      @@omniviewer2115 The problem is, there's a relatively, or even pretty big divide in the fandom as to whether or not the quality has declined already when it comes to the Monsterverse. Also, I see some things/tendencies about the Monsterverse that make me think the longer it will go on, the bigger the chance that the Monsterverse will be the catalyst for/will cause the next Godzilla hiatus will be. I also don't get how some people could be so comfortable with another hiatus happening again, since historically, Toho got more and more discouraged with every hiatus, and because why are the people making the movies still aren't trying to find out why the hiatuses happened and what could be done differently to delay the next hiatus as much as possible?

    I know you aren't too into the whole "who would win in a fight" side of fandom culture, but as someone who is, I find the fact that the Monsterverse has outdone all its competitors so poetic with your analysis of Final Wars' attitude towards Godzilla. My reason for this is because currently in the vs community, Legendary Godzilla's most popular adversary (besides the walking chew toy that is Shin Godzilla) is FinalGoji. And yet, no matter how people analyze these two, in an all out battle, Legendary Godzilla always comes out on top against FinalGoji.
    It's like the Monsterverse itself is responding to Final Wars, saying "no matter what may happen, this series will never die. It may face adversity, it may go into hibernation, it may occasionally lose its way, but the king of the monsters will reign forever."

    • @omniviewer2115
      @omniviewer2115  5 месяцев назад +8

      That could very well be the case. Whenever the next hibernation occurs - and I'm sure it will at some point - it'll only be for a season.

      Chalk that up to the form-fitting suits again. Other Rodan designs make the wings look like wings. FW Rodan emphasizes the actor's arms, making it look like he's wearing a cape attached to his hands. This might have been justifiable if he did some grappling, but he doesn't.
      Still, barring that, I like the other details.

    Godzilla's bulk has been confirmed multiple times to be more muscle than anything. On top of this his many nuclear organs need a lot of space in there, and his bulky frame fit them well, at least for the Heisei series. Ironically too, this hefty look has been established for one of Godzilla's inspirations T.rex.

    Great video Omni! I always liked Final Wars, it's campy but it's a good and entertaining campy! The Godzilla suit so-so, It's slim like the Gyakushu-goji suit. The face is semi-mean & semi comical like the the Titano-goji suits face. When final-goji's mouth is closed he resembles a chipmunk or a cat. I love the Rodan suit despite the fact that it looks like it was designed by Jim Henson's creature shop as a villain for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles or Dark Crystal. I like the Gigan suit it's decent but it looks like it was loosely based on the trendmasters Gigan toy. I wouldn't mind having a snazzy figure after watching this video.

    I appreciate Final Wars but sadly it’s one of my least watched films in the franchise due to how uneven it is. Also I didn’t think to put wolves and foxes into account with Godzilla’s Final Wars design, which frankly fits him considering he is both tough and wiley in the film, and I’ve loved that characterization whenever it showed up both here and in other films.

    • @omniviewer2115
      @omniviewer2115  5 месяцев назад +4

      @alexkogan9755 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@omniviewer2115 Yeah, from the side the face looks off, but from the front it looks much better and more telling with regards to the fox/wolf aesthetic, and it’s a good look for Godzilla in that regard that I wouldn’t mind seeing come back again in some respect (again I love it when he is given that more wiley personality to balance out his more brutish tendencies, as it makes him more intelligent than he comes across, kinda like Conan the Barbarian where that character gives the impression to others that he’s a dumb giant when in reality he’s scary brilliant). Also I liked how Godzilla’s eyes were covered over in shadow much of the time in Final Wars, which to me made him more intimidating. That’s not something that I think happens a lot (it happened in Biollante and Vs King Ghidorah previously I believe), so I like it when it does happen.

    I would say the main problem with the film was them completely skipping over how the aliens and monsters destroyed the whole world. They kind of just go from the scene where the monsters are released to everything being destroyed. (At least that is what was stated)
    I also think Minilla in this film was the worst version of the monster. You have Son of Godzilla which doesn't do well with the designs of the monsters, but still does a great job with the characterization of the monsters and showing their relationship.
    You also have the Heisei Godzilla films which show Godzilla's relationship with his son very well throughout three films.
    Minilla in this film felt added in last minute, and the ending is probably one of the worst in the series. Minilla was also way too humanoid with how he was shown in this film.
    The ending also doesn't really make sense. The Gotengo basically saves Godzilla, yet Godzilla tries to destroy it.
    It would have been far more impactful is the Gotengo was not able to fly, but was able to use it's laser and change Godzilla up. After Keizer Ghidorah was defeated, Godzilla could have recognized that they saved him and he went off into the ocean.
    This would have been a much better ending to not only this film, but to the series. Something like this was done in Godzilla vs Kong 2021, which I think was done very well and would have been a good ending to the monsterverse if it had to be.

    Final wars is an inconsistent movie for me because it is so over the top and filled to the brim with matrix references, kung fu or martial arts action, and being more about throwing as much to the screen as possible, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Godzilla. I enjoyed the film for what it was, not only because of nostalgia, but because some of it was quite fun to watch, and I do like what this film was aiming for, but that is precisely its fatal flaw: It is the 50th anniversary celebration without feeling like it because of how cobbled together and rushed it felt. I generally agree with your critiques, but I’m more forgiving of it because of its fondness and charm, essentially big, dumb kaiju flick that is well out together, but missing the bigger picture.

    I think you’ve been looking at Final Wars the wrong way for a long time. What I see is a Godzilla film that takes every single weakness, every critique, every thing the franchise has been mocked for and just rolls with it, turning it into its strength. This is objectively an awful film
    Bad effects
    Bad writing
    Bad dialogue
    Bad dubbing
    Over the top acting
    Uninteresting human characters
    Low monster screen time
    Ripping off contemporary media
    You name it, it has it all. But it’s embraced in such a way that you can see it as a perfect yet positive representative of the other half of Godzilla as a franchise. Now you have Minus One as an exemplar of Godzilla at its best when it’s taken seriously, but Final Wars is the epitome of entertainment and a good time.
    I have a small friend group of 5 (‘e included) in which every Monday night we just watch a movie, there’s me and one other friend who are huge Kaiju fans, one of whose unfamiliar yet open minded, and two who typically don’t care about Kaiju-eiga. We had put these films on on different occasions and both times the two friends that didn’t care for Godzilla were now deeply invested in the idea of seeing more out of the franchise. Despite both films being polar opposites of each other, both ended having the same result even if it was for different reasons.

    • @omniviewer2115

      As I said, my biggest issue with it was how it seemed like the movie was waving the white flag by the end. At the time, it just felt like Toho saying, "Oh well, we gave it the old college try. Time to take Godzilla out behind the shed."
      Time has passed, and it turned out to simply be a brief time. As such, I'm letting that part go.
      Seeing it in a theater where everyone was going nuts for it certainly helped me get there.

    honestly if I held the reigns for Godzilla's supposed finale, I would have pulled a Zelda: Breath of the Wild and have Final Wars be the finale to all previous timelines regardless of canon. I'm thinking something along the lines of, the future humans from Godzilla vs Ghidorah 1991 (who it is revealed that they had previously wiped the Showa series from existence) try their luck again only for the JSDF or EDF whichever you prefer to attempt to stop them from screwing with the timeline anymore, accidentally unleashing monsters and blending people with alt versions of themselves from multiple universes into the current one leading to a three Godzilla tag team royal bash between monsters of Godzilla's history before finally both man and monster teaming up to destroy Keizer Gihdorah.

    • @omniviewer2115

    It's fun for what it is, but in terms of the writing it's probably the worst of the millennium series. I think it had way too many kaiju, leaving a lot of returning characters feel like an afterthought. I think Kamakiras, Kumonga, Mothra, and Zilla should have been cut.
    Yes, I don't like the inclusion of Zilla in this movie, not because I like Godzilla 1998 (heck no), but because he feels out of place in this movie. His inclusion feels like a direct fourth wall break, it would be like if Gamera randomly showed up in this movie just so Godzilla could kill him off. And Zilla being here doesn't add anything to the movie.
    As for Mothra, she's just as useless as she was in Tokyo S.O.S (even reuses the same puppet), only landing two hits on Modified Gigan. Yes, I know sacrifice is a motif of Mothra's stories, but I don't think that she should be so underpowered that sacrifice is the only effective option. My alternative to her inclusion would be to give her role to King Caesar instead. And Kamakiras and Kumonga are total jobbers, hardly able to do anything against Godzilla.
