TOO CLOSE TO EF4 TORNADO - Inside Debris Cloud in 4K

- Intense, long-track, EF4 tornado between Bennington and Chapman Kansas on May 25, 2016 was on the ground for 90 minutes. I managed several close encounters with this sun lit tornado during it's life including one that was a little too close for comfort. Watch tornado video in 4K. for licensing contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
Earlier this afternoon strong instability under a stout cap set the stage for a couple isolated supercell thunderstorms somewhere in Central Kansas and by 5:30pm a storm was initiating near Salina Kansas. By 5:48 the National Weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for this explosive thunderstorm and at 6:30 I witnessed a long white funnel cloud under a low precipitation base. The storm took a breather for the next 45 minutes or so before suddenly dropping a large cone tornado South of Bennington Kansas in a relatively unpopulated area along the Solomon River.
The tornado grew violent immediately and maintained incredible wind speeds for up to 90 minutes. I was able to position close to this monster for a good portion of it's life and witnessed hellish scenes. Sunsetting light splashing into a debris cloud of whirling plants, dust and structure objects reached a half mile away from the powerhouse condensation funnel in all directions while turbulence waves of crops rocked like an angry sea.
This tornado received an EF4 rating by the NWS. Storm Chaser Brandon Clement also witnessed the tornado and afterward, walked the damage path to document the damage. He reported the worse vehicle damage he's ever witnessed with full sized HD pickups reduced to mangled frames and pieces spread for miles.
"A Freightliner semi was reduced to frame and wheels. 50k pound tractors were pushed across the ground, 30k pound bulldozer was rolled, railroad tracks were bent and moved. Large trees were uprooted, thrown and some found laying out in the middle of pastures hundreds of yards away."
Brandon also reported that this tornado was rated EF4 because it didn't hit any well built structures with anchor bolts. If this tornado had there is no doubt in his or my mind this tornado would have received an EF5. The EF rating scale is a based on damage so if a tornado with winds over 200 mph (EF5 speeds) doesn't hit any structures, then it doesn't receive that rating. Regardless of the rating, 25 homes were damaged or destroyed and remarkably no lives were lost.
Scary fact for tornadoes: If Pecos Hank looks like he is staying still, it means he is coming right towards you

If there was a satellite he should have been looking for it. Of course he is doing the ultimate stupid by recording and driving at the same time. He needs a co rider. Anthony Davis It would be on those people for copying his behavior. they should know not to do this because Hank knows what he’s doing they don’t.
@@Youtubnium You rather overestimate the intelligence of the average fool out there. People who might opportunistically go out and chase a storm one day because they just want to see one once in their life may, on impulse, just decide to go follow along, but not have any real knowledge as to what to watch for and when to run. They would draw upon memories of videos they'd seen as examples of what is plausibly safe, and bad examples like this could get them killed...but if Hank "knows what he's doing", then why is he irresponsibly breaking his own rules and the accepted norms and rules of the stormchasing community? If you're going to put up videos of potentially deadly behavior, I think you have to accept the responsibility to set a good example.
@@anthonydavis9662 Hmmm interesting
Except Hank acknowledged his mistake, and mentions why getting that close is potentially deadly. Even the most seasoned chaser can misjudge the behavior of a storm.

So far so good!
Yep that’s true but I think Hank is always careful and prepared to get out of the danger zones when it’s time to
I've watched a couple of Pecos Hank videos and he seems both cautious about danger and he uses different tools to keep track of his location and he is knowledgeable about how storms form (his instructive videos are very good). I wouldn't want to be near those monsters and I've had more than a couple of near misses where I live, but I place confidence in Pecos Hank to present wonderful tornado footage and explanations about storm formation.

I live in Oklahoma and it still amazes me how something so deadly and destructive can be so beautifully mind blowing.
That's why I've been so mesmerized lately watchin these vids. The absolute unconcerned violent force of nature that it is, is still so incredible. I'm like that chick in the movie, I wanna see. Hoping to find one where I can but best one so far, is the old guy that unfortunately lost his wife, but you see that monster come str8 at you, just like the movies and then it goes black, but the sound is the clincher...that howl is just evil...but the fact that its nature, is what makes it beautiful. It cries and screams and dances and jumps and spins with precision grace, but an unrelenting taste for earth.

Mr. Duncan I wish there had been a warning for the Tornadoes that hit NC in 2017. But they were shrouded with rain and hail. nobody could tell if it was one or not. @@Kasspyr I'm surprised that radar images of the storms didn't show rotation & trigger tornado warnings. Was a tornado watch or severe thunderstorm warning issued before the storms hit?

There's nothing better than finding a YT channel with such good quality videos and content, that you end up going back through older videos.
Keep up the good work Hank, but more so, stay SAFE!
What scares me the most is how many times while binge watching your videos, I’ve thought to myself, and out loud to my husband, mostly concerning the rain wrapped ones, that “I’d never have known that was a tornado, and there’s a better then decent chance I’d have driven right into it.”
Maybe, maaaaaybe, I’d put 2 and 2 together, IF I’d heard the warnings before the point of no return. But, that is a big “if,” as more likely then not, I’d be listening to a road trip playlist, as I don’t listen to the radio ever, and I’d be literally fugged!
Pecos, you have the biggest titanium ones I've ever encountered, sir. That guy honked at you when you went around him and it's like, "Dude, what are you doing? Do you want the shot or not?" You’ve got some major guts. I went to school in the Midwest, from Seattle, where we get no tornados (earthquakes), and some of those amazing storms I saw in the Midwest just shook my world. Humbling as hell and fascinating beyond belief. I had never heard a tornado warning siren until I got to Minnesota, and I remember high tailin’ it to the bathroom, sitting in the tub, with my bike helmet on. No shame here (did I mention I was hugging my stuffed bear, Mick?). I’m from the PNW and I know when I’m out of my depth. The irony is, that I finally saw a funnel cloud, but not in my 5 years in the Midwest, but over a lake, right off my deck, as if it knew I would be there, in Seattle of all places. I called the news, they didn’t believe me, except for one local cable news channel, and they located the hook echo on the radar. It didn’t touch down, but still, an incredible anomaly for Seattle and I got to watch the whole event like a movie in front of me.

I love your poetry, compassion, composure, knowledge and nerves of steel. I've learned so much from your vids. I been fascinated with Tornadoes since I was inside one at a daycare when I was 8. I've never forgotten that churning sound that sounds like being close to a fast moving train. You capture that sound for a few seconds for the first time I've heard since... it takes me right back to it. I was 8, my sister was a baby, at a daycare in Scott AFB in Illinois in the 1980's. It was storming heavy, I was used to bad storms from living there and in Oklahoma in my short life up to the point. Suddenly, the staff rounded us up in the hallway and we were the curl up, facing the wall, covering our heads and neck. Then I heard this deafening noise of a train on tracks churning overhead, it even had a clicking sound. I asked what that was, a lady said, tornado. A boy was in the playroom and was hiding, the window broke.... he screamed, glass hit him. Next thing I know, Mom shows up out of nowhere, rushes to me franticly checking me and my sister all over as she weeps , not a scratch. I look back at the building, the roof was torn off, tho the ceiling was intact. The boy, covered in blood, tho conscious and crying, was lifted into the ambulance. The same tornado hit the commersary and destroyed it, many people hurt. Since then, that tornado did something to me.... I'm utterly fascinated at the same time horrified by them. Part of that twister lives in me.

@@mosaic8360 when you're factor in the tornado is miles away from him. The fact that you can still see its motion means that it's moving pretty damn fast
Damn your brave to get THAT close to a tornado
Also I have a tornado warning right now pray to god I don't get one
You still alive??
That's stupidity, not bravery.
ShibePlanet and he's talking so calmly like wtf

Rule #1 -. Don't Panic
Rule #2. -. Always bring a towel.
Man, that was a beast of a tornado.
The best part of this I think is when he zooms out and you can see the whole mesocyclone rotating, really awesome footage
Mom: Honey, get to cover! There's a tornado!
Me: I smelled it, it doesn't smell like death. We're safe!
*Opens Giant Glass Window*
Me: See, smell it for yourself!
Mom: *gets ejected from the house* Oh yeah true, it actually doesnt smell that bad!
This made me laugh more than it should have😂😂
"I'm to close."
*Stays there and watches tornado*
LOVE YOUR STUFF...earlier this year got to chase my first.... ef0/1 but holy hell was it great.... love your stuff.... i think you are one of the best out there......
Almost got boxed in like a turtle's pecker.
Haha, I'll never forget that line. 😂
5:09 awesome camerawork. Back lit tornado, winds tearing in towards it and shots close in of the rotation at the base. Fantastic
These videos are the reason I'm awake at 5am. Thank you for fueling my insomnia
one of my biggiest fears are tornados...but I find it fascinating and horrible at the same time...I could never be brave enough to be a storm chaser...thank you Pecos Hank for getting all those footage of Tornados...I truly hope one day we can have a better warning system with more advance time to get to safety...
Cheers Art.
Exactly.
Watching that in 4k on a 58" TV, makes me feel like I am watching it out of my car window. I kept waiting to get rained on or feel the wind, lol...
I was watching it on my projector screen. It actually felt like I was crew cast in twister. Lol
5:43: anyone else think how beautiful that looks with the grass moving like the ocean?
I love how you stay so calm when staring at death :D
Do tornadoes actually have a smell to them? And if so what's it like?
Ethan Mooney cloud farts
I wish i could but i cant smell...
Ozone (or O3) is what your smelling it's just oxygen with more oxygen attached to it.
dust and debris
You'll smell things like earth, or in urbanized areas, pine, natural gas, etc. That pine smell is the wood frames of buildings being torn up, and of course pine trees if they're common there.
6:08. That is one of the best shots I’ve seen. That’s a dirty deadly tornado. By dirty I mean she doesn’t care who’s in her way she’s going to get her way regardless. I screen shot this and it my new iMac wallpaper to replace a super cell I put on there a year ago. Mr Pecos Hank. As far as tornadoes go. Your my idol brother. I’m 49 … kinda old to have an idol but been chasing tornados in my imagination since 1979
What if you put a camera n the roof of the car?

Well if you've got a better suggestion, shoot. I need something to keep the bumper up on my shitty project Buick.
Too much rain on the lense
+Paul Dirac-To-VHS Tapes on Quantum Mechanics june 4th still no reply
To sum it up.... its going to Oz
BowlingGlaceon yup
Dang. And I though I was brave to stand out on the front porch during a thunderstorm …
💯😭😂
Should've seen my grandpa today, he stood outside cleaning a cooler outside while the tornado sirens go off.
@@itsnotjosh4062 Absolute madlad. Respect.

I appreciate that you do not use foul language... can't stand when others are freaking out and cussing God etc...
“Runaway time!”
Continues driving towards it
Guess I got to this video a bit late, not sure how that happened! Hank, you are my #1 favorite chaser ever and I have to say that this may be your most impressive tornado! I love how you captured it from so many different angles, really giving us a great visual on how different it can look depending on the direction! I think you got a wee bit close there, I was definitely feeling the adrenaline!

I had a dream like this...but it was darker in my dream, and the howling sound was creepier...it was an unforgettable dream................... 🌌〽😨
*Mrs. Voldemort* same
Yeah, that orange haze is usually the color of the sky but it's lacking a few ropes
I once dreamed of a tornado
My family was eating dinner
It came from the east
It took my older brother
My little brother and I were like, "Yay!"
And then everything was back to normal
The food was there
And sadly my older brother was too
Then another one came from the southwest
Then I woke up
And this was a real dream, too
I think the tornado returned my older brother
Because it didn't want a horrible maniac in its winds
@@mendarisgirl222
Oh goodness, LoL. I found myself both laugh and sympathize to your post. Hope your older brother would be better to you...the tornado in your dream most likely a representation of your hope (of taking him away). Stay safe and healthy, dear...
I always have nightmares about tornados since I’m really scared of them
4:01 Best tornado still ever. Classic meso formation...amazing :)
That blowing grass looked like waves on the ocean during a storm. Beautiful!
Love how good he is with the perception, I would’ve got picked up and thrown in Jersey 😩
I want to do this for a living. I love being scared for my life.
Charles Bordy what makes you "love" it?
@@mochas9249 I imagine the adrenaline rush...
Bungee jumping
too bad because you would not survive a week most likely.
When I’m scared for my life I freeze
I always love watching how indifferent other drivers seem in these video. Like, sometimes it looks like they're heading right into the tornado.
"Yup, way too close." At this point, that's his catch phrase.
I know this video is over a year old and I doubt you'll see this, but in the off chance you do, could you do a video where you explain the anatomy of a tornado? Such as the tendrils and the force that comes from behind the tornado? (You called it something but I can't remember what the technical name was)
I've seen a lot of storm chasing videos and, Hank, you're my favourite because you're so calm while doing it. No screaming, no swearing a lot....just chasing and ocasionally running away with a calm voice ''It's time to go.'' xD
Amazing! Thank you for capturing and sharing this!
Pecos Hank, I love your videos. But be careful, man. I want to watch you for years to come. Don't get dead. x
hetaes lmao
hetaes You really need to talk about that?
You're probably the most respectable chaser I've ever seen on these types of vids. I'm sure you get a thrill from the chase and devastating splendor of nature's fury, but you're also aware of it more than most. You don't only see "great shot!" but also the lives and property in that shot, something a lot of chasers seem to miss, at least in their videos. Knowing your enemy and respecting it's abilities are the sign of a wise warrior.
"this tornado smells like death.."
Not even one second later: *continues driving like: LALALA THIS IS FINE-
Ok
Damn, I was on edge being that close to that tornado, and I’m just watching a recorded video.
Here I am again binging Pecos Hank videos.
Hey Hank have you ever read about the 1997 jarrel TX tornado? I read that most of the metrologists that analyzed the damage, particularly to the Double Creek estates area, agreed that it was the most intense damage they had ever seen.
Coleman Jones one of the worst ever definitely. Worst since Waco Texas in 1953!
