    ARC is excellent for most home use applications and simplifies cabling.

      I get this comment a lot. Many people don’t have a problem with ARC but there are a lot of people that struggle with the side effects. The only benefit is to use the tv for streaming. A blu-ray player or appletv can handle the streaming and eliminate the need to use ARC. Thanks for watching.

      I use an antenna for TV so ARC connects from my Samsung 49" smart TV to my tx-nr757 onkyo so the receiver can not only get the sound from the air signal, but uses the return audio channel to send control signals each way. The ARC channel also helps when using a cable box because the box needs to check that it's output is not going to a recorder.

      My main problem with ARC is that everything runs great most of the time but every once in a while, the user tries to do something outside of normal ARC operation and messes up the inputs or equipment power settings and the end user (usually my non a/v savvy customer) gets confused and can’t get it back on track. For that reason, we always turn it off and let the custom remote handle the controls.

      Your speaker system is a sub that connects to 2 speakers correct? Just connect the Zone 2 speaker outputs on the amp to the speaker inputs on the back of the Bose subwoofer. Then connect the two small speakers to the back of your subwoofer. Connect your CD player to the amplifier using RCA cables NOT an optical cable. That should do it.

    I am kind of a noob to this so forgive my ignorance. If optical is primarily for audio and HDMI does video and audio, why would you use an optical cable and an HDMI cable connection to the TV? Wouldn't HDMI be sufficient? Thanks for the video.

    • @AlanCleggYouDoAV
      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  7 лет назад +5

      GREAT question. The HDMI cable will carry video to the TV and even though it CAN carry audio, the audio will just stay in your receiver so you can enjoy those surround sound speakers. The optical cable will carry audio OUT of the TV and IN to the receiver so you can stream Netflix on your TV and still use your surround sound speakers. The HDMI can carry audio out of the TV by itself if you enable the Audio Return Channel (ARC) but that creates a host of undesirable side effects so I forbid you to do that. The best solution: connect the receiver to the TV with an HDMI, turn off the ARC feature, and stream your content through a Blu-ray player or Roku or something similar.

So instead of a single HDMI cable going from TV to receiver I need to add another cable... say, optical. Cool. Any advice on which input HDMI slot to use on the receiver... keep using the ARC and just turn off ARC. If I do this, which optical input on the receiver to use? I tried moving the TV HDMI over to #1 HDMI inputs and put the optical into #1, turned off ARC and no joy. Use the ARC output on the receiver but disable the ARC feature. You can use an optical for the TV audio, but I recommend you just do your streaming on another device like a Blu-ray player, AppleTV, or Roku. If you really want to use the TV, use the optical and land it on any free optical input on the receiver. You're probably going to have to adjust the settings in the receiver though. You need to assign the input to something that isn't being used by something else. Once you've done that, you need to make sure the TV is sending audio OUT from the TV (done in the settings). My guess is this is the step that you're missing now. That should do it. Thanks for watching and good luck.

      An amplifier simply powers the speakers. A receiver controls audio AND video and includes internal sources such as a radio tuner, XM, or music streaming services. A receiver also has an amplifier built in.

    So Alan how would you go about it if your surrounds are built geared towards dolby Atmos. I know in your video you say you hate ARC. What is another alternative? Finally did all the wiring but now stuck with an extender that sends thru arc one way only. Company said the Receiver will connect to ARC port on my Projector and Sender will connect to your Marantz. However, the ARC is returned back from the sender via optical drop out unless I bought the $300 one instead of the 230. SMH. I might try my luck at running a 35 feet fiber optic 4k HDR HDMI. MY av rack to project is only about 10-15 foot away but i have to factor from ceiling to ground.

    • @AlanCleggYouDoAV
      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  3 года назад

      I am not sure I am understanding what you are asking. Are you using ARC to turn on the projector? You can use a 12v trigger from your receiver to the projector or you can use a remote control. To use the remote, either run a blaster cable (just two small wires) from the remote receiver on your AV rack or add an additional receiver on your projector. You can use an ARC HDMI port, just do not turn on the ARC feature. You shouldn't need to use ARC to bring audio from the projector. There shouldn't be any audio coming from the projector.

      @@AlanCleggYouDoAV aghhh understood thank you. Sorry if I can’t off confusing. Bought an OREI extender with ArC. I have it under the impression that to run Dolby atmos u need arc only. I’m now at the point of configuring my first ever AV receiver lol. Cutting drywall in wall, in-ceiling and wiring with the wet noodle u suggested made it easy Lee you. Now that that’s down it felt like it was the easy part. Long story short I could have made it easy on myself and just placed my aV rack on the other side of the family room but instead I went with having everything wired to a centralized location in a closet with plenty of room. I’ve spent this much already for premium sound so I can’t just settle for just Dolby 5.1.

      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  3 года назад +1

      @@FMD023 ARC=Audio Return Channel. Typically you send 1-way audio and video from one device to another. In the case of a surround sound system, the receiver sends audio and video to the TV. If people want to stream Netflix on their TV, they need to backfeed the audio from the TV to the receiver OR they can use ARC built into the HDMI cable. ARC used to only carry low quality audio back to the receiver but eARC allows you to carry higher quality formats such as Dolby Atmos. Enabling ARC/eARC introduces control problems so I always turn it off. You won't be streaming Netflix on your projector anyway, so you will not need to use ARC/eARC either. Your streaming device should be sitting on the rack (AppleTV, Roku, BluRay player, etc).

    My new Onn TV does not want to recognize the computer if the HDMI comes from the output of the reciever, only if the HDMI from the computer is connected directly to TV. Although come to think of it, in both cases I have connected the Optical cable from TV to the reciever if that makes a difference. I wonder why it would.
    Also when I go on RUclips which I spent most my time at, Playing youtube directly from TV and receiver, the sound is 20 times louder, than through the computer. It almost gave me a heart attack today when I happen to stumble on it. I just purchased this tv yesterday.
    My previous TV was able to recognize the computer either way. The previous TV had one HDMI. and this one has 4 but that just gives you 4 HDMI options. My reciever has 4 hdmi input.

      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  Год назад

      Interesting. Are you sure the receiver is setup properly? It’s possible that the input selection is incorrect or needs some setup in the receiver menus. I would thoroughly test this to make sure the setup and programming is correct before anything else. If you’re setup is correct, it sounds like the receiver might not be able to process the HDMI signal. That can be due to a frame rate or resolution issue or something of that sort. Optical audio cabling should not affect anything.
      The volume on your computer is likely turned down so that you have to turn your receiver away up. Then when you play the sound from another source, you get blasted. You have to turn the volume on the computer all the way up or set it to “fixed audio output” in the computer menus.

      Leave the HDMI from the receiver to the TV. That is correct. Plug your computer into the receiver in ANY free HDMI input. It does t have to say PC. The label is only there to help you select the correct input on the receiver so you don’t forget where things are plugged in. Once your connections are done, you should just select the corresponding input on the receiver and your PC will appear on your TV. That’s the benefit of using HDMI switching through a receiver.

    • @AlanCleggYouDoAV
      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  6 лет назад

      No. HDMI upscaling is taking a different signal and turning it into HDMI. For example, you can take a standard yellow RCA video cable and upscale it to HDMI. Maybe you have an old video camera using standard yellow video so you plug it into your receiver. The receiver upscales the camera signal to HDMI and sends it to the TV via an HDMI cable simplifying your wiring scheme and upgrading video quality. HD pass-through is when your receiver doesn't modify the audio or video signal at all and simply "passes it through" to the TV unmodified.

      If you have an HDMI connection that also carries sound, all you have to do is connect the HDMI from the computer to any HDMI input on the receiver. If the video doesn't come on, you'll have to adjust the PC settings to tell it that you connected a second screen and want it to mirror your regular screen. My guess is that an HDMI coming off the motherboard will carry the sound, but HDMI coming off a sound card may only carry video. If it doesn't carry audio, you will have to use the pre-outs from the PC to the pre-out inputs on the receiver.

    • @AlanCleggYouDoAV
      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  5 лет назад

      I'm referring to an infrared red blaster for remote control systems. If you're using some kind of RF base station for your remote control, you're going to need to use infrared red blasters from the base station to blast the front of each device. Nice receivers have IR inputs on the back so you can connect a 3.5 mm mini directly into the back of the receiver. It's way more reliable in the short and long term. Typically, base stations have 3.5 mm minis for the IR blasters so you would just use a 3.5 mm mini to mini cable to connect the base station directly to the receiver.

    Thanks for all the info and the last time I hooked up a surround sound was about 15 years ago and things have changed, Question - I want to incorporate my two stereo systems into a surround sound system. The two stereo systems each use separate Krell integrated and they each use two martin logan speakers. I would like to set up a 5.1 using one stereo system for the front two and one stereo system for the two surrounds and I have a Martin Logan front speaker I could hook up to the processor as well as a veladyne sub which I would also hook up to the processor (Integra Receiver bought about 3 years ago). Does that sound feasible using the zone out / pre out and which ones do I use - the pre or Zone. Or should I just hook everything through the surround receiver. Thanks

    • @AlanCleggYouDoAV
      @AlanCleggYouDoAV  6 лет назад

      That COULD work, but I think you should only do that if your main receiver is under-powered to handle your speakers. You will use the pre-outs. "Zone" is for controlling speakers in a different room. Pre-out from your receiver to one of the inputs on the amp. Make sure you connect the RIGHT FRONT PREOUT to the RIGHT CHANNEL INPUT on your amp. Same for left and surround back. That's a lot of equipment to involve and a lot of adjustments to make it balanced. If a kid comes up and adjusts the volume, balance, or inputs on one of your slave receivers/amps, you'll have to adjust it back in. Then you have to make sure they power on/off together and remain on the right inputs. Sounds like a headache, but it can be done. Does that make sense?

    • @johncbrownmd
      @johncbrownmd 6 лет назад

      Thanks Alan and it makes sense to keep everything in the processor. Thanks for the quick response and too bad you do not install in Miami.
