I bought the NB Propel v4 after this video, and was pleasantly surprised by the ride and response of the shoes. Thanks Seth James DeMoor for a great and informative review - keep up the good work
After breaking my foot in my November, my goal was to set a PR in the half marathon with limited mileage and more cross training. It worked! I shaved just two minutes off but a PR nonetheless.
I received my new Balance fuelcell propel v4 on Monday at an unbeatable price of 70 euros. Like you said "What´s the Risk" this shoe is fantastic. It's a great feeling to run with the shoe. I ran at a slow pace and interval and marathon pace. The shoe can handle all paces. Wow!!! WHAT´S THE RISK!!!!! LOL. I'll order another pair in case the other pair breaks. This is my first pair of new Balance with fuelcell and I already love it. Thank you for reviewing this pair of shoes.
Im a physics teacher you can use a eureka can to measure volume. Basically fill a bucket with a spout until it is just overflowing then put your foot in and collect the water that spills out and measure it (1ml=1cm3). The volume of the water is equal to the volume of the foot.
QD : I ran for the first time after 6 months off and knee arthroscopic surgery. No pain the next day was important and now I’m typing this the day after with no pain (besides the incision area ((1/10))
We have a running shoe store here in Pa called Fleet feet. They have you stand on a platform and it takes a 3D image of your foot and it shows everything from shoe size to width to girth at the heal, ankle, you name it. Pretty cool. Even shows arch type and compares your results to other peoples results and tells you how average or not average you are. They use this to determine type of shoe for you. It still comes down to what ultimately works for you and I always take a run in them outside before purchasing.
I love the Propel series. I've had Propel v2's that are still my favorite pair I've ever owned. I did over 1000k with them before I replaced them with the v3's and love them as well. I'm coming up on 500k with them now and I think they have about 100-200k left in them. Then I'll defintely switch to v4's. I use them mainly for speed work and interval trainings on the road.
For me Propel v4 are surprisingly hard when landing on midfoot/toes. When walking they seem to be nice and comfortable. But when running I immediately feel it in my bones (shins). I don't have those issues with rebel v3 or rebel v2.
Ordered mine today. It only took me a day to conwider this purchase. Why? Tpu plate is worth much a few bucks more. You brought value & this, it seems should be good for me. Especially since last two times i have run a race with new balnce shoes, i have PR'd
Always love watching your ever enthusiastic reviews, an obvious love of running. I found the 1080 v 10 11 and 12 to soft for distance but ok for an hour or so at a time , and this way clocked up 650 miles on both pairs of v11's . Got my propel v4 on the way , so looking forward to seeing how they go . Run run run 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Love the Propel and Prism series. They're super comfy daily trainers! I like them for the bop-along miles; I don't prefer it for the long run, as I seem to sink into the Fuelcell foam and end up trying to fight my way out of the shoe at each step
Archemedis principal… volume = water displacement. So you can measure the volume on your own! Just place your feet in a buchet full of water. The volume of water that leaves the bucket equals to the volume of your feet! 😅
I just bought the shoe too and at first I found the midsole just a tick firmer than I expected... I also have the FuelCell SC Trainer and I expected the Propel to be something like it, but it is not quite as soft and bouncy as the SC trainer, which I absolutely love!! After running in the Propel V4 though I actually liked the ride A LOT too! It felt soft enough, fast, responsive and conformable - my feet didn't get tired at all! In my size US9 the shoe weighs 278g, 9g less than my SC trainer - for me light enough! I will keep the propel V4, which I bought for only 65 €, and will rotate them with the SC Trainer as my daily running shoes... NB is killing it!! Thx for the video👌👍
@@Reggy9 yeah, I guess you are right, I still expected it to be closer tbh... I thought it had the same Fuelcell foam, but it seems to be a hard one in the direct comparison... In the end both shoes feel completely different imo
QOD: I’ve been wanting to get back on the strength training train and I did so yesterday. Always makes my runs feel that much better when I’m consistent with my strength training 👍🏻
I’ve been running in the propel v4’s for a while now, got about 32km on them now. Totally love it, very versatile shoe that feels good across for almost any pace. If the weight was down a bit, would pretty much be the perfect budget do-it-all shoe QD: I have a goal of getting back strong legs since getting a nasty knee injury on the left. Been about six months since and I am able to run pretty comfortably now. Still a lot of work to do but I can tell it’s getting better slowly. Over the weekend, I was able to do a ~5km, then some short fast runs the next day without any problems with my knee.
Love this shoe. Weight doesn't bother me because I'm a new and slow runner and my only other shoe in my rotation is Nimbus 25 which is heavier and less stable
Gonna wait for these to go on sale near Christmas time, will pick them up for $40, then will just use it for one entire training block. Whether or not the shoes are for me, you can't really complain about that price
Hockey skates actually are sized due to foot volume. Bauer has 3d scanners at major hockey stores that measure multiple dimensions of your feet Volume is probably lless important with flexible running shoe uppers vs rigid skates, but might be something we see in the future.
I have the Propel V1 and found it much too soft and mushy even for easy runs so I made it my everyday casual shoe. It is showing its age so this might be a good replacement, especially with the TPU plate. Hard to beat the comfort of my old Mach 4's though, which are my everyday indoor shoes!
As far as measuring volume, bucket of water, filled to the rim. Whatever gets displaced is the volume of your foot. Or measure the volume of yhe water left. Difference between full bucket and what is left is the volume of your foot. Easypeesy
Weight doesn't matter for a training shoe, so long as it's still enjoyable to run in. Training is about the effort you put in, not the speed you're going at. Grip matters a lot though. The outsole looks really slick for a daily shoe. Proper training shoes should have tread like the Pegasus or most of Puma's shoes.
Great video! Are those New balance trainers fit to size? Am a Uk size 10 My Asics Novablast are fit to my size or do l need to go half size bigger? Am ready to pull the trigger to buy soon thanks
Thank you for all of your great reviews. This was a shoe I was considering for tempo work, but I’m concerned about the weight because I’m coming from the Beacon V3. I use my 1080s for slow longer runs. -What would you recommend to replace my Beacon V3s?
Always been a big NB fan. But after my rebels tore on the medial side forfoot. In fact, three pairs tore in the same spot. I lost confidence in the brand . My daughter, who only weighs 100 lbs also had her rebels tear. Hope they fixed that problem. Time will tell.
Seth your hat was blank? Didn't have the 'D' on it. :) Love the 'D' hats. Ready to order one. Also at end of your vlog one time just say Sub-wha-Leo! (seek beauty, work hard, Love each other!)
Hey Seth, could you recommend a maximalist running shoe for kids? Playing in them would be a nice to have but my kid is ever so close to being tall enough for a roller coaster

Would you still suggest this shoe?

I got my last "20" miler of this training block done - actually did 23 - before a VERY busy weekend with my kids 👍🏻🙌🏻

Hey, I had knee pain for 2 years and couldn’t run, I found the kneesovertoesguy and fixed my knees. You should look him up on RUclips👍🏾
Did it help? How long did it take to recover!
I had acl surgery and went through many shoes and found that a low drop, low stack, firm neutral running shoes work best
Just got this shoe for 86 pounds in the UK amazing value. I went half a size up and the fit is perfect.

Seth, the volumental scanner shows the volume of the instep and the ball of the foot. Shop at your local fleet feet!

I think it’s because of the TPU plate. TPU is not a snappy/responsive material and probably makes you feel like the shoe is firmer than it really is
You cannot expect it to even be close to the SC Trainer. I mean, look at the price difference. There is a reason for it!
@@Reggy9 yeah, I guess you are right, I still expected it to be closer tbh... I thought it had the same Fuelcell foam, but it seems to be a hard one in the direct comparison... In the end both shoes feel completely different imo

I set out to get in an 8 mile taper long run this weekend and went 9 with two of the miles at tempo.

fixed the washing machine!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
For volume you can just step in water. But that doesn't give you the distribution. A camera and software would do that.
In the specialised hockey stores in Canada some have scanning pad you put your feets on and they scan them for volume
QD: Must be a new PR of 17:31 over the 5km, on my way to sub 17!
$65 at AAFES now, all sizes but only one color. They've been that price for a couple of weeks now.

I've just bought the permafrost version to get me through UK winter, I'm hoping they're something close to a Endorphin Speed ride.
QD: Set a new PR for 10k of 42:20.
I've never even heard of the Propel model.
Today I look at them at the store, but... don't know how much the two parts of the mid sole are going to last together...

Can be used for half marathon?
How does it compare to the Speed 3? That’s a fair comparison, minus the price.
Just ordered a propel v4 for around $95 here in Poland 🥳🇵🇱 Curious how they will perform 🤫
How is it compared to the On Monster ?
I had to buy two pair.
263g for that is pretty okay imo. Not really a drawback unless it is around 300g.
To measure the volume of your foot : water displacement would probably be the easiest method!
Great video!
