I’m pretty sure Alyssa and my wife are on the same page 😁 thanks for another great road trip video, hopefully the SC network is upgraded and able to handle the holiday load by the time my cybertruck is delivered... I’ll be doing a lot of holiday road trips in it.
Sweet mother of goodness. I have a Model 3 performance that I bought new a couple months ago and just completed an AL to TX back to AL road trip that was 1500 miles long. 2 people, probably 200+lbs of luggage, rain, and 80+mph on roads (TX has fast speed limits), and I got 250-260 miles on a charge at highway speeds over the course of the trip. The trip was 95%+ highway. ~268 wh/mile average. How are you over 300+ wh/mi? Wow. I do run tire pressure at 48PSI, but shouldn’t be that much difference. I like seeing the traffic cones. I like knowing my car sees them in roadwork zones and it has helped me out when reversing near them in multiple scenarios. It does not use any more computational power to display them. Autopilot has to see them and process their existence whether or not they’re displayed. The few pixels shown on the center screen aren’t using *any* more power than if they were not displayed. They are vector-based images, which, in the case of the center display, means that if they are not shown, they’re just replaced with a vector image of a dark spot. In other words, the blank space around the car on each side of the lane is a vector image in the same way that the traffic cone display is, so to the computer a vector image is displayed whether or not it appears as a cone. The autopilot system still sees and processes the cone whether or not it’s displayed for the car to avoid them and that is what uses the computational power.
May I ask what you mean by highway speeds. Following the posted speed limit or? Kyle has a radar detector mounted in his windshield for a reason I think. Also 48psi is certainly a bit high over the 42-45 recommend range but I understand that. I wouldn't want to do that is this bad rain though.

Collin it’s not all about planning and there’s little to worry about. The video is just trying to give you a very thorough explanation of what and why they do things. And you may wish to take the same trip differently. It’s also one of the worst times to travel on one of the worst routes. The vast majority of journeys you wouldn’t think twice. Love your rant about the missing charging capacity, but I guess you're looking too narrow. They obviously have trouble to ramp up the production of the V3 components, but have already a good running production of the V2 components. They are installing V3 superchargers, for example in the trans canada highway, which had zero superchargers before. I think the issue with building new locations is, you need to find a place, rent the space, get proper electrical connections for like 1 MW installed by the grid company and then you can start doing the construction work. Extending a V1 supercharger a bit on the other hand doesn't require any of the steps before, but offer the same amenities for the drivers. Since you don't install an electrical connection exactly to the needs you can probably get away to draw some more power from the grid. This way you can get more throughput to the supercharger network without a long lead time. I think they currently install as fast as they can, and the paperwork and third party companies have trouble to keep up the pace - since money isn't really an issue, after so many new cars have been sold.
I have been BINGING your EV roadtrip videos this weekend! Great channel I just stumbled upon. Funniest part of this one was you asking Alyssa to explain curbside pickup, lol. Hard to imagine a pre-pandemic world in which that was an oddity. I'm also so interested in the charging speeds. Intriguing that you could've likely done this trip faster in an ID.4 or something given the Tesla infrastructure and crowds in this area rarely had you pulling even 125. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
The I-95 corridor is all V2. V1 are the early unlit stalls that provide about 110 kW. I don’t think there are any V1 stalls remaining in the US. Savannah was originally V1 back in the day. It’s definitely due for a V3 upgrade or even an expansion now. V2 got an upgrade last year increasing speed from 120 kW to 150 kW on almost all with a few exceptions.
Nice video! My 2018 P3D (PUP) made to to Ocala Florida from a 100% charge at Savannah. I had 6% SoC remaining when I arrived at the Ocala Florida Supercharger. I’m going to see how my range compares making the same run in April with my new 19” Tesla Gemini wheels with PS4S on them. Oh and you should have your Wh/mi tab open and give efficiency updates during your return trip! Enjoy your vacation and have a safe trip back.
I hit a lot of these same chargers last summer on a trip from New Jersey to Orlando. I agree, the Savannah airport is a nice place to get out of the heat and get a Starbucks.
@Car Fli I always found the white in our original Model S, and our Current Model X to be nice, but with that screen they'd make it easy to change the colors unlike other cars I've been in
I have the M3P+ with the PUO as well. My efficiency was in the 300-350 wh/m range. Put the Fast Wheels EV01+ wheels on, with the aero inserts, it will improve range by 10%. Would love to see you do a video about that and compare. The ride is smoother with 18" on, and acceleration is faster too. If you want even more range, use the Michelin Energy Saver tires and make it the roadtrip wheel/tire combo! (18x8.5, 35mm and 70mm fits with no spacers on the PUO)
@@OutofSpecMotoring Awesome, cant wait! These are the ones (www.canadawheels.ca/fast-wheels/ev01-plus-titanium-w179562) with the PS4S tires that are developed w tesla (the ones with foam and TO on the outside). Would be interesting to see how much the Michelin Energy Saver would increase the efficiency compared with the PS4S TO and the regular PS4S on these already very efficient wheels on a roadtrip!
Can US Teslas not use standard CCS public chargers? Here in the UK, Teslas can charge on any chargers, so, you can skip the supercharger queue. European Teslas have type 2/CCS sockets.
How is the tyre pressure? That can affect range greatly. Send some of that rain here Down Under, everythings either extremely dry and hot (40C+/104F+) or on fire
Thanks for the video. I drive a similar route from Greensboro NC to Hilton Head. I’m curious about the Columbia supercharger. That’s about the halfway point. Unfortunately, I am usually doing this trip during the busy holidays so I feel you pain with the terrible traffic. Waiting for the Cybertruck...
V3 is great when it works. We got a V3 in Nashville just before Thanksgiving which was very welcome for those travelling through here. In the intervening period a cabinet has failed twice cutting the station down to four. Seems Tesla have some revisions to make before they put too many more V3's out there.
I go through Florence, SC a few times a year on the way to my parents on the NC coast (from ATL)...I too am amazed at how unused it is. The location is right off 95, and I have never seen more than about 5 stalls used. Now, one you didn't visit on this trip (but mentioned the town) is in Greenville, SC. That only has 8, and it is frequently very full.
Thanks for the trip video. I have a Model Y reservation and drive from Central Florida to Asheville, NC often so the southern I-95 experience is most enlightening. Hoping for rapid expansion of V3 Superchargers over the next year!
Somewhere I started hating these Maps and Estimated times to arrival. It just gives me anxiety. Gone are the days when you just hop into a car and drive to your destination, taking in whatever comes your way. Traffic, Crashes, Bad weather etc etc.
Just want to thank Kyle for making these EV road trip videos. I do alot of long distance road trips and I see that EV's still have a long way to go before they can meet ICE cars' efficiency on time/distance. Perhaps in 5 years or so.
I think faster charging (V3) and charging curves to allow for fast charging to 80% are to important things. We’ll see but I agree, we are a few years away from it really not taking much longer than ICE
I am also from triangle area and traveled back from FL to RDU on 1/1/2020, supercharges at Kingsland and Savannah were packed with teslas, though everybody is chill.
Great video Kyle and Alyssa. I am impressed you got this video up so quickly. I have driven down from Toronto to FL on 3 occasions last year. It is nice to see how these SC are holding up. Tomorrow I am going to fly down but initially I was up to drive as I find the experience to be not as bad as people think. I have an older MS so I won't be able to experience the higher charge rates. You are lucky to have a newer car.
The last time I did that drive for Christmas (from VA), the bottom half of NC and ALL of SC was a traffic jam. The last 40 miles of SC took 2 hours. ALL of that needs to be 3 lanes.
Ever try RainX on the front window to save power for the wipers? I do and do not own a Tesla yet. We are waiting until one of our cars is used up. (10 years at least hopefully). More importantly, I wonder if you could put RainX on the cameras to keep them working in weather? I have not tried it on the cameras on my Pilot, but I will.
The power draw is tiny for the wipers compared to everything else but yes, I just haven’t detailed this car and done my usual new car process. Been on the go too much!
@@OutofSpecMotoring not that you down south would have the issue, but up north the RainX is great for getting ice and snow off as well. (I do not work for them, just love not using my wipers.)
So glad I skimmed through this video! This just convinced me to NOT get a Tesla. Could only imagine what this trip would be like with my two toddlers...yikes! Thanks for sharing!
the traffic cones displayed on the screen is realistically not a bad idea because it tells the computer when it travelling through a potential construction zone. This basically tells the car to travel carefully when its in autopilot. Also it helps people that cant see very well while travelling at night.
Mine did the same 'freaking out' a few times Dec24 on just a 60km run to a newish 250Kw SC. The weather was foggy and the wipers went ballistic. Yet the windshield was clear. The sky looked a monotone grey so that's likely why AP flipped out. I am starting to think the AI needs more visualisations or to coordinate better with the radar & all cameras for a consensus on the weather.
I’ve been making videos like these for my Leaf over here in Japan since 2014 and I have to admit your wife is way more fun to watch than mine. My wife hates it when I make these kind of videos and she lets me know every time I start filming, but your wife is a way better sport and even adds a lot of personality to your videos. Because I have my children in the car and RUclips is barking at me about the new rules coming in January I pretty much privatized my whole library of vids. I wish you a happy new year and I hope your channel has even more success next year!
Come on Cybertrk and V3 can't get here fast enough. One thing I observed from your video and it reenforced my go-to travel plan is to travel at night and sleep in the day like working the night shift, less competition for SC stalls and less traffic on the road.
I only fly first class or drive an ICEV. Flying does not add carbon if you utilize scheduled commercial flights. If you charge at night you are burning coal which is worse than driving an efficient ICEV. The batteries are very bad for the environment as well.
Great video! I left TX to NC a week ago ~2,609 miles round trip. Did you have any problems on the highway with the cross wind making the autopilot ping-pong a little staying in the lane? My avg speed was 75 mph (I did get autopilot-jailed several times for >90 mph when not paying attention) and I was avg 295 wh/mi. I have a M3 long range.
SEem like absurd number of crashes given the distance they covered. What it is about this stretch? People not use to highway driving? Not leaving big enough gaps?
Why do I like watching road trips :) Probably cus I'm in the dreary UK and you can everywhere in a day! Managed 60 mph average yesterday over 100 miles and saw 270 wh/mi so you put me off the P+ maybe the LR AWD instead next.
So compared to the range of the LR AWD, any regrets with the performance? It’d be cool to know how much faster you think these road trips would be with the LR AWD!
The issue with AP in the rain is probably due to condensation. At least on your recording you can see condensation patterns were your wipers meet. The area which is hit by both wipers and therefore wiped more often is clearer. A fogged up windscreen would drive me nuts, how can you drive without being bothered by it? Turn the front windscreen defroster on, this should activate the ap camera housing heater as well.
Have you seen the Björn Nyland Videos? He is doing a lot of range testing and assumes that the M3 Performance is not having a big dissadvantage in efficenzy against LR.
ROAD TRIP!! More road trips, please!!! BRING ALYSSA!!!! She’s very pretty and quite funny. Why did you go from a model x to a model 3? You know you are quite crazy, right? The both of you!! You’re pretty lucky that she goes on these long trips with you. Do you have a regular job, or is RUclips your regular job? I think it’s kinda scary that you are familiar with all these highways and charging stations!
Did you stop at the Kingsland supercharger on the 29th? I think I was charging next to you for a bit that morning. We did the trip from D.C. to Clearwater, FL and luckily never had to wait in any lines.
Skipped Kingsland yesterday - ended up staying overnight in Jacksonville (we left late after visiting the Naples zoo) and shot from there to Santee and then up
I have the same issue but worse. When I send it to leave at 8 AM it is done at 4:30 AM at 100%. I sent a bug report and backed it down to 95 if I need it at 100%
Oh, you probably have no CCS chargers, that you can use with the M3? We do have it in Europe. And it doesn't even need an adapter. Tesla Superchargers have been upgraded to support the type 2 but also CCS with diffrent cable on the same stall.

Your sweetheart is awake for far more of the trip than my own
You’re patient people, I always take my ICE vehicle on long trips.
They are young and adventurous, plus all the views and ad revenue doesn't hurt.
How is the tyre pressure? That can affect range greatly.
Send some of that rain here Down Under, everythings either extremely dry and hot (40C+/104F+) or on fire
Just watching this a year later, and it's funny seeing you have to explain what curbside pickup is. Wouldn't have to do that now!
That’s what it sounds like. Typical Tesla releasing an unfinished project lol
😂😂 the road trips with you two are hilarious! Safe travels!
Is it just me, or are Kyle and Alyssa the Tesla community version Leonard and Penny?
THANK YOU! I HAVE SAID THIS MANY TIMES AND NOBODY AGREES
The look she gave him about the rain and the battery 😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the trip video. I have a Model Y reservation and drive from Central Florida to Asheville, NC often so the southern I-95 experience is most enlightening. Hoping for rapid expansion of V3 Superchargers over the next year!
Somewhere I started hating these Maps and Estimated times to arrival. It just gives me anxiety. Gone are the days when you just hop into a car and drive to your destination, taking in whatever comes your way. Traffic, Crashes, Bad weather etc etc.
the perfect reason to own a Tesla and have a perfect Christmas eve
My son inlaw made the trip on Dec 23. From Santee to Savannah took 4+ hours. The 95 Pinch in SC was in play and an accident with fatality.
Oh..V 3 is in Palm Bay/West Melbourne as of Dec 31
I was incorrect regarding Palm Bay. sorry
Try turtlewax rain x or similar on the windscreen! I don't need to run the wipers at all at highway speeds, rain just rolls off the car.
1:15 "the depart app finished at 6 while I set it at 8". Yep, common bug, does that all the time on my model S so I gave up on it.
Outstanding video. Alyssa is a doll.
That Tesla EVSE changer has some major electrical code violations...
twcz3 lick it
So glad I skimmed through this video!
"Isn't that annoying" .... "yes" ...got a love it
I’ve been making videos like these for my Leaf over here in Japan since 2014 and I have to admit your wife is way more fun to watch than mine.
Wife: "14 hours? We're flying instead!"
Husband: "Do you even carbon footprint bro?"
Yeah, because driving a Tesla is somehow making that all better.
@@seanfyodorovich5230 Whatever your position is on BEV's, any car is better than flying if you're concerned about your carbon footprint.
1 1/2 hrs tops by plane $75 dollar ticket
I only fly first class or drive an ICEV. Flying does not add carbon if you utilize scheduled commercial flights. If you charge at night you are burning coal which is worse than driving an efficient ICEV. The batteries are very bad for the environment as well.
Brian the disinformation campaign is working on you...
damn 14 hours? ... I drove from FL to NYC in that amount of time. I really wanna get a Tesla but it looks like road trips REALLY take a long time
It was the traffic that added 90% of the time, not the charging
Great video! I left TX to NC a week ago ~2,609 miles round trip. Did you have any problems on the highway with the cross wind making the autopilot ping-pong a little staying in the lane? My avg speed was 75 mph (I did get autopilot-jailed several times for >90 mph when not paying attention) and I was avg 295 wh/mi. I have a M3 long range.
I’ve been on some crazy windy roads blowing autopilot around. It ping pongs but handles it pretty well. Glad you had a good trip!
I've driven HOURS through blizzard conditions on holidays and not, and never seen close to this many accidents.
Same. It was definitely insane
Nice holiday road trip in the rain video. Very informative.
SEem like absurd number of crashes given the distance they covered. What it is about this stretch? People not use to highway driving? Not leaving big enough gaps?
Ah... I know that I95 pain. My parents are in Naples and the Xmas drive is pure hell sometimes!
Why do I like watching road trips :) Probably cus I'm in the dreary UK and you can everywhere in a day! Managed 60 mph average yesterday over 100 miles and saw 270 wh/mi so you put me off the P+ maybe the LR AWD instead next.
Please make a video on your police scanner and why you chose it. Im looking at getting one for my model 3 and I wanted to here your response
Just wait till every one has Tesla, do people have patience to wait in line to charge their car?
Was fun to watch as we don't have Superchargers in Hawaii yet and can't really do road trips here except for the Big Island!
I hate how the Model 3 windshield have the issue of smudging when it rains. From what I've heard this seems to be a problem on Model 3s.
So compared to the range of the LR AWD, any regrets with the performance? It’d be cool to know how much faster you think these road trips would be with the LR AWD!
The LR RWD is the best road tripper!
You seem always so chilled. Did you hit your left temple
U may not use the chargers in Vegas but we do. How many Teslas have been sold in North Carolina? U should have a commensurate number of chargers.
Awesome road trip. Thanks.
Did you stop at the Kingsland supercharger on the 29th? I think I was charging next to you for a bit that morning. We did the trip from D.C. to Clearwater, FL and luckily never had to wait in any lines.
Skipped Kingsland yesterday - ended up staying overnight in Jacksonville (we left late after visiting the Naples zoo) and shot from there to Santee and then up
Why on earth doesn't Tesla put covers over the charging stalls? You have them at gas stations.
You earned yourself a subscribe from me! You made me want to get a tesla model 3 next year.
No CCS for any Tesla in North America 😩
Thank you sharing your trip and tips for charging. I do not own an EV yet. Can't wait till I get my cybertruck!
I love these roadtrip videos guys, keep it up. Your wife is really funny too, she is as crazy as my wife..
@@alyssazupan3944 He should do something about that asap.
Alyssa Zupan haha.. Well Christmas time is the perfect time to do it right? 😂
