How Latvians are preparing for the worst-case scenario of a Russian invasion | DW News

  • Since the beginning of Russia's war on Ukraine, Latvia has seen a surge in citizens joining the National Guard to get military training. But they are not the only ones trained to maintain the national defense - so are civilians. Latvia holds nationwide exercises each year combining training for both military and civilian readiness for a hypothetical attack that local residents tell Teri Schultz no longer seems impossible.

    If Russian attacks Latvia - the following scenario is this:
    NATO forces launches into the war from both sides - EAST & WEST, while Russian allies Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan & North Korea declare war on NATO. An unexpected plot twist happens and China attempts to backstab Russia by taking over Siberia and it's precious resources. Japan sees an opportunity to regain it's lost territories and declares war on Russia as well. Kazakhstan remembers what Russia did to Aral sea and also declares war on Russia. Seeing this Russian allies fall back. Russia is now alone against NATO, China, Japan and Kazakhstan. The war continues for 1 year and within this timeframe Putin flees to his arctic base within Novaya Zemlya. Eventually, a civil war breaks out within Russia which causes the country to disintegrate into several newly formed countries as former autonomous okrugs and oblasts like Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia & Tuva sees an opportunity for the independence. Russia has lost massive amount of territories and now has only about half of its size only to the west of Urals as almost whole Siberia has been taken by Chinese forces.

      @Nauda999 7 месяцев назад

      that is extra 0.1% preparedness. Latvia giving significant part of it's heavy military equipment to Ukraine lost them some 20-30% of preparedness.
      in 2020 NATO itself predicted that if Russia invaded Latvia, they would take 50% of territory in 12 to 24 hours, before any action could be taken by NATO. That is before Latvia gave away so much equipment.
      Latvia is too small, if Russia wants to invade there is nothing that can stop them, only option is to make sure Russia doesn't want to.

      @@Nauda999 You have wrong or incomplete information. I will not comment on equipment section, for reasons. But we have it and our troops are better equipped than our Eastern neighbors and even some Western.
      About defence section I'll mention, that we differ on how we conduct war and defence. In Latvia, in case of an attack or war, our troops and civilian population have the rights to arm themselves, mobilize and conduct counteroffensive without declaration of war, without governments or military orders and involment. Also population on ground are in core freedom loving, and they will not tolerate anyone, who would try to rob them of it. Our legal documents states of not recognizing any attacking power, even in most brutal occupation and war situation, and destruction of government, state and so on - only total defence and resistance untill completely victory.
      In conclusion some words, why we support Ukraine. In past we experienced the same brutality from our neighbors and we are aware of Russia's intention of restoring it's previous "empire" and threats to West, so we firmly opose that. In past we experienced ourselves how most, if not all of the democratic West, ignored the fate of countries from Northern, Central and Eastern Europe after WW2 and how crimes against humanity where ignored and we will not allow for that to happen again.

    If Russian attacks Latvia or any of the Baltic States - the following scenario is this:
Russia has lost massive amount of territories and now has only about half of its size only to the west of Urals as almost whole Siberia has been taken by Chinese forces.

    bro, this decline was caused due to mass migration, many Russians returned to Russia because they did not want to become Latvian citizens meanwhile many Latvians left for better work opportunities to the west. Soviets had done huge damage to the Latvian economy and this would take several years to be fixed. Russians always felt as being higher human species than Latvians which proves that they had the same ideology as Na*is. They are entitled by their history so much that they feel like God's, however their success is based only on huge population sacrifices. Nothing more. It's just a meat grinder.
