The Genius Physics Of Propeller Cars

- So I was messing around with a flying car in BeamNG Drive, and me being me, I decided to remove the wings and attempt driving it using the propeller as the method of propulsion. Turns out it is actually better than the cars we have today.

I am a fan of propeller cars
Car with propeller go nyoom with a constant *brrrrrrr*
You just span my view about them around
Fan and propeller
Isn’t it redundant?
Your vids man make me smile always 😂
I see what you did there.
Just a reminder that even with a propeller, the car has limited traction while cornering. But anyway, I love that the quality of your videos are just getting better every time!
Angling the prop cleverly could actually improve cornering ability if done right
The solution is actually pretty simple
Top mounted propeller for increased downforce
Optional side mounted propellers for extra cornering performance

@@MuYe the awnser is always propellers. Propellers can always solve all your problems
@@MuYe more big brane then brane
Realistically speaking, a very heavy propeller (steel, perhaps, since weight isn't even remotely as big of a concern here as on aircraft) could be a very effective flywheel to preserve energy whilst breaking. Just stop the throttle, and hold on breaks applied to the wheels and it should still be spinning reasonably fast. Also, accelerating the engine with the break on wouldn't really be all that damaging here either. Genuinely does have some interesting benefits beyond the memes and what is shown here.
Some of the problems I could see it having is breaking could be tough due to having to slow down the propeller and the wheels most likely, though that’s a lesser problem in comparison to the gusts of air one of those would output. Larger cars would be almost entirely impractical, and even with smaller models the wind they would produce would mess with pedestrians and other propeller cars alike.
@@djdewwott8540 Both of you are taking this so seriously and are so dumb
A variable pitch propeller would take care of all of this in a much simpler way, if you reduce the blade angle the propeller will start windmilling, basically working as a giant airbrake, this is how you would use engine braking in a car like this. If you need even more braking just keep changing the blade angle and rev up the engine to get reverse thrust.
This are things that airplanes do to slow down in the air and when landing respectively
@@djdewwott8540even a small 100hp general aviation plane on idle throws quite lot of wind backwards, a more powerful engine working hard would easily throw a person to the ground, Newton's 3rd law, you have to move a lot of air very fast if you want to accelerate a 1000+kg car.
Also there is the problem that it may not be a great idea to have giant blades spinning at 1000rpm anywhere near pedestrians
You could also have "regenerative" breaking by spinning the propeller (the opposite direction) juts like on an electric car. Except that doesn't put gas back in your tank lol
MuYe: creates a propeller powered pigeon to solve the lack of traction
Also MuYe: crashes 30 times because of no traction
Honestly if the prop was on the front and pulled the car forward that would probably be fixed.

AN MASSIVE SPOILER ATTACHED TO IT'S REAR SUSPENSION
Because, if it's attached on the chassis, it will lift the front, but, if it's attached in the main axis of the suspension, it will force the entire rear axle to the ground.
There's a Miata that runs at the 24 hours of lemons (yes that's correct) with the rear wing of a crop duster mounted upside down, attached directly to the rear axle housing. It makes like 200lbs of downforce at 70mph and none of it ever goes through the suspension.

It's also consuming double the fuel. Oh, and what about when you want to change directions, from forward to reverse? Your propeller has to slow all the way down to 0RPM, and then speed back up to movement speed. Not to mention the danger of having an open propeller. All the vehicle accidents? Even more damage done with propellers. Probably some of the reasons why it never caught on, it just wasn't practical. Powered wheels (so far) are the most efficient solution for our purposes.

Interesting fact about planes:
The Cessna 172, which began production in 1955, is still in production today as essentially the same airframe with only minor differences, such as a back window added in 1963, and an upgraded interior. It is still the most popular plane in production.
Yeah nah, cars have certainly developed faster than planes. Well, in recent history anyway. :)
I think he forgot about development of tires as well, what we have now are 10 times better than what we have decades ago.
Still a fun vid.
another fun fact. the russians have the 172 beat with the AN-2, a *BI*plane built since 1948, meant for STOL and cargo ferrying in remote regions, whose airframe has not been modified since...
and it's running a radial engine, too!
@@comethiburs2326 Haha yeah, that's my favourite plane! It's what my PFP is :)
a lot of GA (read: small) airplanes run on ancient technology but the airliners, definitely not
Eh. Not 10x better. The main point of a tire is traction. So given other variables like cost and life expectancy are equal, the relevant metric to judge tires on is their friction coefficient. Which has improved but certainly not 10x even since the first rubber tires.
There have been racecars that used propellers. They had fans that iirc pulled air from under the car and blew it out the back creating insane downforce even at slow speeds.

It's been a ton of days that these humans think that I actually can understand them but all I hear is screaming.
Everyday it looks like the sky is getting more tainted and the vehicle we're using seems like not having a prosper future, first of all I gotta say that a good part of all the crushed and broken components are made faulty by me, I didn't intend to break this machine but in the first place I don't know why this guys put me to the wheel, i never knew how to drive. I tho also removed the vehicle's honk because I thoughly stand on a statement of mine, "don't honk we are monk".
One thing that surely stays stafe is the supply of bananajuice left in the trunk, I crearly stated that "This juice must not be touched orelse I will drive you to death". I'm pretty sure they didn't get my message but I made myself clear with some screams while pointing to my sweet juice.
The nights are cold, I just hope zunzan tomorrow will come back with the food supply we need for surviving because otherwise we will die of starving... the light of hope is still on the horizon.
Few issues I saw with propeller car:
- no clutch for propeller - in case when it's needed to be turned off, it won't work (can be solved with basic transmittion)
- limited traction while turning (can be solved with back-wheel steering, spherical tyres or propeller with turning mechanism)
- massive winds in cities
- too much negative momenthum on Y axis (if a car gets stopped from front, it will tip over)
- large fuel consumption
- propeller is wide and prone to damage
- lack of cargo space in this design
But it would be great for e.g. sports car. As always great video!
I love that Pablo’s subtitles don’t match the Spanish at all in the subs he’s just threatening u but in the Spanish he’s just talking about eating potato chips and eating quesadillas

I swear around 2:00 it's the same song they used for the show How It's Made on Discovery 🤣. Amazing video though!
9:45 the Jetsons have arrived
I can see a couple flaws in this design
1. Noise. Car engines are already loud enough, then adding the propeller whipping around. Imagine some compensator reving the equivalent of a biplane outside your house at 3 in the morning
2. Safety. A large, fast moving propeller is going to hurt or kill people when out in the open
3. Wind. The third time you get your groceries blown out of your hands by one of these passing by is when you decide to commit homicide
4. Steering. The single propeller, as Muye's multiple jump cuts have shown, does nothing for steering, which still relies on the wheels. You know, the whole thing the propeller is meant to be a fix for
6:29 when the AI is more skilled than the player
How it's made is awesome!! I instantly recognized the music
but tbh braking would still be the same and you could equally spin out when braking on wet road. +would be better if the propeller was in the front so you would have better traction of front wheels (cuz its pulling instead of pushing the car) edit: i saw your method of braking but that's really not a good idea since it would take a huggge while to change the direction of the propeller while its going at 10k rpm
If anyone is wondering about the efficacy of propeller driven cars then in short it would have tons of problems, they do exist and most consist of go-cart-esque vehicles and are fun, but that is for a few reasons: 1 they are meant to be driven in environments without other vehicles, its a massive safety hazard. 2 they don't restrict airflow, a vehicle like this with a push prop would be operating in a disturbed air flow environment, it is why you don't see lots of push prop planes, they're very loud and cause lots of vibration, and because it is operating in the "dirty air" of a car, the air is not smooth, think of a semi truck passing by you, lots of disturbed air that would make the prop inefficient and shake violently. 3 Quickly reversing an engine to perform breaking is not possible at moderate or high speeds. the engine has to slow, stop, and reverse, which is a slow process, imagine using having to brake, stop and reverse your car to a high rev to start reversing, yes, it doesn't care about terrain, but also not about time, because it's slow... so... yeah, that pedestrian is hienz ketchup in your window. Props stay in the Air, or on water in the case of fan boats, not on cars
Just wait until Muye discovers propeller torque and its effects.
Especially at low speeds, increasing throttle will cause the car to both turn and roll left; you may also experience asymmetrical thrust. Using a constant-speed (it adjusts its angle in order to keep engine RPM stable, almost like a CVT) contra-rotating (basically 2 propellers in front of each other spinning in different directions) propeller would solve or at least reduce the issues I mentioned, as well as allow you to stay in the powerband permanently without the reliability issues at higher power outputs that a CVT can have - back in WW2, constant speed props could harness the power of 1000, 2000, 3000hp engines even.
Also more planes in beamNG when
Innovation requires a problem to be solved. If there's no problem to be solved then we simply create new problems.
I hate to admit it but you're a genius.

What mods are you used for the four wheeled version? 🤔
Because the "Fliegon" mod which available in the repository only comes with a 3 wheeled version.
12:36 The other (big) problem is: completely no reverse speed ‒ I mean, the propeller maybe spins in reverse, but the car itself ain't gonna move at all! 😐 So, which is the better: normal or propeller cars? 💭
Only at 6:42. Acceleration will be different on different surfaces. A small propeller plane taxing on concrete will only have to run at 750RPM while using 1300RPM on grass
We need fuel efficiency data, also anyone near this thing would get blown over. Not sure if you been on a prop boat but those fans aren't like this video game... they're extremely loud and powerful. Other vehicles and pedestrians would be in an immense amount of danger around this thing.
