  • Endurance cyclists like randonneurs will ride at night... a lot. A good light brings safety and enjoyment to this part of the sport for you and those around you. This video discusses important light qualities to demand, compares the Lumintop BO1 vs. the B&M IQ Premium (two top low end choices), and shares the surprisingly few upmarket models suitable for long distance riding. All without needing to power the dynamo with our meager energy.

    I think you may have miscalculated the energy stored in those AAs.
    An individual eneloop pro stores about 3 Wh of energy.

      You are absolutely correct, thank you. 1.2V, not 3.7. Should be ~11.5-12 watt hours total, given the voltage curve of NiMH. Sorry for the mistake. My next video is another light review (Magicshine EVO 1700) and it more correctly addresses battery capacity at different voltages.

    Just wanted to give an update on the Lumintop BO1. My bathroom light switch broke and the BO1 is temporarily the main bathroom light. It stands on it's end and gives off a comfortable, usable glow. 5 stars, would recommend.

    The Outbound Detour is an awesome light that I use on my travel bike. Self contained battery that works for a 300km brevet, but can also be trickle charged from a large external battery while in use. The Detour has a really good beam pattern, but needs a little fuss to get the cut-off angle just right. On my usual brevet bike, I use the unusual Velogical rim dynamo, which works and looks a lot like the old-fashioned bottle dynamos of old, but runs by contact on the rim. Like the old bottle dynamos, you just move it off the rim during the day for zero resistance. When in use at night, I don't perceive any resistance, but there is a whirring sound that you will either get used to quickly or go mad. I think both work quite well, but if the Detour was available a year earlier, I wouldn't have bothered with the dynamo set up.

      Thanks for the feedback on the Outbound Detour. Everything about it looks nearly ideal and best in class. I'll get wrecked by exchange rates and import duties if I buy it, so I'm hoping one day they decide it beneficial to donate/heavily discount one to a small niche youtube channel halfway across the world so a video could be made about its performance haha. The battery life seems similar to the BO1, which needed trickle charging on 400km+ rides. It's nice you have 2 solid options though. Many conditions benefit from a dynamo.

    Thanks for this. I just acquired a B01. There were just too many good features to pass up at the price of 37 bucks. The light color is rather warm for this type of light and I like it. I just wish it had a standard daylight "flash" mode instead of the funky strobe.

      Glad it was a useful recommendation for you. I've continued using it since the video was posted and have been very happy with it. Perfect for night rides after work, and I've been able to use it on high settings for a 400 and 600k brevet with an 'early to bed' sleep strategy. I dislike flash modes in general as being on the receiving end of them hurts my eyes. Perhaps the low constant setting is best for 'be seen' mode.

    I'm in a quest to find the perfect light for long distance rides AND to ride in the city. Looks like the Lumintop is a good option. I have a similar Rockbros light with replacable battery but no cut off in the beam which is annoying. I'm getting more and more serious into cycling and realize that the industry like to put ''bike specific'' on basic stuff with bike mounts. 95% of bike light are just disguised flashlights. Thanks for the video! You have a new subscriber! 😀

      Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad this was useful for you. The Lumintop is better than what used to be available. That it is so cheap is icing on the cake. The form factor makes it good as a flashlight too. Kind of opposite of what most bike lights are doing. Would still love to get my hands on the Outbound light though.

      It does not have that feature. Is that common these days? The power button is recessed a bit so it doesn't accidentally turn on when packed like all my commodity lights.

    What do you think of headlights? I usually don't ride at night, but just in case I do have a headlight in my bag (apart from some lights on my bike, but those are more designed to be seen by other road users)

      @overbikedrandonneuring  Год назад

      Highly recommend them at night. Much more effective than spidey senses. I strongly prefer STVZO shaped and cutoff lenses, but wish they were a bit brighter. They are limited by regulation. Aside from the BO1 I use now, the Outbound road light would be my top choice under $250.

      @@wazzup105 Ah, I see. Personally, I would carry a second smaller light that attaches to handlebars as a backup before bringing a headlamp. Easy to remove and use as a flashlight for bike repairs or whatever. I find something weird happens to objects when when the light source emits from eye level. Shadows get somewhat hidden by the objects, so depth perception gets skewed. Light from headlamps also bleed over into peripheral vision killing my night vision. Even when I was thru-hiking the AT and PCT, I preferred carrying my light in hand when night hiking to better identify and avoid tripping over rocks, but it was inconvenient. I was daydreaming yesterday about an ideal light setup. 2 beams similar to the BO1 spaced widely apart at about handlebar level. This train of thought is how I end up with some abomination of a bike 6 months from now.

    Hi, I've been using an Exposure Strada light for my night riding duties. Could be worth a look as it has many settings to control the light so you can tailor the battery usage. TTFN

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't look into Exposure much since they don't have shaped beams or hard cutoffs, but I see now the Strada has a switch to turn off the high beam, similar to a car. How have you found that in use? Any experience with the glare with the high beam on and off? Thanks in advance.

    • @JohnnyDudeUK
      @JohnnyDudeUK Год назад +1

      Hi, Thanks for the reply. The high beam does get you a few flashes if you leave it on by accident, but the low setting seems to be fine. The light has 2 leds arranged vertically in the tube and the lower one looks setip to be as shapped dip beam pattern. I have used it on a few dark Audaxes in the last few months and the longest was 5+ hrs of pitch black country lanes here in the UK and it did me proud with the light boost if I needed it.
      I hope this helps you.

      Looks to be discontinued, but replaced with the br35, which also looks competitive. I am currently using the MagicShine CBL1600/EVO1700 over the BO1 and really like it. Strong cutoff, flat consistent light profile, and even enough light to cruise around on the low setting which can last from sunset to sunrise. I hope to make a video on it soon, but finding time is... challenging.

    Wich is best? Lumintop BO1 or Nitecore br25?

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  Год назад +3

      They are quite similar in many ways, on paper at least. Same battery size, but the Lumintop can do trickle charging. The Lumintop overheats in Turbo mode in a few minutes, so it's max output is effectively 550 lumens. I can't say if BR25 overheats in turbo, but it's turbo mode is brighter, but high mode is a bit less bright at 450L. Looks like the BR25 has a cooler tone. Interesting use of circular lens with a reflective hood. I like that innovation. The beam of the BO1 would probably still be more even on the road since it is a shaped reflector beam. The BR25 has a robust, but chunky and heavy mount, where the BO1 mount inspires less confidence and is still not light. I would love to get a BR25 for comparison, as they seem too close in spec to say one way or the other without a head-to-head. It's about double the price of the BO1, but still looks like a great deal. Thanks for putting the BR25 on my radar

    Beam pattern and having a dynamo are not linked. Beam pattern is down to the emitter and the method of focus! Misleading

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  10 месяцев назад +1

      Almost all dynamo lights are designed around STVZO regulations, which limit power/light output and require a cut-off. The result of these limitations is that almost all dynamo lights use a shaped beam pattern of some sort, as a round beam with a cutoff would waste a lot of the limited brightness dynamo lights can provide. Non-STVZO dynamo lights like the kLite models exist, but target other cycling niches.
