Great to see a Porsche on the channel. My 992 has a glove box like normal cars, but also the engine temp also sits around 190-212 or so depending what you are doing. That’s a Porsche engine, but still…. Also, the fans always run after your shut the engine off to push all the the heat out. So there could be a timer there
Yep. Look for a DC 12v PLC Relay Multifunction Timer Module. They cost about $5-8. You can feed it with power from the battery and it can use the keyswitch as a trigger; when keyswitch OFF, run for x seconds after.
I for one would love longer content, that much is true. it's amazing how you figured out a cooling problem on the Porsche in a matter of hours is remarkable. Totally glued to this channel. LSC all the way. The DeLorean project was super cool by the way.
Awesome video!! Thanks for showing the whole process. So few people really appreciate the value of a good mechanic that can troubleshoot. Mind blowing that no other shop could sort this out. Such an amazing dopamine hit when we solve stuff like this.
Make sure you have the proper oil pan at high speeds if your using the stock oil pan it will starve for oil and lock up the motor . The oil pan needs a baffle in it to keep the oil from splashing backwards creating oil starvation. Love the content keep up the great work .
Nice!! Reminds me of a sweet deal I got on decent condition 1996 MB SL320 for ~$3k. They couldn’t figure out how to fix the fans so they gave up. I took a look at the relays and they had a BMW relay plugged in for the fans 🙃 The pins lined up, but the power pin was in a totally different spot on the BMW relay compared to the factory Mercedes one. $20 for a new factory relay and everything was working like normal. This was about 8 months ago. I’ve been daily driving my SL320 since then and it’s running flawlessly.
As a previous 996 owner, this is my new favorite build of yours. The manual does go under the steering wheel, and the ignition on the left side is for "Le Mans" type starts! Looking forward to everything with this one.
Alex, u did it again, man! U r a freaking KNOWLEDGE GOD! Unbelievable....wait...of course it's believable! It's Alex! What the heck am i talking about! Keep up the awesome work Alex! 😎👍
You're the man Alex! I would think even average mechanics would understand how cars work but that's not reality. Here's to actual mechanics that know cars and aren't just part swappers!
The fact that more than one “professional” mechanic couldn’t diagnose this is truly incredible. Great job fixing it and looking forward to more videos with the LSC 996!
Nobody wants to work on hacked together junk like this. They likely barely tried at all, billed him for some money and shoved it outside. This car is a hacked together ruined pos now and barely worth scrap. It is also likely dangerous to drive as the Porshe designed weight balance and handling are all completely screwed now so who knows what bad tendencies this pos has on the road, let alone during any aggressive driving.
@@riverpirate1022 Then decline the work. When a mechanic accepts a job and bills for time, they’re obligated to give it best effort. The fact that they couldn’t figure out a cooling fan that wasn’t spinning is exactly why I put “professional” in quotes. The LS is likely lighter than the original power plant, which would improve the weight balance of the car. Using your logic, no one should ever modify a car in any way.
@@riverpirate1022 You sure are funny! Do you really think that a junk porsche engine is better than a Chevy? That V8 makes more power, is FAR, FAR, more reliable, is lighter, easier to service, and costs considerably less than the porsche garbage. Also, I intentionally did not capitalize porsche because I don't think the brand deserves it, due the the POS's that they've always been.
@@davidstjames_Really odd take, while LS are fantastic motors and make great swaps for an expensive flat-six… Porsches statistically are reliable, quality vehicles.
In 82 I bought a Oldsmobile 455 from a junkyard for $350 because the transmission wouldn’t shift, even a shop told the owner it needed a new transmission. Within 10 minutes I fixed it. The linkage was bent. One of the best cars I ever owned.
If you haven't already thought of it, put the fans on an old school turbo timer. That way you can get a few extra minutes of cooling after shutdown without killing the battery.
I estimated you paid $25,000 and was very close to actual price you paid. That is one intriguing ride. The Porsche is very light and will literally fly with the LS. The color is really nice and the wheels are superb. Great deal on an amazing car. Can’t wait until you fully work you magic and tune that engine.
Literally? I mean, making a car literally fly actually isn't as hard as you might think. Just fuck up the aero to generate lift (bias lift to be greater in the front), go over 100mph, you'd be surprised.
I guessed $12k. I think that's all a wholesaler would offer. I haven't finished watching the video yet, so maybe this car is better than I think, but at first glance is looks like a pail.
I’m sure you cut much of your video but I love how calm you are finding problems and fixing stuff. You definitely do your research. Enjoying how you stay so calm I always freak out when things go wrong.
Brilliant work! Your ability to share the diagnosis and repair in a fun and relatable manner is just fantastic. My favorite car of all time was my old air-cooled 911S. I wish I had it back or enough cash to get the new 911 S/T.
whoever tunes that for you can make that factory ecu output Efans if you wanna clean up and simplify fan operation specially with AC if you add that in
Do you mean through the LS computer or Porsche? I think I can get the Porsche one to take over can control as is. Supposedly there's another temp sensor that controls the fans.
For sure, I appreciate that. I'll try the Porsche computer first since it's still there and should be able to control the fans as is. If that doesn't work I'll try the LS ECU. I'm going to revisit that when I start the AC installation.
Put in a fan relay to protect the thermostatic switch from the fan load and allow it to be controlled safely from the ignition switch. Remove the worthless pusher fans as they are actually blocking ram air. Without interfering with the radiator area (new space) install the engine oil cooler but install a thermostatically controlled bypass to avoid overcooling the oil. Those pusher fans were probably puller type and wired backwards so the blades were “stalled” but you may be able to use one fan for the oil cooler. Get a rear sump(rear of car) oil pan asap or face oil starvation (probably too late).
The fans running when the engine off is a good thing because it will bring down the temp instead of rising. The fans will shut off at a safe temp. Some of the older Hondas worked that way.
Superb video! You were able to solve the overheating issue when other shops the previous owner went to couldn't! Always a thrill to see what upgrades or fixes you would do next 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That looks like it's going to be a fun car! Glad it wasn't a major cooling issue. I'm currently working on rebuilding my 98 Trans Am. I bought it 2 months after i graduated high school in 2002. I had a rocker arm bearing give out and send needles through the engine. She's going back together stronger though. Moral of the story... do your trunion upgrades!
If I got another LS car (I've had 3) I would get a roller body and then do a 5.3L with an upgraded top end refresh designed for boost and then get a pair of used turbos to rebuild. And I always say to use link bar lifters in an LS
Love love love this channel, started out with Freddy and his Mercedes you know( wrench everyday) so I bought a cl500 and I do all the work myself five years now, but Alex you the man great videos all the time never miss any of them keep up the great work. Loved the cl600 to.
I guess i dk the worth of cars these days because if someone said 10-15k i would of pulled the $from the bank asap thinkn im getting 50k off the top😂 butt again i dk shitts bout there worth
911’s don’t have power steering, those mega-wide tires are why it’s so heavy steering. That was a sweet 911 when new, it has the tech-lighting package and these cars have aged well.
Awesome show.. Awesome car.. That's a keeper Alex.. This is gonna be fun watching you perfect the match of engineering systems.. LS is an engine ahead of it's time and that body. Well, Porsche speaks for it's self.. Fun show, Thanks.. Shared it..
Great buy! Awesome troubleshooting and repair of those factory fans dude! I think you are really going to love being a Porshe guy. I suspect that car is going to fly and hug the corners like it's on rails. Have fun with it.
I was totally pulled in by the RUclips algorithm and watched a couple videos very cool content!! Subscribed!! The outtakes at the end are making me laugh because you’re so polished in the video
Good score Alex, a Porsche with a good old home grown powerplant is a good vehicle. It just shows your experience in diagnosis to fix those fans so simply. Great viewing 👍.
Porsche LSC is already off to a good start, i think you are right the pusher fans are obstructing the cooling capabilities of the radiators. I think a supercharger might be in order to go with the spicy cam...
What a great video....ive been a fan since your own small garage days and the quality of your videos have improved sooo much...just better camera work and more information.....awesome work man 🎉
My son and I are working on restoring a 92 Maxima and head gaskets on a 2002 F150. Great and fun channel you have going. Ny wife loved how giddy you were about the DeLorean.
All the ways and techniques you show us are great. I have added some of that knowledge to my arsenal of vehicle repair. Also, since you asked. I'm currently working on a 2007 Magnum SRT8. I'm looking into the best bang for my buck on exhaust.
Find some SS longtube headers. If you don't live somewhere that does smog testing then get catless mids and xpipe. If you have smog testing get high flow cats and xpipe. Then go on summit racing or jegs and get 2 bullet style mufflers or resonators of your choice. Install the longtubes, mids, and xpipe yourself. Take the resonators or mufflers to your local family owned exhaust shop and have them finish installing them along with the rest of the tubing. Usually it's about $200 for the shop to install the mufflers and make the rest of the custom tubing. If you are going to make over 500hp go with a 3 inch exhaust. If you won't go over 500hp go with a 2.5 inch exhaust
Very cool Alex.... I think you got a good deal on this one. Someone else had one that kept having oiling issues that killed the LS. It was used on a track and cornering G's caused oil starvation. I really enjoyed this first episode.
I’ve got a 996c4. The fans for the front rads are 2 speed and both come on together and ramp up together. Porche turbo has an extra rad and fan in the middle at the front as well.
I am working on my 76' corvette , tuning the quadra jet and messing with muffler/exhaust options. Great video, LSC is my favorite automotive channel now. Videos and content steadily improving and surpassing Hoovie, Vicegrip and others. Nice work on camera and under the hood.!
My ONLY gripe is the flesh colored paint job, but a totally awesome machine in every way. Once you get everything sorted (hopefully for as cheap as possible) you should look into a color change.
@@emprisedll5472 I think I could live with the inside color if the outside was a dark blue or like a "brandy wine" red with a lite flake to make it sparkle or a black or other dark and "rich" color because then the tan interior would work with those colors nicely.
The story goes that the key is on the left because when performing a la man’s start you can jump in turn the car on with the left hand and engage the 1st gear with the right hand.
Why not just engage to 1st gear when the car is off then turn the key on (with clutch fully depress) once its on, release the clutch then throttle? My 97 lancer can do this, you can sometimes even forgot that its on 1st gear while turning on (I usually engage either 1st or reverse when parking on slope roads) it just stalls as the hand break is engaged.
Awesome video. I like your assumption about what the previous technicians thought - or did - to deal with the overheating problem. Wiring it for low speed what knuckleheads. Probably gearheads and no idea about wiring. Great car for a great deal - you need to install the AC (if there's room!).
Alex, you’re still not using those connectors right. The soldier needs to be basically shiny, meaning it’s melted ALL the way. You’re barely letting it get pliable and you’re removing the heat. It’s a weak connection and will erode much sooner than it should. It’s a good connection once the soldier starts to seep into the wires. By the way, you’re building my literal dream car. A Porsche 6 sp wide body with an LS motor in it. 😳 So, I’ll be following along for sure. Awesome, unique car. I had cool cars in the military, but some things happened and I ended up not having such cool cars, and now my health has me lookin’ at the short end of life, so if I can’t build/buy my dream car, I can at least watch you build it. 😊
I would definitely delete the pusher fans and then test to see whether the OEM fans alone are sufficient. I may have missed some of the details on the aftermarket fan wiring, but I'd also consider trying to bring the OEM two stage fan system back to stock and deleting/not using the aftermarket temp sensor, if that's possible.
Great troubleshooting, Alex! If I were the former owner, I'd be miffed at the shops that could not diagnose, much less fix the problem. The shops then got the former owner to add parts that were completely useless. So let's compare. Previous shops: 1) Utter fail at diagnosing the problem followed by 2) weak parts cannon. Alex: 1) proper diagnosis followed by 2) removing unnecessary parts, leading to 3) a no-parts added solution.
Alex that is a sick car. The body stance and the wheels have me sold. I love deep dish wheels absolutely my favorite look on vehicles that can get away with it and this one can
Awesome Job Alex - really neat to see that you are a true Norhtern Boy! Who else films in his shop in a Tee Shirt while he can still see his breath. Lovin' ya from the True North! (Canada)
You asked so I will say. I often watch people like you who work on cars the proper way. I have never really put a car on 4 jack stands and completed any really in depth work on a car. I recently bought a 3rd car that was cheap and had some minor issues with the intent of having something to work on and learn without fear. I recently replaced the clutch by myself on the floor and added some other parts to have more fun at the track. People like you infected me with a bug to wrench on cars. Thanks for filming with such depth and showing how to properly approach the trouble shooting process.
Working on a 2013 ford focus. Had a weird engine fault and transmission failure codes. Tracked it down to a wiring issues somewhere. Ripped out the aftermarket car starter that was half assed tossed togather in there. Codes went away and doesnt seem to be a issue. Drives and shifts good. Couple more items to fix before I clean it up for sale
Alex. I would go for remote control exhaust flap, a better wheels and tires like some BBM or similar. The rear trunk seems missing a exhaust fan from the hoid, may it helps to keep cool better once you install the Air Condition. Keep it up. Excited to see the next videos about the work on Porsche LS-C
That's awesome you got the fans figured out so quickly! Can I recommend when you wire them to the ignition, you do so through a timed delay off relay? It's not out of the ordinary for the fans to run a little while after the ignition is off, if it needs it.
I'm somewhere between novice and dumb luck DIY'er, with my main flaw being diagnostic abilities. Love watching you go audible on diagnosis in sort of pachinko ball (process of elimination) fashion. Lets us half wits stay right there with you as you solve your situations. Very enjoyable, and (fingers crossed) maybe some things to be learned along the way. Great videos.

Great to see a Porsche on the channel. My 992 has a glove box like normal cars, but also the engine temp also sits around 190-212 or so depending what you are doing. That’s a Porsche engine, but still…. Also, the fans always run after your shut the engine off to push all the the heat out. So there could be a timer there
I'd certainly suggest adding in a timer if you can't find the factory one.
The late 90’s 996 and 986 did not have a glovebox
My buddy has a 996 making 700 horse !
Yep. Look for a DC 12v PLC Relay Multifunction Timer Module. They cost about $5-8. You can feed it with power from the battery and it can use the keyswitch as a trigger; when keyswitch OFF, run for x seconds after.
Hey Zollotech, any news on 17.2rc
I for one would love longer content, that much is true. it's amazing how you figured out a cooling problem on the Porsche in a matter of hours is remarkable. Totally glued to this channel. LSC all the way. The DeLorean project was super cool by the way.
Awesome video!! Thanks for showing the whole process. So few people really appreciate the value of a good mechanic that can troubleshoot. Mind blowing that no other shop could sort this out. Such an amazing dopamine hit when we solve stuff like this.
Alex, you did a master lesson about how to diagnose and fix the overheating issue on a car.
I love the diagnosis process. As a shop owner I enjoy watching videos on electronics and how to figure things out! Great video
Make sure you have the proper oil pan at high speeds if your using the stock oil pan it will starve for oil and lock up the motor . The oil pan needs a baffle in it to keep the oil from splashing backwards creating oil starvation.
Love the content keep up the great work .
I think Hoovie learned this lesson on his swap. Amiright?
yes his "Apollo" LS died on the track because of that, at least I think it was Apollo ( the silver Porsche ) @@Molitoth
Lol 😂
I've been watching & subscribed to Alex for the longest time, b4 he quit his "mortal man" day job, b4 he did RUclips full-time.
Alex, bro, seriously. You are 100% the TRUE definition of INSPIRATIONAL!
He's such an extremely nice guy.
He is such an extremely knowledgeable guy!
2nd to NONE!
It is soo AWESOME to see you channel just constantly GROW!
Keep up the awesome work Alex!
😎👍
Such a satisfying outcome!! Very happy you were able to make this fix AND make it look so simple!!
You're the man Alex! I would think even average mechanics would understand how cars work but that's not reality. Here's to actual mechanics that know cars and aren't just part swappers!
I LOVE your content…but these search and destroy videos are awesome! Love to watch the diagnosis and elimination of issues. So cool!
Covering up the NRG seat mount with a vinyl sticker saying “don’t fucking die” is both the most SEMA and the most ironic thing ever
In 82 I bought a Oldsmobile 455 from a junkyard for $350 because the transmission wouldn’t shift, even a shop told the owner it needed a new transmission. Within 10 minutes I fixed it. The linkage was bent. One of the best cars I ever owned.
is that one of those super plush couch-like cars??

@@fUtube1212 sounds like a blast
I need a guy like this in my life to motivate me on my "first car" and finally get it running and driving. Love his process, and attention to detail.
If you haven't already thought of it, put the fans on an old school turbo timer. That way you can get a few extra minutes of cooling after shutdown without killing the battery.
This
I estimated you paid $25,000 and was very close to actual price you paid.
What did he pay for it?
Ok 10:55 $27.000
I guessed $12k. I think that's all a wholesaler would offer. I haven't finished watching the video yet, so maybe this car is better than I think, but at first glance is looks like a pail.
It's no longer a Porsche without a Porsche engine awesome car through.
I am working on my c200 kompressor! Fixed all the issues and now putting in a smaller pulley and getting a tune!
You can get a front centre rad for theres car if you need it. I think the gt3 had the 3 rads up front and the the others had just 2.
@@LegitStreetCars stock LS ecu, food for thought
For sure, I appreciate that. I'll try the Porsche computer first since it's still there and should be able to control the fans as is. If that doesn't work I'll try the LS ECU. I'm going to revisit that when I start the AC installation.
You are very clever and put regular auto electricians to shame. 🎉🎉🎉
I love the r&d done on all your cars and taking us along for the ride. Easily my favourite RUclips channel. Thank you for all you do buddy 👍
Anyone that spends $10,000 on car rims
A) has too much money
B) needs their head examined
C) both A & B
Just found this great channel and I subscribed 🎉😊
The amount of hackery shown every year at SEMA makes me worry about this one… but if there is anyone who can fix it, it would be Alex
Superb video! You were able to solve the overheating issue when other shops the previous owner went to couldn't! Always a thrill to see what upgrades or fixes you would do next 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You're a great mechanic...idk if its the editing that's making you seem like nothing can frustrate you or you're just cool headed and confident.
What do you think this car is worth fully sorted with working air conditioning and power steering?
It is worth keeping ❤
I guess i dk the worth of cars these days because if someone said 10-15k i would of pulled the $from the bank asap thinkn im getting 50k off the top😂 butt again i dk shitts bout there worth
911’s don’t have power steering, those mega-wide tires are why it’s so heavy steering. That was a sweet 911 when new, it has the tech-lighting package and these cars have aged well.
Not a lot totally ruined a decent car🤣🤣
$28,500 same as BAT brought in.
That fitting is literally a plumbing fitting lmao 14:16
I was totally pulled in by the RUclips algorithm and watched a couple videos very cool content!! Subscribed!! The outtakes at the end are making me laugh because you’re so polished in the video
You never fail to bring amazing content, this is so freaking cool!! And this video is a nice way to begin the weekend, just makes me so happy!
Riight! Oil starvation! That's the word I was looking for! I said oil surging. But yeah - GOTTA fix that!
I think of Hoovie when i hear a ls swapped 911
I’ve got a 996c4. The fans for the front rads are 2 speed and both come on together and ramp up together. Porche turbo has an extra rad and fan in the middle at the front as well.
I am working on my 76' corvette , tuning the quadra jet and messing with muffler/exhaust options. Great video, LSC is my favorite automotive channel now. Videos and content steadily improving and surpassing Hoovie, Vicegrip and others. Nice work on camera and under the hood.!
This thing is going to be amazing after you get some more work done. Looking forward to a proper test-drive.
My ONLY gripe is the flesh colored paint job, but a totally awesome machine in every way. Once you get everything sorted (hopefully for as cheap as possible) you should look into a color change.
The flesh colored interior is HIDEOUS ...
Agreed. IMO it only looks good on the truck it was made for.
@@dwarf365 The wrecking yard pick up truck
100% agree
Le Mans...
I hear ya but it is melted all the way into the wires. What I've learned is the grey ring you still see is a stain and doesn't go away.
Yep, would probably help temperature fluctuating as much.
The most overlooked thing with engine temp is spark plug heat range. But ya hes has some fan issues.
I wish the person who modded the car would comment on here and explain their thought process. It would make for a interesting story.
Alex: 1) proper diagnosis followed by 2) removing unnecessary parts, leading to 3) a no-parts added solution.
nice result and happy to see you tidy up the wiring.
Great knowledge man! Love the troubleshooting process, it’s an art. Who knows, knows.
Alex that is a sick car. The body stance and the wheels have me sold. I love deep dish wheels absolutely my favorite look on vehicles that can get away with it and this one can
Brakes look tiny. Overall, shades of Hoovie.
Cant wait to see this complete! Also the bloopers are such an awesome addition.
Your videos are always enjoyable to watch. You excitement is contagious!
I have never met a mechanic who is more excited about fixing cars than seeing his wife hahahahahaha
Very fun looking at the mech diagnosing and repairing the car!
Another unbelievable fix and video... So good
Great video. Currently working on 90 c4 vett. I'm in over my head
But Keeping at it. Love your car.
Just found your stuff other day and it’s great 👍 well done dude great job
