Perhaps the bar to be a police officer should be set higher and create a system that mirrors the level of training and qualifications of firefighter recruitment before one ever gets a badge, let alone a firearm. How difficult can it be.

You're so right. Any old clown who's inclined to act out on his violent tendencies can become a cop as long as they somehow avoid a felony prior to applying. I think for starters there should be intense and thorough psychological testing. You'd be surprised how many meat heads you could avoid giving a badge and a gun if they made this simple change. If you're asked the right questions it can be very difficult to hide that you're fundamentally unfit

The chances of that are slim and none. If he DOESN'T get probation, which he's eligible for, based on a jury recommendation (as long as he doesn't get a sentence recommendation of 10+ years), the State of Texas will declare him a "high security risk", ask the feds to house him, and he'll get moved to a non-threatening federal yard (medium-security, or less) somewhere, and possibly even be given a fake WITSEC name to do time under. Think I'm wrong? Ask yourself: when was the last time you heard of a convicted ex-cop (or ex-fed, ex-Congressman, ex-judge, ex-guard, etc.) getting killed in prison?

I didn't listen to the testimony in the trial. But maybe what happened here was a convergence of unfortunate circumstances and the cop should not be blamed at all (nor should the homeowner who was killed).
    1. Neighbor sees the door opened and no activity in the house. A possible break-in, or the occupant in trouble, and calls 911.
    2. Closest cop to the scene is not in uniform, but is on duty, takes the call and goes over to the house.
    3. Homeowner sees a stranger entering the house, has no idea it is a cop who was called, and pulls a gun.
    4. Cop sees an armed person confront him. In his mind that could have been the burglar the call was made for.
    5. Cops are trained to shoot if a person points a gun at them; there's no time for a warning.
