- I call this the "fruit fly's downfall."
This is an old video and yes, completely non-related to fitness. However, now that the weather is warming up in some places, I wanted to share this lifehack that has helped me out a lot.
Even very clean houses sometimes get fruit flies. They simply find a way.

I have done this often (minus the soap). It works but a couple tips: tie a rubber band around the top and be careful not to make holes too big. These are the two areas I noticed they may crawl back out of before getting to the liquid.

Okay I'm doing a nerd report that is not what the soap does. The soap actually reduces the surface tension of the vinegar once the fly touches the vinegar to drink it he gets sucked in and drowns

I tried this and i forgot the sound effects. After 3 days of trial and error, I realized my mistakes. I proceeded to try it once more with the sound effects, and the results were astonishing.

Actually a lot easier way is to just leave an open glass of wine and the fruit flies get drunk and drown in it 😁 when you think about it you give them some bliss before their end

I’ve done this, but you don’t have to put plastic wrap over the top,... just leave it open! They drown in it and it will take a couple days or so and they will be gone! Those little bastards multiply I swear! 😆

@@pamelaselevich4713 not so much. regular flies seem to prefer something more solid upon which to lay their eggs. the fly strips you hang from the ceiling seem to work well. they're ugly, but fairly effective

But sure, all creatures should be dead one day. It's a part of life.
The dishsoap is necessary as it breaks surface tension and fruit flies have the ability to land on water because they are so small they can use surface tension to stay on top of the liquid. So if you don't add the dishsoap, they'll be happily landing on the liquid and the only thing that will keep them in there is the plastic with massive (relative to a fruit fly) holes in it. But with the dishsoap, they'll land and fall under the liquid. It's not the slippery sides that's doing it.

Funny story here: I’m Australian and when travelling from Victoria to South Australia, there’s a border checkpoint that does checks for fruit because Victoria has fruit flies and South Australia doesn’t and they don’t want an infestation so if you try to bring fruit across you can get fined. One time when I was taking a bus across, the bus driver said before we left “I should let you know that you are not allowed to bring fruit across the border so if anyone has any please speak up now” and no one said anything, then the driver said “I should also let you know that if they do find fruit in your bag you will get a fine and we will leave you behind” and this guy suddenly jumped up and said “Oh, I’ve got some watermelon in my bag!” And the bus driver said “Just as I thought” and let him grab it out of his bag and throw it away

If you throw a piece of fruit or fruit peel in it works even better. Tropical is best. The flies can smell so they can find the way in but the holes are too small to find the way out. Fish soap is to kill them. It works in the garden also. Been doing this for over 20yrs. It works

Get fly traps, they work really well also
If they're that bad, keep a roll of duct tape on you and hold a strip in front as you walk. Or get a pet brown bat. Either way take this as a lesson that sound and intent matters.

The soap actually breaks the vinegars surface tension so the flies drown.
The soap trick works by making the liquid loose it’s surface tension…doing this in a mosquito breeding pond also will drown the larva and mosquitoes since they can’t stay at the surface, so they drown. We use this same principle in film development to make the water slick and run off film better as it dries.

My grandma made these while she was canning the fruit that my grandparents grew in the family orchard. (It started as a “Victory Garden” during WW2)
I didn't do the sound effects and now the flies have evolved and are doing calisthenics better than me
they've also taken control of the house and I am now in the closet cowering in fear of my new fruit fly overlords

When I was a child (about 8 or 9) my apartment had a fruit fly infestation. They were everywhere. In our beds, food, bathroom, literally everywhere. My mom would just buy cheap wine and leave it open. Took care of the problem almost instantly because of the grapes.

The detergent actually breaks the surface tension of the water. Normally fruit flies are so small that they can actually walk on most liquids including vinegar. The detergent breaks the surface tension and the flies immediately get stuck in the liquid or sink either way they drown.

Actually the detergent reduces the surface tension of the vinegar causing the fruit flies to sink below the surface as opposed to support themselves atop it. Surface tension is a much stronger effect for tiny stuff like fruit flies.

@@yes-nc4vo I agree that any and all suffering is bad, but I'm pretty sure small insects don't have pain receptors like humans do. They can sense when they are damaged, but they don't feel pain like if a human cut themselves. They also don't have emotions like stress and stuff, so we probably don't have to worry too much.

Hey brothers and sisters! The main reason for the dish soap is more scientific and interesting than just slipperiness! You see, fruit flies don’t normally drown when they drink because they are so small and light that they don’t break the surface tension of the water. But soap (especially dish soap) is a surfactant which reduces the surface tension causing the fluid to stick to them, they get sucked under, and then drown.

I use a gatorade bottle, follow the same steps filling with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish detergent. Put Saran Wrap over the opening of the bottle and make sure you take a rubberband and wrap it around to keep the Saran wrap tight, then I just poked one hole in the center of the Saran Wrap and let the work begin. When all the flies have went in the bottle take the cap screw it back on and throw the whole thing away. Easy cleanup.

My grandma just simply places any upside down bowl on top of any food to prevent anything from touching it 😂
My mom does the same, but these guys always end up crawling underneath. Will definitely try this trick when they come back in summer.

It’s true, I tried one with sound effects, and one without sound effects. The one with sound effects worked fine, But not the one without.
If you don't want to use plastic wrap, you can also fill the glass up wth hot water so suds form. The fruit flies drown in the liquid but also can't climb out of the suds. This also works for fleas if your pet got some on him/her. Use a fine tooth flea comb to get the little pest out of the fur, pinch the little sucker btwn your thumb and index finger so it won't get loose and just stick your digits in the dish detergent.
I’ve been doing things for years as I love making banana bread, and fruit flies love over ripe bananas almost as much as I do. So Yes this does actually work!
I just use fresh fruit scraps with a little water in the bottom. We named ours hotel California.
I've used this quite a bit, it also works for house flies. The plastic on top is unnecessary in my experience.

If you think it's cruel, you can put fruit in the jar instead like a banana...and make a paper funnel that has a small hole in the end. Place the funnel down into the jar and tape in place around the rim. When the jar fills, take it outside and pull the funnel out and shake the flies out outside.

So I work in produce and if this is to clear out some fruit flies if you had some spoilage and you got rid of it this is totally the way to go. However, if you have a persistent fruit fly problem please look into your trash, pantry, or general food storage because fruit flies don't hang around long unless they're breeding somewhere nearby and need a food source. Likely spoiled food. Find what they're eating and throw away and sanitize the area and you'll be good

It's not cruel at all, insects can't think, feel pain, or really even understand that anything is wrong; they might be a little confused and hungry is all.

The detergent doesn't just make the walls slippery, it also breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, allowing it to wet the fly in between any small hairs that would normally waterproof it. For the same reason, cockroaches can stay alive underwater, but soapy water drowns them
