I had to quit using Varnish and now use
Water Based Poly (that you use for Exterior OUTDOORS on the Front Door...
I love it... a little costly... but worth it!!!
    Does NOT Smell

I do NOT use OIL BASE Anything.... I can't handle the smell...
I use Exterior Latex House Paint... and Water Base Poly ... It last so well...
And I can put glitter in the water base Poly and it is amazing.

I'm still looking for water based poly in Costa Rica. I use what I have available. Do you use Varathane?

Just wondering if this technique could be used on a 100% cotton floor mat?

Hi Lisa, To be honest, I do not know. I use paint as a base coat then apply sealer. I would try it on a piece of cotton first. I do know someone who used varnish on raw cotton placemats that had not been sealed but printed then varnished. I imagine it would work but cannot give you my recommendation without trying it first.
