More seriously: the film does explain why Monster X aka Kaiser Ghidora is so powerful that he can nearly kill Godzilla -- he has the Kaiser version of the M-gene that makes him equivalent to a super-version of one of the kung-fu mutant squad. Godzilla is the only kaiju who doesn't have the M-gene, which is why the Xilians can't just mind control him. So Godzilla fighting the Kaiser M-gene kaiju would be like Don Frye being the one to go after the Xilian leader at the end: Don Frye can solo the normal Xilians, without much problem, but he'd have had a hard time (apparently!) beating the leader, so a fellow Kaiser-gene mutant has to do that.
Admittedly, this is a convoluted reason, but the film is a convoluted mess, too, so... Just remember: "There's two things you don't understand about Earth. One of them's me. The other -- is Godzilla."

Yes, he was absolutely the wrong choice for this film. Roland Emmerich got flak back in the day for ripping off Jurassic Park in the 1998 Godzilla. He's got nothing on Kitamura, though. In addition to The Matrix and X-Men, Final Wars also cribs from Star Wars and Independence Day (a thief can also be robbed). Someone at Toho must have watched Versus, which was a good movie, but did no one think to hire Shusuke Kaneko to direct Final Wars? The series would have stopped without a 50th anniversary film if not for GMK's success.

Titanus Leviathan Not really you can only say that’s it’s close to being 1 Showa movie that being Ghidorah the Three headed monster, but even then it’s not like that similar to it anyway. Rodan doesn’t fight along Godzilla, there are more than just the 4 Kaiju in the film. The only Showa element was Angirus but he’s just a cameo.
If anything King of the Monsters made more references than just the Showa era of course there was Burning Godzilla or referencing artificiality created titans using genetic manipulation that being Biolante. Mean while Final wars is nothing but Showa references from the fact that 90% of the Kaiju are from the Showa era, the whole Gorath planet, the xelians, the atragon, meanwhile the rest of the franchise get cameos in form of a few figures in 1 scene.

Not to mention that Ghidorah himself hasn't really been in that many films anyway. He's only been in one film in the Heisei and Millenium films each, for instance. I can agree the story of Final Wars focuses less on Godzilla and more on what was trending, and I can attest that it's clunkily written. Space Godzilla, Kiryu, Biollante, King Ghidorah and other kaiju that don't appear in the film appear as bandai toys in that one scene with the kid in Canada. Not only was that scene a plugin for Bandai, but it suggests that those kaiju appeared at some points within Final Wars's own timeline as the kid remarks "that's a real anguirus," implying that he has an anguirus toy. So did humanity make toys out of the kaiju they defeated? Were there other godzillas besides FinalGoji that would make it possible for Space Godzilla and Biollante to appear as their backstories imply, unless they were rewritten?

When you sit and think about it, the preceding film Godzilla Tokyo SoS was the more reverent film to what came before, what with the lynch pin being the original Godzilla from 1954 bones being the center of the conflict, a classic man’s hubris vs nature moral lesson, the best depiction of Mothra in years, and even loving nods to showa history with mr Chujo being the same character from Mothra.
The fight scenes were dynamic but still true to what the suit designs were capable of. Does it have its weak points? Sure, like the sidelining of Akane from GxMG and the new pilot of Kiryu really just being there with little characterization just so the protagonist can butt heads. Even with little things like that, Tokyo SoS feels much more respectable about Godzilla which was your main issue with Final wars.
While I don’t utterly despise final wars, there are a few things that don’t gel well with it. Kyle Emerson’s score is fine on its own but it sounds like it belongs on a toku tv show (like the us scores to power rangers these days)than a big send off to Godzilla. (Sum41 with the zilla fight doesn’t really make sense though I became a fan of the song) Score was one thing that Bear McCreary got right with a proper belonging of new and old, that’s something final wars really needed. It’s nice to see classic showa and heisei actors pop up in this film but it kinda feels like they only did it for some just to say they got them in. (Akira Takarada is still a delight and Kumi Mizuno did well)
The suit thing is really noticeable on King Caesar , especially when he did that wrestling jump during the Mt Fuji Battle.
I think the fighting humans thing was a reply to all the complaints about human scenes in last films just being people talking around a table or looking at a monitor or from a rooftop. (And yet that kinda happens by the end anyway) It is rather cool to see a human task force attack a lesser monster like ebirah though.

I'm going to be honest, being a Godzilla fan living in the United States after the release of Godzilla: Final Wars and before the release of Godzilla 2014 was a pretty dark time, at least for me. Final Wars is a good movie, but even as a kid I knew that it has a lot of flaws, such as it's dumb Matrix/X-men action scenes with editing, music and lighting that reeks of early/mid 2000s and it's rushed monster fights. The fact that this was the latest Godzilla movie and the last one we will for a long time made me somewhat bitter. Not so bitter that I was angry, just unsatisfied. It's by far my least favorite Godzilla anniversary film and a not so good way to end the franchise for a decade. Hell, I'd say that Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs Destoroyah did a better job when it comes to "ending" the Godzilla franchise and that Tokyo S.O.S. is a better 50th anniversary film because those movies actually felt like what a Godzilla movie should be like. Final Wars feels like it was made that way because Toho felt that retiring Godzilla and celebrating his 50th anniversary is a good excuse to produce a 2-hour balls-to-the-wall edgy sci-fi fan-fiction featuring Godzilla & company written by a 12 year old who is trying to be cool and bad-ass by playing Grand Theft Auto and listening to Linkin Park. Final Wars still remains as my least favorite Millennium Godzilla film. It's not the worst Godzilla film, it's still a good movie. I like it for what it is, but I always felt that Godzilla deserved better. I just hope that Godzilla's 70th anniversary gives us a film that's not so divisive on the fandom.

I disagree on the suits and explosions. Being over the top is the director's style, and I love how stylish this movie is. It wears it's craziness on it's sleeve, and I love that. It's it's own brand of Godzilla movie that we'll likely never see again.

The suits always did look a bit more power ranger-y in movement but I’m mostly fine with it, all the same the fights should have been longer. Like whats the point for adding all those monsters if they barely do anything?? My boy hedorah got it the worst!

Hmm, I guess I never got the feeling that Godzilla was sidelined in the film. To me it felt more like build up, and then once Godzilla was released halfway through there seemed to be a nice balance between scenes with the human characters and Godzilla decimating the other monsters. Though I admit I first watched Final Wars with no preconceived notions, as I hadn't followed the production and thus was not hyped for it.

Gungelion Depends on the time line, for the most part Godzilla is his name.
In the Monsterverse Godzilla’s species is Titanus Gojira of which their is at least one other known individual that being Dagon. Otherwise he is really then only individual, I mean in the hesiei era he both he and Godzilla jr are mutated Godzillasaurus which are a fictional species of dinosaur(Not to be confused with the real Gojirasaurus a species of dinosaur named after Godzilla) which come to think of it is named after the individual monster so it’s kinda up in the air.

    Godzilla Final Wars rewrite
Now Godzilla Final Wars is a movie I find highly entertaining, yet incredibly flawed and I see a lot of missed potential within it, and this video has inspired me to come up with this rewrite.
But first a disclaimer before I go forward. This version takes place within the same continuity of the Kiryu saga and takes place 1 year after Tokyo S.O.S, and because of that I will be changing elements of that film, such as Kiryu still having the absolute zero Cannon intact and when Kiryu lands in the ocean with Godzilla he activates it causing a good portion of the ocean to be frozen sealing the two of them in. With that out of the way let’s begin.
We start the movie after Godzilla against Mechagodzilla where we see in between that film and Tokyo S.O.S Godzilla met a female of his species and began a relationship with her. We then cut to that rewritten ending mentioned previously and we cut to the opening credits, though this time they aren’t edited to endure a seizure.
Now a year after Godzilla is frozen we see monsters running amuck due to the absence of the king, which is what establishes the Earth Defence Force although they are just specially trained soldiers not Mutants. The only superhuman member is a robot named Jet Jaguar. As usual in the film the characters discover an ancient monster called Gigan and are told it’s origins by the Shobijin but this time with the added detail that he was accompanied by several other monsters.
Next up is when the monsters are subdued by new Kaiju (Megalon, Mogu, Hedorah, Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah) and are seemingly teleported away by alien ships. The aliens reveal themselves as Xiliens, they also have the sudden support of politicians and they reveal their leader, a friendly monster called Keizer that can telepathically talk.
The earth defence force soon become suspicious and the events that happened in the film happen as per usual but when X kills the original leader due to getting bored with the peaceful method, he is scolded by Keizer but the monster is forced to continue with a full on invasion, releasing the captured monsters and accompanying them with their own monsters.
Captain Gordon then realises that the aliens are invading due to Godzilla’s absence and so decides to head out and free him. Before heading out the members that met the Shobijin are contacted by the fairies again to discuss the matter. Part of the conversation are people from the underwater empire Mu, who said they’d send out their guardian Manda to help them free Godzilla.
When the Gotengo reaches where the containment Godzilla is sealed in they blow up the ice imprisonment but are attacked by Gigan. Manda later appears and gets Godzilla out of the webbing and then using his supernatural powers wakes Godzilla up. After which Godzilla blasts Gigan out of the sky, to which Manda drags Gigan underwater and then summons other sea monsters to drag the cyborg further down. After that, Manda and the Gotengo guide Godzilla to each monster rampage. We next cut to the female Godzilla from earlier, sensing her mate is free and with her child she sets off to find him.
Godzilla and Manda arrive in Sydney to take on Zilla and Mogu. They easily dispatch Zilla but don’t kill him. Mogu proves to be more of a challenge, but Manda coils around him and causes Mogu to fly away. Manda then signals to Godzilla to move due to the sea Dragon’s wounds from Gigan and Mogu. Godzilla moves into Paris to take on Megalon and three original monsters (let the creative team go wild on this.). But this time the cyborg bug and his team mates proves to be a challenge. Because of this Jet Jaguar leaves the Gotengo, grows to giant size and helps Godzilla to drive Megalon and the other monsters away.
Next up is Okinawa, which is being attacked by Anguirus, Rodan and Baragon. The 3 are being led by Mechagodzilla and because of this rampage the royal family have awakened their protecter King Caesar to combat the beasts. Godzilla and Jet Jaguar arrive to assist the guardian, and after a difficult battle the 3 organic monsters are knocked out and Mechagodzilla is driven away. But after this, Godzilla needs a take a break before moving forward due to his new bruises and Jet needs to return to the Gotengo for repairs. Caesar however decides to stay in Okinawa to help clean up the damages done to the city.
After a while the Gotengo reaches the Xilien mothership, but after disabling the shield the crew are taken hostage by the Xiliens, all expect Jet who is hidden in the repair room. We next cut to a underwater fight with Godzilla taking on Titanosaurus and Hedorah with Manda back in the picture. This time Manda can’t use his powers to command Titanosaurus due to the mind control, but eventually they manage to knock out Titanosaurus and blast Hedorah out of the ocean.
The Xiliens and Keizer (telepathically) then explain that Keizer recruited the Xiliens from a dying world and promised them earth and it’s dominant species as cattle in exchange of undying loyalty to him. But in order to survive fully in earth’s atmosphere (which is why they are the form of human) they will use King Ghidorah to power their mothership to to change the earth’s atmosphere more to their liking, which while humans will survive in the environment and all other animals won’t.
Godzilla and Manda however arrive to confront King Ghidorah, and so to help the 3 headed dragon with his goal Keizer descends to fight the two earth Kaiju. When seeing Keizer motion toward Ghidorah, the humans notice the two seem close. However Keizer effortlessly knocks Godzilla and Manda to the ground and then summons his previous monsters, Gigan, Mogu, Megalon, Mechagodzilla, Hedorah and and those three original monsters.
Everything seems hopeless until Jet contacts the humans saying he previously hacked into the mind function in the movie ship and disabled it. They are then contacted by the Shobijin who let them know the Mothra twins are coming with a great surprise. The Mothra twins arrive with not only King Caesar but also the now freed Anguirus, Rodan, Baragon and Zilla. It becomes apparent that the two giant Moths helped guide the confused monsters to get back at their enslavers, as well as convincing King Caesar to help protect the rest of the earth. Not only that but the rest of the Earth Defense Force comes in to attack the alien mothership.
So we don’t only focus on the humans vs the Xiliens but also a very well made battle against the two monster teams with each member adding something special to their team. Titanosaurus even enters the battle as the wild card, but this time Manda can control him to attack the opposing side. Eventually humans defeat the Xiliens, destroy their mothership and the all of the space monsters are killed with the exception of Keizer and King Ghidorah. All of the earth monsters are exhausted and lie on the ground to take a rest, but Godzilla keeps his eye on the two remaining enemies.
Realising his power is held by back and understanding the cost of what he’s about to do Keizer seems to apologise towards King Ghidorah who is frightened yet understanding what his master is about to. Keizer then transforms into a Ghidorah himself, now appearing to be much more animalistic with only King Ghidorah getting him to focus on their targets. This is when the humans realise King Ghidorah is Keizer’s son and Keizer created his humanoid form to be more in control of himself even if it would reduce power.
Keizer then overwhelms Godzilla, King attacking any monsters trying to help him. Keizer then begins to take Godzilla’s life force so then the humans like in the original movie decide to give Godzilla energy to fight back. Godzilla then begins to fight back, inspiring the other monsters to rise back up and assist in battling the Ghidorahs. They eventually help Godzilla in throwing the two into the air and all monsters with a beam attack blast the space dragons out of earth and into the sun.
Godzilla then turns to the humans on the ground, still wanting to settle a score. But suddenly Godzilla spots his mate to which he hasn’t in a year and stops even further when he notices a little Godzilla next to her. Despite being very emotional, Godzilla starts to go further with his war on humanity, but the baby Godzilla, Minilla gets in the way begging his father to stop, even local children come in and get in the way of the human army, begging the same thing.
Godzilla then looks at his mate, and she just gives a look asking him to do what will make their son happy. Godzilla then decides to turns away and leave his grudge against humanity. As he turns he notices the earth monsters marvelling at him, now feeling respect toward him, rather than fear. They then decide to follow Godzilla and his family as their allies. Before going into the ocean Godzilla motions towards Manda, the Mothra twins, King Caesar and Jet Jaguar, giving his respect to them. The humans then just stand there, marvelling at what an amazing creature Godzilla is and realising that earth is safer with him as opposed without him.
So what do you all think of this?

There's a shot in this movie that illustrates your point perfectly. During the final battle, Godzilla and Monster-X are on a monitor in the background while the Human hero and Alien villain are fighting in the foreground. The camera even zooms in on the monsters as if saying "this movie is totally about the kaiju. Seriously." Also, even as a kid watching this film, I never bought how Godzilla took the hit from the meteor. He should have been knocked off his feet at the very least. And I always did have issues with Mothra's portrayal. I think this may be her weakest depiction on film ever. Her ancient rivalry with Gigan suggests she can stand up to him, so to speak, but Gigan gets a temporary victory against her faster than Godzilla did against him. Speaking of that fight, was Gigan expecting his built-in buzz-saw to cut Godzilla in half or something? I still think this film is entertaining, and I love the Godzilla design and its King of the Monsters track, but overall I'd still say it's easily in the list of top 10 worst Godzilla films. So much for the 50th year of Godzilla. At least year 60 was great.

I agree with every point in this video, but I wholeheartedly agree with #2 the most. I simply do not like characters being overpowered at all, not just Godzilla but everything in general, it's a cheap cop-out, it only brings up a lotta questions, and it removes all sense of drama and suspense. If you're gonna overpower yer character, it should be the max limit and it should only be a very rare, one time occurrence (maybe twice or thrice), not something they can willingly do all the time, and should only be when delivering a final blow, which is why I love how Burning Godzilla was done in KOTM.
Don't know 'bout you, but I prefer "nerfing" characters if it means I get to cheer for them more when they overcome their weaknesses, and Godzilla's power level should only be limited to his own strength and breath, nuclear pulse be used rarely, and Burning Godzilla or any OP ability should be ultra rare, circumstantial, & out of his control.

Final Wars felt like a TV movie. It felt like an Ultraman or Kamen Rider movie, NOT a Godzilla movie. As mentioned the suits look cheap and rushed, and the fights don't do anything to push or make the monsters you remember from your childhood in any way a threat. They're all fodder and the fights have no tension buildup or drama to them. It didn't feel like a love letter or celebration, it was just Godzilla destroying everyone, which may sound good, except many of these kaiju fought alongside Godzilla and were fan favorites, and watching them get massacred wasn't enjoyable, and then the main villain just being Ghidorah instead of something original was also a letdown.

Some fans compare King of the Monsters 2019 to Final Wars a lot (and not usually in a flattering way) but honestly I find the former superior to the latter. It wasn't perfect of course but unlike Final Wars it at least focused on the monsters as the subject of the film and it at least explained almost (and I stress almost) everything it showed off that was important, as opposed to Final Wars which threw around comic book terms nobody will remember in 5 seconds and not explain most of what it brings up well enough.

I don't thing FinalGoji is THAT powerful. He's not the toughest or strongest Godzilla incarnation. The fight scenes were quick because Toho didn't have the budget to get those fights well made, they just want to get the movie done. Final Wars wasn't perfect. But it's still my favorite of the Millennium. I always love Gigan's design, I thought Monster X was cool, and I adore Godzilla's design more than any Millennium designs...even though it's not my favorite, I do prefer the Heisei and MonsterVerse designs more. Final Wars does have huge problems I see, I still don't know why is Minilla in the movie, I don't think Keizer Ghidorah is THAT tough compared to a few others like MonsterVerse Ghidorah or Destoroyah, Godzilla is not the toughest at all, why is Gigan weak compared to his Showa counterpart, why was Hedorah just there, I don't know. It's just a cheesier version of Destroy All Monsters. Similar to how I say KOTM is a darker version of Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster.

Its like when Ron Howard directed How the Grinch Stole Christmas; both men are talented directors, but in both cases, they were making movies that they were hopelessly ill-equipped to make, and it shows (though, with Kitamura, when I originally watched this movie, I couldn't escape the feeling that Kitamura actively hated Godzilla, and was constantly snubbing the daikaiju genre as a whole by downplaying ALL of the kaiju action for the boring-in-2004-even-worse-in-2020 Matrix-style nonsense). This movie just... hurts my heart.

Wow, quite an intriguing intake if i must admit. Basically, many things you've said are already being the things that i've been questioning this whole time.
Now, to be fair, even if i don't completely agree with the things you've said, i still appreciate the effort you've taken to genuinely showcased the many flaws of this flick.
Also, i'll just be honest around here. The main reason why i kept watching and adoring Final Wars is because i want to get high. As in i like getting drunk by the sheer ridiculousness of the movie.
Moreover, when the monsters' display of power were put in place in the flick, i always felt giddy everytime i saw them making all the civvies running scared-shitless and made a complete fool of themselves.
Now, if you still firmly consider this as a god-awful entry for the 50th anniversary of the Big G, i won't blame you for it. Heck, this movie also had the same predicament of being one of the massively divisive movie following the G-98 while predating the KoTM, so i'm not completely surprised if there are some people like you who don't like it.
Well, that's the piece of a thought from me to you and i do hope you'll eventually make that top 15 worst kaiju movie list of all time video (especially before GvK appear).

Godzilla Final Wars isn't one of my top favourite Godzilla movies but its better than that dreadful Day of the Doctor movie because that sucked! Lord do I hate that dr who 50th anniversary special so much! It was a complete waste of my time and to make matters! Everybody said that I was excited for it which wasn't true! (breathing heavily) got to calm down, sorry about that.

Don Frye is indeed The Man. It's not often that a gaijin actor plays my favorite character in a Japanese film. He should have become an action star.

I respect your opinion After looking back on the movie the movie didn’t really age that well a little bit and I only love you because of nostalgic reason because I really loved watching it when I was a kid because I used to cheer me up when I was in a dark times but I can see your reasonings I do agree that the designs of the suits could be a little bit better the story could’ve been a little bit more mature but other than that this movie is pretty good it’s not the best Godzilla movie but I love it and appreciate it because it is my first Godzilla movie ever watching the first impression of Godzilla was great so I appreciate this movie but I can see your reasoning for not liking it and I have some problems with the movie is not perfect

According to your information Omni, if you don't want it to happen again, then maybe film directors don't need to revisit this movie, while they're making a Godzilla movie.

The main reason I didn't like FW was that it felt more like a Japanese action movie that just happened to have Godzilla in it. Like these people were making an action movie and almost done and were all: "OH SHIT, THERE'S SUPPOSED TO BE GODZILLA IN THIS!"

  • @steelerex9839

While I admit I like Godzilla Final Wars, I agree with you on the overpowered Godzilla. Design wise, he's unique and I like it, but seeing him defeat enemy after enemy without breaking a sweat, which I liked when I was younger but now, it's too much on Godzilla's part and not enough on the others. It's a real shame. 😔

I watched every singel Godzilla movie ever made.
And Final Wars is the nr 1 worst Godzilla movie I have ever watched.
The music is wrong, the early 2000s edgy teen angst tone is outdated and not fit for a Godzilla movie, bad cgi, too fastpaced fights, odd editing choices, messy uninteresting storytelling and character's etc. I hated final wars so much I could barely even finish watching it.

Minilla was always a "plot hole" in the original films
we can just assume he's related to and knew Godzilla at some point and his goal is to meat up with him because he got lost, its not super blatant about it but its implied

I like the movie now. But I still completely agree with every point in this video! Basically now, I just turn my brain "off" for the film. But when my brain is "on" I agree with everything you said.
