Nelson!!

We went to the Siege Tunnels while in Gibraltar (on a cruise) and loved it. Another great vlog. We never saw the caves though they look amazing.
The tunnels are on the other side of the rock, quite a walk but well worth it. There's actually more lower caves and an underground lake that you can climb down to with a guide. We couldn't book one while we were there as there's only a couple of guides that do it and they were away. Will try again on the way out!

Yes they're amazing. It's also possible to climb right in with a guide to get to an underground lake. Couldn't find a guide to take us this time, will on the way out though!

Just to say that hydraulics do need a power source of some description, in your case a pickup off the engine shaft I believe. It follows that if the engine’s running then you’ll also be generating electrical power from the engine alternator, which even with run down batteries should be enough to power an electrical windlass if you chose. With a 24 v supply, good quality marine electric windlasses, bow thrusters, furlers, and winches are as reliable as hydraulics these days. Sailing a Hallberg Rassy 49 and an even bigger custom pilot schooner over many years, only one ~30 year old motor finally gave up, and that was most likely due to water ingress via a perished o-ring.
Well maybe Hallberg Rassy have a superior setup to other yachts, they do fit top end gear. But from my experience there’s no question that hydraulic systems are many times more reliable than high draw electronics. Yes you can mitigate that with 24v & 48v systems as it’s the high current that’s the killer, & what makes 12v systems really suck. I’ve lost count of the people I’ve met who have had major problems with high power electric motors on a boat, the two do not make a happy marriage!

Well close! both a schooner and a ketch have two masts, Fair Isle is a cutter, two foresails. I agree the Nordhaven is interesting, quite unlike any other yacht. Not what I would choose but I can see the attraction, it would certainly be comfortable. I imagine expensive though?

Merci, oui St Micheals était une surprise. Quand nous rentrons à Gibraltar, nous voulons le chronométrer de manière à pouvoir assister à un concert là-bas. Ils ont des concerts de musique classique depuis environ un mois. Vous pouvez également organiser des excursions spéciales pour descendre dans les grottes inférieures où se trouve un lac souterrain. At 5:43 it was not an armada coming to England. The strategy of the Royal Navy was to prevent the joint French and Spanish fleet from entering the Mediterranean. As on that day the wind was but a zephyr the joint fleet left Cadiz under full sail and plodded south aided by the Portugal current. Admiral Nelson divided his fleet into two columns and approached the joint fleet from the west, it is recorded at walking pace. At first the British fleet got a pasting as a result of enemy broadsides but on cutting them in three sections the joint fleet was divided. Bear in mind that the forward joint van could not turn back north, so Nelson had the day, but died of his wound, a musket ball that entered at the shoulder and penetrated to the lung. The poor hero died of asphyxia as the blood filled his lung as the surgeon was unable to save him.

Ha! Well actually that’s only because people have taken the word Armada to mean the Spanish Armada of 1588, when actually it means ‘fleet of military vessels’ we can all be pedantic!!! No I have already held my hands up to that one, bad choice of words.

You’ll love your HC. I think the 41’s are the prettiest of the lot. We looked at several, but they were older at not in very good condition. Plus Judy saw the double bed in the 48 at said she really wanted that. You’re right about the dingy of course it was deflated in the saillocker for trip over & goes upside down on deck quite nicely for shorter passages. For little coastal hops we tend to tow and have the outboard mounted on the stern rail of the boat which is what we did this morning just as well as a 50 knot catabatic gust off Gib flipped it as we left.

Well, Fair Isle is a beauty, but, she is a "really" big beauty. Retirement might be a little further away than you thought. Just going down to 40 foot might save you 20k a year. But, I love the content. Even monetizing on youtube would bring in some money with the quality you are shooting and editing. I do laugh though, with Judy's 'received' BBC pronunciation, I find myself often waiting for her to burst into a report of the latest air strike in Syria of something! Really great work. Steve needs to read his history. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was in 1805. The Spanish Armada was Sir Francis Drake in 1588 !!!!!!
I knew someone would pull me up on that calling it an Armada! Should have said fleet. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was considered vital though as the Spanish were planning an attack on England. So it says in the history book I read sailing down anyway. Steve

Yes the doghouse is something we really wouldn't be without. It was built in Holland when the boat was new. I think two mof the HC's had it as an extra.

Well it did get warm in my edit suite (forehead cabin) yesterday, but I walked 10 paces to the cockpit dived in the water then sat and had a G&T so all was well!

Is it a garden chair that you cut off the legs or is it a product that you can buy and install in your cockpit?.

Hi José, that chair was something we got off Amazon, I think they called it a stadium chair. I would'r recommend it though. It lasted less than a year and became uncomfortable quite quickly as there are metal bars in it that stick in your back. The ones we have now are much better. We actually bought them from friends of ours in Cartagena who had bought too many so I dont know where they're from, but they say 'comfort seat' on them and they are from the Netherlands. You can see them in our later episodes.

It's just a big roll of rode. Impossible to keep long lengths of thick rope without having it tangle up when you need it any other way. Sea anchor, long length on a bight streamed off the stern as a drogue, line to shore, tow rope...
always a need for rode on a cruising boat!
I'm trying to understand how you were managing over 8kts with just a headsail out, and that was not filled. It was flapping away. In fact if I hadn't known you were doing 8kts I'd have wondered why you didn't have a coloured sail out. Was the current that strong?
Yes! 4 knots of current. You can play the currents in the straight, there is sometimes massive differences within 50 meters. You can also get some contrary currents inshore if you find yourself fighting a current. W-E is much easier than E-W, we will see how we do on the way out

Thank you, yes Malta is definitely on the list, partly because I think Valletta harbour is one of the most spectacular places to sail into, but mostly because my mother was born there and my sister lives there now!

By the way, continuing on the other thread about alternators and matched pairs of belts, mine are a matched pair of Gates green stripes. If you send me your email I can send you a picture of what a matched pair of boxes looks like?
NZL8970 yes I found some matched pairs on line after you said you had some. The Gates dealer we saw insists the tolerance is such that you don’t need them any more though. Mine seem fine, no dust. And yes 60% is normal in the morning on a day that the battery’s didn’t get a full charge the day before, we see a min of 12.4 volts, I think most people aim for a working range with lead acids of 50-80% with the occasional full charge on a marina day or a motoring day.

Yes that's a very good point. The pilot book says you can leave it at La Linea yacht club but doesn't seem you can now and if you go into the marina security will tell you to bu@*^r off! We just tied out dinghy to the break water by the beach, it's so delapadated no one would steal it!

I take it you guys did not have to contend with Orca attacks while you where there. I know that they have been attacking boats recently in the straights of Gibraltar and there is a ban on small vessels below 15 meteres.
No sightings for us, I don’t think it would be a problem for us though they like spade rudders a keel hung rudders no fun apparently!

No they seem to stay on the rock. They are quite territorial with each other, there's several family groups that stick together. They are fed up there so they probably dont feel the need to leave. They would have a job getting out of Gib. as they would have to cross the runway like everything else that comes in and out of here! I agree though it's surprising they don't seem to come down to the town in Gib.

It happens a lot when the wind is from the East yes (the Levanta) usually just early morning though :)

do you have a gimbal or stabilizer you can use on your cameras?
Not at the moment for the cameras I use on board. I use gimbals and steadicam for broadcast work, but I don't use the larger cameras on the boat. Steve
