I Bought a BNSF HO Scale Intermodal Freight Train

  • Ever since getting my first Intermodal train car in 2018 I've been on the lookout to pick up some extras but unfortunately they tend to be quite pricy however recently I found some on eBay at fairly decent prices and decided to buy them.
    I ended up getting seven new cars featuring three Walther's BNSF well cars as well as four off-brand ones. The BNSF ones were particularly fitting since I was a huge fan of Microsoft train simulator back in the day and always wanted to get an ho scale one just like in the game.
    Despite needing some more work I'm overall very pleased with these new pieces of rolling stock.

    Very cool Harrison, Walthers is virtually the king of intermodal equipment in HO scale, got several articulated 5 unit (dubbed 5 packers on BNSF) and several stand alone cars as well as 89 foot TOFC cars and they are great! Those small pieces go on the car sides and help prevent the bottom container from shifting side to side and provide a nice snug fit for them. If you look along the tops of the sides of the car, there should be holes drilled for them to be mounted.

    Your TTX set is one car, it's supposed to be drawbar connected between the middle wells. It's probably marked A-B-C-D and should be arranged A-D-C-B.
    What I usually do on those is use some horn hooks with the bottom clipped off instead of drawbars, so they're easy to handle rather than have to pick up one long four piece car.
    I wouldn't be surprised if the BNSF set is one car also.
    It's not a big deal, you can run them how you like, only up close is it noticeable. The train looks good on the layout.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Год назад +5

      Thanks for explaining this. Unfortunately as seen in the video one of the draw bars was busted and I figured why not just replace them all at the same time and not have issues in the future with coupling.

    • @CR7659
      @CR7659 Год назад +1

      4-unit Drawbarred-connected wellcars are have A-D-C-B.

  • @williamsquires3070
    @williamsquires3070 Год назад +9

    They’re not missing the couplers; note the drawbar on the 1st unit you unwrapped (from the 2nd box) - hook that to one of the units without a coupler, then put the draft gear box cover back on. These well cars are usually a 3- or 5-car set. The two cars with couplers are the A and B units, then the remaining ones are C, D, and E (or just C, if a 3-car set). The end unit with the brake wheel (or ratchet handle) is the B-end car, while the other one is the A-end car. There should be another drawbar in there, somewhere. Usually, the prototypes have a shared bogie (truck), but it looks like yours are a model of a set with permanent drawbars.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Год назад +1

      One of the cross bars was broken and I figured I may as well upgrade them at the same time.

    • @mercuryoak2
      @mercuryoak2 Год назад +1

      I noticed that too but if he was to remove two of the cars that were connected together with that drawbar he would end up risking breaking it. I think that approach he did with making all the cars have couplers was a good approach to avoid having it's get broken since it is plastic

  • @NotDaender
    @NotDaender Год назад +1

    I love that Walthers made theirs out of durable and heavy metal instead of the light and fragile plastic that Athrearn uses. Athearn intermodal cars like to shear-off the cross bracing on the bottom of the cars, leading to containers dropping out...and a huge resulting fender-bender.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Год назад

      I have a feeling the Walthers ones will last quite a long time.

I just retired and bought my first HO set back in February, I picked a Marklin digital set because it has train sounds along with the German styled trains, I also have a couple of O scale layouts in my basement. The reason for the HO layout because I did not have much room , its a 7 foot by 4 foot layout, it is different from my O scale trains which also have the sound effects but its a lot of fun.

    As someone who recently worked near the waterfront in Richmond Beach WA, BNSF intermodal trains are quite frequent passing by, alongside Procar tank trains and coal trains. Inspired me to get back into modern railroading and have also been stocking up on well cars to run on a layout. You should definitely weather the cars, it's much rarer to see a clean car than it is to see one weathered or caked in graffiti or both! I know there are quite a few manufacturers of HO scale graffiti decals, Fusion Scale Graphics and Microscale make some nice looking ones, and can be used for the side of buildings or other rolling stock that tend to get tagged~. Would definitely recommend to get some Micro Sol to soften the decals around all the details of the well cars.
    Maybe even get a weathering powder and use a fluffy brush to streak vertically and spray some rattle can clearcoat to seal it all, sould be a quick and easy effect to pull off and look decent. Excited to see what comes of it all!

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Год назад +1

    quite impressive to see something like that new on the layout. I noticed one of the comments or said that they thought the wheel flanges screeching as you are going around the curve. To me it sounds like the wheel flanges were rubbing against the frame of the intermodal cars maybe needs broader curves? What I thought was really realistic is when you see the cars rocking back and forth the way that the track work is it's actually quite neat to see looks authentic. I noticed you took off the drawbar off one of them and then there was one that was broken in half. I could see the drawbars being a hassle because if you wanted to remove them from the layout you'd have to unscrew the drawbar or risk breaking it trying to move so I like your approach to just put kadees or equivalent on the cars. Very good.

    Nice sets! I liked the way you made the coupler pocket covers. That was sneaky. And they look great running on the layout! ANother good loco to hauls those with would be a UP EMD SD70ACe - I see those quite a bit here in So Cal pulling intermodal trains through Burbank.

    Oh man that is so cool right there! That’s awesome that you got these intermodal cars aka well cars with the containers that go with it too the bnsf ge dash 9 right there does indeed go with this consist here though and I remember playing alittle bit of train similator growing up here maybe I. 1st grade when it came out. Thanks for sharing man! I was thinking getting one of these someday for my ho scale collection but idk about the radius of my track here

    • @SMTMainline

      They might struggle on 18R, my track is 22 and they were already making some strange noises.

      @@SMTMainline yea it could idk I know my walthers grand trunk autorack here does kinda struggle on my radius curves here but not my bachmann Santa Fe one which it rolls pretty well on my curves I think they’re 18 radius curves which I have on my ho scale layout but idk I’ll have to check on it later.

      @@SMTMainline good day I was listening to one of your live streams from 3 year ago and you spoke about fireworks in a trash can.wow that brought back some memories I used to get air bags out of junk cars and hook long wire to them place them in a metal trash can and detonate them with a 12v battery and they would come out of that trash can and go up 40 sometimes 50 ft. Good times. If you try it make sure your about 40 ft away and have a 100 ft of wire
