I got to study sound under the late Malcolm Chisolm in the early 80's. He was the master engineer at Chess. I was the only one in our class who was a blues enthusiast, so we had some great conversations. He had some great stories, especially Little Walter ones.

Love your playing and videos Kirk! You've hit on something I've never thought of, but so relevant: playing without the string bends and vibrato. I love and listen to a fair amount of OLD recordings, and I pick stuff up from them - but I am so in the habit of using bends and vibrato that it works its way into my music. You've demonstrated a much more authentic way for us to play the blues, at least some of the time.
    Thanks Kirk.

Thanks, Kirk. Stay enthusiastic. I try to pick up tips from players from the 20s through the 60s too. You can’t mimic them all the time, but it sure gives you fresh angles (to me) to work with for solos and rhythm work. I’m a big fan of Lonnie Johnson, T-Bone Walker and B. B. King. I look forward to hearing and seeing your next post.

Really enjoying the vids! Discovered you back in your T-Bird days, along with Nick Curran. You two had a great dynamic that was refreshing to hear, rather than trying to copy the great Jimmie Vaughan. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind talking about that dynamic and the trading off of guitar duties you two had back then, and maybe any thoughts or insight you might remember about Nick? He became one of my favorites, his records mean a lot to me and I’ve always been fascinated with how you and Nick played off of each other. That period of the T-Birds and the Painted On record is so underrated! Thanks again, and I really appreciate your playing!
