  • An immortal game of a six-time U.S. Champion Walter Browne. In a well-known position Browne sank into deep thought. After thinking for 45 minutes he came up with a fantastic sacrifice, which signaled the beginning of a deadly attack.

Wonderful game : imaginative and precise. Is the game taken from his book The Stress of Chess: My Life, Career and 101 Best Games?

Yes, but I first saw it in the book called "Chess World Title Contenders and their Styles". You can also find it in Soltis's book called "The United States Chess Championship, 1845-1996".

Fischer even as a child was slaughtering Bisguier (13 times in a row), and would probably have done even better vs. Browne +1974 who successfully avoided ever playing RJF as a US citizen, and would have been remembered as the zero-time U.S. Champion if Fischer had continued to defend his title which he had won every time he played in it (8 times in a row). At the time this game was played, Walter Browne was F.I.D.E. ranked #57 in the world, and could be U.S. Champion only because he wasn't playing against Fischer and the U.S. had such a pathetically weak field of players to compete against like Bisguier who at best was rated around 2450 ELO in 1974. Playing over Browne's greatest games with Stockfish will reveal that many of his sacrifices were fantastic alright, fantastically lucky. That B-h6 move is easy to find, and most GM today could calculate that idea in a couple of minutes, not taking anywhere near 45 minutes!

Browne played Fischer in 1970. The result was a draw.

@@rafidl5556 Yeah that is correct. According to Wikipedia that draw was one of Walter Browne's greatest chess achievement.
