I dedicate this truely jewel of my private collection - and never seen before - document to ONEGIN65. This recital took place in the 'Palau de la musica' in may 1999. Please note that this fabulous rendition was actually the last of the 6 'encore' that the divine Renée granted to her audience on that memorable occasion !! This was the first time Renée was confronting this utterly difficult and 'connaiseur' audience ... and you can see and hear their response to her !!! I remember vividly that hours after the end of the concert los 'aficcionados' continued to sing and shout like crazy in the streets aroud the house ... I hope that Renée will not blame me to share this unforgettable moment with all of you there !... she of course has a copy of the recording, and knowing her generosity and kindness, I feel pretty confident that she will graciously forgive me ...
In order to optimize your experience and as a mark of respect for the art of the singers I produced subtitles in Italien only, Italian/English Italian/French AND ITALIAN/RUSSIAN FOR MY SPECIAL FRIEND AND MOST DEVOTED FAN OF RENNE JULIA FROM MOSCOW : you can activate/disactivate this option with the icon on the bottom-line and chose which translation you prefer to see (or none) with th parameter icon. I always thought that having the possibility to see BOTH the original text and a translation in our native language was the best way to fully appreciate an opera performance ... it requires a lot of time for the initial "time stamping" of the original language, but with the help of IA, I found a way to construct and include the translations in a much more feasible and less time consuming way ... if you find some improvements that could be done in the translation into your native language, please feel free to comment ... . If you would like another language, please let me know too and I will do my best to add it ...
I know nothing about opera singing, but I have been listening to many singers performing this aria on youtube. My favourites include Arteta and Kiri Te Kanawa. But this is the first and only one which has brought me to tears. Wonderful!

This remarkable performance by Miss F. surpasses even her own fine CD recording of the same aria. It has that "edginess" and energy that only comes with the presence of a live audience. I have heard every soprano who was ever born claw her way through this difficult piece but this glorious rendition, IMO, is unsurpassed in the way it projects the passion demanded by the lyric. I can understand why you treasure this "jewel". Thanks for sharing it.

Light touch! Lovely. I didn't know if she could pull it off! This is a heavy voice, and it is very hard to do those soft, high notes! Brava indeed!
I first saw Renée in the theater in 1991 as the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro. And I’ve been a fan ever since. I even got to see her again just a few months ago with the NY Philharmonic, singing popular and art songs.

She's out of this world.
I wouldn't want to be without Fleming's version here. It's quite spectacular and fully the equal of Ms. Price, who would be the first to applaud her younger colleague. These are both special performances. Price saving this her entire career. Angela Gheorghiu also gave special performances of this aria both live and on record. Other fine performances include Pilar Lorengar, Mirella Freni, Anna Moffo (her complete recording set the standard) and if one looks very carefully here, there is a divine performance live sung by the under-appreciated Pamela Armstrong during a run of performances at the New York City Opera that is fully the equal of all the great sopranos who sang this wonderful aria. Her voice had wonderful body and rang throughout the house with a fullness that was astonishing. And let's not forget Kiri Te Kanawa and Montserrat Caballe. I couldn't possibly be without any of them. Leontyne's was my first hearing of this aria. So it remains the the ideal but all these other fine performances are within the standard that Price set.

I've nearly worn it out.
I first fell in love the this one of Puccini's arias on the movie soundtrack of A Room With a View sung by the stunning Dame Kiri.
But to see Renee just wander back out on stage and knock this out like she does for a casual encore just leaves me with shivers down my spine.

Renee was at the PEAK of her singing in these few years before she started to slide up and down to notes. I saw here 6 months earlier at San Francisco Opera in her only run of "Louise". If anybody has bootleg video of that performance, PLEASE share!!!! It was the most delicious and creamy performance of her whole career!!!

I cried listening to this...
I heard her, at Miami, one year earlier, and she sang this aria too. I will always remember it. And her Faust´s Jewels Song. She was SO great. After the concert, we talked about Victoria de los Angeles, and she was so excited when talking about her, she told me she phoned her many times, at her Barcelona´s home, and Victoria told me that too. How great Reneé! What an artist, a voice, a beauty in sense!

This is really very good, but before we start talking in terms of "the greatest of all time" I'd just like to say two words: Leontyne Price. For the post-Sean-and-Madonna-generation worshippers of Renée Fleming (a good singer, no question) that name may not mean a lot, but to those of us who heard her sing this aria live, as an encore in every single recital she ever gave, well, we know what true HISTORICAL greatness is. Still, Fleming is very good here.
I DO adore Leontyne and had the great fortune to attend one of her last recitals in Montreal in the 90's (I had traveled there just for the occasion ...) ... one of the greatest emotions of my entire opera lover's life ... but there is something that connects me to Renée in a much personal intimate way ... I don't know how to explain ... I can feel her heart and relate to it thru the utmost beauty of the voice ... this is so personal anyway ...
