This was arguably THE biggest (late night) anime of the 00s. Words can not express what a huge, huge deal this anime was in 2006. There just outright isn't a modern equivalent that was as all-consuming as Haruhi back in the day. The funniest thing about this show is how season 2 was released back in the day. After three years of radio silence, they announced they'd be re-airing the series. Then, with zero promotion at all, new episodes started randomly airing in the middle of the re-broadcast of season 1. So technically season 1 is 14 episodes, but season 2 is 28 episodes (technically only 14 episodes, but the 14 from season 1 are included because that's how it originally aired). They loved doing weird stunts like that with Haruhi.
And yeah, this anime was such a big deal that Haruhi's voice actress was cast in bloody everything for the next couple of years. Misa from Death Note is probably the only role you'd recognize, but she was everywhere.

I disagree, the disjointed narrative and breaking apart the "main" story (The episodes titled Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I - VI) which adapt the first novel really does a disservice to how incredible the first novel is. As much of a lark it is to be like "Hah! They aired a completely different episode rather than the second half of a detective mystery" it really doesn't do much beyond that. As a cohesive story, Melancholy is a much stronger and more emotional structured story than even Disappearance, but unfortunately due to people like you who claim that people need to watch it in the wacky broadcast order instead of chronological, that gets missed a lot of the time.

    • @05stapj
      @05stapj Год назад +1

Nah, I'd say you have to watch chronological to integrate season 2 properly

    • @mrmxypltk
      @mrmxypltk Год назад +3

@@megiddoxah, the disjointed nature of Kyon Order (Broadcast Order) is part of what helped hook people on Haruhi in the first place, and actually gives the season as a whole a satisfying ending, where as in Haruhi Order (chronological) it sort of just slowly winks out at the end. A dissatisfying *poof* instead of going out with a *Bang*
The disjointed nature, especially the first episode being the "movie" about Mikuru that they shot told people upfront that this wasn't your average School based Slice of life anime. This was something different. Something special. The impact of it was important.
That said, after watching in Kyon Order, people should also rewatch it in Haruhi Order if they're somehow confused and can't piece it together on their own, especially before watching Season 2 and The Movie.

    • @regtiangha
      @regtiangha Год назад +2

@@mrmxypltk Exactly. Once you watch it in chronological order, you'll never be able to watch and enjoy Kyon order because it wouldn't hit the same and there'd be no point. But chronological order makes sense if wanting to watch season 2 as well. Ideally, you'd watch Kyon order for season 1 and then chronological order to get season 2, but that's a large time commitment. If you wanted to just get through it with no intent to revisit, then S1/S2 in chronological order followed by the movie would be okay. There are so many other things to watch too, lol.

For today's anime history lesson that nobody asked for:
The Haruhi Suzumiya series is based on a light novel series. Each novel is titled "The (something) of Haruhi Suzumiya" such as "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya", "The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya", "The Intrigue of Haruhi Suzumiya" etc. The anime adaptation stuck with "Melancholy" as the universal title, despite covering several of the other differently titled novels.
The Haruhi Suzumiya series follows a small club created by our titular heroine out of her melancholy that interesting paranormal things like aliens, time travelers, and ESPers (psychics) don't exist. Unknown to Haruhi, she is actually God, and her friends are secretly the self-same aliens, time travellers, and ESPers she was wishing for, willed into existence by her melancholy. And they're all trying desperately to convince her that everything is "normal" and that paranormal things can't possibly be real, so that she doesn't subconsciously make things worse.
If you enjoy Spy×Family's gimmick of "highly interesting people use their immense skills to try and convince each other and the world that they are actually highly uninteresting," Haruhi Suzumiya is the grandmother of that trope.

The art style is obviously pretty different compared to more modern anime; however, the more you watch, the themes and comedy will definitely cause it to grow on you. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was a huge anime phenomenon back in the mid 2000s. Some notable factoids without spoilers: The show was originally aired "out of order" intentionally. The second season was actually more of a rebroadcast of the first season but with extra episodes added in. 8 of those extra episodes were the infamous "Endless Eight" arc, where all 8 are basically the same plot but animated a little differently each time. It was very controversial at the time, especially for the weekly viewers. The movie sequel "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" is considered one of the greatest anime movies of all time by a lot of people. The first ending "Hare Hare Yukai" was a huge phenomenon on it's own, kind of like a TikTok dance before that was a thing. You can even still find videos of people doing it on youtube, including people in a prison! Aya Hirano is the voice actress of Haruhi and the singer of the songs as well so probably the one you were referring to. In another Kyoto Animation show, Lucky Star, Aya Hirano also plays the lead and there is a pretty significant Haruhi Suzumiya cameo/reference made because of it.

This anime is really special. It had a huge Impact in the industry when it came out. It marked the identity of one of the most beloved anime studies of all time. And sadly, many who worked on this show are no longer Alive 😔. The Attack in Kyoto animation studio was one of the worst homicides in all of Japan's history.
The show is actually not that great in the current context 😂. It's some crazy as shit happening in high school. The show is just a high school slice of life but the characters are alien, God, Time traveler, esper and our main character... A normal dude. Even though the premise sounds crazy, at the end of the day, the whole show is funny high school gags. And the show directors experiment with some crazy shits too. Like, the show was aired in Random order of episodes... So nothing made sense 😭😭😭
This show is great because of #1, it's influence all over the industry... And #2, the Movie that follows this show. After the 2 seasons of the anime, they released a movie... Which I consider as the best anime movie related to an anime series ever. The movie made me tear up and feel things that I never expected to feel.
I would say this show is still worth watching just for that one movie experience ❤️. Though it is hard to sit through the show because it's soo 2006 and anime has reached a point where ideas from this show have been explored many times and in many better ways. Don't get me wrong, the show isn't bad. But it's not some bindblowingly cool shit in 2023

Another KyoAni anime, Lucky Star, also has a dance OP but the whole dance itself is on the last episode. The MC, Konata, is voiced by the same person that voiced Haruhi. Lucky Star has no particular ED as each episode, Konata sings inside a random anime song inside a karaoke bar for the outro.

One of my all time favorite animes, this helped put my favorite studio on the map. Yes the SOS club is sort of the setting of the show, but it's all about the characters.
As well as having one of the biggest viral anime dances of all time (1st ED) this is generally known to have set the standard for 'Moe Slice-of-life' for the next decade with almost every cliché established and done brilliantly covering VR-style (*not actually VR) space battles, sci-fi incursions, time travel, reality manipulation and... and... none of it matters, it's just a snarky narrated chaotic show about a group of school kids having fun... well, Haruhi is having fun - the rest are in a mad scramble to keep her from accidently destroying the world!
It did have the Endless-Eight arc that made a lot of fans hit their heads against walls for 8 weeks but redeemed itself with one of the best anime films ever.
We who have read the novels are still hoping for a new series... and more novels to conclude the story.

    Couple of things!
Aya Hirano, the Voice Actress for Haruhi, is also one of the people singing in all these songs. She has an amazing vocal range. I was lucky enough to see her perform live at a convention years ago!
As far as anime must watches go, in no particular order off the top of my head, here are 5 I think are must watches.
    1: FMAB
    2: Cowboy Bebop
3: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    4: Fooly Cooly (FLCL)
    5: Angel Beats
And as far as additional seasons of anime go, it used to be fairly rare that anime got a second season directly after the first. They often wait until seeing the DVD, manga, and other merch sales before greenlighting additional seasons. This means we sometimes get a break of a few years between them.
The longest I've personally waited for an additional season was 12 years.
Full Metal Panic, a series that KyoAni did Seasons 2 and 3 of, eventually had a Season 4, which aired 12 years after Season 3. I'm still waiting for it's conclusion, season 5. (which hasn't been announced yet. But I'm patient.)
Studio Gonzo did Full Metal Panic in 2002
KyoAni did Full Metal Panic? : Fumofuu! In 2003, and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid in 2005
We got an OVA also by KyoAni in 2006, and a small Movie series by Studio Gonzo from 2017-2018
Followed by the most recent season, Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory by Studio Xebec in 2018.

A note about the voices is that in Japan there is a whole... you could call it "subculture" maybe (?) of musician that double as voice actors, so they actually sing the opening and ending for anime and then voice the characters (usually the protagonist, but there are notable exceptions)
The best part of this anime? The protagonist is actually the guy with the face that says "I'm so done with all this"

3:24 This anime is a weird one, it is a slice of life, so just watching their day by day lives (often includes comedy in that genre) without spoilers it is about a guy who gets roped into a club that investigates paranormal stuff. He is the ultimate straight man with his reactions, and he works as the perfect foil to Haruhi's hyper positive vibe and the goofiness that occurs. It birthed many memes too, particularly that dance in the ending.
    With spoilers:
and pretty major ones, especially for season 2.
The show is about Haruhi who is a near godlike being who can make things happen just by wanting them to, but she doesn't know it. Our MC is like the only person immune? to her, and the show follows all the weird things that happen because of her through his perspective. Season two just as an example is strange because 8 episodes are the exact same thing with minor differences (it is called endless 8 for a reason) that is intentional, Haruhi didn't want summer to end, so she causes a groundhog day type scenario where the same days just repeat.

Okay, first thing first. The way you pronounce the title for the first time is correct. Good job.
So, to not spoil it too much, this anime is about the power of mind. Although it's fun most of the time, It can go a bit dark, especially in the movie, but this is the kind that makes you think. The first season is a bit jumbled in episode order, but they re-released it together with 2nd season in chronological order.
This is what I considered 'THE ANIME' when you mentioned about anime, and it's pretty dominant back in 2000's. Even in Japan, I think Haruhi is still a strong figure in anime industry, as it has a good story, music and even a dance from the 1st ending. If you go to most anime expos or convection, you might be able to find someone cosplay as one of its characters easily. Also, some other anime (especially that centralized on parody jokes) are commonly referencing this anime due to its strong influence to anime culture.

You asked about shows that are considered "must watch" for anime fans and I think it really depends on when someone started watching. From this era, Haruhi was one the biggest and most influential. I would say that for me it would either be Gurren Lagann, whose staff went on to form the studio that made your brothers favorite show Kill la Kill, or the Monogatari series with among other things its infamous toothbrush scene was completely inescapable when it aired. You could have never watched the show, but the memes were everywhere. I still see the 4th OP Renai Circulation used frequently which just goes to show how popular it is. All three of these show were massively influential at the time they came out and inspired tons of shows that followed.

This was probably one of the anime calling cards of the 2000's as you put it. It launches so many imitators and copycats that are being made to this day.
Watching it though is very weird. The anime is very good but it is also very, shall we say without spoiling it, artistic. The series is all too happy to play with your head, expectations, and narratives. Especially the second season. You don't just watch it; you experience it in a way that few movies or shows have even attempted. And that can really put some people off.
That being said, the series is extremely good. The main character/narrator's inner monologue is amazing and hilarious. Haruhi's energy is always fun despite the insanity of it.
Another Kyoto Animation show that is in a similar headspace to the Haruhi Suzumiya series is Hyouka.

The longest I can think of for an anime having to wait for a continuation to its story without even any spin-off material to tide people over is probably Cardcaptor Sakura at 18 years (ended 2000, new season 2018). If you don't count spin-offs or movies or anything then it's Lupin III at THIRTY YEARS between its Part 3 and Part 4 (ended 1985, resumed 2015, but it's had plenty of spin-offs and movies in that time). The time between Devilman and Devilman Crybaby is also huge (45 years, 1973-2018) but that's not a continuation, it's more of a reboot.

If we're talking about relevance to the medium, Evangelion is the one you should watch, since a bunch of shows make references to it even today.
I would say Haruhi was as big as Eva back in the day, but it became a bit forgotten these days.

12:44 not all anime adaption is made with the intention to be an independent or complete work, as cruel and a bit crude as it sounds almost all anime that is adapted from a different medium is to be infomercials that promotes the source materials which is why haruhi suzumiya started in 2006 but ended in 2009 as it wasnt really intended to have a 2nd season but the popularity was too good to pass up resulting in a 2nd season much later and this is pretty common in the anime industry as the source material may not even be complete yet like for example shakugan no shana anime is adapted from a novel series and its first season aired oct.5.05 ending mar.23.06 then the 2nd season aired a year later at near similar dates from oct.5.07 to mar.28.08 but then it had a gap of 3 years before its final 3rd season aired in oct.8.11 to mar.24.12 which is also around the time the last SnS novel volume was released and reached its story conclusion with FMA brotherhood having a similar parallel with its manga as the last manga chapter and anime episode were only around a month apart
the anime industry has had different approaches to ongoing source materials over the years as a studio may invent completed new materials in filler arcs to allow the source material to grow before playing catch up (naruto and bleach is notorious for having a huge amount of filler though this did allowed them to air for straight from from early 2000s to early and late 2010s which is why its so well known), others simply decide to divert from the source creating its own new continuity (FMA 2003 was this as the manga was far from finished as is another series too known as black butler) and some studio may simply alter the conclusion to the last story arc they adapting to anime essentially ending this particular adaption as a complete story (some threads may still be attached) though can overlap with diverting from the source but these days the more common approach is to simply leave the ending open-ended or hint at a continuation so they can potentially pick up where they left off on
13:06 im not sure if there was ever a sequel with a gap of like 2 decades between seasons, the longest i can think of right off the top of my head is with magister negi magi (aka negima) and its sequel UQ holder
negima is manga that had an anime adaption 2005-06, it was a cheap anime overall and never had a 2nd season but the IP itself was interesting enough that they retooled it into a 2nd anime with a different continuity but that didnt really take off as far as i know so the studio just kept releasing OVA every few years basically single episodes of the series animating later events that happen in manga but never a full on 2nd season and this continued all the way to 2011 where the studio released a movie animating the ending of the manga but they also completely changed the ending too so not quite there, the manga by this point had already ended with the manga artist purposely ending his work prematurely on purpose to rebel against a potential new law that would have snatched ownership of his work away from him and then he later went on to create a new manga series titled UQ holder that upon first chapter release revealed it to be a stealth sequel to negima under a different name... that is until about a hundred chapters later it changed its name to UQ holder: magister negi magi 2 officializing it as negima's sequel and so when UQ holder got its anime adaption airing in 2017 it also used this name so negima officially had its sequel anime 11 years later
using the negima name also connected it more to its parent series too that the UQ holder anime even went and reused the original negima opening theme [happy material] pretty much bombing fans with nostalgia

Haruhi Suzumiya is well known for being a more on thr light hearted side during the 2 seasons of the TV series (you could say it's actually the series that pretty much started or popularized the trend of Highschool anime back in the mid 2000's) but it takes much more of a serious tone with the movie that takes place after the series, that movie being "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" which is still imo THE best anime franchise film of all time, and up there one of the best anime films of all time.
