Want to add more power to your punches and kicks? Remember this-- it ain't how much you got, it’s how much you can use!
To be at full power, you have to put 100% of YOU into every technique. But you're probably not doing that! Worse, there are probably parts of your body that are making you weaker! Let's fix that...
Throw a punch. Now pick a body part, like your back foot, and ask it, "How are you helping me?" There are only three possible answers…
Either your foot is helping you, it’s doing nothing, or it’s hurting you.
If it’s helping, see if it can help more. If it’s doing nothing, see if it can start helping. And if it’s hurting you, fix it.
Repeat this process with EVERY PART OF YOUR BODY. Feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, neck, face... everything!
Your goal is to figure out how each part of your body can help make your punching and kicking stronger.
When you find that sweet spot where your whole body is helping, and nothing is holding you back, then you’ll be at full power.

This was a good video. I've been critical in the past, so let me point out some positives as I see them.
    1. You aren't trying to be billy badass. No scowls, skull tattoos or trophies in the back.
    2. No boasting of lineage from super great grand master so and so that no one cares about. Not even much mention of style.
    3. No patches, affiliations or systems.
You've managed to skip over a lot of pitfalls that many martial artists fall into when they venture into business. You should make a video for professionals. You could call it, how to be a normal guy that people can relate to that trains hard and lives happy.

Steve! You just made my day. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. Martial arts is bigger than any style or lineage. Or my ego! I just want to share what has helped me to become a better me. Thank you for the comment, sir!

Hey sensei, here is a bit of a lame science: Kinetic energy = 1/2mv2, where m is the mass of the fist and v2 is the speed. In boxing the punch is delivered by having 3 ways to accelerate the fist.
    1. propel forward
    2. rotate hips
    3. deliver the punch
Thus the higher the speed, the snappier the punch the more force it will have. Notice that 1 will also increase the mass the fist since you propel you whole body forward. So to increase the power of the punch, work on your speed and follow thru.
The punches with higher power are the one delivered on the inside in close fight..fast acceleration in a short distance. Thats why jab sucks and uppercut rules.
Note: increased power means that for every hit you deliver expect the opponent tissue to hit back (transfer power back at you) which may damage your hand..to prevent this you can:
    1. use bare knuckle to hit the heavy bag till bones become tough (carries risk of arthritis at old age) or do push ups on fists.
    2. dont use fist at all...slap the opponent with open hand the benefit is that it hurts, but it will not damage him or you.
The only exercise to increase your speed is jumping push ups. hope it helps.

Hi, just got a kettlebell, it seems useful. I'm practicing the Turkish get-up. It can be tough on the shoulder but I guess it strengthens them. What you said about "stuff that's holding you back" is true in kettlebell stuff as well, when doing that you notice the 'weak spots' and try to improve them to get proper form.

Great advice , I would add " emotional content " ( the old Bruce Lee quote , still valid ) ; another way of putting your heart into it . Some punch & kick with anger , authority or for me , joy of life - getting a rush from the movement . This really helped me develop speed & power beyond what I thought I was capable . ( A big thank you to my late Sensei , John Balee . )

This is where a master instructor or coach can help most. To show how it’s done. The problem with what you describe is overthinking things. I’ve seen more students mess up by overintellectualizing technique , when really they should be drilling it. Not mindlessly, but not over analyzing either. The details tend to take care of themselves over time and practice. Organically , so to speak. For the intermediate and advanced students, the coach should firstly make sure the technique is being executed safely and then make minor tweaks over time. Remember too, that most students really couldn’t understand what each individual body part should do in techniques. The stuff you are talking about is best reserved for people who are advanced enough, like yourself, to self teach. The ultimate success a teacher can impart to his student.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  5 лет назад +1

It’s a cycle, right? You get information from a coach and then yourself… then your coach… then yourself. It’s important that students eventually take responsibility for their own progress. Thank you for the thoughtful comment!

I feel fortunate that I was not there to witness it, but during one of the FAST Defense sessions, there was a guy that hit harder than his own arm could handle and he suffered a compound fracture (meaning the bone pierced his skin and was visible) inn his ulna. He certainly putt 100% of himself into that palm strike. And that's not all, as FAST Defense is about functioning while in a state of adrenal stress. He had so much adrenaline that even after this happened, he continued striking with the same arm as he could not feel it. I only saw the guy after the fact, as he had a cast with an iron bar protruding from it, presumably to help the bone realign itself.

Ha! Run for sure... that's good advice for any fight! There's always a chance of getting shot, stabbed, or crippled.
For me, every technique should work against someone bigger. And oddly, almost every martial art says that it was created for the smaller, weaker person. But then combat sports come along and distort everyone's thinking!
Anyway, great topic idea. I've actually been outlining a whole course about it. Thanks for encouraging me to finish it up!

Power of a striking technique depends on four things, the level of perfection of the technique, the speed in which you perform the technique, the dynamic tension through out the muscles of your body right before impact aka muscles that cause the movement and finally how heavy your whole bodyweight is. Focus on increasing the amount of these factors in a successive order and your power will increase.

The Key to Power is awareness! No doubt Sir. Very good concept. I guess any Artist of any dicipline will agree. What does Ando think about the Concept of Chi Power. Or is this Question a little too intimate? So now I shortend my questions down. I asked already the other Masters. Yoda and Songuko. No answer yet. No, I am bloody serious about the question.

I'm obsessed with mixed martial arts and all these amazing techniques. I'm currently 7-0 in boxing, but I really want to transition to judo, karate, etc. really I just want to be able to reach my maximum potential in having control over my body and mind. I don't plan on using every thing I learn to go out and fight people though, rather I want to feel light on my feet while having so much power. This is obviously asking a lot to be recommended and explained, so could you just suggest a few videos for me to watch to start out as a rookie? Thankyou love your videos

Congrats on your record and your continuing efforts to improve, Joseph! There's so much info out there nowadays that it's pretty much impossible to say what will be interesting to you. I watch everything. Gracie Breakdowns, John Hackleman, Mark Hatmaker, Erik Paulson, Faras Zahabi... the list is endless. I recommend finding one or two good ideas and then turning off your device to train them before you get distracted. Go deep, not wide. The internet is a blessing and a curse! Go get 'em!

first: how to improve and make my fingers so strong? because i plan to do push up with 2 or 1 finger like Bruce Lee did
second: how can i make my fists so fast? is there a good and simple exercises ?
thank you sensei, sorry for bothering you but i hope you understand my questions and what i mean.

      @AndoMierzwa  8 лет назад

Hi Ibrahim! I don't do 1 finger push-ups, so I can't help you with that. I would guess you should start with 5 fingers.. then 4... then 3... then 2... then 1. Take your time.
As for increasing your hand speed, I think Bruce Lee said that the secret to kicking faster is to kick faster! The answer is always practice. There are no shortcuts. Although relaxing helps. If I think of something else, I'll be back! OSU!
