Tony Hawk did more than any other person to promote skateboarding and get it the recognition it deserves, and next year in Tokyo it will become an Olympic sport. The man is in his 50s and still skates (very well), and his son Riley is a beast too. Tony has dedicated nearly his entire life to skateboarding, and I'm glad he was able to make some good money in the process. I personally would like to give a sincere thank you to Tony Hawk for his dedication to this great sport.

The Doritos commercial is very cool. The idea that he's constantly skating - even in the shower - and that punchline at the end with the shopping cart is perfect.
Well the thing is selling out is going against your beliefs and principles for money. So when most people point at someone for selling out, they’re really not selling out. Selling out would be if someone who didn’t like smoking, did a commercial for a cigarette company. But if you think Doritos are cool, then there is literally nothing wrong with being paid to promote them.
Yep, and anyone who called him a sellout would have gladly taken the same opportunities and commercial deals as he did. If Doritos came to me and offered me a ton of money hell yes I am taking that deal. I'd be the sellout because I don't eat Doritos lol but financial stability is really nice to have.
exactly. If it goes against what you believe in, or it’s just something you don’t like at all, that’s what I would call selling out. If you’re doing it because it’s something you actually like, that’s not selling out. that’s just doing what you love, while having the added benefit of earning some extra cash.
The fact that all these contained real skating and he had stories behind them that werent just "oh yeah they gave me a lot of money to show up here" is great
To be fair, most of the money is finding its way to building skateparks around the country or at least helping to get them funded. People look at it as selling out to sell Bagel Bites and Doritos, but I see it as using mega corporations' advertising budget to add visibility to skateboarding and ultimately fund more skateparks to grow it. Skateboarding doesn't have to be some hidden activity, as long as the ads depict real skateboarding and not William Spencer nonsense or mongo pushing longboarding I'm fine with it. I'd rather Tony Hawk be in an ad than some poser that's been skateboarding for a week trying to represent it to the world.
