Had mine since 2003, did 9 weeks then in Iraq war, so equally at home in the other extreme (sand storm proof!). It has never got a tear, nor broken pole. I see the supplied pegs have improved, look good. I didn't know they've introduced a 'footprint' that can be attached for simultaneous rigging until today. Nice idea, not sure I'll get one for the Akto but certainly reasonable idea on the 2's & 3GT's with the larger vestibule where you're more likely to lay gear out. Still using mine, tours in Europe on motorbike and has seen action at the occasional music festival :) They're Hilleberg Red Label, still used in 'extreme' conditions but manufactured with lighter materials as opposed to Black Label ~ so a slight trade off of strength for weight saving. Any commentators to Abbie's vid can simply go to Hilleberg's website and read up their products colour coding. The weight/size/quality of this tent = no brainer. Nice vid Abbie.
Hello Pete! Thank you for your great comment here! May I just add some little note about the Akto Footprint! - Btw I have added this to my Hilleberg Akto tent and I also have a more stronger spare pole about 10 mm that is with the same lenght from another Hilleberg tent called The Nammatj 2 GT that has the same lenght of poles (293mm) but a bit more stronger in 10mm compared to the 9mm standard pole for Akto. Also I wish to draw our attention to the moisture coming from ground or the water from ground which may or can be more problematic compared than rain pouring from upside and from heaven! I think 3000 mm will hold very well you completely dry inside your cosy Akto as Abbie mentioned about Akto. This is some facts about the Akto Footprint in case someone is interested to purchase this for demanding areas where you might hiking: This tough ground sheet helps to protect your tent’s floor from abrasion and to keep ground moisture from rising in the vestibule. This footprint covers the full area of the Akto outer tent. • Weight: 255 g and in addition you can actually use one additional pole for "double poling," which gives extra strength and stability. (and in very dry and hot environment you might wish these: Pole Holder Kit for Inner Tent Extra pole holders are needed when you want to pitch the inner tent by itself. Link these to the corners of the inner, and place the ends of the poles into them. The Akto Pole Holder Kit is needed to pitch the Akto inner tent on its own. And I end with this little information about the word "Akto" --> “Akto” means “alone” in Sami, the language of the people indigenous to northern Scandinavia. Wishing you all the Happy Camping and very BIG THANK to you Abbie for a very good and inspiring Akto tent review! Your dog is simply adorable and most cute! /All the very Best always-wishes from Charl (Sweden the homeland of this tentmaker Hilleberg!)
I was going to get a spare Akto pole for spare / double-poleing. Thanks for the info on the stronger Nammatj 2 GT pole. I think I'll go for that instead!
Great stuff Abbie, I've been using Hilleberg for years and just got the Tarra of which i shall be reviewing pretty soon. The Akto is far the best one man backpacking tent going and has been since i got my first one 8yrs ago. I'm 6,2" and fit perfect in it. Hope you have years of fine shelter and the safe knowledge were ever you are you will always be dry in an Akto ;) cheers Tony
I have one too. I do consider it a heavy one man tent but take it when Im concerned about bad weather, low mileage days and when interior base camping. Quality is second to none
Thank you for the insight, recently saw your Hadrian's Wall walk, I was hopping to do it this year in Sep, but due to accident have had to put off until April 2018. Which has worked out as now one of my daughters will join me.
You are such a lovely and cheery girl, it's a pleasure to watch your videos :) Great review, no nonsense, def. gonna have to check this tent out. Happy trails!
I've used one for cycling across Europe. Stands up to any weather, very robust and should last a 15 years or so. Great size for spending a month or so in. £400 is cheap for such a good tent.
I have one of these and it will withstand a lot of wind because its made of really good materials (so it's strong) but I don't think it's designed for use other than emergency use in high winds because it flaps a lot. It's strong not stable and therefore i think of it as a backpacking tent 'on steroids' not a mountaineering tent it performs well as a spacious backpacking tent and has a huge safety margin as it won't fail on you but you won't sleep in it if it's really windy! Hilleberg do the Soulo for single person extreme conditions camping. The Akto is very spacious for a one person tent, it's very easy to set-up and the possibility of doing an outer first pitch is great for setting up or decamping in horrible conditions, you can easily keep the inner dry.
I did 500 miles on the Appalachian trail and used my Akto. Great little tent however condensation is so bad everything gets soaked . In addition the wire that creates the curve front for the vent on the door cut into the tent and it leaked from new. I ran into another thru hiker using the Akto and his tent also leaked at the same location due to the wire puncturing the tend door. I contacted Hilleberg here in the USA and they said if I send the tent back(at my expense) they will fix it.
looks good. been considering ditching my vango mirage 300 for a 1-2 man hike tent - it's great for weeklong summer camps with my scouts, but more space and weight than I need for weekends.
Hi, I am a new subscriber. I love that tent and I'm sorry I didn't purchase it. I instead purchased the Nemo meta 2p. I was afraid the single pole might snap over the course of six months of constant use. However I love the roominess and the fact that you can set it up in a rain storm with little worry of getting the inside of the tent drenched. When I first saw the tent on RUclips there were few reviews other than the manufacturer site. You did a great job describing the tent. I very much look forward to more exciting gear reviews.
Hello Abbie! A big THANK to you for your excellent and very nice complete tent review! You are so very inspiring too! Wishing you great future adventures and nice hiking experiences with your Akto! Best Wishes from Charl (Sweden)
I choose a Keron 3 for my tent. For the price difference I decided to go with the Black Label series. It took me 6 months to finally decide on which Hilleberg to get.
Just sold my XL Dutch Army Hooped Bivi. That I managed 30minutes in. Too hot. Having seen this just replaced the Bivi with a green one. Thanks for this and your 3 year on review 👍🏻
Great review and well filmed! Have had a Soulo, Staika and now have a Tarra. Swear by Hilleberg. The only tent I've had that I feel could live with them was my Northface VE-25, which misses out on the top spot because it's a pitch inner first. Keep up the great work, kindest regards, Dean Cooling Gwent, Wales.
smashing little lightweight tent. I have one. Off for a few nights camp this week. I also have a Vango Banshee 300 for if I want a bit more space and am willing to carry the extra weight. But it's the Akto this week, so looking forward to kipping in my Hilleberg home. Got a deal with the Akto a couple o years ago, a free footprint, that alone costs 50 quid new. Expensive gear but quality.
Nice review .. I always go for free standing , as the terrain can differ for me.. I also feel semi geodesic tents have that extra mile in the tank when it all goes Pete Tong... I own a Hilleberg Tarra , but rarely use it due to weight.. I stay away from MSR and Terra Nova... There are some hidden gems to be found on the Chinese market.. Asta Gear.. Longsinger,3F UL.. With pole upgrades and mods just as good for a lot less money...Plus sub 2kg pack weights... I am also a Osprey fan .. I use the Stratos 50L . Just in case you did not already know.. I always carry 4 x Delta Ground anchors for worse case scenarios ... Light weight and very reliable.. Keep the content coming young gun.. Very enjoyable..Information is power...
Great review !! Bought myself a atko tent and used it a couple of weeks ago. Such a great tent. There is an offer with taunton leisure that if you get the atko you will get a free footprint with it. Going to brecon tomorrow with my atko in the rain, cant wait.
You all prolly dont care but does anybody know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I love any tips you can offer me!
@Alec Harper I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Bought a lightweight 3 person igloo tent with full fly sheet 25 yrs ago at a camping store. Paid $120. Don't know mfger or care. It's worked perfectly all these yrs. Those smaller tents are suitable for exposed windy campsites and stealth.... My favourite style.
Fantastic tent, however it's only 3000mm HH, that concerns me a bit especially with all the rain in Ireland. Your passion for the outdoors is inspiring!
Great review Abbie. You convinced me to buy one. I'll be taking mine on the PCT in April. Will be interesting to compoare it to some of the American tents that are about half the weight, Big Agnes, Z Packs etc.
Hi Abbie, thanks for sharing. I am looking to save up to buy one of these shortly, its a mashive outlay but I feel with the quality it will be an investment. atb Si
brilliant review Abbey! I have a Terra nova comp 1 which is not a bad tent ( they used to be made in their factory just down the road from me and now are made in China! ) But I wish I had now bought the Akto as I think it is a far superior tent and is just that bit more roomy...I'm paranoid about leaving stuff in the porch as I'm scared someone will nick it lol! PS dogs lovely too!
+edward charles Kerlon 1800 is 40D Ripstop nylon, 1200 is 30D, and 1000 is 20D. They are coated on both sides with 100% silly cones. Kerlon = good quality silnylon.
lovely vid :) really helps me because I've been considering buying one, and I worried about there not being enough room for me and the dog inside. but it looks fine actually :) thanks for a good vid!
Sure would, if you could find one! Just make sure to check it out before you buy it for any issues. Ask how has been stored and make sure never pack away damp.
it's unreal how much trickle-down this style/design of tent experienced over the past few years. My OEX Phoxx 1 V2 is still great after ~50 uses, and is practically the same as this tent but £50 instead of £600, and polyester instead of nylon - which I'd argue is preferable anyway since it doesn't sag
Is it possible to fold the tent so the 'inner' is already inside and therefore the whole can be erected simultaneously? That would be good when putting up the tent in wet, windy or snowy conditions? I think the Soulo tent - again by Hilleberg - permits that...
Yeah ots nice. But I got a 3 man dome tent can fit a dbl air mattress and a IRR longback pack. It comes in at 2kg, $30 from kmart, same package size. A lot different cost. So for 200gr less.....you pay a lot more
Hi, I’m new to hiking & already have a Akto I’ve used for cycle touring that I used with footprint. Would you recommend using footprint when hiking or is it best left behind to reduce the pack weight?
Great question! I don't own and never have owned a footprint. I would say go without to save weight and keep pack size down, but it is all personal preference :)
Abbie Barnes | Song Thrush Productions thanks Abbie, I’ve completed first 4 days hike without footprint & it was fine, just needed a bit more care on area to pitch tent ⛺️😉👍🏻
Hi there, well done :) I strongly recommend the Akto "Footprint", it's really worth the extra cost. It protects the tent perfectly and keeps the foretent/entry clean and dry for your bags etc. I keep it stored all pre-attached so It sets up with the rest of the tent. A question: Why did u set up the inner tent separately from the outer tent? For better demonstration? Ok, keep up the good work!
...aaand here comes the correct vocabulary: Of course it should read "pitching" instead of "set up". Btw: In 2007 there was this orcan "Kyrill" which blew over Europe. I was testing the Akto and it laughed at more than 100 km/h windspeed. Only thing I can recommend are earplugs, so sleeping is possible in all that noise. Bye, greetings from Austriaaaah! :)
I'd think twice before buying the footprint. I don't find a groundsheeted vestibule all that useful. You can't peg down a stove or put a hot cooking pot on it and muddy boots or other equipment get it dirty. It also adds weight. I sold my footprint and made a lightweight footprint from plastic sheeting that weighs 30g and covers the base of the inner only.
+Jon Mathias hi, so why did you buy it anyway? :) I nevertheless like it, because it's a great protection for the tent and I like my pack in the clean vestibule. As for the shoes and oven: You can easily detach and roll back the footprint from the inside, even partially. Have fun!
+Markus Puschert Ha ha! Because I was inexperienced. What is the point of experience if you don't learn from it? We all hike our own hike. The footprint weighs 245g - a not insignificant addition to a 1.5kg tent. The Akto's groundsheet is plenty tough enough on its own.
I notice you have the Vango Zenith 100 and the Wild Country Zephyros 1 as well. I do know you really love your Akto but how do they compare? You traded them in for a reason - what was it? Is condensation a problem for this typical style of tent or is it just the Akto?
Great film Abbie, you're very natural in front of the camera. Quick question for you, if you could choose between the Akto or the Soulo, which would you choose? I appreciate there's a 600gm weight difference. Thanks. Oh, subbed your channel too.
Hey Abbie, great review of the Akto! I do have one question for you, and hope that you can help me out. I own a Vango Zenith 100 now and wonder if the Akto is longer, does it fit taller people? According to the websites the difference is only 5 centimeter but to me it seems like it should be more. Thanks for helping me out :)
The thing to watch out for is the difference is height between the inner and the outer. 5cm really isnt all that much though! I have to say, being sat in my Hilleberg for many hours can be quite uncomfortable as it gets my back as I can't sit up straight unless I'm in the middle, so mostly I just lie down to stretch out my back.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. What I meant to ask about is the difference in lenght between the Akto and the Zenith. I understand that sitting in such a small tent might not be too comfortable, but I don't want to have to touch the tent when I am lying down in it. In my Zenith now I kind of have to do that.
Haha no I was talking about the length, but perhaps you might call that width. You would have to be pretty big to touch the sides indeed :p But I am tall, so that in the Zenith sometimes my head and feet at touching the tent.
Great review Abbie :) You mentioned your brother was pretty tall, did he find there was enough head room when sitting down? I'm 6ft 6 and am dithering on this one for the height reasons.
David Gladwish Hi David. Thanks for your question. I think the best thing you can do it try one. It certainly is a roomy tent - he is 6ft 4/5 and he fits, so I reckon you would manage :)
Hey Abbie :) Unfortunately they don't have any of these here in Malta so I don't have the option to try one. It does say it's 36 inches high on the inside though which might just about squeeze me in, and if your bro does fit I probably would too. Thanks for your help and keep the reviews coming :)
David Gladwish you are probably not going to be able to sit straight upright in the akto. Im 176 cm (dont know feet, but i guess im smaller than you). I can sit upright in the highest spot of the tent. But that was never a problem for me. I‘m in the tent mostly to sleep and cooking only in harsher conditions. For that its absolutely fine. Changing clothes and everything is easy, cant stand up in it anyway. In the outer tent vestibule you have a little more space. In your situation i would probably call hilleberg and ask them. I would trust them. Check the other on person tents of hilleberg, you’ll find yours. The Akto is more a hiking than a camping tent, sometimes when i just camp for more than two nights in the same place i bring a extra tarp to hang around under it. I love the akto, i‘ll mount my new footprint in the next minutes and set the tent up to see if everything is allright.
Good review but people should be aware that nylon degrades from sunlight. With reports from long term tourers that their Hilleberg Kerlon 1800 Staika etc) tents degraded within a year of constant use (Akto with Kerlon 1200 won't be as strong). A canvas swag might be a better solution for some. With a canvas Bikers/Horse Swag weighing in at a heavier 5 kilo's but lasting a lifetime with the proper care. Horses for courses.
Great review Abbie, I've been tempted to get the Atko for a number of years now for winter use in Wales. Your detailed vid helped me decide! Are you using a footprint with the tent ? Thanks a.t.b. Vee
Wildsoul62 Thanks for your comment! I actually havent been using the footprint, simply because I couldn't afford one.. I spend a great deal of time checking and cleaning my tents after their use though, so hopefully it will last! Lots of people have said to get one, but I think I will pass. Hope this helps!
Abbie Barnes | Song Thrush Productions Thanks Abbie, yes helps a lot thanks. On further inspection it looks like it's not tall enough for me at 6'1", shame as I'm also looking to replace the Zephyros 1 :) The search continues! Still superb tent and good review!
Great review Abbie! I know you said that you managed to squeeze two in the Akto. Do you think it might be work for an overnighter/2 day with a dog in tow - curled up at one end? Thanks
A couple of things. 1, Seriously get your feet checked as they look a bit red at least in the video. 2. There is a lighter option than the Akto which is the Nordisk Telemark 1 at 770 g. I do not think it can withstand the same wind speeds as the Akto and may also be smaller on the inside. I think the price is roughly the same. Thoughts and feelings most welcome.
I dont get why even heavy tents tend to only have a rating of 3000. I mean, i have a pretty light jackat, cheap too mind you that is 5000. Can someone shed some light on this for me? My rain jacket has 10k. But a tent in that material would be expensive as hell and probably quite heavy too.
Joseph Behrmann I've got a Robens starlight 2 and I agree it has a lot more features than the hilleberg in a slightly heavier package, the air vent are especially good and can be open and closed from inside. It also has a part mesh door that can be opened and closed from inside.
Enjoyed your thorough review. Your enthusiasm has me sold on one.
I think I'll go for that instead!

just purchased one and love it, its so quick to put up and to drop.
just been emailed from hilleberg. The akto tent corner poles can be removed and refitted which enables you to pack the tent down smaller. cheers

Love the review Abbie. I see a purchase for me coming up very soon.
Very good indeed, love the tent, you've convinced me lol
+Gregorys Mode And I didnt even mean to make a sales pitch ;)
I see what you did there (pitch) lol
All Hilleberg tents are made out of kerlon fabric btw, not Nylon :) otherwise a great review. Finally desided to go for this tent. !
Kerlon is 20 denier nylon coated in silicone!
+edward charles Kerlon 1800 is 40D Ripstop nylon, 1200 is 30D, and 1000 is 20D. They are coated on both sides with 100% silly cones.
Kerlon = good quality silnylon.
edward charles
are you ok?
that was quite an interesting response lmao
Nice review Abbie :)...i felt the exact same when i finally got mine! You've got some great vids!..subbed :)
***** Thanks for the sub!
Hilleberg need to give you a free tent for all the Akto's you've now sold them! Great review
That would be ideal ;)
Good review
Excellent video! Look forward to seeing more of your reviews, Abby. BTW, Am I the only person on the face of the earth to own a RED Akto?? ;)
Sorry I spelled your name incorrectly, Abbie.
I own this in red as well.
lovely vid :) really helps me because I've been considering buying one, and I worried about there not being enough room for me and the dog inside. but it looks fine actually :) thanks for a good vid!
Hi Abbie, great review. Great tents but they are not cheap. Would you buy brand new or consider a second hand Akto? Any advice welcome. Simon
Great video
What is your take on which color to choose? Thanks!
Green is great for wild camping!
Great reviewe,
Myself a 2 GT.
thank you for the vid ! subed and liked :))) !
Great review.
thank you for your review, however; does the tent have ventilation in order to avoid condensation?
Awesome review and Bobby is very cute! :D
Is it possible to fold the tent so the 'inner' is already inside and therefore the whole can be erected simultaneously? That would be good when putting up the tent in wet, windy or snowy conditions? I think the Soulo tent - again by Hilleberg - permits that...
Yes they come apart :) I rarely pack them together away as it can get wet inside from the outer :)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi there, well done :)
I strongly recommend the Akto "Footprint", it's really worth the extra cost. It protects the tent perfectly and keeps the foretent/entry clean and dry for your bags etc. I keep it stored all pre-attached so It sets up
with the rest of the tent.
A question: Why did u set up the inner tent separately from the outer tent? For better demonstration?
Ok, keep up the good work!
...aaand here comes the correct vocabulary: Of course it should read "pitching"
instead of "set up".
Btw: In 2007 there was this orcan "Kyrill" which blew over Europe. I was testing the Akto and it laughed at more than 100 km/h windspeed. Only thing I can recommend are earplugs,
so sleeping is possible in all that noise.
Bye, greetings from Austriaaaah! :)
I got it, you have been explaining the features, I really should brush up my English!
I nevertheless like it, because it's a great protection for the tent and I like my pack in the clean vestibule.
Funny you had the Vango tent, last time.
I notice you have the Vango Zenith 100 and the Wild Country Zephyros 1 as well.
I do know you really love your Akto but how do they compare?
You traded them in for a reason - what was it?
Is condensation a problem for this typical style of tent or is it just the Akto?
looks a great tent, but all the reviews seem to be on flat gardens, not in alpine conditions with ground that isn't even. How to they pitch on that?
+Abbie: Thank you for the well done review. It actually helped me make a purchasing decision :-).
hey are You still happy with the Akto? cheers
Nice tent Abbie. I'm very tempted to make a investment:)
can you just leave the yellow inner shell attached and pack it that way ?
Great film Abbie, you're very natural in front of the camera. Quick question for you, if you could choose between the Akto or the Soulo, which would you choose? I appreciate there's a 600gm weight difference. Thanks. Oh, subbed your channel too.
Gotta say I love my Akto ;)
ElvisSnusovic Thanks for this, very helpful.
thanx for the review
btw
you are freaking adorable
Hey Abbie,
great review of the Akto!
Sander Schot Really? Im often miles from the sides of my Akto. It sure is a wide tent.
Haha no I was talking about the length, but perhaps you might call that width. You would have to be pretty big to touch the sides indeed :p But I am tall, so that in the Zenith sometimes my head and feet at touching the tent.
Nar Love wouldn't swap it for my Mil tec Recon 1 Flecktarn tent . Ha Ha at least I can blend in with the woodland
I love the akto, i‘ll mount my new footprint in the next minutes and set the tent up to see if everything is allright.
can the four corner poles be removed so it can be packed down further?
+MyBigt21 I think they probably could, but I'm not 100% sure. I certainly keep mine in, as it makes for easy packing away and putting up.
Bobby is cute
great review...my kind of girl :D
please compare it to your Zepherous 1 which is also 1.7 kg packed weight and 450 pounds cheaper
Can you sit up in this tent? Doesn't look that tall :) If so what's your height please?
gordi555 I can sit up in it with space above my head. Im 5'7" :) Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
Good question! Keep me posed if you find out!
Joseph Behrmann I've got a Robens starlight 2 and I agree it has a lot more features than the hilleberg in a slightly heavier package, the air vent are especially good and can be open and closed from inside. It also has a part mesh door that can be opened and closed from inside.
very nice video , loved everything about it you do a good job, but you really need to put some lotions on your feet
