I am also 12, but I watch your channel all the time! SO inspiring! I have a small chicken coop, and have been raising a chick for 2 months now! I am also getting another hen from a friend.
Best chicken coop is one that is entirely surrounded by strong wood materials raised off the ground with metal roof...aka a good storage shed structure...with the run totally enclosed. You made great points in using good strong materials. After you watch a german shepherd eat a doghouse (over a period of time), tacklebox with hooks, and aluminum siding, you realize that canines can and will chew, tear off boards if they really want to & are given time. I have watched & scared off large raccoons in the city tearing off oak planks off an old house to gain entry. Now I live in the country where we have every critter you could name except bears & cougars and the jury is still out on that...and we free range our birds during the day and lock them into the barn at night. Everything wants to eat chicken...lock your birds up at night in a solid built storage barn with windows that are wire covered & you won't loose any....during the day give them natural bushes and trees to hide in from hawks & you should be good.
Here in our area (south western NY) coyotes are a huge problem.... We use donkeys to defend against coyotes.... for some reason the coyotes wont mess with a donkey and stay away. A couple of the Amish farmers here say the donkeys will stomp a coyote to death and are not afraid to confront them though I've never seen it happen myself.
Hi Becky, I am a city girl that found your channel about 4 days ago, Girl you are addictive to watch!!! already I have watched more than 20 of your videos.... i have ordered what I need to make soap and laundry detergent lol and made your delicious brownies (hubby was a big fan of that by the way} I have a small yard so I can only guess my neighbors would NOT appreciate chickens. but that would be a dream for me. I am recently retired so that dream has come and gone so i will just keep watching your videos, learning, laughing and enjoying all of your adventures. thanks for sharing ALL of your knowledge with us from your beautiful homestead... I am a big fan for sure....
when we had chickens in Texas we used chain link fencing with a roof that was to tall (about 8 feet) for anything but a bird to land on top of it. the bottom was sheet metal all the way around about 3 to 4 foot. we never had any issues with coyotes trying to get to our chickens. Our dogs were a deterrent too. but with them inside at night and the chickens outside we didn't have to worry never lost any chickens to predators. they free ranged all day and were locked up at night safe and sound. A hand full or 2 of grain was all it took to get them inside. we gave eggs away to our neighbors and had plenty for our family. would be nice to have them again we just don't live where we can at this time.
In Connecticut our coyotes have bred with timber wolves up north. They are much larger, and meaner than western or southern coyotes. They trot through the yard all the time. I can't tell you how many dogs go missing in our small town but it's a lot. My lab is 110 lbs but I have to watch him outside at night. The chicken coop is easy prey if they decide to go for it.
Melissa Shelton what kind of Fort Knox? I didn't know if brick would actually work. I am doing chickens next summer. An I want to do research on the right coop and everything. I got coyotes in my area.
Hey Deb... I don’t think I can add a picture on here but I’ll try to explain it... my husband has been building a hen house but he’s using only plywood 5/8 inch I believe and 4x4’s, 2x4’s... really heavy duty stuff! My brother in law was in this weekend and said it was a man cave for chickens! Lol. We haven’t made the run yet but we are going to be using heavy gage wire and either 2x4’s or 4x4’s.... and line the bottom with heavy stones. I’m praying this works because last year was devastating and I don’t want a repeat! Hope this helps ... best of luck with yours next year! 😉
A neighbor told me they saw a coyote in the neighborhood a few weeks ago. So far we have not seen any signs of it or any raccoons. I think having a couple of dogs really does help !! Great video Becky !!
I have 10 chicks and im thankful they are healthy because i watch becky's videos all about chickens and im learning things that helps me to take care of my chicks now they are 3 weeks old and growing bigger and bigger thank you for becky who inspired me to rake care of my chicks 🐣🐣🐣🐔🐓
I made my coop big walk in with a 18x6 chicken run with metal on the top and chicken wire but have had that torn up so I have hog panel on it as well. And I have chased off a huge pack 14 coyotes with a metal kettle and spoon on more then 1 occasion
California Coyotes visit backyards in highly populated, human packed cities, walking along backyard cinder block fences shopping for pets and domesticated animals. Just the other day a work colleague's small terrier was snatched and munched. This was not at night but at 10:30am with people up and about inside the house. Brazen, motivated hunters suffering from the drought will defeat almost any security measures.
This coop is small enough to be moveable. So every night I put bricks around it, just in case we forget to turn on the electric fence... or the power goes out. We also have a light on all night shining in the area, the kind that was used for keeping the chicks warm, with a regular light bulb.
I have said it over and over, 1 everyone's Homestead is different. My chickens are protected by my great farm dogs. Predators come at night, farm dog runs over and chases predator away. It works great for me. ☀️❤️☀️
😶 Glad u caught it Nancy ,, or what ppt ever it was... my old eyes missed the wire , I just remember years ago I had percistant everything's going over under dropping from the sky day and night , and I had great dogs outside and in but it came down to putting the fence at least two feet in the ground , some big rocks and wire across the top and a locking door with wire over the eves air flow area and this was in Pasco County fl , Wesley Chaple Angus Vally area so. Did the same here even though were way way north but no telling what's in the woods surrounding us that learks in the shadows. I've heard a panther been seen , haven seen one of those since One walked past the car while I was parked waiting for the school bus as the sun came up in land o lakes in the 80's
i love your appreciation of these coyotes and the need they have to find food every day of their lives! they are there to keep the rabbit numbers down and other vermin. i love your life....im trying to think how i can do the same thing here in australia!! dont you have snakes??
My mini pig passed away 3 days after giving birth and my dad didn't think any of it he buried her out in the paster and the next morning she was diged up and we for got we had coyotes
that's completely wrong as long as you have the right dog then they can kill like two or three coyotes seriously something like a game bred pitbull would probably be able to kill one or two especially if they had a guarding collar
I thank you very much for this video. We are new to homesteading and already have come up against a bobcat - (s)he got 3 chicks. This week it's dealing with Coyote. I'm really feelin' the need for a donkey but I've got to put in some great fencing 1st. Even with the fencing I will have to wait for the donkey to grow up, unless I find an older donkey. I knew there would be challenges but gosh, I didn't realize how much pressure wild animals can put on a few itty bitty chickens! At least you give me hope. I've been feeling real down in the dumps lately - like it's hopeless. And I haven't even told you about the flying predators - the eagles and hawks or the slithery ones like the poisonous snakes. I think everything must want a chicken dinner. I'm going to need to hire Mrs. Melissa Shelton's (below) husband to build me Ft. Knox!
Don't be down. Nature is beautiful but you have to build smart. People have lost many skills in this country, but you can figure things out. The key is always in the design of all your outbuildings. Learn to look at your coop and think like a predator to figure out it's weaknesses. Homesteading is hard work. ☀️❤️☀️
Yea you have a predator load :) hang tough and yes build a solid wood barn (can be a large storage shed with windows) and a totally enclosed run with buried heavy guage wire (don't scrimp on the guage). My birds free range during daylight hours but even then I don't let the birds out until after 3pm because of hawk pressure. Lock them before dusk. and lastly sounds like you need LGDs 2-3 to deal with larger ones. Best of luck to you.
You are so very right, Ms. Becky. This land was once part of my 7th great-grandfather's farm. He farmed it 250 years ago and he didn't have good people on the Internet to help him. I've gotta get smarter. Thank you.
A friend of mine lost her little chihahua dog to coyotes. She had a big dog and the small one and a pack of coyotes kept the big one busy and took the small one for dinner.
I love your videos so much I'm only 12 years old and I'm getting ducklings. I was wondering if you could make a video about how to raise them. Thank you so much.
Where I live if your cute little dog ran into the woods after a coyote he would be killed. Coyotes will tag team dogs here and have a coyote purposefully get chased into the woods where the pack is waiting. Dogs much larger than your are killed by coyotes here. I hope your little man doesn't fall prey to them. You must not have many predators at all with your coop set up. It looks convenient but here in the Pacific North West a multitude a predators would kill off those chickens very easily. Georgia must be veeeeeeeeeeeeery different from a predator perspective.
I live in North FL and we have lots of predators. If I didn't have my dogs, my chicken coop would have to be Fort Knox. Like I always say, build your coop to accommodate where you live. Every Homestead is different. ☀️❤️☀️
I lost 24 Banty chickens to a young cougar. we weren't too concerned about the flock because ours were nesting in the tall Madrona trees. We found out the hard way! Cougars can jump 20 feet straight up according to paperwork given us by the game warden.
Kalamity Everyone in Oregon varies because it depends on many things. I’ve had chickens 15 years and never lost one to a coyote. I’ve had my dogs go after them and still have them. You just have to be aware and keep things clean, have lights around and be present on your place.
Hey Becky.....I’m buying a lot in Palatka Fl,8,276 sq ft,is this big enough to have a chicken coop? How Many chickens /Hens/Roosters would do good in this size lot.
Electric wire fence does work against coyotes. I put one on the top of my block wall using plastic insulators to keep the electrified wire from touching the block wall, and one wire is electrified while the second wire is grounded, so once anything tries to climb over my fence they touch the wires and get a nasty shock. Coyotes quickly learn from the painful experience. And I suppose it would work on a human trying to climb my fence as well. These are low voltage transformers meant to shock cattle and horses to keep them away from fences, and so they are quite painful. I've felt the shock myself by mistake.
Hi Becky, love your videos. This question does not relate this video. I have injured chicken. Her earlobe is missing. Do you have any advice on how to help her?? I have a RUclips video on her, please just take a moment to see if you can give any advice. 🙏 thank you
I think you should Cover that big whole you have in your chicken coop, because a coyote, raccoon, etc could dig, or jump over that fence and easily get your chickens.
cheapest and easiest solution go to the pound and get a mean Pitbull ( 2 or 3 if your a good trainer) just don't let it inside the Coop or you're going to have some problems
@Becky: Really enjoyed your video. Such great tips and insights. Coyote are known to be the smartest & most cunning animal in N.America. Try as we may we might loose a few chickens. Whether to coyote or other reasons. How does the old t arm saying go? "Plant three lose one." Something like that.Thank you for sharing.
It's true, I go with nature, not against it. Homesteading is not for the wimpy. Country life is hard and you see first hand the cycle of life and how everything fits together. ☀️❤️☀️
Several times we've heard coyotes too close. Chucky the truck driving Chihuahua gets out there and barks and tells them they'll find trouble if they come around here. And the coyotes find another place to hunt. He has pinned down possum as big as him. And wild cats don't stand a chance. It's too soon, but we have to replace his buddy who passed away from rattle snake bite. He was a 95 lb lab mix with a gentle soul.
Diana Cassinelli I don't profess to teach Becky anything, but if you read her comments a lot of young kids follow her. It is irresponsible to profess any pet dog can hold its own against a coyote. I by no means am an idiot, having completed a Ph.D in ag science, I believe that distinction is yours alone.
Diana Cassinelli I have Chickens, ducks , horses for 11 years... dogs and cats all my life and I watch Becky but it doesnt mean she knows more or is smarter than anyone else she just gives her opinion just like everyone ....stop being a internet bully and take in all the comments and learn from them !
We lost our first chicks to "something". Premier1supply.com makes an electric poultry "net" fence. It is the only thing that works for us to keep out preditors. If anyone would like more info, look up their 800 number, they are very helpful on the phone. My setup cost a little under $500: 164 feet of fence (48" high), 1 gate, Hot Shock 5 energizer, 8 rigid fiber posts (not mandatory), 8 pigtail posts (to hold electric cable up off ground, not mandatory). This fencing goes around the whole big area, surrounding the coop. We don't have anything yet for air preditors. We may need to put up bird netting or something. We kept them in the house until 3 weeks old. Then, put them in the coop for a few hours a day. Then in the coop all day, and put them up in the nesting area at night, they learned to go up there at sunset. After a couple of days later, we open the coop door to free range, and make sure they are safe at night in the nesting area. I give them feeders and waters in both nest area and run area in the coop. Plus cardboard lid of freshly dug weeds and kitchen scraps.
happy productions bullying and egg eating are signs of stress, nutritional deficiencies, over crowding and boredom. If you just threw your new hens in with the old one, remove them immediately; take one, place it in a dog cage for a week in the other hens’ coop and run, allow them to become friends then integrate the rest, read integration articles on BackYard Chickens. They need at least 18% protein and free choice oyster shell, if they can’t free range, they need free choice grit. They need a MINIMUM of 4sqft per in the coop and 10sqft per in the run, 1 nest box per three hens and 1ft of roosting space per chicken. For 6 chickens that’s a 6x4 coop and 6x10 run, 6ft of roosting space, 2 nest boxes. Happy to help if you need it :)
It's tricky adding new chickens to the coop. If they are all the same size it can be done but you need to make sure the coop is plenty big enough. Chickens need a lot of room to be happy and healthy. Also make sure you have food and water in the hen house and way out in the run at the opposite end. ☀️❤️☀️
Can you make another video about raising chicks in a bunny Hutch because we have a bunny Hutch that we are raising chicks. I am 12 years old and this is new to me. Or could you also just comment and give me some tips please thank you so much and I love your video good job.!
The neighbor down the street had a serious raccoon problem. We have not. Maybe it is because we have a male lab that "marks" his territory (sleeps inside at night but does ask to go out at least once ea night) and also a female bloodhound who likes to go outside once or twice each night. (my shepherd is old and no longer protects the property. She stays in a lot now). Neighbor had no dog. ?? Also the hen house is solid and they get locked in at night. They free range during the day. Had one hawk attack a white hen in 2 1/2 years but the rooster scared it off. Hen survived.
Homestead In The Woods I've gotten so desperate (traps didn't work, and I'm in serious need of sleep) that I'm trying a deer remedy. Saving my am urine in a jar, & pouring a small amt every so many feet, around the pens. It's worked for two weeks, but I do NOT want to keep doing this! Hoping some other idea works.
Becky's Homestead designing a coop is difficult depending on your areas and the types of predators you have. Your idea of a coop would be TERRIBLE for his situation and mine.
Do you shut them in at night? What about raccoons crawling up that roost? We took a cotton trailer turned it upside down and covered with tin, they have the run of 5 acres during the day. 😝
Lady the walls surrounding your coupes are to low. Coyotes can EASILY jump a 6 foot fence. Happens here in Southern California often. You best raise your cause walls at least 8 feet.
Hey Becky I’m only 12 but I love your channel. It’s so inspiring. I love your homestead
Coyotes can jump any fence lower than 8ft.
Put a top on the coop. ☀️❤️☀️
Becky's Homestead just stating a fact.
that is very helpful
Here in our area (south western NY) coyotes are a huge problem.... We use donkeys to defend against coyotes.... for some reason the coyotes wont mess with a donkey and stay away. A two timing rooster and jealous hens, that cracked me up!
Hahahaha I'm glad I can give you a giggle☀️❤️☀️

Hahaha! Little hussy hens with the two timing 🐓 lol too funny.
Anyone else who imagined Becky with a sword, fighting against coyotes? Hahaha
Hahaha, whatever it takes ☀️❤️☀️
They got 11 of my 12 chickens last year!😢 This year my husband build a Fort Knox hen house!!!!
Ours is stone base with sawmill lumber for the building. But then again ours was built in the 1940s lol. Nothing has ever gotten inside though
Dig the fence line down into the ground a couple of feet, so no animal can dig under it.
A neighbor told me they saw a coyote in the neighborhood a few weeks ago. So far we have not seen any signs of it or any raccoons. I think having a couple of dogs really does help !! Great video Becky !!
Spotlights help too - it scares them off here.
My roo always crows when I’m on the phone! Cracks me up
What about hawks? I had 6 of mine taken in a two week time frame.

What a great episode Becky! Very good tips.
I made my coop big walk in with a 18x6 chicken run with metal on the top and chicken wire but have had that torn up so I have hog panel on it as well. And I have chased off a huge pack 14 coyotes with a metal kettle and spoon on more then 1 occasion

Hardware cloth is the key to a good coop in my opinion. I dug down 3 feet and put hardware cloth in. Nothing has went through it.
I just love this lady🤣

Respected madam, whole of ur videos r so informative ,carry on
Thank you, I'm glad you like them ☀️❤️☀️
Becky's Homestead most most welcome
Becky's Homestead respected madam, shipping of chicken is possible to my home country pakistan,
It still amazes me unless I'm missing a dropwall or wire, I'm not seeing , how is ur coop safe at night if it's wide open
I have said it over and over, 1 everyone's Homestead is different. My chickens are protected by my great farm dogs. Predators come at night, farm dog runs over and chases predator away. It works great for me. ☀️❤️☀️
Also she has wire over that whole open space. I barely saw it in the video.
Nancy Fahey she only has wire over the area where they eat! This way they can eat without being on the lookout for hawks
Thankfully we don’t have this issue in england but we do have pesky foxes! Lost three chickens to one last year.
i love your appreciation of these coyotes and the need they have to find food every day of their lives! they are there to keep the rabbit numbers down and other vermin. i love your life....im trying to think how i can do the same thing here in australia!! dont you have snakes??
Almost done with our coop and we have metal roof! Big house too. High roosts
Becky listens to Joe Rogan too! I didn't think I could love her more 💪😎
The dogs haircut! 😂 Absolutely adorable!
Hahaha he wears it well. ☀️❤️☀️
Coyotes also like dogs & cats.. of ALL sizes. Be careful of your pets. That's a pretty big dog but no match for a couple Coyotes.
They make enough noise and are ALWAYS out there, so the predators move on to easier pickings. ☀️❤️☀️
My mini pig passed away 3 days after giving birth and my dad didn't think any of it he buried her out in the paster and the next morning she was diged up and we for got we had coyotes

@hoodiewoman louisiana Actually, WOLVES hunt in packs- Coyotes hunt alone or rarely a pair. Almost never in packs.
You can add carpet tack strips on an asphalt roof.
I thank you very much for this video. We are new to homesteading and already have come up against a bobcat - (s)he got 3 chicks. This week it's dealing with Coyote. Thank you, Ms. Zinn. I agree about the LGD's. Just have to make sure fencing is in place to keep them safe also. I appreciate your advice.
We have owls, foxes and coyotes here. It's work.
A friend of mine lost her little chihahua dog to coyotes. She had a big dog and the small one and a pack of coyotes kept the big one busy and took the small one for dinner.
A fox took out half my flock last week in the morning hours. No joke, Becky tells it straight!
Love your videos! Thank you
Hi Becky could you make a video about how to set up a dust bath please?
I love your videos so much I'm only 12 years old and I'm getting ducklings. I was wondering if you could make a video about how to raise them. Thank you so much.
Hi I am 11 and I have raised a lot of ducks in the past i can make a video on duckling care if you like. What breed of ducks are you looking to get?

what you are describing is wolf behavior, not coyotes. they tend to be more loners and scavengers normally. wtf. maybe they are evolving
Hey Becky.....I’m buying a lot in Palatka Fl,8,276 sq ft,is this big enough to have a chicken coop? How Many chickens /Hens/Roosters would do good in this size lot.
Enjoyed the video..my solution, my great Pyramese, his name is Mighty Quinn..dont mess with his ladies ;)

get a few Ovcharka's. Normaly they defend the flock against wolves, so coyotes is just a snack for them. And they are lovely dogs
how do you believe for one minute that is a secure coop?
5:45 I thought that was Scott yelling from the house or something😂.. I think it's just the rooster😁
rooster sounds happy
Great advice Betsie...have a great day....
Where is Becky located.

Can you use a chain ink fence for a chicken run?
Good advice thank you Becky
Hi I was just wondering if you do what kind of tractor do you have and could you maybe do a video on it
I don't have a tractor. ☀️❤️☀️
We had to MAKE a door at the top of the ladder for our coop, and we close it every night. They can't come down until I open it in the morning.
Becky, have you heard of a (one single) GOOSE for aerial preditors?
I also love this video Becky!
I think you should Cover that big whole you have in your chicken coop, because a coyote, raccoon, etc could dig, or jump over that fence and easily get your chickens.
I'm sure they would if I didn't have my great farm dogs protecting them. ☀️❤️☀️
Fighting over their 2 timing man! lol
Hi Becky, Did you put sand in there?
probally.
I am going to put dig guards around my chicken run and coop to keep out foxes
THANKS FOR SHARING WOW
cheapest and easiest solution go to the pound and get a mean Pitbull ( 2 or 3 if your a good trainer) just don't let it inside the Coop or you're going to have some problems
My coop is almost like yours. Wish I could show you! I'm close to you, I'm in Reddick 😊
As the Egg turns. Chicken drama
It’s real
Several times we've heard coyotes too close. Chucky the truck driving Chihuahua gets out there and barks and tells them they'll find trouble if they come around here. And the coyotes find another place to hunt. He has pinned down possum as big as him. And wild cats don't stand a chance. It's too soon, but we have to replace his buddy who passed away from rattle snake bite. He was a 95 lb lab mix with a gentle soul.
Coyotes kill dogs for jollies. Lost a Great Pyrenees pup last month in my front yard.
What can 5week chick eat besides the starter feed?
I know your little chihuahua alerts to danger but he's dinner to a coyote. Also, I'd recommend a better latch, yours is joke to a coyote.
Jessie Ramos AGREED! A chihuahua should NOT be considered a “livestock” dog. NOT SMART OR GOOD IDEA. the coyotes around me always takes dogs off.
Jessie Ramos do not be an idiot...she knows better than you 2 together....
Diana Cassinelli I don't profess to teach Becky anything, but if you read her comments a lot of
young kids follow her.
My dogs work in a pack, I'm part of that pack if need be. Plus the key is to have a coop that nothing can get into for where ever you live. ☀️❤️☀️
How many chickens do you have? I love your videos :)
Fighting over their two timin man..lol..lol
Can u plz make a video on why my hens won't go out of the hen house - plz help
Something is out there they are afraid of. Is it you? Watch and figure it out. ☀️❤️☀️
I have 5 chickens and they bullied the first one and brake her eggs what should i do
happy productions split them up and put them in a normal size coop and let the other ones in a different coop
happy productions bullying and egg eating are signs of stress, nutritional deficiencies, over crowding and boredom.
thank you
i relly have four chikens and one ruster
Can you make another video about raising chicks in a bunny Hutch because we have a bunny Hutch that we are raising chicks. I am 12 years old and this is new to me. Or could you also just comment and give me some tips please thank you so much and I love your video good job.!
How do you deal with minks? Those are sneaky blood thirsty little ones.
I am in SE Mississippi, and I have a serious problem with raccoons. I've lost 9 chickens in the last year.
Lea Holifield raccoons are one of the worst out here in mass too.
It's very simple, build a better coop. You need to be a better coop designer.☀️❤️☀️
Becky's Homestead designing a coop is difficult depending on your areas and the types of predators you have. Your idea of a coop would be TERRIBLE for his situation and mine.
If the coyotes get on the roof all they have to do is jump down in your run and go right inside because you have the whole side wide open!!!
They come in my yard and try to get the feral kitties. Some times they succeed.
Do you shut them in at night? What about raccoons crawling up that roost? We took a cotton trailer turned it upside down and covered with tin, they have the run of 5 acres during the day. 😝
your a genius
A flat 2foot skirt made of 1" size holes that's plasitic coated mesh. all around is bomb poof !!!
What brand of diatomaceous earth do you use?
What happened to your corgi dog?
Lady the walls surrounding your coupes are to low. Coyotes can EASILY jump a 6 foot fence. Happens here in Southern California often. You best raise your cause walls at least 8 feet.
My cool is closed right at night that's what works here
how see the dog
Electric poultry fencing and a goose 😏
I like doing the live on Wednesday
Nice
I am looking forward to having to deal with bear when I move. As far as I can tell, electric fencing is the only way.
That's why I have dogs.
I know she didn’t just say Joe Rogan
My ears perked up too. I wouldn't have guessed she listens to him but Rogan is so awesome, everyone can tune in.
What happened to Woody?
No disrespect but a coyote would breach your coop before you can say "blow your house down". The front opening of your coop wouldn't stop a small rat.
Electric fence aka fried chicken
Hi Becky love ur videos about your chicken coop wouldn't take a raccoon long to get in with the lick u hav
Huge coyote got 5/6 in 5 days
