What do you do with that? What an amazing arrangement and performance. It goes from bluegrass to Pink Floyd "when the mood all changed". Kasey Chambers is known as a (very good) Country and Western singer - I think she blew her audience away with this. She feels the song because she's lived it. For years the Australian music industry treated her like shit because she was "not pretty enough." This performance says "Fuck you, I'm gonna show you what I'm made of!"

100%! Not Pretty Enough was her thumb to nose song to the record companies! Her first album The Captain was amazing and got massive kudos but the record companies shunned it and the songs released weren’t played on commercial radio. Wasn’t until she release Not Pretty Enough that they stood up and took notice. Kasey still went her own way and showed ‘‘em what’s what with awards out the kazoo and induction in the ARIA Hall of Fame as the youngest inductee ever. ❤😂

This has got to be the best cover of all time. She is a Bluegrass/Country singer in Australia. She took a 20 year old rap song, tore it completely up, & made it her motherfucking own!!! I have just watched it a dozen times tonight, & each time I have got goosebumps & tears flowing. The anguish in this performance is on another level! Her early career mirrored Eminem's which is why she chose this song. Her song, Am I Not Pretty Enough was her big fuck you to the radio stations who would not play her songs. Ironically, it became her first hit, played on every radio station in the country. Youngest woman to be inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. Now you understand why she feels this song?
The slide guitar is her father, Bill Chambers. Founder of the family band, The Dead Ringer Band, she & her brother joined as teenagers. Yes its is a banjo. She plays a multitude of instruments

That slide guitar player you noticed, is her dear old Dad. Must be one of the most proud fathers on the planet. The whole band is something special.

The words as the same as Eminem's, the lyrical rhythm is also the same, it's the speed and the emotional impact she's changed. I love how she's so willing to bare her heart on stage. I love Eminem's lyrics too . . . especially when I can understand them. He's like a modern day Dylan sometimes. Like our host, my ear's not tuned to the speed and cadence. Plus, I'm old and my brain's slow.
Check this out, if you can. Great lyrics. It's not like anything I've ever seen or heard before. It's a little rappy and a lot not. It's like his own genre. Very hard to describe but pretty easy to understand what's being said. It's by a guy named Ren who I just stumbled across and am now proselytizing. ruclips.net/video/s_nc1IVoMxc/видео.html

Proves that songwriting & arrangement are everything. Give even a half decent performer a foundation & they both shine. She’s more than half decent 😉 & this reminds me a lot of intimate shows I’ve seen of members of the Carter/Cash family. Talk about the energy of being in the audience for those kinds of magical performances, when they’re trying out material tucked as far away from Nashville as one can reasonably get. Don’t know how I got so lucky, considering I’d never call myself a new wave of country/folk fan (or much of a rap fan, although there’s one album in my top 10 of all time). 🎶💜

Thanks for doing this one! This gives me chills every single time I hear it. Kasey going from that resigned, laid back approach early in the song to the fighting emotion later is beyond powerful! 💪🏼 Kasey is very under appreciated and needs to be recognised more on an international scale! Kasey is a master of storytelling, conveying lyrics and emotion! She is an icon in the Australian music industry, mostly for country and folk, but has her own style and is never afraid to delve into something outside the box. She is just getting better as she gets older. I really hope that Eminem has seen this and appreciates that his song and lyrics were re-imagined in such a spectacular way. I guess he has as he did give her permission to upload to Spotify etc. Would really like to hear what he thought about it though. Where else would you see head-banging with a banjo, pedal steel guitar and rock band together? Kasey started her solo commercial career around the same time as Eminem and she was a big fan of his music. From what I understand, Kasey spent lockdown playing around with some of her favourite songs and this version of Lose Yourself is the result. Brilliant! Kasey has spent her whole solo career bucking the constraints of the record companies and always gone her way. She made it to the top in Aussie music anyway with many awards, becoming the youngest ever ARIA Hall of Fame recipient. BTW….how was that for breath and vocal control? Not to mention the awesome arrangement. ❤ Also, that was Kasey’s Dad, Bill, on the steel guitar. Full kudos to Eminem for his songwriting. Personally, the reason Kasey’s version affects me so much is all down to the fact that she did lose herself in the music, the moment during this performance. She is a true blue Aussie who will leave her soul bared on stage every single time. ❤

Badass reaction Jeff to a badass cover. The original song is world renowned and could never have another better version. Thus said Tracey made this song her own and I listen to this version more than the original. Definitely not kicking Eminem down it's just that I also prefer singers over rappers.

I fn hate listening to country and western music. Childhood shit. But I can appreciate the poetry of the words. If you don't listen you are more lost I think.
I love Kacey for who she is, and her music.

Like you Jeff I never listened to much rap I had heard Eminem's song but never really heard the lyrics. I must say he had a horrific childhood. Kasey slowly telling the story then we get the full emotion of it.. but then POW the anger kicks in. And that band were just brilliant. Her dad was on the slide guitar in the cowboy hat. I'm sure Eminem has heard this as some have said he has. Great reaction Jeff so glad you reacted to this. Kasey is just brilliant! I'll leave a link for you to one of her original songs. Pull up Eminem's lyrics to Lose Yourself so you get an idea of what she is singing. Liked and subbed.

I think part of the problem to us old folks is rap can just sound like a rumble and jumble of sound to our warn out ears. My daughter at 13 loves it Ime but at 63 cant hear it like she does. I knew this song back in the early 2000 but heard more of the words with Kaseys' version.

Get the lyrics from Eminem's original. Kasey sticks to it like shiit on a blanket. By listening to Kasey's rendition of this, I've grown quite some respect for Eminem's writing.

I agree. If anyone can influence anyone’s opinion on rap, Ren can. He consistently shows he is a genius in any genre. His musicality, his wordplay, his singing, his clarity of diction (except when he accelerates to 10x speed lol), his self taught ability on so many instruments his mastery of the production process, his videography, every song he puts out is unique in its own right.
All despite (or because of?) the tragedies he has endured in his own life. He is a visionary who is focused on the rights and wrongs of this crazy world and doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff through his talent and through his art. Well worth checking out, a necessity I would say, but it is some rabbit hole to step into :)
