- Ok take 2! This is a speed video of my live showing how to do gradients and whether or not to outline your subjects. If you are feeling frustrated that your pyrography doesn't have the realism you want and you outline...this may be the reason. I show how you can use negative burning, gradients and pen control to get closer to your wood burning goals. Not all outlining in wood burning is bad, so we need to look at the differences.
I burned this on birch that I purchased from Michael's. It is in the model section not the wood section. I start with the colwood flat round shader and move onto the Walnut Hollow versatool for the rest of the video.

Pyrography: Wood Burning Outlines: Why you may not be achieving Realism (Voice Over)
Sorry about the last posting. The video didn't have an ending for some reason. 😬 I hope this speed version helps those who may not have time to sit & watch a live. Let me know if this has helped you. 😀
ola. seu trabalho é muito bom parabéns, gostaria de saber qual o nome dessa madeira de cor branca?
Tea strainer works great for getting rid of carbon without damaging your tips
I'm a newbie, and this, by far, has been the most helpful video ever. Thank you for your time and for showing how to take our creativity up a notch. Prayers for you and your loved ones ❤️
Hi yahannah and welcome. 😁 Thank you so much! I'm so glad this video was so helpful for you.
Fully enjoyed the full "live" video, but this presentation really fills in the finer details of your approach, giving such a clear insight to how you work and to achieve those results. Really great and happy you posted both! Cheers! :)
Thanks Mark! 😁 I'm glad this one feels more focused. I think I will definitely do these 2nd videos when I'm focus on a technique for the live. It's hard to burn, stay on camera and talk...lol 😉
Great explanation! Really helpful, especially talking about heat settings etc - thank you
Thank you Terri! 😁 I'm so glad it was helpful.
Wonderful video--so insightful and beautiful burning. I learned a lot and actually hadn't even considered burning without an outline!
Thanks so much Yuri!! 🤗 I hope you see your work really grow once you try no outlines.
Very very helpful ! Thank you ! ❤
Hi Melanie, you are so welcome! 😁
Valerie, This info was very helpful. I really liked the shadowing on the no outline leaf. It gave me ideas to try in my next project. 👍 God bless.
Thanks so much Collen, I'm glad I could help out. 😁
that was quite interesting , I myself have dabbled at it , you bring me a new insight
Thanks Carmine! 😁 You should do some more dabbling. 😉 I would love to see what you create.
I so want to try this excellent job Val
Robert Ortlepp Thanks Robert! 😁 You really should give a try. You either hate it or absolutely love doing it. 😃
This was so informative. Boy, i am sure enjoying burning but loving learning all the same :) With this video, i see what was frustrating me on a little thing i did today. . Anyway, off to more videos :)
Yay!! I'm glad this helped. 🎉 I know sometimes it hard to see what is off about what we are doing. I'm so happy this pointed you in the direction you needed. 🤗
13:56 I feel ya :) thanks for advices
@sobreaver thanks so much! 😁
So helpful - thank you!
Awesome thanks Chris! 🤗
great video... that looks like a fun technique!
Thanks Giao! 😁
Good Info! I do the same thing with drawing and my watercolors. I try not to see the lines look for the darks and highlights (it can be hard, B&W helps or sepia). if someone is frustrated, taking a drawing class would help a lot.
Hi Valerie, love all your videos and I am learning a ton. I am just getting started wood burning and had two questions. Are you still recommending the Optima 1 Dual burner as one of your top picks? I am looking to upgrade from my inexpensive starter set. Also, I am having trouble finding good quality gray graphite paper that is erasable like you show in your videos. I tried the local craft store graphite paper and it was very waxy and almost impossible to erase my lines. As always, thanks for your advice. Mark (using my wife's account)
Hi Mark & welcome! 😁 Yep, I absolutely still recommend the the Optima 1 single or dual. (www.carvertools.com) It is my #1 pick. 😃 As for the graphite paper, I use the walnut hollow graphite transfer paper: amzn.to/2KDgrPW
This is a link to the 6 pack of sheets. They are 12x24, so I cut them down to smaller pieces. They last a long while for me. I hope this helps! 😊
You have nice skill! I'm hooked!
Thanks D! I really appreciate it. 😁
Very clear video and it's a good option to make a second speed up video. I'm thinking of doing the oposite. lol. A less speed up video of the same work. Both the outline and dark pencil marks make the subject to look less real. Excelent aproach.
Thanks Richy! 😁 You should and see how it goes. 😉
Valarie, another great tip:-) thank you
Thanks Mahendra! 😁
Thank you for your video, I now have a better idea of approaching my work.
Awesome Howard! I'm so glad I could help out. 😁
Great thanks for help.
Happy to help Azerty. 😁
Loved this comparison. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much Kimberly!! 🤗
You’re welcome! I’ve only been burning for a few months. I learned specifically so I could do some signs for my DIY wedding and now I’m hooked. Do you have any videos specifically for finishing techniques? Such as using stains and sealants?
Hi Kimberly p, I dont have a specific video on sealant or stains. I use mini wax polycrylic to seal. I have all of the supplies I use here: kit.com/VCDrawingWithFire
great job
Thanks! 😁
Your videos got me to go buy a razortip ss-d10 and now I have a channel. Thank you for all your helpful tips!
I'm happy to help! 😁 By any chance have you already purchased the razortip? If not I highly recommend the optima 1.Congrats on your channel! 😃👍
Yes I did but I'll keep it in mind for a future purchase. Thanks again!!
No problem. 😁 You can use the optima pens on the razortip base if you are ever curious. 😉
I was actually lol Thank you!
I read minds lol 😆
Great tips
Thanks! 😁 I hope they helped.
Demonstration shows heat setting at 1 is this correct ? My burner hardly shows heat at 1 setting. Know it's not a race but .......
Hi Harold, yep if I showed/said 1 then that's what it is. 😃 How you hold the burner, how fast you move it, the type of tip, and what kind of wood all makes a difference. I know in this video I only used the spade shader and at a low setting the whole tip flat on the wood will hardly burn... I'm using mostly just the end of the tip to get a light burn. 😁
Ellerinize sağlık. Müthiş yetenek.👍
teşekkür ederim! sana da.
Very cool. I used to burn when i was younger and decided to pick it back up. I was an avid outliner. I see now that it's not necessary.
Thanks AG! 😁 How long have you burning now? Please feel free to post your work of in the Drawing With Fire Pyrography group on fb. I would love to see them. 😃
Not long, maybe 2 yrs...I will have to check out your group page.
What are you rubbing the wood with after you burn?
Hi Christine, it would be my vanish 4 in 1 eraser to remove any graphite. 😁 I have a my supplies list here: kit.com/VCDrawingWithFire
---you are amazingly brave...how do you hold on to the tree to keep from falling out and burn at the same time?---
Lol I'm guessing this was the wrong video. 🤣
What are you using to buff your work ?
Hi Harold, what do you mean by buffering? When I erase and knock the eraser crumbs off?
Nice work. You should imvest in a truart pen or some higher craftsmanship pen. All in all, still very nice. 👌
Thanks so much & welcome to my channel. 😁 If you are interested, I over 125 burning videos. This video is an intro video for those who have a craft style burner. I have been burning for 13 yrs with 12 of those using a wiretip burner. I have/had 7 wire tips with Optima being my very favorite and out performs the other brands including truart.
Hallo Valerie! Which wood do you use? Thank u
Hi Daniel! 😁 In this video I am using birch. Most of the time, I am using birch with a little basswood every now and again. 😉 edit: I'm using more & more basswood now.
@@DrawingWithFire Valerie, do you also have problems with coating? Because last time after i finished my pyrography art when I wanted to protect the wood with a coating, in some parts the coating erased some slight shadows! Did this ever happened to you, what do you use to protect pyrography and wood!
Hi@@denyosworld2620 no I don't have an issue with varnish. What happened with your light shading is that the wood darkened from the varnish. It darkened enough that it matched your lightest shading. All varnish darkens wood, some less than others. I use a UV spray first and then several coats of minwax polycrylic. To avoid the burning "going away" you have to burn it darker. I use denatured alcohol to check my burning. I also use it to clean off my burning after I have it blocked in... it removes light graphite. The denatured alcohol doesn't raise the grain and allows me to quickly see what my burning looks like when the wood darkens. This way I can adjust any of the tonal values. Here are the varnishes I use: UV spray - amzn.to/3nqlMPQ. Brush on varnish - amzn.to/3k2WIMB
Because the Minwax has gotten really expensive you can also use this Liquitex varnish - amzn.to/3z2DJpY. I use gloss finish for all of my piece, but you can pick the finish you like. I hope this helps. 😀
@@DrawingWithFire thank you so much Valerie! I try to burn it darker, but there are some light shading parts and when i used coat of miniwax polycrylic, those light parts were no longer visible. Next time i will first use a UV spray like you said and then later coat of miniwax polycrylic. I think that this is a good idea! Thank you, keep on good work! 😁
@@denyosworld2620 I'm so glad I can help. 😁
Grazie mille! 😁 Lo apprezzo molto. Spero che tu abbia una bellissima giornata.
