I asked some TKD people, but never got an answer to this: why do you do the preparation move for the Sonnal-Makki from behind, and pull the fist from inside in the hansonnal makki? What is the application for that? In Karate, the hand that goes to the torso, comes from the front in Sonnal-Makki (Shuto-Uke) to show that you pull the arm or elbow of your opponent and strike the neck with the sonnal hand. And for hansonnal-makki, the fist comes from outside (and below) to show that you catch your opponent's leg while the sonnal hand strikes the neck (bigger distance due to the longer leg in comparison to the arm, so you cannot pull it just to the torso)
great comment!! i just checked out Shuto-Uke and I was surprised it was the opposite from Taekwondo in the way they pull their hand back instead. I unfortunately couldn't find any videos on RUclips regarding the way Karate does hansonal-makki as I really wanted to see that too :( Anyways, that is also a common question I get and ask myself too, the answer I received & researched is that the sonnal makki comes from behind for support and to follow-up for the next attack or block.
@@wootaekwon I see. That's the explanation I got also. So the assistance hand does not seem to have a real purpose within the technique in Taekwondo after all. For the hansonnal-makki, it is called Shuto-Yoko-Uke in Shotokan-Karate. Rarely used technique. Afaik, it comes only once at the olgul level in a single Kata called Gankaku. But even there sometimes people execute it as Shuto-Uchi because of the higher reach.
I started training 2 weeks back. Want to compete in tournaments your videos are helpful in learning pomsae. Appreciate it.
