    What a haunting sensitive vocal from John Richardson. The Rubettes remains highly underrated. After the 1974/1975 hit years they parted way with their songwriting team and started to release singles and albums in a Country vein. Baby I Know and Sometime In Old Church are great albums. This gem is a highlight from the Baby I Know album (1977).

    They blew the stuffy old music establishment away with this song - best country, pop, pre-punk song ever performed, and they sacrificed everything to honour the truth. Pure love to these guys.

    The Rubettes is one of my favourite 70s bands. Catchy songs, moving effortlessly from 50s Faux Doo wop to more contemporary pop and Country Rock influences, in the style of The Eagles. A marvellous band. Ive got all their 8 studio albums recorded between 1974 and 1979 on CD. Probably hard to get a hold of today, the CDs were released on Dice Records in 1992 and includes their 8 albums scattered cross 4 marvellous CDs!

    Recording and releasing this song was a bold move for any artist back in the mid 70s. A song with a strong gay theme was taboo and most artists wouldn't touch it with a barge pole for fear of negative publicity and damage to their career. Respect to the Rubettes for blazing a trail.

      Rod Stewart made the headlines about a song called "The Killing Of Georgie" from his "A Night On The Town" album in 1976 as well and indeed they deserve respect.
      This and The Rubettes' song are brilliant.

Ah, la pochette de "We can do it", je l'adore.

    I am not gay, but this song is just awesome! Surprised that George Michael did not cover this while he was alive. To think it was 1973, and this highly sensitive subject was highlighted in that era. I was just 9 at the time. I will bring this to the attention of a gay friend of mine. He may appreciate it.

      "I am not gay ..." Not very relevant information. ;) Indeed the song is awesome and pioneering. The singer of the German version was met with some kind of tacit boycot, he did not get to perform it on TV, received almost no airplay and felt compelled to clarify that he was straight. With some ring of regret he claimed that hitting that topic actually destroyed his career. Quite telling about the clmate of an era that's not so long ago yet. This song was important, lyrically a milestone, let alone the great songwriting.

      It's about a young lad whose dad finds out his son is gay. The dad attacks the boyfriend and the next day he kills his own son. Back when The Rubettes brought this song out,gay and lesbian was still a taboo subject. You have to admire them for bringing this song out. Whether it's a true story or not it's the sort of thing that happened. They were brave to bring this song out, but they have to be admired for it. Beautifully written, produced, and beautifully sung by John who put so much feeling into the song. Love them for this song ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      kukol
      The Rubettes were only formed from somewhere between January 74 to the first appearance on TOTP in April 74. Sugar Baby Love was recorded in 73 made up of session musicians including Paul Da Vinci on lead and John Richardson played drums and spoke the "please take my advice" part, he would later be the only one from that recording to later be part of the Rubettes. The Rubettes weren't even a name in 73.

    • @ActiMist
      @ActiMist 6 лет назад +2

      Also, never take Wikipedia seriously. It is full of errors. Alan Williams was the original lead singer with the band, but he was not part of the session musicians who recorded SBL in 73 (only John Richardson was). When Wiki says that those session musicians minus Paul Da Vinci would later become The Rubettes is totally untrue.
