The basic mirror shape, with the design on the back, was cast flat, and the convexity of the surface produced afterwards by elaborate scraping and scratching. The surface was then polished to become shiny. The stresses set up by these processes caused the thinner parts of the surface to bulge outwards and become more convex than the thicker portions. Finally, a mercury amalgam was laid over the surface, this created further stresses and preferential buckling. The result was that imperfections of the mirror surface matched the patterns on the back, although they were too minute to be seen by the eye. But when the mirror reflected bright sunlight against a wall, with the resultant magnification of the whole image, the effect was to reproduce the patterns as if they were passing through the solid bronze by way of light beams.
The video description said that there were versions of this mirror which didn't match their reflection and their carving. Would those have been made by the same process and cut in half to be soldered to a new back plate, or would they have been made differently? (Incidentally, I've got a design in my head for a modern reverse version of this mirror with just a flat piece of glass and some chemistry tricks.)

One side of this backplate is polished until it is highly reflective. Then the bottom glass layer is made by pouring molten glass onto the reflective side of the backplate. Reflective coating is then applied, but this coating is thinner than usual for normal mirrors, ie some light can pass through. The top glass layer is then placed on top of this reflective coat

No. These things are an old art and originated in the time of Bronze mirrors. Because that matters. You cast the pattern on the backside, then you grind and polish the mirror side. What happens is that the mirror side will not be entirely smoothly flat or convex/concave. There will be minute irregularities that will diverge the light. You can silver or aluminize it, or leave it bronze, doesn't matter. If you wanted to keep it a secret though, you'd put on a false backside.
