I never thought you’d analyse Conor, he’s one of the best vocalists of our generation but Nothing But Thieves are still waaayyy under appreciated! Glad to see you were blessed with his godly vocals
Connor Mason is a master class on how to be a rock vocalist in this modern age. That live version of If I get High makes me tear up every damn time. Absolute perfection.
Yes!!! Conor Mason is, without question, one of the greatest voices of this generation -- if not all-time. I love to see Nothing But Thieves getting some recognition! Thanks Chris! I never clicked on a video so fast!
Matthew, I'm curious where you're from? My maiden name is Neary and I'm in the most eastern part of Canada (Nfld). Not only would I be amazed and thrilled that another Neary was a fan of Conor Mason, but that it's another Newfoundlander! Could it be???
This lesson is so well done! Conor's voice is impeccably angelic and velvety, almost like a warm hug in audio form. There's a lot of richness there: like you said, there's a bit of Buckley, Yorke and Bono there, but he's also very much his own vocalist, thanks to his classical training and childhood diet of blues and soul. Nothing But Thieves songs are so hard to sing not because they're melodic gymnastics but technically because of Conor's flawless transitions between the registers and the subtle nuances that makes his vocals very him, such as an airy breath here, a brief belt there and those barely there melismatic runs peppered here and there. But most importantly the way Conor moves the audience emotionally with his stage presence-not only live but also as a voice in the studio-that emotional energy is simply unmatchable. Thank you for this lesson, Chris, and for doing so well in showing us mortals the ropes to Conor's divine vocals!
It makes me so happy to see others appreciating the beautiful talent Connor has, not to mention the while band of Nothing But Thieves. I've been listening for years and have always enjoyed hearing his angelic voice.
New singer for me. He is really singing the way the great Motown and R&B Greats did. I hear very much operatic leanings. He really holding back the breath through appoggio.
*sees title and laughs because it's impossible to sound as good as Conor* Really enjoyed this video though, it was incredibly interesting! And it's so nice to see NBT starting to get some of the recognition they deserve.
I’d love to hear you cover some of his belting. His belts in Amsterdam have such a rich and velvety and screamy sound all at the same time, it’s scary.
Even though Conor Mason is one of my favorite vocalists, I gotta praise your vocals too Chris. I was quite amazed (again) how well you analyze and mimic his vocals and make it sound so good! Your videos are so valuable to all singers here and it's amazing to see how far your own voice can stretch while experimenting the vocals. Please keep up the great work and thanks a lot again!
That's an amazing analysis, and Conor's one of the greatest vocalists I've heard. Stopped me in my tracks the first time I head his voice on the radio.
Love Conor!! NBT is amazing and his voice is like no other. His control and power is something I’ve been working on for a while. Still got a long way to go🤣
I clicked on this because Im trying to find out if there's an explanation as to why I'm so obsessed with conors voice 😂😂 very interesting!! Thanks for making this video 😀👍
Thank you Chris loved this one really good to see something I suggested among a whole a lot of other people get analyzed you nailed but cant wait for part 2 awesome stuff
Wow, Chris this was an incredible lesson. So well broken down, I'm really impressed at how you explain things practically. Just subscribed, looking forward to watching more of your vids!
As a beginner, two things strike me. 1. I need to listen and feel what I'm hearing with a lot more discernment and perception for the subtleties and nuances. 2. I'm a very long way from this level of elegant, eloquent expression ... sigh. Beautiful work Chris.
I've never commented in any video in my life and this is the first one because it woth, I see all your videos and I really know that I will enjoy this. Conor Mason, one of my favourite singer due his beautiful voice and performance in live as studio. Thanks Chris.
Man, loved the video as always! I’m a big fan of head voice - chest voice transitioning without knowing (didn’t have any singing knowledge before) and now, after 2 years of singing lessons your videos are golden gems to absorb styles and understand how to achieve those sounds. Keep rocking!
Definitely the amazingly great surprise of the day. It has been so interesting, i could have been listening to you for a long time still ! Thanks Chris, lot of love from a french vocal coach student ! One day I'll come to America to learn about singing the way you guys do it, and i hope i'll meet you to talk about it! Your passion, hard work and kindness are contagious!
Wow I learned a little bit of vocal technique a few years ago and definitely one never knows how much knowledge one misses. You got a new subscriber, not only you're really good at explaining and showing examples but also now you've given me more understanding of why I'm in love with Conor's voice. Beautiful!
Lots of good bits here, that yawn approach to mixed voice is already helping me out!I think I hear Billy Corgan doing this kind of “resonance switching” a lot too.
This video is hilarious! I know nothing about singing, but I can recognise great voices - so happy Conor is getting more popularity. You too, Chris, are rocking it!
If someone told me 5 years ago that a road to high vocal artistry includes making controlled noises ranging from breathy lovers through calling babies in head voice to yawning murder victim on one breath I'd laugh in their face. Not laughing now tho. I could watch it for hours but I get too mind blown. BRB, looking for my jaw on the floor.
one of my favourite singers and bands going right now! this is great! Not sure if you look to your comments sections for inspiration but I reckon you'd have an absolute blast analysing Vessel from Sleep Token like this
I'll bet anything this man is a huge Jeff Buckley fan...I hear a lot of the Buckley style here (along with Bono and others)....but he does an amazing job!
Great stuff as always man! I really like that aspect of saving the voice in certain notes. I'm starting to feel that most of our heroes does that, specially live. We always get the feeling that they are screaming their lungs out but I think that's not true. I just find it difficult to notice that and with your expertise we can definitely hear those transitions. I know I sound like a broken record but can you please do a Richie Kotzen video. People say he sounds like Cornell but I think he's more on the bluesy side with more dynamics and stuff. I'd love to hear you talking about him. Thanks for the amazing content! Looking forward to see the feedbacks on Friday! Cheers from Brazil!
I'd love to see a video about Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon. Even though he doesn't do super high notes he has a very interesting sound to him. His voice has such a cool squeaky grit to it like if he's had some cords sickness before and it's damaged now. I wonder if it's possible to imitate and learn something from him. In the song Charmer he does this cool scream I've never heard anywhere else and I wonder if it's done in a healthy way and how it works.
Amazing video as usual, sorry I only see it now ! Maybe you could dive quite a bit into Puggy’s discography ? They’re a Belgian band (though none of the members are actually Belgian, the singer’s English, the drummer is Swedish and the bassist is French) and are therefore criminally underrated, and I feel like you’d definitely have some interesting points to pick up on in Matthew Irons’ voice. Can’t wait to see more analysis of yours anyways ! :)
chris these videos are incredible! I cant seem to get power in this kind of mix tho. everytime i push my larynx goes up and it sounds shitty, is there any trick to get this kind of mix powerful? just the yawning?
It's a careful balance of managing your support and blending the "yawn" sensation with your facial resonance! Have you checked out my mixed voice course yet? go to www.mymusicalvoice.com to see if it might be something you'd want to do
I'm not sure I quite understand the question... do you mean for this video? Singing in the style of this artist? Or do you mean in a more general sense? Like "how to you work on your tone and versatility in general?"
@@chrisliepe the second thing sounds more like what im trying to do. Changing your voice(tone and overall sound) completely by changing the shape of your vocal cords/larynx. I think it might be possible because im still growing.

Ya they deserve more "press" for sure!!
Hey boss I know this comment is 2 years old, but yeah you're right he's the best. Glad I'm seeing other people who agree.
So underrated ! Saw them live in October and they were phenomenal

So glad! Thank you!

Conor Mason is a very special talent and it's a privilege to listen to him sing. And that's coming from a die-hard Buckley fan. Great video.
We know to sing like Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell, and now we will sing like Conor Mason. These three analysis will help me vocally so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Your knowledge and teaching style is incredible, plus your voice is seriously beautiful! Thanks for the info!
How to Nothing But Thieves, Muse and Radiohead all in one vid, amazing job Chris

Awesome! For me Conor Mason is all about that wide-ass vibrato he does all the tame
Cool. Thanks for the upload. Clears up a lot of questions I had about Connors immense vocals. You sound just like Jeff Buckley! Awesome!

How the fuck did I miss this, can't believe you did this!! We love you Chris
aw man i wished you analysed the song impossible by nbt but nonetheless, perfect tutorial🤩
If only I’d learn to sing when I was younger. It’s hard to motivate yourself to learn to sing when you are much more self-conscious 😤
Awesome 😊😊😊

Thanks for sharing this. Interesting. Definitely, I prefer shorter videos, with this format.

he's a huge Jeff Buckley fan and loves Thom Yorke too !
How to sing like Daniel Heinman would be epic.
Should've included Lover, Please Stay live ❤❤❤
Conor has the most amazing voice .... been obsessed with NBT for years ♥️ check out his voice on 'I'm not made by design' it's AMAZING 😍
Never heard of this band but they remind me of Muse a little, mainly the singer
