These Forgotten Baseball Cards Could Be A Gold Mine!

- Baseball cards are built on history and hype. Hype burns our quickly and history takes time to happen. This leaves a window between vintage and ultra modern that is commonly forgotten. In this video I discuss the most recent forgotten era with less sets, print runs, parallels, and better players. In my opinion this forgotten era of baseball cards is a gold mine!
Absolutely agree. Going to start hoarding this era. So many great cards you can get for just a couple dollars.
Joey Votto is underrated. I believe many aren't doing their DD and just buying off the hype. Once they pay attention to the stats they'll become wiser at buying players.
I agree but only to a point. I think he's a 3rd or 4th ballot HOFer but chicks dig the long ball as does the hobby. His name just doesn't carry the same weight as Albert Pujols or even a Frank Thomas.
What card to buy of him ?
I totally agree about Votto.
I pulled some good stuff out of 2011 Flagship. Freeman Diamond Anniv., Goldschmidt Cognac, several Gold players now in the HOF. I miss those days pulling several great parallels
Just picked up a 2006 Topps Chrome Bonds Red Refractor PSA pop 2---love those cards....good show!
I couldn’t agree more! I’ve been telling all these new collectors they are printing so many more cards over the last few years it’s getting crazy. I got back into the hobby in 2014 and as soon as I saw the insanity of early 2020 I new it was only going to get worse seeing a Zion silver PSA 10 selling for as much as a Jordan rookie PSA 9 was mind boggling lol. I just went through my topps 2018 chrome box I put away a few years ago and found some more Acuna’s so it’s a happy day, now I just have to find my Betts RC’s and I’ll be good 😊
Scottie, great content , thanks for the work you did and presented here
2008 Upper Deck Goudey ! Awesome SPs in that set.
U do it again Scottie. U continue to inform collectors about the positives and negative’s of collecting cards. Thank you for the advice.
Great stuff Scottie. Agree 100%
This video was awesome thanks brother 🙏 🙌
So true... great info⚡✌️
Think you’re right on the money with your analysis.
Another fun video Scott!
Thanks MikeO!
70s and 90s RCs are my favorites to collect because of the overprinting of the 80s. 2010s are appealing and Basketball is my #1 to collect. Those 80s cards was a good decade to collect.
Scottie! Stop giving away all the secrets..... in all seriousness I have been collecting this era for years and watching these ultra modern cards head straight down while this era steadily rises. Keep up the good work.
Great vid thank you for taking the time and knowledge !
It’s dope that you’re breaking down the odds but it discourages new collectors when you compare it to previous years. It’s like we’re trying to play the lotto.
Greinke is so undervalued it should be considered a crime against humanity.
Which of his cards 🤔 to buy i think he's dam good.
@@ziggyc4474 Greinke rookies are a little confusing I think we need one of Scotts rookie ranking show but I personally like his Etopps rookie, its short printed to 999 and a cool looking card! 👌
He’s whack
@@IeldudeI he's super consistent for a modern day pitcher, Alot of great pitchers peak and fall off, Greinke is headed to cooperstown despite losing almost 2 years to mental illness nothin wack about that
@@mickey-eq5vw alright man sorry, also idk how old you are but if you’re old and still spell a lot like this ~~~> (alot) then double sorry for you bro.
Topps just this year in 2022 Series 1 made a "Downtown" style insert called Home Field Advantage. Very cool-looking cards. I pulled a Juan Soto from a blaster box.
Paul Goldschmidt - most underrated rookie cards. You can buy his rookie autos for 20$
I've started stacking Arenado and Goldschmidt rookies this past year!
How will their value increase if it hasn’t by this point?
@@pete5691 when people realize his Hof career. Goldy has been the quietest Hof in recent memory and playing for the dbacks for so many years also hurt.
HEYYYYY quiet down ! Been scoping up a few of these past year. Guess i can forget about it now ! All good great content
I also like to collect the players from 2000-2014 because I grew up watching them.
When I ask people for these players, they never have them lol. Only prospects, young guys or HOFer's
Great breakdown
Man absolutely fantastic job as always!! I started collecting Ichiro in 2010 and remember paying what I thought were great prices for things. You can still finds deals but that window is closing fast!!
Totally agree!!
Excellent video. Great content. I agree with your thinking on this era.
I’m so glad for this video. Anytime I go looking for cards I gravitate to anything from the mid 90’s to about 2016. First off, I wasn’t collecting from the early 2000’s until 2016, but also, before seeing this video I knew there were so many fewer of these cards. My opinion is it must have been a lot more lonely collecting during those years before the boom, but also, so many cool cards that you might have that a lot of other current collectors do not have. Great video and great information! Seriously, thank you for covering this topic
I feel like you took the words right out of my mouth. This has been my thinking now for a while. I loved this video!
Videos are so damn good. Great info…
PSA better have built a Wander Franco Base Building. Otherwise, say hello to the 2022 PSA backlog!
This video was awesome! Just was talking to my buddy about some of these guys and how I’m trying to build up around them, people my age remember watching these guys while playing little league or a bit after
What about 94-2000 inserts!? Those are rare as hell!!! Probably the most rare and true era of cards! I’d love to see a video on that for an investment. That’s what I collect
Image variations are my favorite for some reason.. something about it being a rarer than normal card, but it still has the standard base theme of that year and nothing fancy or showy. Maybe its cause you have to know its a PV to recognize the value rather than some super shiny foul chrome or your usually stick on auto.
Same. SPs are my favorite. Working on getting all the yordan sps right now
@@Brian-di1hq i pulled a William Contreras photo variation today,, and strangely the photo isnt that great. Usually its something epic like Indias, my fav pv, losing his helmet sliding into base. But his series 2 vari is him from behind in batting practice.. cant see his face and the warm up hes wearing doesnt even look look from behind.. gotta say my least fav so far. Looks like one of those panini no brand poses haha
Dude flagship Photo variations are my jam!! I have 5 trout Gatorade bath cards
@@geewhiz23 even if its autograph series that have the different image.. like this Nootbar Gypsy Queen I snagged recently. I spat on last years GQ cause it was way off my plate.. but this years art and theme is sooo good. Got that nootbar rookie auto and every auto has a different pic for them.. and its my fav card i've ever had Id say. Maybe yhey nailed the nootbar, his sig does look good, but I want mote GQ autos this year BAD!
I found a rookie verlander card at my parents old house!
Your views are so spot on. New collectors only seem to see and think about what they see on a Wal Mart shelf.
I know this is a little off topic but Jerry Rice's 1986 Topps rookie only has 50 PSA 10s and has made the price of those wax box chase jump though the roof, If I had my head on straight prior to 2010 I would had my PSA 10 Topps Rice rookie being it was more affordable to chase the product back then, PSA 10s of this card are now rivaling the legendary Fleer Michael Jordan rookie in selling prices
This is a great video. Really appreciate your knowledge. So, basically...don't buy anything after 2014 lol.
Mookie is a lock… but I am biased as well.
My latest purchase: 2001 Bowman Gold Pujols RC in PSA 9. POP: 122 (50 higher). How was this card $315? 🤷🏼♂️
Great video
It’s so funny you mention this since I just started buying cheap wax to rip looking for rare Verlander cards. Great fun, hunting for super low pop cards
Thank you so much that was solid information. Makes me want to go buy some cards
Totally agree
i thought i was alone in my praise
70% or my budget goes into 1986 - 2005. Still like Trout, Mookie, Soto, etc, but I tend to focus on the guys I grew up watching. Nothing against pulling a low #ed parallel of some young new player, but no comparison to pulling a Griffey Jr '93 or '94 Finest Refractor; at least for me anyways.
Anyways, great video as always Scott!
I agree! I love pulling griffey cards still in the new stuff lol
Great vid and great information!
Realy cool video
Most of my favorite cards I own are from that era. My Miggy is a recent buy as I wanted to make sure I got it before he hit 3000. Verlander I've had since 2005. In football, I bought a Stafford right before the season started, which worked out well (pop 236, 144 10s). Calvin Johnson was a recent buy as well (pop 123, five 10s - 2007s is a tough grade). None are graded yet, but I plan to eventually.
I know this is just Detroit, but there are definitely some gems from that era regardless of team/sport. For sure worth looking into!
Panini sitting here watching with select diecuts in every color of the rainbow and not to mention #'d cards in premier, concourse, club level and field level out of /299, 3 /199, 2 /149, /129, 3 /99, /75, 3 /49, /25, /10, /8, /5, /2, /1
Multiple brands didn't keep print runs down. People not buying anything kept print runs down
My view was that multiple brands releasing product lowered the demand for the respective companies' product which in turn made it so each company printed less as they were cannibalizing each other's sales. The goal of a company is to meet supply and demand so if there are competitors then I imagine that the demand is not as high. Just my thoughts though. Thanks for watching!
One of your best!
Great content Scottie. I have been in on the Topps UK stuff the last few years. Compared to flagship you get 4-5 numbered per box. Despite parallel dilution serial numbered cards rule the game and getting 4-5 parallels to 99 or less per box at 80% the cost of flagship to good to pass up
I don't comment on youtube much but this is a great, informative video. You produce awesome content, brother.
Thank you Aaron, I appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching the channel!
Great video. To your point I picked up raw Maurer and, Felix Hernandez rookies for like a couple bucks each.
Kind of off-topic but they need to do a documentary on jabs family
How do we know how many was printed when tops never divulges how many cards they printed
Forgotten years are the 90s that was Mass production in the 90s
Cool video….I am a Votto super collector with almost 800 unique cards…I got lucky and invested in his rookies and prospects about 4-5 yrs ago and have seen some big increases
Love the thought you put into these videos brother. I know you can't put everyone on the list of great players from 2000-2014 but I think Jimmy Rollins could be on your list. He is a potential HOFer. He also has very few autograph cards on ebay
Verlander and Scherzer are the class of the era, card prices don’t reflect that.
The baseball cards you talk about through the years 2018-2019
As always, the best researched, most informative, clearest presented sports card Vlog. Carlos Correa?
freddie's going to have a real shot at 3000 hits. I'm not taking anything away from Goldy, but their career numbers are very similar and freddie is 2 years younger. Freddie has never had a bad season in his career, same for Goldy. He's put up some of the best numbers in the game over his last 7 seasons. Def not a hall of famer if he retires today, but I'd be surprised if he didn't get in when his career is done.
great video! crazy how undervalued Utley is, I couldnt agree more, im done collecting new product except the occasional prospect and ssp, i been done and just realizing it now, waste of money and i like the look of earlier cards alot better
It’s crazy I was looking through my cards from when I was a kid and found that exact Albert Pujols gold rookie in great condition been thinking about sending it to PSA
Kinda bummed to not see Roy Halladay on that Hall of Fame list.
agree 100%
Jimmy rollins? Will get in
This should have reduced down to the 2000 to 2010 era because there were no colored parallels to discuss about.
As a matter of fact, that 2000-10 era may be more valuable in the long term. It's already showing with Pujols, Ichiro and Cabrera.
How did Altuve cheat? It’s been proven that he got pissed when he heard trash can banging so they never did it for him. Please school me if I’m incorrect. Great channel.
AS always great video Scott! I love some of these picks. I think you know I collect modern and vintage...and the "in between". I have been focusing on the "next wave of vintage" - refractors of Griffey, Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez etc. Crazy one to me is Pujols...and I do not have a single card of his...YET. I know his very rare stuff is pricey but his TC Traded psa9 (pop 650+) can be had for like $400! His counting stats and accolades are insane and comparable to some of the VERY best ballplayers of all-time. 679 HRs (3rd on my list , right behind Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth since I do not counting ARod and Bonds ;-) 3x MVP, 3.3k hits, 99WAR. Not to mention he is close to being the only player in history to get 700 doubles and 700 HRs. His problem, and I think you mentioned this in a episode last yr, he is at the twilight of his career so the hobby moved on off him years ago and is focusing on the new guys, but it all comes full circle. Smart investors/collectors buy now while everyone is focused on these modern guys who they are hoping accomplish what Pujols already has ;-)
The kershaw rookie is also a short print. I sold that card for $80 two years ago, mainly cuz they’re really hard to find.
So I have a question for you regarding your mookie betts rainbow. I currently have the us301 debut rainbow, minus the platinum 1 of 1. Do you feel having the rainbow greatly raises the price of the set or just whatever individual cards go for? I'm thinking of selling and trying to figure out a price. ( everything is a 10 with the exception of pink at an 8).
Can someone pleas explain to me , so is the meaning of this Video to tell us older boxes are more worth than newer ones ??
The goal of this video was to highlight all the pros that exist in the baseball card collecting world for the years of 2000-2014. People focus on vintage or ultra modern but forget the great singles and products from the 2000-2014 era. That was my goal in the video at least.
@@scottiebcards2354 oh okay haha because I’m torn apart from buying older to newer cards and I’m still debating after watching lol
The baseball cards box sets through 2018-2019 easy fine some box sets through the years 90-91 easy find them but do you go down logo baseball shop those year cards hard to find a year through 2000-2022
Votto and Greinke 2002 Bowman Chromes are great buys imo
Damn ... I thought I hit fast forward when trying to keep up with him talking.
Haha sorry Mark. There was a lot to cover and didn’t want to make the video too long. I’ll slow down next video. Thanks for watching!
Definitely hidden gems here...just has not caught on since it's that limbo era where players are still.playing and the appreciation has not grabbed the investor/collector
Lol u should see what wanders cards from series 1 are doing already and it hasnt even released yet
Junk wax era all over again
Nailed it.... now the secret is out .... uggg. Lol
Earned my subscription. Lol
Don't agree with degroom since he can't pitch innings which to me equals not a hof. Being great for 100 ip a year doesn't mean hof, but that's my 2 cents
Agree with everything else.... love the pujols
I’ve been buying up the rookies I find in this era for great prices. I still buy current product as well but prefer hof and rc’s. I definitely prospect but stay to raw and buy a few. I don’t go all in and there’s no way I would pay z450,000 for a player who has never made the majors. I’ve seen way to many can’t miss players never sniff the show.
I bought a Verlander bowman draft chrome gold refractor back in 2005 for $20
I got it graded last year SGC 9 (I think it’s the only one they’ve graded)
No idea how much it’s worth now.
But it’s true print runs were much smaller and and the pops for that era will be scarce.
Glad I've been buying joey vottos gold rookie cards.
I believe these kinds of hobbies will soon become a thing of the past. collecting with probably die with millennial's.
💯
There is no way all those Cognac were pulled from one box, case maybe, but not box.
The video is on jabs family channel. Go look up 2011 Topps update hobby box jabs family. I intentionally picked his video because it is so easy to find. There are also other hobby box breaks out there and they are the same pull rates. Thanks!
Cognacs were super easy because Topps included all 3 series plus the sp cards in the Update product, same with the Hope Diamond parallels; so there were over 1,000 cards in the set distributed in the product. Jumbo packs came with several Cognac parallels per pack. I opened 100 cases that year like many years and had several full complete sets.
It’ll be interesting to see over the years all of those boxes of 2021 cards that will get discovered. It’ll be the new junk wax. 2020- whenever this stops. Prepare for a major dip in the hobby again.
Nolan Arenado is probably the most under rated player in BB, this guy belts 30+hrs and 100+RBIs every year with the exception of the Covid half season in 2020 plus 9 straight gold gloves. He does this consistently. He's led the NL in RBIs and HRs. No one has done that. Not Trout; Harper, Betts, Yelich, Freeman, Machado......no one. His stats are better than Harpers and in some categories better than Trout yet he gets no love or publicity from the hobby or the media. Look at his stats! Compare them to Trout and Harper, you might be surprised. By the way, I'm a Yankee fan.
MLB NBA & NFL thought the trading card market was diluted by so many companies but it actually gave us more choices and forced companies to produce quality products. Instead we ended up with which ever company that won the rights over producing and flooding the trading card market. Panini's quality control is a major proof of how much they care of what they put out since they gave no competition in NBA & NFL. Upper Deck was one of the most innovative companies and they were just thrown to the side in all of this!
its no longer a hobby, its a full blown business...... not sure who you are trying to kid
Just a head's up on the "rookie manipulation," Topps is not the one that makes this decision, but rather MLBPA. They took over the "cutoff" date for rookies, which used to be around July 4th, but it was moved up to June a few years back for various reasons. This is part of MLBPA agreement with card companies, hence why you also don't see Panini releasing rookies cards of these rookies until the following year as well, only "prospect" cards.
There are various reasons this is done, but ultimately MLPBA approves all checklists of products and the rookies that are allowed to be included for a given year.
Overall it looks good I just wish I started back collecting that early instead of starting back 2019.
One thing that drives me crazy are these guaranteed hit cases that are 3 or 5 grand. They come in a briefcase looking case. I saw a video where some guy had his kid opening the case and honestly it seemed like a massive buildup and then feigned excited with whoever that was there saying “oh thats a good card” etc, however these were new and unique/limited cards, so first off how could you even know its a good card and second they are basing that opinion off the fact that the card company is saying this is a good card. Only the market decides that! So “insert card company” prints a few cards, slaps a 1/5 mark on it, calls it a hit because they say so and charges several thousand for it. Seems crazy to me.
You saying Topps is not doing downtown cards didnt age well haha
Trevor Story 1st Bowman's FTW!
Do you think Topps/ now Fanatics will lower print runs, products, and how many parallels there are in the future? Only about 1/3 of the way through the video so far (so maybe it's answered later) but interested to hear what you think might come our way in the future!
I wouldn't say Molina is not getting any hobby love. His Topps base RC is over $500 in a PSA 10!
I agree on all points
1) great era to invest in
2) new print runs are out of control especially with the multitude of parallels.
3) strange that new stars and prospects are worth more than proven HOF or potential HOF. when you look at a lot of 'similar' players from previous eras, they aren't worth that much. before some of the negative news (2021-05), I bought a Playoff Marshawn Lynch Jersey RC /50 for 14$. One of the best RB of all time 14$ numbered to 50. You see hot prospect running back numbered RCs selling for over 1000$. I'm like seriously... odds are its not going to hold...
Strangely enough, junk wax era and old modern cards are much more attractive. you know which cards to go for, they have limited number of high grade cards available, and proven themselves
Mess with the bull you get the horns . Your mine bender
