I did this on the ground at the avionics shop and had an external calibrated compass. “Swung” my wet compass, and calibrated both AI/DG and got a note in the logbook too.
She really didn't clarify till the end that she was simply taxiing around on the ground to different headings. (Note that the airspeed indicators were zero and no bank appeared on the attitude indicator.) One would presumably use their wet compass as the authoritative indicator (with correction card corrections applied.)

Just so I am clear can the cal be done on the ground or does it have to be done in the air?
I originally did this on the compass rose on the tarmac. Is it better to do it in the air?
