Thanks for pointing out all the implications that Freddy was a child molester. The remake’s claim to fame was making Freddy explicitly a sexual predator, but I felt this overt text really spoiled the implied horror of the original. He comes off as charismatic at times, but when you see deeper… that’s when the true horror reveals itself.

    • @dyrr836
      @dyrr836 2 года назад +32

It makes him even scarier IMO. In the real world people who do evil things like that often use their charisma to try and avoid accountability. Ted Bundy is a good example, or any other murderer/sexual predator who presents an affable persona in court, or in the interrogation room or even to their would be victims. It adds somewhat of a disturbing subtext to the massive popularity Freddy obtained in the 80s.

In fairness the original script included the that he was a chomo (not just Nancy's mom hinting at it). They had to remove it to get the MPAA R, specifically because of the satanic panic and the McMartin Preschool Trial. It was very blatantly depicted in the remake that's not mentioned in this video, or by anyone else for that matter (for good reason).

Freddy scares me more than the other villains because in some ways, you can’t avoid him.
You can avoid going to summer camp and meeting Jason Vorhees. You can avoid Texas backcountry so you won’t run into Leatherface. You can avoid seeing Cenobites by not touching the sacred box. You can even (arguably) avoid Michael Myers by not getting in his way. Or cutting his head off with an ax, either way works.
But you can’t avoid sleep. Sleep is the most important function of the human body. Without sleep, our brains would turn to mush and we would become the closest thing to zombies before dying. Nor can you avoid dreaming. The fact that a supernatural entity cannot only enter your dreams but also harm you in them is the scariest thing I can imagine.

About Freddy's violence (sort of). It is worth noting that painful feelings, such as depression, humiliation, self-hatred and fear, to give some examples, can be overcome by anger. Whatever its root, anger is a psychological power supply that will only be magnified if combined with a sense of entitlement or a belief that the anger is justified. In a psychotic mind what constitutes "justification" or a reasonable chain of cause and affect, can easily be beyond the ability of the sane to understand. Still, discarding everything else, hate-fuelled anger is a much more powerful driver of the will and determination of a person than love could ever hope to be. Quite literally, Freddy needs his hate and anger in order to survive.

This was a great breakdown of Freddie, would love to see you Syndrome from the Incredibles.

    • @Eres_Nyx1154

I think that line was meant to say he wanted to be a hero because of how hood he was with gadgetry, but people like the Parr family who were born with heroic powers got all the attention. And because of how hurt he was by Bob/Mr. Incredible's rejection, he internalized that and devised a plan to sell his inventions and give overlooked people like himself the chance to be the heroes they couldn't be. Because if everyone's super, real superheroes don't really cut it anymore.

In my head cannon the other nuns and priests probably thought about straight up killing baby Freddy or just allowing him to die. But they had a Frollo moment and figured that their immortal soul is more important than being rid of him so they were obligated to take care of him. But they probably did the bare minimum and stayed far away from him or worse antagonized the other children to start bullying him and he started acting out. Then either Mr. Underwood probably either adducted him or the orphanage just gave Freddy to a drunk pimp just to be rid of him and celebrated that he was gone for good. And since Mr. Underwood was a pimp in the comics little Freddy would have been scared by a lot of the shit that was probably going on around him. If not Mr. Underwood only adopted him just to make a quick buck off of sick fucks that wanted to take advantage of little Freddy. Which probably turned him into the monster that he became. But that's just my head cannon though.

Robert says Freddy represents neglect of the parents and Wes said he was sins of parents being visited on the children. These kids almost had to fight him without adults and alone. Freddy is when your parents throw you to the wolf's. The kids had to face a evil they did not make. All alone at first and later with each other. Seems the parents were almost secondary antagonist. I agree with Robert. He represents the neglect from bad parents and the consequences from their neglect. Jason and Michael Myers are more forces of nature. Freddy is personal. His evil is personal and out to get you.

I have always said that the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were about bad parenting. When you look at the parents in these movies, they are awful! Drunk, absent, abusive in their own right or just apathetic to their kids' visions of Freddy, most of these parents end up having something about them that directly foreshadows their child's demise.
The fact that these same parents killed Freddy themselves and yet call their own children crazy for claiming to see him in their dreams was absolutely mind boggling. Your kid is being haunted by the spirit of the guy you helped to kill and you won't believe them. That is denial on another kind of level.

That's an interesting idea, but in Nightmare 6, it was mentioned that they're basically immortal. So if they lose one agent of evil, like Freddy, they can always find another. Personally, I didn't care for that story line-- it felt like a loose end that had to be tied up so people would stop asking questions.
In death, Freddy became a Word of Mouth ghost story that kids were still afraid of. Just like the Candyman. The more stock they put in his name, the easier it was for him to make a comeback.

In the Freddy vs Jason debates that happened around the movie, people always argued about who is more evil, Freddy or Jason. My answer was always easily, without hesitation, Freddy, and the why is exactly what you nailed down:
Freddy was "born evil" with the background and mental disorders that come with the type of father he probably had on a genetic level as well as the trauma surrounding his household. He grew into an absolute sociopath.
Jason was dead before he could grow up into adulthood. He was cruelly taunted for his ugly features, but otherwise was an innocent kid, who fell victim to adult guardians who neglected their duties to have hookups. Jason was a victim, everything he's done has been because of his mother or lashing out against the people he feels are responsible for her death
